Florence High School students write, direct play to benefit the Rialto Theater By Chris Graham The Daily Record
FLORENCE — Students at Florence High School will put on an original play, “Twelve Too Many,” from Jan. 18-20 in the Florence High School auditorium. The students wrote the script and will direct it themselves without the help of any teachers. Two seniors were inspired to write the play because of a performance they saw at Cañon City High School. LaNae Terrian and Talia Smith saw the “Wizard of Oz” play at CCHS and were inspired to create a play of their own. “We saw Cañon’s play, and we were really inspired by it,” Smith said. “Either we need to go to Cañon or this needs to happen at Florence,” added Terrian. A lack of theater and music at FHS added another reason for the two seniors to put on the play. “We were sad we didn’t have this opportunity in high school,” Terrian said. “We wanted to give this opportunity to our underclassmen.” There will be a cast of about 30 students, and there will be more than 12 songs, including original scores. “This performance would bring people to know the talent that we have in Florence,” Smith said. The play will be set on a fictional island in the Irish sea that other countries need for a tactical reason so the island goes to war. The king of the island lost his wife before the story starts, and the king also has 12 daughters that he must take care of while leading a country. Tickets can be purchased for $15 at the main office of FHS, Papa’s Pizza in Florence and Mugs in Cañon City. People also can purchase tickets at the door, but dinner will not be included. All money will be donated to the Rialto Theatre in Florence. Dinner will be at 5 p.m., seating is at 5:45 p.m., and the play will start at 6 p.m. in the FHS auditorium. This will be the only play of the school year, but some of the students who are not graduating after this year have expressed interest in trying to continue doing performances in the next school year.

(Carie Canterbury / Daily Record) Josh Race and the Cañon City High School Tiger Pride Marching Band were recognized during Monday’s school board meeting for taking first place at the Class 3A Colorado Bandmasters Association State Championship in October.
Cañon City School Board honors CCHS band for first state championship By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record More than 200,000 steps and 229 hours of practice, about 125 dedicated students, 92 rehearsal days, six half-time performances, six competitions and two parades all boil down to one first-ever Cañon City High School state championship. Josh Race and the Cañon City High School Tiger Pride Marching Band were recognized during Monday’s school board meeting for taking first place at the Class 3A Colorado Bandmasters Association State Championship in October. The meeting was conducted in the auditorium at CCHS to accommodate students and parents. “There was a lot of blood, sweat and tears, and an incredible sheriff and police department escort from the county line all the way to the high school (when returning from the championship),” said Shad Johnson, who is a school board member and band parent. During the meeting, each band and color guard member received a certificate and memento from the board of education. Board Director Larry Oddo congratulated the band on a “wildly successful” marching band season that culminated in them bringing home the 3A state championship trophy for its performance of “The Blessing.” “What a great program, what a beautiful message and what a talented group of people,” he said. “This level of excellence is certainly attributed to great leadership — we commend Mr. Josh Race for providing the vision and passion to motivate his musicians to believe in themselves and to reach for the stars.” Oddo also acknowledged the other band staff members Mike and Stephanie Nolan, Cortney Richardson, Kylie Brosh, Danette Ploughman, Paul Macias, Nick Peterson and Shilo Stroman, as well as the parents, sponsors, band boosters and cloud operators for their continued support to the program. He said drum majors Chris Hudson, Makenzie Konty and Andre Konty and various section leaders set the bar high and provided the on-field leadership necessary for compelling performances. “It was the efforts of everyone, through your dedication and commitment to learn the music, to perfect the drill and to perform as a team with compassion

The students placed second out of 255 teams nationally during a recent JROTC postal match. and heart,” Oddo said. “Each one of you holding each other up, that’s what wins championships.” He said this model behavior carries through to offfield activities, as well. “This board is constantly reminded of what fine ladies and gentlemen you all are, and we are proud to have you serve as ambassadors to Cañon City,” he said. Also during the meeting, the CCHS JROTC Rifle Team students Colin DiOrio, Riley Mills, Joe Perez and Kylie Henninger were recognized for placing second out of 255 teams nationally during a recent JROTC postal match. The board approved a request for the team to travel to Chandler, Ariz., Feb. 7-11,
where they will compete in the JROTC Service Championship. The United States Army will cover 90 percent of the associated costs of the trip. In other business, the board took the following action: — Approved iLearn Collaborative as the awarded vendor for educational consulting services for mobile 1-to-1 deployment, initially for CCHS and McKinley School staff. The board approved an anticipated total cost of $71,275 for three years for continuation of consulting and professional development services for deploying mobile devices to all remaining schools. This is part of the mobile initiatives made possible by the mill levy that was passed in November.
