A Cañon City tradition
Music & Blossom Festival’s origins trace back to 1894 Carie Canterbury The Daily Record The Cañon City Music & Blossom Festival has been celebrated by the community for more than eight decades, but it’s actually been a staple in the community in one form or another for nearly 130 years. The festival has been known as the Cañon City Music & Blossom Festival for 84 years, but it can be traced back to when the city’s Fruit Day/Apple Day was celebrated in September 1894. “The Blossom Festival was originally a way for the orchard owners and farmers to get people into the community, and they would celebrate at the harvest,” said Cassie Grow, president of the Cañon City Music & Blossom Festival Committee. “When Blossom first came about, it was in the fall, but back then it was hard to travel to this area in a valley in the fall and winter so the orchard owners and farmers decided to start celebrating the blossoms of their harvest – that’s how Blossom came to be in May of every year.” The first recorded mention of a festival in Cañon City was in the 1860s in the Cañon City Times. According to the Cañon City Music & Blossom Festival’s website and the book, “Every Picture Tells a Story” by Larry Thomas Wood, by the 1880s, residents were celebrating Fruit Day as both an acknowledgment of their remarkable harvests and a way to acquaint neighboring communities with their bountiful products. The 1890s found Fruit Day being organized by the Fremont County Horticultural Society, with as many as 10,000 annual visitors enjoying this one day event. They came primarily by passenger train from such far-off places as Denver, Colorado Springs, LaJunta and Rocky Ford. Paper plates filled with apples, plums, pears, peaches and grapes were given away to all visitors. The fruit was displayed in grand fashion in a large 50-foot pavilion on Main Street and in a delicate manner at the opera house. The Rocky Mountain News reported that 16 tons of fruit were distributed in 1894 alone. After World War I, the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce began sponsoring the annual event until 1938 when the Jaycees took the reins. The Blossom Festival began to incorporate bands, a carnival, a dance at the Annex, boxing at the State Armory and the parade down Main Street. Many of those traditions continue today, in addition to new activities and events for the entire family, hosted by the Cañon City Music & Blossom Festival Committee. 2 • MAY 3, 2022 •
