Kathryn Diane Carhartt (Davis) March 29, 1957 - December 24, 2017

Diane was born March 29, 1957 to Rose Mary and Wesley Carhartt in Colorado. She died from cancer Christmas Eve 2017 in Florida. After graduating from High School she met her love Chris Davis who shared her love for travel.They moved to Cairo Egypt for several years. Which enabled them to visit the pyramids, go on safari in Kenya, see the wailing wall in Jerusalem, scuba dive in the Red Sea. Their next move was to Malaysia when they spent time in Thailand and Singapore. Returning to the US they moved to Tampa and their beautiful daughter Laura was born. The next move to Indonesia included a suitcase full of text books for Laura. Based in Jakarta they visited many of the islands and ruins. Bali became

Diane's favorite as was a tree top lodge they stayed in above the Amazon in Brazil. Returning to Florida they bought a house in Englewood Florida and her talents of landscaping flourished. Her deep love of animals and birds, creating stain glass, reading historical novels and spending hours managing the family's photo history was admired. My personal favorite memory was she and Chris living on their sailboat moored near Sausalito with her giant parrot. Diane was a beautiful strong woman and missed by many including her daughter Laura and sisters Elaine, Carol, Jane and many relatives and friends. In her memory get a passport and get on an airplane or visit a dog park.

Brian Patrick Sasser

September 4, 1978 ~ December 18, 2018 On Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018 at age 40, Brian Patrick Sasser left our hearts and lives unexpectedly from natural causes. He was a great son, father, step father, fiancé, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend to all the lives he touched. Brian was welcomed into the world September 4, 1978 to Merrilee (Colbert) and Gary Sasser. He grew up in Fremont County where he attended Canon City schools and graduated from CCHS in 1997. He continued his education and received his Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed all that Colorado had to offer. He was a devoted family man that will be greatly missed. He is survived by his daughter, Alina Sasser age 11; his fiancée, Chelsea Martinez;

mother, Merrilee (Colbert) Sasser, father, Gary (Elizabeth) Sasser. Brian is also survived by step children, Landyn age 9, Mario Jr. age 5, Miniziah Martinez age 3; grandparents, Jack and Roma Jean Sasser; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many many friends. There will be a private family memorial at Greydene Independent Baptist Church. His Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Florence Elks Lodge, 131 Front Street, Florence, Colorado. Robert Lee Smith

June 4, 1953 ~ December 19, 2018 Robert Lee Smith passed into the loving arms of Jesus on December 19th after a three year battle with emphysema. He was born to Millard L. (Scotty) and Vera E. (Martella) Smith who preceded him. Bob was a heavy equipment operator his entire working life, retiring from Harsco Corporation when his health began to decline. His reputation as a tremendously skilled and hard working man preceded him and where ever he worked, those skills were highly sought after.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lillian Shook. He is survived by his son, Bobby; step daughter, Lena; brother and best friend, Jim (Linda) Smith of Canon City; niece, Tammy (Tag) Allen, nephews, Anthony (Betty) Shook and Scott (Alicia) Smith. John "Alex" Severance-Medaris

September 8, 1994-December 16, 2018

John "Alex" Alexander SeveranceMedaris passed away on December 16, 2018, in Greeley, Colorado. Born on September 8th, 1994, in Cañon City to George Medaris and Kathleen Severance who survive. He was preceded in death by grandparents Charles and Lenore Severance and Forrest and Avis Medaris; Uncles Roger Severance, Michael Medaris, and Richard Munford; Aunt Loretta Medaris McCoin; and cousin Gary Rader. John grew up in Cañon City, graduating from CCHS in 2013. He attended the University of Northern Colorado, one semester shy of earning his Bachelor of Arts in sociology. John worked for many years with the Cañon City Recreation District, beginning at the swimming pool and later at the Kids Club in the summer and before and after school. He was currently employed fulltime at the ABC Child Development Center in Greeley while also attending UNC fulltime. He was known and loved by so many children who gravitated to him because of his comforting nature, warm smile and his ability to connect with any child. Every place he went, he would be greeted by a child who once was in his care and they would hug with big smiles on their faces. He truly loved his "kids" as they did him. John loved spending time in the mountains, especially at Rainbow

Lake. He loved sitting around camp fires with his family and friends. He also loved his dogs Buddie, Colt, and Roxie and his cat Isis. John would spend hours driving around and loved the sound of his turbo mufflers and all his added accessories. John is survived by his parents and his brother Charlie of Denver, Colorado; Aunts and Uncles Marilyn and Bob Myers, Laurina Cullip, Marcia Munford, Mike and Maggie Munford; and many cousins. He was dearly loved by family and the many friends he made along his journey. He was taken at a time when he was evolving into the man he was meant to be. His bright light, wry humor and infectious smile may no longer be visibly present but will always remain with those he met in his brief but productive life. Death will not extinguish his light; the warmth, the glow will be within us always. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the Second Wind Foundation and local Mental Health organizations. Viewing, 10:00-12:00 at the Stoddard Funeral Home, Greeley, followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:00. A memorial will be held in Canon City, Colorado, in January. Donald Emory Turner May 8, 1926 - December 5, 2018

Donald Emory Turner, 92, went to his heavenly home in the company of his family on Tuesday, December 5, 2018. Don grew up in Bradford, Illinois where he attended the local schools. He joined the Naval Air on July 7, 1944 at the age of 18. He was a navigator/gunner in a TBM Avenger during World War II. He was shot down twice, and both times his battle ship, the Ticondoroga, picked him up along the Japan shoreline. He was honorably discharged in June of 1946. Don returned home to Bradford, IL and began work at his uncle's Standard Gas station. He met his true love in 1947, married, and enjoyed 71 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Juanita (Nita). They had four children together: Conni, Craig, Cal, and Cindy. In 1952, Don purchased his own gas station in Bradford, Skelly Oil. He later purchased a bulk plant, car wash, and an ice cream shop (which they named) the Big Dipper. In 1957, he purchased school buses and owned and contracted them until he retired in 1993. After twenty years of owning the Skelly Oil Station, he sold it and began selling Chevrolet automobiles. After the owner retired and closed his business, Don began driving a Senior Citizen's van. He drove the van from 1977-1993. This was his last job before he moved out west to Colorado with his wife, Nita. Upon arriving in Canon City, CO in 1993, Don

and Nita quickly began to know the townspeople by volunteering at the Welcome Center through the Chamber of Commerce. They both also worked at the Royal Gorge Bridge where they made many friends. Don later worked for Buffalo Joe Rafting Company as the bus driver. He enjoyed interacting with the rafters and meeting people from all over the world. In July, 2016, Don and Nita moved to Loveland, CO. They enjoyed two and a half years together meeting the friendly people of Loveland and enjoying their new surroundings. Don was always very active in community work and is a 73-year member of the American Legion. He served as Commander of the post, county, and Sr. Vice Commander of the department. Don has always been known for his happy and friendly demeanor, loving people, and for always having a song in his heart. Don is survived by his wife Juanita (Nita); children Conni Hofmann (Dale) of Peoria, IL, Craig Turner (Arlene) of Stockton, CA, Cal Turner (Mindy) of Colorado Springs, CO and Cindy Wederquist (John) of Evans, CO; as well as 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Inurnment with Military Honors were held at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 with memorial services at Viegut Funeral Home in Loveland following inurnment.

Looking back at 2018

Heavy rainstorms caused significant damage to area By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

Torrential rain, serious flooding and detrimental hail caused significant damage to many properties across the community July 23-24. On the western end of the county, Hayden Pass and County Road 40 took a devastating hit from the July 24 storm. Private roads, driveways and bridges were heavily damaged in that area, and two cabins or secondary-homes were completely destroyed from water and debris. Sheds and camp trailers also were swept away and destroyed. Trees were carried downstream with other debris to the Harry Walker Dam off of CR 39, where water traveled swiftly in and along the roadway and finally across U.S. 50 and into the Arkansas River. Fremont County officials estimate the total cost of road repairs to be more than $1.3 million, not including damage and loss to private properties. No lives were lost and there were no injuries from the flood that wreaked havoc in Coaldale, but a helicopter was called in to rescue a stranded family. During a tour of the area in August, Comissioner Dwayne McFall said it’s hard to believe that a “peaceful little creek” can be so devastating with the force that it had behind it to take out walls of homes. “My heart goes to these homeowners,” McFall said. “It’s devastating. Mother Nature can be a beast.” The evening before chaos struck Coaldale, Cañon City resident Sharen Swagerty, 65, found herself stuck in her car during a swift-moving flash flood and hail storm in the Dawson Ranch area. She had not yet eaten dinner, her blood sugar was plummeting and the water outside her stalled car was rising. “I hadn’t had my supper yet, and my blood sugar started crashing,” she said. “The water was way higher than I realized, and I was stuck.” Mike Calhoun, a Good Samaritan going around helping stalled motorists near the Wolf Park subdivision, noticed Swagerty in her car. She said he approached her, telling her not to open the car door but to crawl out of the window. “I don’t know how he had the strength

Underneath the fast-moving water was muck and rocks, making it easy for someone to lose footing. In Florence, a dumpster was slammed against the home of Steven Tallent, causing damage to his roofline and windows. Large pieces of hail were mixed in with mud and mire piling as high as six feet in some areas. Other residents who live along Colo. 115, east of Chandler Creek in Florence had significant damage to their properties, including the destruction of yards, vineyards and a pasture. Year in review for nonprofit JJ’s Helping Paws JJ’s Helping Paws, a nonprofit organization whose core passion is to improve the lives of homeless and pet-owned cats and dogs through education and specialized spay and neuter programs, was voted the No. 1 Non-Profit in Fremont County. Because of the organization’s volunteers this year: — 970 spay/neuter surgeries were completed this year with JJ’s specialized spay/ neuter programs. — 465 low cost spay/neuter surgeries were performed for pet-owned cats and

dogs. — 412 cats and kittens were surrendered to JJ’s. Many of them enter the foster program before going to rescue partners. JJ’s is able to provide much needed and often life-saving veterinarian care for these cats and kittens before being transported to rescue partners. Many of the kittens surrendered to JJ’s are feral kittens, and JJ’s volunteers spend much time socializing them. — 450 feral cats were trapped, neutered

and returned to their feral communities. — 1,850 vaccinations were provided. — 600 feral/community cats received assistance from the feral food bank on a daily basis. Additionally, JJ’s volunteers have made feral shelters out of plastic containers with insulation. Volunteers then go and check and add dry straw in the cold weather. JJ’s volunteers have rushed sick kittens and cats that were surrendered to JJ’s to seek emergency veterinarian care when sick

numerous times. JJ’s volunteers are continuously organizing cat food drives as there is such a huge demand. They also have monthly low-cost spay/neuter voucher sales for pet-owned cats and dogs, and because JJ’s is foster based, its foster families are always at full capacity. Once the focal point of meetings with governors, financial managers, politicians and business leaders, the Peabody Mansion continues to be a hub of activity in downtown Cañon City. Built in the 1880s for James Clelland, the Victorian house set on a quiet, residential, tree-lined lane known as River Street, now Royal Gorge Boulevard. In 1875, James H. Peabody moved to Cañon City and married Clelland’s daughter. They were given the Peabody Mansion as a wedding present. Peabody was elected to a two-year term as governor while Frances Lillian Clelland Peabody took over the duties First Lady of Colorado. When Peabody died at age 65 in 1917, Mrs. Peabody sold the home, which served many different purposes until purchased by Darryl Biggerstaff in 1988. Biggerstaff later sold it to Cañon City as part of a downtown revitalization and urban renewal effort, known as the River Station Project. The Cañon City Chamber of Commerce took over its operation and purchased the building from Cañon City. As part of its use, the chamber has become a focal point for tourists coming into town, as well as businesses joining the organization. The Chamber now sees an opportunity to grow and relocate to another property. The Chamber’s board of directors will review offers on this wonderful and historic property.
