ABOUT US

The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District is a special district established in 1965. The District’s main source of funding comes in the form of property tax, which is collected from an area that is approximately 115 square miles in size.

The District is governed by a five member Board, whom are elected at large from citizens living or owning property within the District boundaries. Elections are conducted in May of every even year. The Board conducts monthly meetings at the District’s main office, 575 Ash St., on the second Tuesday of every month beginning at 7:00 pm.

The District currently owns and operates Rouse Park, John Griffin Regional Park, Old Harrison Park, Arkansas Riverwalk, Ropes Challenge Course, R.C. Icabone Swimming Pool, Arkansas Riverwalk Dog Park, Ash Street Community Garden, Schepp Open Space and Eagle Wing Trailhead, and the Community Room, which is located within the main office. The District co-owns and operates Pathfinder Regional Park with Fremont County.

Every year the Board of Directors and the District Staff strive to improve the programs and facilities offered to the community. All the programs and activities listed in this Activity Guide are designed to meet the recreational needs of the public. We of course welcome any suggestions or input as our goal is to better serve the community.

The District works in conjunction with the City of Cañon City, Fremont County, Cañon City RE-1 School District, Florence-Penrose RE-2 School District, Fremont Sanitation District and many local businesses and non-profits to provide services to the citizens of the community.

The District currently employs 12-full time employees and about 150 seasonal and part- time employees.

The District is always seeking and recruiting instructors, who have a skill or interest to share, volunteer coaches and officials. Your suggestions on improving our programs are always welcome. Please call us at 275-1578, visit our office at 575 Ash, or our website at www.ccrec.org.

KID’S FISHING DERBY Bring your kids, your grandkids and your fishing poles to this fun and educational fishing derby at the Pathfinder Park Fishing Pond. All kids, ages 14 and under, will take part in a clinic on fishing safety, fishing techniques, conservation and fishing ethics. Colorado Parks & Wildlife will present this educational clinic, and will provide a limited number of poles. Please bring your own gear if you have it.

CLEAN UP / GREEN UP

The Arkansas River and the Arkansas Riverwalk is generally the focus of the annual Clean Up/Green Up in Cañon City. All across Colorado volunteers will be picking up trash to help clean up and green up the state’s rivers and by-ways.

There will be breakfast offered to all of our volunteers courtesy of the Fremont Community Foundation and Atmos Energy. Everyone is encouraged to attend, especially the Riverwalk users. Plan to join us for breakfast at 8: a.m. and the cleaning begins at 9:00 a.m. Garbage bags will be provided.

Volunteer groups will be assigned to areas on which to focus their clean up efforts. Please bring your own work clothes and gloves.

COMMUNITY GARDEN

The Ash Street Community Garden is ready for another growing season. It is located in the southeast corner of the Arkansas Riverwalk Dog Park. Each year you must reserve your plot and sign a simple agreement with the Recreation District before you may begin planting . This has become a popular Community Garden and space is limited. The plots are available on a first come, first serve basis. There is an annual fee of $15 for the large plots and $10 for the small plots. Water is available at the garden, with the watering schedule posted on the garden gate.

There are a total of 25 plots available this season, and once all of the spaces have been reserved we will start a waiting list, so register soon!

CAÑON CITY CLASSIC PICKLEBALL TOURNAMENT

The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District has partnered with the Cañon City Pickleball Association to bring a Pickleball Tournament to Rouse Park on Saturday, June 15, starting at 9 a.m.

We will offer a Men’s and Women’s Doubles Tournament at the Rouse Park Pickleball Courts. There will be six different divisions, but space is limited to the first 60-teams to register. Awards will be offered for the top three teams in each division.

Kids Klub

KIDS KLUB SUMMER CAMP

Do you want your kids to do something fun this summer? When asked what they did this summer, do you want the answer to be, “We had fun! We made some new friends! We did some new things!” Offering activity choices ensures there will be something for everyone. Kids Klub is a Colorado State licensed childcare program. DHS/ CCCAP payment is accepted. Kids Klub kids will have fun in the sun, with staff committed to their safety and enjoyment. When Kids Klub kids go to the pool, they should take a swimsuit and a towel. Fridays are field trip days, so the half day option is only available Monday through Thursday.

Registration: By Wednesday of the week before attending. All initial registrations must be done online at ccrec.org and follow the link to create an Active Network account. You must download the packet from Active Network and turn it into the Recreation District office. You must also register for your Kids Klub days on Active Network and answer all of the waivers and questions. Through Active Network you will schedule attendance for your child(ren) and pay the fees by credit card online.

KIDS KLUB BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM Do your kids wish there was more to do after school? Do your kids have a place to go before school starts? Are you a working parent/ guardian that worries about what to do on “no school days”? If you are searching for answers to these questions, the KIDS KLUB PROGRAM may be what you and your kids are looking for!

KIDS KLUB has a ton of fun activities going on. Kids are playing basketball, soccer, dodge ball and other active games. They are in groups for arts and crafts or playing board games. Some kids spend time doing their homework. Your child can socialize with others, make new friends, learn a new hobby, or just enjoy the many leisure/recreational activities offered.

All KIDS KLUB sites are state licensed and certified as a day care provider for children. So don’t wait any longer to join our exciting Kids Klub Program that offers challenging and educational activities in a fun and safe environment.

Kids Klub will be open on NO SCHOOL DAYS, CHRISTMAS BREAK, and SPRING BREAK! Kids Klub will be closed on Holidays and Snow Closure Days.

2019 YOUTH TENNIS LESSONS

Each class provides a fun and relaxed atmosphere to introduce the fundamentals: developing ball sense, concentration, attention to detail and good sportsmanship. Classes include instruction, drills, fun games, fitness, agility and team building exercises. For players at every level, there’s a personalized approach to improving power, control, and game play strategy. Every level will work to learn and improve the forehand, backhand, volley, and serve. Instructors will divide the participants into appropriate ages and skill levels the first week of lessons.

CHOOSING A TENNIS RACQUET: The following are standard guidelines for age and racquet length selection: If an 8 year-old is the size of an average 10 year-old, choose the 10-12 racquet. Move up one size (possibly two) to adjust for exceptionally high physical strength or ability, but adjusting down for lack of strength is almost never necessary.

A junior player should use as long a racquet as he/she can comfortably handle. This will encourage development of smooth strokes that utilize good weight transfer and larger muscles. Too small a racquet encourages excessive wrist and elbow action, which, in the long run, will harm both stroke development and the arm. A junior is generally ready for an adult racquet when weighing 85 pounds or more.

This program is for boys and girls wanting to participate in an introductory Youth Volleyball League. The purpose of the Cañon City Area Recreation District Youth Volleyball program is to emphasize skill development, fair play, sportsmanship, and fun. Each participant will play in each game, learning basic volleyball fundamentals and rules.

GYMNASTICS CAMP

The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District, in partnership with the Cañon Academy of Gymnastics, is pleased to offer a gymnastics camp this summer. Kids will learn some of the basics in gymnastics from Coach Nikki Teigen. There will be only one June session this summer. The classes are 90-minutes in length. This is a great way to learn about the sport of gymnastics from a very accomplished coach.

SPORTIES FOR SHORTIES

Sporties for Shorties is designed for kids 3-5 years old. They will learn the basic skills and fundamentals of both team and individual sports with a focus on FUN!! Each class will begin with stretching and warm up exercises and end with a fun interactive activity and a nutritional snack.

Parents are encouraged to show up and interact with their kids. Register early to guarantee a spot in this program.

FOUR MILE GOLF COURSE 2019 JUNIOR GOLF PROGRAM

We have teamed up with the Four Mile Golf Course to offer the Junior Golf program this summer. This program will run on Tuesday, and Thursday mornings for two weeks, offering two separate sessions. The session will be divided into three age groups at three separate times. Each age group will be capped at 10 participants per group. Every group will be taught the fundamentals of golf including: basic grip and setup, short game, irons, driving and round preparation. On course etiquette will also be stressed. It is also important to follow up the lessons with time on the golf course itself for those who wish to play.

YOUTH WRESTLING

The wrestling program is for boys and girls who wish to learn the fundamentals of wrestling. Wrestlers will learn escapes, takedowns, rides, and many more moves. Children will wrestle other children in the same weight bracket. Practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, pick-up a schedule when you register. Practice days are subject to change and there will be no practices over the holiday breaks. Our organization is registered with the Pikes Peak Wrestling League which will give all of our participants the opportunity to participate in youth wrestling tournaments around the state throughout the winter. C a ñ o n City Blitz is a local, competitive soccer club.

Cañon City Blitz has both girls and boys competitive soccer teams determined by birth year age groups. We participate under the rules and regulations of Colorado Soccer Association and US Soccer. We form teams based on having 14 players in a similar age group. Teams play other soccer clubs throughout Colorado. Teams are encouraged to work together to carpool and ensure players can attend practices and games. Our coaches are volunteers but they complete a US Soccer license, background checks, concussion training, and are typically soccer players themselves. Players can be 1019 years old. Girls and boys teams are available.

Nature enthusiasts have encountered numerous species of birds and fowl along the Arkansas Riverwalk. Be sure to keep a look out for wildlife such as bears and mountain lions, they have been known to frequent the areas around the trail as well.

The Tunnel Drive Trailhead is located west of Cañon City off of Highway 50 and overlooks the Arkansas River and railroad tracks as it heads west into the entrance of the Royal Gorge. It is a narrow trail that winds its way through three tunnels of solid granite!

The Arkansas Riverwalk has expanded west from Centennial Park to Tunnel Drive and Pueblo Community College.

Get out and enjoy the Arkansas Riverwalk experience, be courteous to others and take out with you what you took in.

The Mackenzie Trailhead is just west of Mackenzie Avenue and will take you west towards Cañon City and the Recreation District Office.

It’s time to have some fun in the sun! This is a co-ed league with a minimum of three guys and three gals per team. The season is seven weeks and includes a tournament. Games will be self-officiated. The games are played at White Water Bar and Grill at the top of Eight Mile Hill so you know it is about having fun with your family and friends. Nothing can beat a late spring or summer night of volleyball, good food, cold beverages, and great company.

Adult Sports

ADULT CO-ED KICKBALL It’s time to relive the glory days of recess. The season is eight-weeks long followed by a single elimination tournament. Teams will consist of no more than 20 players. This is a recreational league, not a competitive one! We are all about having fun, socializing and enjoying a sunny evening with family, friends, coworkers, and other adults at Rouse Park. Bring the entire family and have a good time, but you must be 18 or older.

Join the fun at Adult Soccer! Teams will have six players on the field at a time and Co-Ed rules apply. Games are played on a smaller field. This is a fast-paced, high scoring game that anyone can play with an emphasis on having fun.

ADULT SPORTS PROCEDURES (AS OF MARCH 2019) Registration: Full payment must be received before the program deadline in order to reserve a spot in a league. Teams will only be taken after the deadline if it aids the program coordinator in scheduling. Example: an odd number of teams to an even number.

League Refunds: If a program does not get at least 4 registered teams the league will not go. Full refunds will be distributed to those teams that have paid. If 4 teams are registered the program will run.

Player Eligibility: Players must sign and complete their team roster before participating in the program. All players must be at least 18 years of age. If you are still in high school and participating in a sports program, please check with your athletic director to make sure there are no potential eligibility issues. Minors are not allowed to participate in Adult Sports.

Adult Sports participants cannot be on two teams within the same league.

Team Rosters: There will be a drop-dead date as to which no more names can be added to a roster. At this point the roster becomes frozen and no players can be added or removed. It will be approximately 60% through the regular season and will be printed on the schedules. Furthermore, all adult team rosters will have a limited number of players per specific sport. All legal players then on the roster will be eligible to participate in the post-season. All team rosters, waivers and drop forms will be kept in the on-site notebook.

Game Challenges: A game may not be challenged after it has been completed. If at anytime during the course of a game a team wants to challenge the opposing teams roster they may do so. Forfeit Penalty: Teams that forfeit without a 24-hour notice to the Program Coordinator will be penalized a fee of $25. The penalty must be submitted to the Recreation District Office or employee before the team is allowed to participate in the next scheduled game. A game forfeited due to a challenge does not constitute a penalty.

Awards: The first-place team will receive T-shirts for every player listed on their roster and a 1st place plaque. The postseason playoffs or tournament will determine the winners in each league. If there is not a playoff or tournament, the league winners will be based on the regular season.

Tie Breakers: Most ties will be decided to determine seeds for post-season play. Tiebreakers will follow the steps listed below when applicable and in order.

Head to Head: record of the teams in question vs each other • Division Record: record vs teams within their division

Legal Players: A player is not legal until they have signed and completed the roster and played in at least one game. A printed name on the roster is not legal until it has been signed, but it does count towards the roster limit.

• Games vs better teams: record vs teams above the teams in question

Adding Players to the Team Roster: If a team has not reached their roster limit before the roster deadline, they can add players by simply having them sign and complete the roster before participating. If a team has reached their limit of players, they cannot add a player until a player has dropped using the drop form.

• Total Scoring Against: total number of points scored against for the entire season will be considered. In case of forfeits, the average points scored from the games played will be figured in.

Removing Players from the Team Roster: Once a player has signed the roster they are a legal player and must sign the drop form in order to not be counted towards a team’s

The Ropes Challenge Course offers a mobile program to those within traveling distance. This program allows for inside or outside programs. Mobile programs are designed to accommodate groups who are seeking team development within their own facility. Our mobile program has the same goal as our low programs with the ability to come meet you where you are!

ARCHERY RANGE

The Archery Range, located at 575 Ash Street just east of the office building, is open to the public at all times during daylight hours. There are targets at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 yards.

The Range Rules are posted below:

1. No Broadheads 2. No Firearms of any type, including BB and pellet guns 3. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult 4. No unsolicited coaching or criticism

CCHS SPEECH AND DEBATE CAMP

If you want to get involved in Speech and Debate we have a great camp to offer you this summer. This three day camp will give you great insight as to what Speech and Debate is all about, and in a very fun setting. Join Tigers Speech and Debate Coach Rob Jackson and his staff for this annual camp in August. At the end of the camp there will be a pizza party and competition in which prizes will be awarded! The Recreation District now offers a free, drop in Ping Pong program on Thursday afternoons in the Community Room. This is for adults and takes place from 2-5 p.m. Simply head over to the District’s Community Room at 575 Ash Street and paddle your way to some fun.

LEARN TO BOWL

If you have ever wanted to learn to bowl and have some fun, now is the time! Bowling etiquette and basics will be taught! Camp will run from June 3-July 12. Youth classes will welcome ages 6-16 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays. Cañon City Lanes will also offer classes to adults on Friday from 1– 3 p.m.

If you’re looking for a great way to get the family together, our FF101 and FF201 series of classes are the perfect way to get started. SWIMMING LESSONS Swimming lessons will be offered throughout the summer in three three-week sessions. Sessions are offered in the mornings and evenings Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Morning lessons are 9-9:30 a.m., 9:45-10:15 a.m., 10:30-11 a.m., and 11:15 a.m.–11:45 a.m.; Levels 4-6 are 45 minutes. The evening lessons are from 5:30–6 p.m. Out-of-District participants will be assessed one out-of-district fee of $15 for all three sessions.

The American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program features six levels of Learn-to-Swim. The objectives for each level are below. Students need to complete one level before moving on to the next.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS INFANT–PARENT / 30 MINUTE CLASS Requires parent accompaniment in the water. Emphasis will be on teaching the parent to position and maneuver the child in the water.

In addition, the parent will learn the routine on basic skills. Swimmers must be worn by all children who are not toilet trained. Swimmers are available at the front desk for $2.

Ages: 6 months -2 years Cost: $40 per three-week session TODDLER /LEVEL I– Introduction to Water Skills / 30 minute class The Toddler/Level I program is structured for children who have completed the infant program and can walk without assistance. AQUA AEROBICS 101

Fit 101 will be offering pool workouts every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. all summer long. Our workouts won’t be your typical aqua aerobics, instead, imagine high intensity interval training but substitute running for swimming. Movements will be performed out of pool with body weight, dumbbells, and kettlebells and then jump in the pool to swim a few laps. Every week’s workout will be different, but each will be challenging and fun! This class is for adults only (18 and older) and all fitness levels are welcome. There is no registration required, but there is a $5 fee per class. Join Tiffany Javernick for a great one-hour exercise session in the Icabone Swimming Pool.

The Cañon City Swim Team is currently seeking anyone, between the ages of 6 and 18, who is interested in joining the Piranhas Swim Team. If you live in Cañon City, Florence, Penrose, Rockvale, or any of the surrounding areas and you LOVE to swim, come join our team.

Team practice begins mid-May when the Icabone Pool opens, and continues through the first week of August. The swim meet competitions begin the last weekend in May and continue throughout the summer. Swim meets are held every weekend with teams located along the Arkansas Valley, including Salida, Pueblo, Pueblo West, Lamar, La Junta, Las Animas, and Rocky Ford, and Alamosa.

The meet in Cañon City is July 12 – 14. Attending meets is not a requirement of the team, however they are always a lot of fun!

Swimming is an excellent and fun way to stay in shape and make life long friends!

Swim Season: Starts mid-May and runs through the first week of August. There is an informational open house on Wednesday, April 17th at the Recreation District Meeting Room from 6:30 -8 p.m. Swim parents are invited to a “Start-of-the-season” meeting on Friday, May 10 from 6- 7 p.m. at the Recreation District meeting Room.

Fees: $200 (includes registrations for regular meets, pool time, expert instruction and Recreation District pool use fee) $35 Insurance (Required and non-refundable) Athlete Requirement: You must be between the ages of 6 and 18 and capable of swimming 25 yards.

Fremont Adventure Recreation’s (F.A.R.) mission is to promote a culture of community and healthy living through outdoor recreation in the Royal Gorge Region. They collaborate with existing runs to coordinate and promote the events, as well as work on their own events to provide a wide variety of outdoor activities.

We’ll spend the morning together and then break into skills-level groups to explore the Trails. This area offers everything from wide dirt roads to challenging singletrack, and we’ll utilize all the terrain we need to help you get comfortable on your bike.

Royal 50 MTB Bike Race Fremont Adventure Recreation is proud and excited to announce the Royal Gorge Region’s first ever mountain bike race-The Royal 50. This epic ride, which will take place on the newest jewel in Cañon City’s crown - the Royal Gorge Park Trails - takes you across singletrack trails that offer flowy fun and technical challenges.

When: Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1 Register: royal50.com Adventure Kids Series Summer is coming, and we’d love for you to join us for our Adventure Kids Series. We’ll meet at four different locations and explore our own backyard. We’ll look for fossils, find new trails, and learn about local geology. There is no age limit, and any child may attend WITH A PARENT / GUARDIAN. A parent or guardian must be present at all times on our guided hikes. How far we get, what we see, where we go all depends on who shows up for each hike.

The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District will offer an Adult Reverse Softball Tournament at the Rouse Park Fields later this summer. Rules are very similar to normal slow-pitch softball, but you run the bases in reverse order. The games are very entertaining as you wait to see who runs the wrong way. We will announce dates, fees and, registration information, in May. All of the information will be available on the website at ccrec.org.

OPEN KAYAK NIGHTS AT THE POOL

Attention all paddlers, or people who want to learn to paddle, the Recreation District is ready to have some fun with kayaks this summer at the pool. Every Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m., Luke Miller will run an Open Kayak Night, for both beginners and experienced paddlers.

The first hour will be working on kayak skills, such as bracing and rolling, while the second hour will be a controlled game of kayak water polo. If you are a beginner, this program is for you, as experienced participants will show you the basics of kayaking in a controlled environment. We will have a limited amount of equipment available for use. If you have your own gear, please bring it. Proceeds support pool operations. Dates: Thursday evenings, May 30-August 29 Times: 7-9 p.m.

2019 ROYAL GORGE WHITEWATER FESTIVAL June 21-22

The 2019 Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival (RGWF) returns to Cañon City on June 21 and 22. The 11th Annual RGWF at Centennial Park (Duck Park) and is loaded with numerous events, a variety of incredible bands, a large beer garden, great food, and a kid’s fun zone.

There is plenty of entertainment in Centennial Park for everyone with beer, food, vendors, bands, and a fun zone. The band line-up will be announced on the website. You don’t want to miss this festival; it’s all about Boats, Bands, and Beer. All of the proceeds will benefit the expansion of the Whitewater Park through WKRP, the Fremont Community Foundation, and The Greater Cañon City Chamber of Commerce Foundation Inc. AFTERMATH

Special Events

HAUNTED HOUSE For the past three years Aftermath has been rated as one of the top haunted houses in the state of Colorado and now is the time you find out why. We use the natural landscape and house to the east of the Recreation District offices and create the ultimate fright, both indoors and out. Come and witness the horror and darkness of Halloween like never before. Inside the house you will lose all sense of direction as you wind your way through the rooms. Every room has a different experience, all to give you a scare you won’t soon forget.

The entrance is located east of the District office under the blue tent, look for the lights. Free parking is available by the Dog Park and at the Arkansas Riverwalk parking lots on both sides of Ash St. All children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult and have parent permission. Remember the event is also outdoors, so dress appropriately. We will see you at Aftermath this October.

ORCHARD OF HOPE FOUNDATION

The Vision of the Orchard of Hope Foundation is a world where cancer patients concentrate on the demanding road to recovery rather than the financial burdens associated with treatment. On July 13 they will host their annual Walk For Hope at Veteran’s Park.

Teams, Businesses, Organizations and Groups team up to raise funds for the Orchard of Hope Foundation. Enjoy an exciting day of fun activities, entertainment, valuable drawings, and shopping of local goods. All monies raised at this event benefit the financial needs of local cancer patients as opposed to other organizations that raise monies for research that are not filtered back to our community.
