Clearing Up Common Misconceptions The CCRD is not part of the City of Cañon City. Each is a separate entity. The CCRD does not receive any funds from sales tax or fines. City projects include Centennial Park, street repaving on city streets and Main Street bumpouts. These are not CCRD projects. The swimming pool is owned and operated by the CCRD, not the City of Cañon City. The CCRD’s full-time staff is paid 20 to 40 percent less than other recreation districts or municipalities similarly sized, based on National Recreation and Park Association figures. Income derived from the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park goes to the city, not the CCRD. GOCO can fund about $350,000 of an outdoor pool, but not an indoor facility. This is not a city-led issue, it is led by REC, an independent citizen group. There are 19 rec centers communities similarly sized or smaller than Cañon City, but no YMCAs. Planners looked at 14 potential properties and settled on the Abbey property for the purpose of a feasibility study. They decided the Shadow Hills golf course was too far off U.S. 50. Local gym memberships typically increase in communities where they add rec centers because the community as a whole wants to get healthier. The current pool has significantly outlived its lifespan because of the “dedication of previous boards and maintenance staff.” If it had been mismanaged, it would have closed 20 years ago, according to the auditor. said. A couple of meeting attendees suggested building the center in phases, but Mary Kay Evans, who also serves on the school board,

had a different point of view. Knowing the school district had two schools that needed replacing, the board

Certified Master Installers: When it comes to installations, experience matters. Our crews have installed thousands of windows and must pass our tough certification program. And if they’re not respectful and clean, we won’t hire them.

Superior Material: Our composite Fibrex® window material is 2X stronger than vinyl, which is why our windows will last for years.**
