Robert William Becker May 2, 1946 - September 26, 2018

Robert William Becker peacefully passed away in Denver, on September 26, 2018, at the age of 72. Robert is survived by his children Bryan Becker of Denver, William Becker of Denver, Aaron Becker of North Richland Hills, Texas, and Lucas Becker of Morrison, Colorado along with his beloved grandchildren Zayne, Sabine, Olivia and Analiese. He is preceded in death by his parents William Claude Becker of Cañon City, Colorado and Margaret Helena Adelina (Stroehlke) Becker of Westcliffe, Colorado and his

siblings Billie-Lou Johnson and Ronald Becker, both of Cañon City, Colorado. Robert was born on May 2, 1946, in Pueblo, Colorado. He graduated from Cañon City High School in 1964. After graduation Robert started a family, devoting himself to being a father, coach, and raising his children, before moving to Denver as a heavy machinery operator at Denver International Airport. A small memorial was held in Denver with close friends and family to celebrate Robert's life.

Charles Vincent Wolfers 1923 - 2018

Charlie Wolfers, 95, passed away October 12, 2018 surrounded by family in his home in Canon City. Born August 1, 1923 in Maryville, MO, he was the son of Fred Robert and Mabelle Marie Burch Wolfers. He retired to Canon City with his wife Earlene Fulkerson Wolfers in 1987 after a 38-year career in the aerospace business with McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing). Charlie spent three years in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a Communications Officer (1943 - 1946). After completing his BSEE (Electrical Engineering degree) at the University of Missouri, he was employed by McDonnell Aircraft Company in 1949 in St. Louis, MO, married Earlene Fulkerson that same year, and raised his family there. He spent the first 10 years designing fighter jets, and in 1959 was selected as one of the early design engineers for project Mercury, our country's first manned spacecraft. The remainder of his total 38-year career was spent in the aerospace division culminating in a 13-year stint in Houston, TX in support of NASA related contracts awarded to McDonnell Douglas. After retirement in 1987, he and Earlene moved to Canon City, CO where he was an

active member in various non-profit organizations including: Friendly Visitors, Habitat for Humanity, AAUW, The University Club, The Fremont/Custer Community Historical Society, Senior Mini College, and the Fremont Community Concert Society. He served on the boards and held other responsible positions in those organizations. Charlie was preceded in his death by his parents, Fred and Mabelle Wolfers and his wife Earlene Wolfers. He is survived by his son, Dehl Wolfers and his wife Lucinda of Parker, CO; his daughter, Nannette Tornblom and her husband Allan of O'Fallon, MO; grandson, Neil Tornblom of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter, Ashley Ostermeyer and her husband David of Wright City, MO; and three great-grandchildren, Tess, Andi, and Finn Ostermeyer. A private celebration of life will be held on a future date. Andy Neinas, owner of several Royal Gorge Region businesses — 8 Mile Bar and Grill, Echo Canyon River Expeditions and Royal Gorge Cabins — donated to the campaign in support of 2A this year. “I don’t think our community took the time to fully understand the low, low risk and high reward associated with the issue,” Neinas said.

Cañon City Elks to host Holiday Craft Extravaganza Nov. 16-17 The community is invited to get a jump start on holiday gift shopping during the Holiday Craft Extravaganza, hosted by the Cañon City Elks. The event will be from 5-8 p.m. Nov. 16 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Elks Lodge, located at 404 Macon Ave. Event organizer Renee McGee there will be 20 vendors, along with hors d’oeuvres and libations. “It’s going to be very cozy,” McGee said. “The entire Elks Lodge will be decorated for Christmas.” There will be many items for sale, including quilted gifts, doll clothes, cloth dolls and teddy bears, purses, jewelry, lotions, honey, stained glass and birdhouses.

Cotopaxi resident Gary Sagan will offer hand-crafted planters, birdhouses and bird feeders, and he will take orders for custom items. Also at the craft fair will be Bullfrogs & Butterﬂies, a wood art business owned by Rick and Kathy Fortner. The couple’s pieces are hand-crafted here in Colorado using found branches and barnwood where possible and include unique designs that reﬂect this beautiful state and sometimes a wacky outlook. “We craft a variety of pieces, including handcarved aspen, pinon and cedar, wood burned plaques and hand colored or painted items,” Kathy Fortner said.

Fremont County Commissioner Debbie Bell: Vote ‘yes’ to reclaim local control

Today’s technology is amazing. We can go online to pay bills, apply for jobs, shop, read the news, find our forecast, take college and other courses, post in social media and so much more. Yes, technology is amazing ... when it works. Most of us in Fremont County remember a couple of years ago when a major fiber optic line was cut, leaving us all in the dark ages — without the Internet. Retailers were stifled, entrepreneurs shut down, individuals left scratching our heads trying to figure out how to find the information we were seeking. That fiasco happened because there is no redundancy built into the system for Fremont County. Can it happen again? You bet. But your vote this November will provide the possibility of changing that, by supporting ballot issues put forth by

Fremont County and the Cities of Cañon City and Florence. Ballot issues 1A, 2B and 2C will return local control to our local governments by opting out of Senate Bill 05-152, a state legislative measure that took away our collective right to engage with public or private sector partners to provide availability of these essential systems to our residents. These issues expressly do not allow increases in taxes nor the expenditure of any taxpayer funds. This overall issue was identiﬁed a few years back by Fremont Connect, a group of local technology experts and others interested in keeping our rural area up with advancements made in today’s technology. We quickly realized the lack of redundancy must be rectiﬁed, but our hands were tied by SB 05-152. We couldn’t even accept grants to help move

into the future. Earlier this year, Fremont Economic Development Corp. felt compelled to bring this discussion front and center, to help businesses and citizens alike. FEDC Executive Director Rob Brown presented information to both city councils, as well as the commissioners, asking us to refer measures to the ballot to allow citizens to decide the question. We collectively saw the need and, indeed, moved forward with these issues. Since local control was taken away by the state legislature in 2005, at least 28 Colorado counties and more than 70 municipalities throughout the state already have approved similar ballot questions. Passage of these three ballot measures means the county and cities again have the right to establish business partnerships to increase access to high-speed broadband

Internet. Please understand this will not prevent any private businesses, including existing broadband providers, from initiating or continuing these services. Passage of this measure means local governments can make efforts to improve coverage and availability, access grant funding to offset and defray the cost for delivery of such services, and make assets available to serve the broadband needs of residents, businesses and students alike. As elected ofﬁcials, we all work very hard to do the right thing for the citizens of our cities and counties. A “yes” vote will allow us to engage in technological activities that will beneﬁt us all. Toy Bowl XVIII set Construction creates a new way to get to school for Nov. 3 at CCHS By Chris Graham The Daily Record

The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District will host Toy Bowl XVIII on Nov. 3 at Cañon City High School’s Citizens’ Stadium to wrap up the 2018 Gary “Bubba” DiOrio Youth Football Leagues. The teams competing are in the Credit Union of Colorado 5th/6th Grade Tackle League. All four of the teams will participate in one of two games, with the first starting at 5 pm and the finale kicking off at 7 pm. All teams are seeded and will compete for first and third in their respective games. The Cañon City Tiger Pride Booster Club will provide the concessions for this event. They will have the usual concessions items for sale and a special meal deal. For $5 you will receive an entrée (brats, hot

dogs, or hamburgers while supplies last, with chips, a cookie, and a drink. They will also serve hot chocolate and coffee in case you need to warm up. The goal of the Toy Bowl is not to just celebrate youth sports, but to give back to the community. The cost to enter the Toy Bowl is a non-perishable food item, a toy for a child between the ages of 3 and 12, or $1. If you choose to donate more you are welcome to do so. All of the proceeds will go to families in need this Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is a way for these four teams, as well as their families and friends, or anyone in our community to give back to those in need. The Canon City Fire District serves approximately 35,000 citizens within 122 square miles around the Canon City Area. They offer All Hazards Response including Structure Fire, Wildland Fire, EMS, Rope & Water Rescue, Auto extrication, and HAZMAT incidents. The Fire District is primarily funded by property taxes. The Gallagher Amendment has caused the residential assessment rate to be reduced, lowering the Fire Districts revenue. This reduction has been completely out of the Districts control. In 1982 the residential assessment rate was calculated at 21%, today it is at 7.2% and it is projected to drop to 6.1% in 2019. This reduction in residential property tax assessment rates has created a budget shortfall for the Fire District. The only way to fix this is with an increase in the mill levy rate. The only way to increase the mill levy rate and restore the districts revenue is by a vote of the public, per the Tabor Amendment.
