Dear Citizens of the Cañon City Area Recreation & Park District, Since 1965 the Recreation District has proudly served the recreation needs of the community. It began when the R.C. Icabone Swimming Pool opened in the summer of 1966. Later that year the first Board of Directors began looking at options to expand the District with a park, programs for football, baseball, and basketball, and to try to get a recreation center with a sheet of ice. Some of this happened, some did not.

The fact is the community had needs for parks and programs and the District did what it could to meet those needs. It was all about moving the community forward.

Over the next 57 years the District would keep moving forward. Additions such as Rouse Park, the Arkansas Riverwalk, John Griffin Regional Park, Harrison Park, Pathfinder Park, and the Schepp Open Space would occur. We went from just a pool to more than 300 acres of property for the public to enjoy using for recreation. We expanded from three programs in the first few years to nearly 50 in 2023. All of this happened without an increase in the mill levy. Rather, it was made possible thanks to aggressively pursuing grants and the District receiving generous donations and sponsorships.The District kept moving forward and tried to keep up with the evolving recreational demands of the community, while the mill levy remained the same.

The District has been fiscally conservative through the years to keep operations running, but that has been tested not just by the expanding needs of the community, but also by the Icabone Pool. For decades this facility has been in need of replacement and commercial pools are very expensive to build and operate.

The original life expectancy was 25-to-30 years and after 57-years of service it had to be closed in May of 2023 due to mechanical and safety issues. According to multiple pool engineers it had simply reached the end of its useful life. There is no existing funding mechanism to replace this facility.

Financially the District is underfunded. When compared to other recreation districts in the state we are woefully underfunded. Based on population the Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District is funded annually at $33.63 per person. Now compare that with Montrose at $70.13 per person, Bennett at $75.90 per person, South Park (Fairplay) at $81.96 per person, and Strasburg at $85.31 per person. Those are just a few examples of the 22 higher funded recreation districts. Per capita we are the second lowest funded recreation district in the state, ahead of only Penrose. We have never had a mill levy increase. The same cannot be said for the other districts on this list. We are not in a position to expand any further due to our financial constraints.

The question now is what do we do about a swimming pool? The District and Board of Directors are currently working on a feasibility study to replace the Icabone Swimming Pool. This study will provide us with information on what the community wants in an aquatic facility, how much it would cost to construct and operate, and what the tax implications would be. Basically, the District is listening to what the community wants and needs in the facility. Commercial swimming pools are more expensive than ever to build. When comparing our facility to other current projects around the state, a good estimate to replace the pool is between $10-$11 million. This number could increase, but it won’t decrease. This is why a feasibility study is needed, so the public has all of the facts.

Funding for commercial swimming pools is not easy to come by. As explained earlier, there is no existing funding stream to replace the pool and grants are very difficult to find. In a perfect scenario we might be able to obtain grant funding for nearly 10% of the project, but that will be a challenge. Any grant funding will require significant matching funds, which we don’t have. The truth is public commercial pools are historically funded through tax dollars. It is up to the citizens to decide whether or not we want to invest our tax dollars in a swimming pool, and the earliest we can go to the ballot is November of 2024.

The Recreation District has proudly served the community for 58 years and we will continue to do so for years to come. The question now is do we want part of that service to include a pool? It will be for you to decide.

ABOUT US

The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District is a special district that was established in 1965. The District’s main source of funding comes in the form of property tax, which is collected from an area that is approximately 115 square miles in size.

The District is governed by a five-member Board, who are elected at large from citizens living or owning property within the District boundaries. Elections are conducted in May of every even year. The Board conducts monthly meetings at the District’s main office, 575 Ash, St., on the second Tuesday of every month beginning at 7:00 pm.

The District currently owns and operates Rouse Park, John Griffin Regional Park, Old Harrison Park, Arkansas Riverwalk, Arkansas Riverwalk Dog Park, Ash Street Community Garden, Ash Street Archery Range, Schepp Open Space and Eagle Wing Trailhead, and the Community Room, which is located within the main office. The District co-owns and operates Pathfinder Regional Park with Fremont County. The District closed the 57-year-old R.C. Icabone Swimming Pool in May of 2023 due to numerous maintenance and safety issues. An independent study stated the structure had outlived its useful life. It exceeded its expected life by nearly 30 years.

Every year the Board of Directors and the District Staff strive to improve the programs and facilities offered to the community. All the programs and activities listed in this Activity Guide are designed to meet the recreational needs of the public. We of course welcome any suggestions or input as our goal is to better serve the community.

The District works in conjunction with the City of Cañon City, Fremont County, Cañon City RE-1 School District, Florence-Penrose RE-2 School District, Fremont Sanitation District and many local businesses and non-profits to provide services to the citizens of the community.

The District currently employs 12-full time employees and about 110 seasonal and part time employees.

The District is always seeking and recruiting volunteer coaches, officials, supervisors, and instructors, who have a skill or interest to share. Again your suggestions on improving our programs or adding a program are always welcome. Before and After School Program

All Kids Klub sites are state licensed and certified as childcare providers.

The Recreation District offers an outstanding childcare program from the convenience of your child’s school known as Kids Klub. This program has been around for more than 30 years and provides a safe and secure environment for your children.

Kids Klub offers homework help, sports, free play, arts and crafts, board games, etc. Your child can socialize with others, make new friends, learn a new hobby or just enjoy the many recreational activities in a safe and secure environment.

Registration: Online only, Registration Packet available at the Rec District office and online.

Completed packets can be turned in at the office and immunization records are required. No application fees.

The basketball program is geared toward teaching the fundamentals of the game, sportsmanship, teamwork, and having fun. Games will be played at Harrison School and Cañon City Middle School. The season will be seven or eight weeks depending on the division.

Youth Indoor Futsal Soccer This program is for boys and girls wanting to participate in the fast-paced game of Futsal. The purpose of the futsal program is to emphasize skill development, fair play, sportsmanship, and fun. This is a game that will improve your passing and footwork skills. All games are 5-on-5 and there are goalies. The Futsal ball is a weighted soccer ball which creates a greater emphasis on ball control and passing.

The wrestling program is for boys and girls 5 through 13 years old who wish to learn the fundamentals of wrestling. Wrestlers will learn escapes, takedowns, rides, and many more moves. Children will wrestle other children in the same weight bracket. Practice days are subject to change.

Participation in the tournaments is not mandatory, it is an option for any child in our program.

Come Play Soccer with Cañon City BLITZ!

The CC Blitz Soccer Club offers compeeeve youth soccer teams for all Fremont County youth players.

Teams are available for boys and girls from ages 8 to 18, depending on player numbers. The Spring 2024 Season runs March through May with four home games and four away games. All home games and praceces are held at Mountain View Park in Cañon City; away games can be played across the state.

Player registraeon for Spring 2024 opens on November 1st. Register by January 1st so teams can be formed before the CSA Advanced League team registraeon deadline.

We have Pilates Classes on Monday evenings at the Recreation District office Community Room.

Classes are taught by Jules Meeker a certified Pilates Instructor with 17 years’ experience. Sessions are 6 weeks long. You must sign up for the six-week session. Watch our Facebook and website for class dates.

Pilates focuses on strengthening muscles, lower back, pelvic floor, hips, glutes, and abdominals through a series of exercises. These exercises are sure to sculpt your muscles and give your body a lean look. Likewise, Pilates can improve your posture as stretching is a vital part of this exercise. This low-impact exercise burns fat and helps you shed calories and is great for any age or body.

Flow Yoga Classes

We have Flow Yoga Classes on Wednesday evenings at the Recreation District office Community Room. Classes are taught by Tenile Lenard, a certified Yoga instructor. Sessions are 6 weeks long. You must sign up for the six-week session. Watch our Facebook page and website for class dates.

Flow Yoga is characterized by a sequence of postures that move from one to another, seamlessly, using breath. A variety of poses will be offered and no two classes are ever alike. Beginners and advanced students are welcome! Expect a fully balanced class of standing, forward bending, twists, balancing poses, backbends, seated poses and even an opportunity for inversions. Modifications will be provided in every class.

WRESTLING CLUB The Cañon City Wrestling Club, formerly known as Lockdown, is gearing up for the 2023/2024 season. The head coach this year is former 4-A State Champion, Rico Garcia. He will be assisted by current Cañon City High School wrestling coach Jeremy Gilkerson. This wrestling club is the next step for area youth after the Recreation District wrestling program.

All practices will be held in the CCHS Wrestling Room at the back of the building, near the football practice fields, on Monday’s and Wednesday’s starting November 6th. A third practice will be added starting on December 11th. Tournaments are held on weekends and the coaches will provide schedules and information. This program is for both boys and girls and for all ability levels from beginner to advanced.

Fees:

$75 per person (if you are in the Recreation District program speak with the club coaches about potential discounts) All participants are required to purchase a USA Wrestling Card for $20

Practices: Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7:30 pm starting November 6th

A third practice will be held on Thursdays starting December 11th

Adult Softball (First Season)

The 2024 Adult Softball program will consist of two seasons. The First Season will run from May through the middle of July. The Second Season will follow from early August through October. The First Season information is posted below. Teams must provide their own balls. Rules and policies will be reviewed at the managers meeting before the season begins.

Teams will play an 8-game season followed by an end of season double elimination tournament. Regular season games may be made up on weekday evenings and the tournaments for Season I could be played on a weekend if rainouts occur! Each team is guaranteed 10-games. Leagues and teams will be adjusted based on numbers. The end of season double elimination tournament will determine each league’s champions. League play is for tournament seeding only. The designated nights of league play are as follows: MONDAYS: Co-Ed League WEDNESDAYS: Men’s League (Upper and Lower Division) REGISTRATION: January 29th – April 5th GAMES BEGIN: Week of April 29th **Game times can start as early as 5:30pm and as late as 9:30pm. The Recreation District’s annual Turkey Bowl will be held on Saturday, November 18th. The Turkey Bowl is a 4-on4 Flag Football tournament with 7-different divisions.

Rosters are limited to 6-players. The Turkey Bowl is open to teams in the age groups listed below. Register early as only the first 60 teams to register will be accepted due to the limited number of fields.

TURKEY TROT FUN RUN

The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District will host the Turkey Trot Fun Run at Pathfinder Park on Saturday, November 18th. The 5K run will begin at 10 a.m. The course is on maintained trails and dirt roads with little to no elevation changes. This run is all about having fun as it is not a timed event. We encourage all participants to dress in their best Thanksgiving costume and we will have an award for the best costume. This run is to encourage people to get outside, have a good time, and get some exercise. Pets may participate in the event, but the owners are responsible for cleaning up after them, and they must be on a leash. Pets can dress up too! Following the run, we encourage everyone to hang out at Pathfinder Park for awards and enjoy our food vendors. All early registrants will receive a T-shirt, and participants who register late will get a T-shirt while supplies last.

The center of the Arkansas Riverwalk lies within John Griffin Park. The trail loops through John Griffin Park with two separate trails, the River Trail and the Bluff Trail. John Griffin Park is a natural area complete with wetlands and wildlife. There are numerous park benches throughout John Griffin Park, but bring your own water as there is none available.

The Arkansas Riverwalk contains seven-miles of trail that winds along the Arkansas River through Cañon City and beyond. The trail covers many types of terrain and natural areas including dense cottonwood forests and native wetlands. The trail has a hard-packed, crushed gravel surface and follows an old railroad bed much of the way. The trail is open to many uses, which include running, walking, biking and even horseback riding on the John Griffin Park Bluff Trail. Your dogs are welcome too, but please keep them on a leash and be sure to pick 5800'

The Tunnel Drive Trailhead is located west of Cañon City off of Highway 50 and overlooks the Arkansas River and railroad tracks as it heads west into the entrance of the Royal Gorge. Aftermath Haunted House For the past seven years Aftermath has been rated as one of the top haunted houses in the state of Colorado and now is the time for you to find out why. We use the natural landscape and house to the east of the Recreation District office to create the ultimate fright, both indoors and out. Come and witness the horror and darkness of Halloween like never before. Inside the house you will lose all sense of direction as you wind your way through the rooms. Every room has a different experience, all to give you a scare you won’t soon forget.

The entrance is located inside of the Rec District office community room at 575 Ash Street.

Free parking is available by the Dog Park and at the Arkansas Riverwalk parking lots on both sides of Ash St. All children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult and have parent permission. Remember the event is also outdoors, so dress appropriately. We will see you at Aftermath this October.

The Canon City Area Recreation and Park District and The City of Canon City will be partnering again this year for the 2024 Clean Up / Green Up. The Arkansas River and Riverwalk along with other trails throughout Canon City will be the focus of this year’s Clean Up. There will be breakfast offered to all of our volunteers. Everyone is encouraged to attend, especially the Riverwalk users. Plan to join us for breakfast at 8:00 a.m. With cleaning beginning at 9:00 a.m. Garbage bags will be provided. Please bring your own work clothes and gloves.

CARA SKILLS CHALLENGE Bring your kids, your grandkids and all their friends to this fun event.

The CARA Skills Challenge is a FREE skills competition for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 13 years old to compete separately against their peers. This basketball skills challenge program tests kids on their passing, dribbling and shooting abilities.
