In Loving Memory Leon Mehle
Gene Heckard
We are saddened to announce the sudden passing of our dad, Leon Mehle as well as his beloved border collie, Coldwater. Dad was born in Pueblo, CO to Joseph and Mary (Gregorich) Mehle on January 5, 1945. He is preceded in death by his parents and his infant son Joey Mehle. He is survived by his children, Greg Mehle and Lisa (Greg) Glab; and his grandson’s, Dustin Hankins, Joe and Nathan Glab. Leon, Lon or commonly known by his road handle aka “FOOTLOOSE” was truly a modern-day renaissance man. With his constant companion and best pal, Coldwater by his side they were seldom home, always on the road seeking nature’s path as well as any “good finds” along the way. Dad’s passions are an encyclopedia of their own, entirely too numerous to list in a single breath or common sentence. But to name just a few...an accomplished photographer with the love of art captured on film from a high school hobbyist to a remarkable digital master in his 70’s. A true marksman with all types of firearms, from black powder to rare foreign calibers. But the simple rugger mark 2 being on the top of his favorites. A story teller, poet, humorist, rock hound, fisherman and educator the list goes on. He will truly be missed by those who knew and loved him and the earth will have a task in finding replacements for the two of them. A memorial celebration will be held in his honor on Sunday, April 22nd at 3p.m. at the Gooseberry Patch restaurant in Penrose, CO. Gene Heckard was born November 16, 1921 in Fowler Colorado, to Goldie Mahayla and Ira S. Heckard. He was 96 years young. Gene cooked in the conservation camps, and in World War II. He “served his time” working and retiring from the Department of Corrections. He was a member of all branches of the Odd Fellows for over 36 years. Gene and Barbara enjoyed square dancing with the Royal Gorge Promenaders. Gene married Barbara Abbott on June 1st, 1947. They were blessed with 3 children; Larry(April) Heckard, Donald Heckard, Sharon(Ken) Leonard; six grandchildren, Michelle Carstens, Melissa(Matt) Waggener, Timothy Heckard, William(Brandy) Heckard, April(Howard) Houghton; eight great-grandchildren, Mahayla Waggener, Aiden Heckard, Kyler Heckard, Lexi Reed, Chris(Vickie) Houghton, Howard(Brianna) Houghton, Riley Houghton, Curtis Houghton, and three great-great-grandchildren, Nickie, Christian, and Alex. Gene was preceded in death by both parents; two brothers; sons; son-n-law, David Carstens; grandson, Timothy Heckard; and one great-grandson, Curtis Houghton. He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Canon City and enjoyed attending the Cowboy Church. Natalie Camerlo Natalie Mayfield Camerlo, 79, born December 1, 1938, in Wichita Falls, Texas, passed away April 16, 2018, in Canon City. She was preceded in death by her mother, Patty Mitchell McCarty and father, Herbert Darwin Mayfield. Natalie is survived by her brother, Joseph Mayfield; daughter, Patricia (Joe) Nicolini; sons, James (Kim) Camerlo, Thomas Camerlo; grandchildren, Lexi, Ally, Nick, Tony, Joshua, Jacob and Jared. Natalie’s life reflected her love for Jesus, her Lord and Savior, along with her kindness to others. For 20 years, Natalie lived at Camerlo Dairy in Florence, Colorado, with her husband, James “Tom” Camerlo. After their divorce in 1979, she moved to Colorado Springs, where she became involved with two of her passions, Women’s competitive shooting and becoming an Emergency Medical Technician. She also worked as an employment counselor. Her greatest love, however, was for her family. She enjoyed their large family dinners together, along with watching the Broncos play. Her faith helped Natalie to cope with an auto-immune disease, Guillain-Barre, which she endured for 28 years. Celebration of Life, 1 p.m. Friday, April 27, Living Stone Calvary Chapel, in Canon City. Briefs Bell Tower to host ‘Back Roads of Colorado’ The Bell Tower Cultural Center announces their new show, “Back Roads of Colorado.” The mixed media 2D - 3D show will be May 18 through June 26, with the reception from 5 to 7 p.m. May 18. The theme for the show originates from the influence of the vast expanse of beauty from Colorado. The only criterion is Colorado and the way not often traveled. The show will be judged by Dale Boody, a Cañon City resident and owner of Dale Boody Designs. Boody is educated in design and influence of application. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this art show. He is a cyclist who travels many Colorado back roads. The show will award cash prizes for the top four artists. Library to host movie nights The Cañon City Public Library, 516 Macon Ave., is honored to be hosting the Cañon City High School student’s movie nights and discussion events! There are five different movies and dates in April and May. With the library’s movie license, there is limited information it can give about the movies outside of the library (competition and royalties). The students have picked the movies and will have concessions available for a fee, money collected will be donated to a charity. The students are encouraging the public to join in on the event and contribute to the discussion after the viewing. Movie ratings are R and PG. Showings will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and April 26, May 10, May 15 and May 17. All showings are at the library, 516 Macon Ave., after regular hours.
Bank of the San Juans to present runBlossom
Bank of the San Juans presents runBlossom, which includes a fun 5K or a challenging 1/2 Marathon, as well as a Kids’ Fun Run & Toddler Trot. Now in its 14th year, the race takes place along the Arkansas Riverwalk in historic Cañon City, in conjunction with the city’s annual Music & Blossom Festival. The event is organized by Fremont Adventure Recreation, with support from the Blossom Festival. A portion of the proceeds will benefit outdoor recreation in Fremont County. participation in the event features a T-shirt, raffle, food and drinks, kids’ activities and awards. A $75 cash prize for the top male/female in each race; $50 for second place; 3rd place wins a complimentary registration for 2019. An additional $50 cash prize will be awarded to the runner(s) that set a new course record in each race. Custom awards will be given to the top three individuals in each age group for both male & female for each race. Ditch/culvert maintenance responsibility
Irrigation season begins soon and water will be flowing in the ditches and laterals again. The Oil Creek Ditch and South Cañon Ditch are already on and the Hydraulic Ditch should be on within a week or two. Regardless of whether residents own water rights or use the irrigation water, it is the responsibility of the property owners/tenants to keep the ditches adjacent to the property free of debris which may cause obstructions to the free flow of water (City of Cañon City Municipal Code 12.16.020). Remember also that irrigation ditches and laterals are not to be used for dumping of trash, pet/animal waste, vegetative matter or any other substance. The water that flows in the ditches is used for irrigating crops, yards and gardens. The water eventually makes its way back to the Arkansas River and anything dumped into the ditch has the potential to be carried to the river. Trash and debris may also plug trash racks along the ditches, which may lead to the ditch overflowing during heavy storm events. Residents can help keep trash and debris out of the ditches by not throwing anything into them, not littering city streets and by making sure the lids to garbage dumpsters are kept securely closed to prevent blowing trash from entering the ditches.
Cañon Proud Clean-Up Trash Vouchers
The City of Cañon City is now out of trash vouchers and will not have any more. However, the 2018 Cañon Proud Clean-Up is still on-going. Partners in this event include Twin Enviro Services, R.D. Recycling, Junk Masters, and Call it Gone Metal Recyclers. Famed photographer John Fielder visits Royal Gorge

Cañon City area photographers had an opportunity to learn from a seasoned professional Saturday and Sunday as renowned photographer John Fielder visited the area. In an event organized by and for the benefit of Fremont Adventure Recreation, Fielder conducted a classroom session, two outdoor workshops and a dinner and slide show. On Saturday, 60 individuals learned tips, tricks, and post-production techniques from Fielder, who has been capturing iconic images of Colorado for more than 40 years. His expertise ranges from composition to digital post-production, and he gave detailed instruction to the crowd. He later took a group of 20 participants on a hike through the Royal Gorge Park Trails, Cañon City’s newest developing trail system, to put their new skills into practice. Fielder and his assistant, Alena, offered personal creative and technical assistance to participants. In attendance was local resident John Kearney, who took a class with Fielder a few months ago and helped bring Fielder to the area. “When I told him about FAR activity in Fremont County,” said Kearney, “he was interested to hear about that. Since (he) has so much experience in hiking, backpacking, and wilderness skiing, he has a big interest in conservation and recreation.” More than 130 people then attended a dinner, hosted by the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park and featuring Winery at Holy Cross Abbey wines, a sunset walk across the bridge, and a slide show of Fielder’s personal and landscape photos. Fielder donated both his time and the proceeds of the dinner and slide show session and also donated 30 percent of all merchandise sales to FAR. As an active environmentalist, Fielder also noted the need for outdoor
