Payton was born June 20th, 2010; she passed away December 31st, 2018. Payton loved her family and friends with an immense heart. She is survived by her parents Ryan and Tanya, and her siblings Katie, Robert, Ian, Andie and a long list of other family members. Despite all her inabilities, she managed to communicate a love so big you could immerse yourself in it like an ocean. Madelyn Elizabeth Lowman November 1, 1927 ~ January 3, 2019
Madelyn Elizabeth Lowman, a longtime resident of Canon City passed quietly in her sleep, early on the morning of January 3rd. Madelyn was born on November 1, 1927 in Rocky Ford, CO to Foley Bryce Brock and Esther Mary (Funk) Brock. A true Colorado native, she lived her entire life in or near the Arkansas Valley. A graduate of Rocky Ford High School, Madelyn worked first as a copy clerk and part time reporter for Rocky Ford Tribune and Daily Gazette, and then worked as a switch board operator for the Bell telephone system at Rocky Ford. Later, in addition to being a wife and mother, she spent 25 years as a legal secretary for several prominent attorneys in Rocky Ford.

Cedar Rose Woodworks expands to the next generation

Cedar Rose Woodworks recently celebrated its 35th year in business. While Dan Madone continues to offer the same high-quality cabinetry and specialized customer service, his business has expanded to the next generation to be able to offer the latest advances in technology. The family business is owned and operated by Madone, a Cañon City native, with the vital support of his wife, Karen Madone, who takes care of the bookkeeping and office management. Within the last year, the couple’s daughter, Casandra Brady, 29, has joined the ranks. An artist at heart, Brady said she loved helping her dad in his shop when she was a young toddler, staining and sanding cabinet doors and working on other small projects. She said she also enjoyed working on her first hand drawings for the business last year. “It was so much fun,” she said. “I watched my dad do this for years in the office.” After finishing school, Brady moved outside the state with her husband, who was active duty military, before the couple eventually relocated to Colorado. Brady then worked drawing and designing jewelry for a local jeweler, where she also gained a great deal of customer service and sales experience. Her life and experiences brought her back full circle when she officially joined the team fulltime last spring. “When Dad came to me with this proposition, I decided to take that leap of faith, and it felt right,” she said. “It felt like I was back home.”
Now the designer for Cedar Rose Woodworks, Brady said she loves helping others make their house a home. “She’s really taking us to new places,” Madone said. “Along with her doing hand drawings, she is doing computerized drawings so we can offer virtual pictures of what your cabinets will look like.” Cedar Rose Woodworks has the new technology to be able to offer a virtual walk through using special glasses, giving customers a complete look at their proposed project. “It feels like you are walking through the room,” Madone said. Brady said it helps the customer to visualize their space and have confidence in their selection. “That’s what I like,” she said. “With this capability, it allows them to see what it will look like in their space.” Although their pieces are custom, Madone said that doesn’t mean their prices are more than manufactured cabinetry lines. In addition to Madone’s custom line, he offers Bridgewood, Crestwood and J&K. “They are all hardwood cabinetry — inside and out,” he said. “With those four lines, we have the availability to get into any price point.” After 35 years, Madone still enjoys woodworking. Grantham looks to restore public’s confidence as new Fremont County Clerk & Recorder By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record
Justin Grantham’s new job means a move just down the hall from his last position in the County’s Assessor’s Office. Grantham officially took his oath of office Tuesday, making him Fremont County’s newly elected Clerk & Recorder. He ran unopposed in November’s election, replacing former Clerk Katie Barr. Grantham said his first order of business will be to comb through all the office’s policies and procedures. “That way I can find out what happened in the past and stop it from happening again,” he said. The Cañon City Police Department in 2017 launched an investigation into what appeared to be “irregular financial activity” stemming from Barr’s office. She eventually was arrested, and in May she pleaded guilty to issuance of a bad check, a class 3 misdemeanor. County officials immediately reviewed and revised department policies and changed the office’s entire financial process. Barr hadn’t been seen in the office for several months and has never made any public statement regarding the case. In Barr’s absence, Chief Deputy Clerk Dotty Gardunio has been filling in as clerk and recorder. Grantham said Gardunio will remain his chief deputy. “I could not do the work in the office without the existing staff there, and there’s no way I could replace Dotty — she has been a pinnacle of that office for the last year,” he said. Grantham looks forward to a smooth transition, and he will give his staff plenty of time and openness. “If they want to change jobs, they are more than welcome to,” he said. “If they would like to work under me, by all means, let’s get this done, let’s restore the confidence of the citizens in our office.” Moving forward, Grantham most looks forward to serving the citizens. “I’ve always loved doing that, and I’ve always loved helping people,” he said. “Now I get a chance to help everyone in elections, motor vehicle and recording.”

Allen Cooper’s new job required his move a little further than just down the hall Tuesday. The newly-elected sheriff moved across the street from the Cañon City Police Department to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office. Cooper’s first order of business, once he is moved into his new space, is to sit down and meet with his staff both individually and as a group to lay out his expectations in the office, he said. “I think that it’s important
that everybody knows what I am looking for as the sheriff as professionalism and integrity — things that have been important to me throughout my career,” he said. “I want to make sure that we have a vision and that we understand what our mission is and that we understand what our values are.” Immediately after the election, Cooper put together a seven-man transition team comprised of subject matter experts to look
into each division and department within the office to give him feedback on areas that are working well and those that need improvement. He said he has received a great deal of information, and more is being finalized. “My transition team really is going way above and beyond what I expected,” he said. “The results so far have been very positive. That’s something I am excited about.”
Another item on the top of his list is to put a fresh set of eyes on the five homicide investigations that have taken place in Fremont County in the last year. Cooper brought back to the department Commander Jeremy Green, who is an expert in this area. Green and Undersheriff Derek Irvine both are former Fremont County Sheriff’s deputies, as is Cooper. “I hired both of them away to work for the city, and now we’re all going back,” Cooper said. Green has been working for a police department outside the area the last four years, the last two and a half were as a detective. Fremont County Commission Chairman Dwayne McFall on Tuesday thanked former Undersheriff Ty Martin for filling in as sheriff since August, upon former Sheriff Jim Beicker’s resignation. “We appreciate what he did those four months,” McFall said. “He did a good job.” Also sworn in Tuesday, District 2 Commissioner Debbie Bell began her third term; Coroner Randy Keller began his second term; and Assessor Stacey Seifert was sworn in for her fourth term. Treasurer Kathy Elliott was sworn in for her second term Jan. 2. Also during the commission meeting, the board took the following action: — Reorganized the board and appointed McFall as chairman for 2019 and Bell as chair pro tem. — Approved a liquor license renewal for Kwik-e-Mart located at 1503 Elm Ave. There is no estimated time for the opening of this business. — Scheduled the following public hearings for 10 a.m. Jan. 22: Western Oasis Minor Subdivision near the intersection of South Ninth Street and Poplar Ave; a zone change for Western Oasis Resort RV Park from Agricultural Living to Travel Trailer Park & Campground; special review use for Fremont Storage for development of a mini-storage permit near the intersection of South Ninth Street and Popular Avenue. — Approved a zone change from Agricultural Rural Zone District to Industrial Zone District for three parcels located at the intersections of 10th Street and A Street in Penrose.
