Damon "Don" Chumbley January 18, 1933 ~ July 11, 2018

Damon "Don" Chumbley, age 85, of Canon City, God reached down and took his hand and led him to his final journey home on July 11, 2018.

He was born on January 18, 1933 in Wichita Falls, Texas, the son of Delbert and Ada (Plemmons) Chumbley.

From 1953-1959 Don served in the US Navy where he completed a tour of duty in Hawaii, aboard the USS Cormorant working as a minesweeper.

After the military, he worked for the California Department of Corrections for 7 years.

Moving to Canon City in 1977, he sold real estate for Glen Eller and Ernie Crossley. In 1978 he began working for the Colorado Department of Corrections, (Centennial) retiring in 1998 after 20 years of service.

Don met his wife Rosa Chuck in Canon City, Colorado where they were happily married for forty years.

Don is survived by his wife, Rosa; brother, Glenn Chumbley; sons, Torrance (Carin), Brent (Rachel), Todd ( Christina ) Chumbley, Mark (Terri) Chuck; daughter, Jill (Harlan) Ottaway; grandsons, Brandon (Monica) Ottaway, Dylan Ottaway, Trevor Chumbley, Hunter Emmert, Joseph and Gunner Chumbley, Spencer and Brice Chuck; granddaughter, Abigail Chumbley; great-granddaughter, Paige Ottaway (due September 2018)along with numerous sister and brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends who are family, dear to our hearts.

Memorial service, 11 a.m. Friday July 27, 2018 at Wilson Memorial Chapel, 1449 S. 9th Street, Canon City, Colorado 81212.

Esther Ruth Howe June 3, 1933 ~ July 3, 2018

Esther Ruth Howe, 85, of Canon City passed away July 3, 2018. She was born on June 3, 1933 in Booker, Texas to Ray and Ruth (Weir) Raupe.

Esther grew up in Colorado and lived with her husband of 64 years, James Howe.

Esther was not only graced with such a great husband, the Lord gave her two children, Kevin Howe and Rychele Lawton.

Through her children came all their friends who became her kids too.

Esther was the type of person that if she knew you then you were blessed. She gave more

than she received. Her hobbies were reading, gardening and watching Blue Bloods.

Esther is survived by her sister, Florence Burk; brothers, Norman Raupe and Wayne Raupe; along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, several brothers, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Shopper collecting donations for firefighters

With several wildfires burning across Colorado, the Cañon City Shopper is collecting donations to aid the hundreds of firefighters battling those fires.

Items needed include water, snacks, beef jerky, sunscreen, bug spray and personal care items.

Frank Monahan Jr. December 7, 1946 ~ July 14, 2018

Frank Monahan Jr., Age 71, passed away on July 14, 2018 in Canon City, Colorado.

He was born on December 7, 1946 in Covina, California to Frank Monahan Sr. and Edna Vanderbilt (neé Armstrong).

Frank was a US Army Vietnam veteran. Not long after his military service was completed he went to work for the Portec Company where he worked for 30 years as a welder until his retirement.

All of his family will miss Frank and knew him as a man of the outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing, and he taught all of his sons and grandsons to do the same.

Frank is preceded in death by both of his parents and mother-in-law, Louise Aragon.

He is survived by his two sisters, Jean Harp and Dot Hodnet as well

as one brother, Don Hoza; Four children, Frank Monahan (Cindy Gall), Mona Monahan (James Coulter), Jamie Monahan (Monica Monahan), Joshua Monahan; eight grandchildren, Carly Monahan, Michael Monahan, Jacob Monahan, Alex Provost, Layla Monahan, Delilah Monahan, Owen Monahan, Trevin Monahan: two great grandchildren, Eric Monahan and Josyles Rivera.

A very special thanks to Liza Ramage and all the staff at Sangre de Cristo for all the love and care they gave.

Walter Daniel "Red" Jerauld July 17, 1933 ~ July 12, 2018

Walter Daniel "Red" Jerauld, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 12th in Canon City, with family and loved ones at his bedside.

He was just five days shy of 85 years old.

Red was born on July 17, 1933 in Arlington, Kansas to Sylvester and Lottie Jerauld. He was one of six children.

In 1958, he married Marie (who passed away in 2010) and together they moved to Canon City and raised her son, James.

Red was a prison guard at the Colorado State Penitentiary for 27 years, where he was known as "Big Red." After he retired, he worked at Middick's Locksmith Shop for several years, sharpening blades for many satisfied customers.

Red loved fishing with Marie and his grandkids. He also loved bowling and was a senior bowling superstar as part of local bowling league for many years.

After living in Canon City for nearly 60 years, Red made many friends and acquaintances, and

he was known for being friendly and personable to all, as well as telling plenty of "fish" stories and regaling loved ones with tales from his years at the prison.

He will be missed dearly by those who knew and loved him.

Red is survived by brother, Morris Jerauld, of Corpus Christi, TX; grandson, Daniel (Theresa) Gee of Pueblo, CO; granddaughter-in-law Meagan (Tyler) Gee-Henry of Sierra Vista, AZ; great grandchildren, Kira and Lachlan Gee of Sierra Vista, AZ; and dear friend and neighbor, Deloris Babb and her children.

Memorial service, 6:00 p.m. Sunday, July 15,2018 at the little Church of Christ on the 1100 block of Main Street (next to Mane Tamer Hair Salon.)

George D. Relich May 31, 1928 ~ July 13, 2018

George D. Relich, age 90, passed away on July 13, 2018 with his wife Catherine at his side.

George was born on May 31, 1928 in Pueblo, Colorado to Mark Relich Sr. and Julia Relich (nee' Ratkovich).

He was married to his love, Catherine Vendetti, on September 16, 1950 and then left shortly thereafter for basic training in the US Army where he served in the Korean War. Later he moved his family to Canon City, Colorado where he built his own home and raised a family of seven children. He worked as a professional welder and repairman at CF&I in Pueblo, Colorado until his retirement.

George was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing in his younger years. He and his family would often take vacation trips to the mountains in a camper that he built with his own hands. He loved to garden as well, and his family says he was renowned as being one who could grow anything, from his beloved apple orchard of 200+ trees, rows of vegetables of all kinds that fed his family, to his famous giant pumpkins that made the news.

He never met a stranger and would often sit for lengthy periods of time talking to someone he met at a store, on a public bench or just about anywhere really. He was always eager to share stories

about his time serving during the Korean War and was always giving advice to everyone, even if they didn't ask.

In his later years, he and his wife would sit on their front porch and make friends with passersby, some of whom became regular visitors to their home.

George is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Catherine (née Vendetti) Relich of Canon City; his children, Danny (Trena) Relich, Steve (Cindy) Relich, Julia (Fred) Radtke, Connie (Tom) Martin, Nick (Denise) Relich, Gail (Page Dexter) Conroy, 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one more on the way along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mark Sr. and Julia Relich, George was preceded in death by his brother Mark Relich, Jr. and his daughter, Diana Hallett.

The family would like to thank the CNA's, nurses and volunteers from Sangre de Cristo hospice for their care and compassion. At his request, no public service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in George's name to Sangre de Christo Hospice.

Richard David Gilland, 67, of Colorado Springs and Canon City went home to be with the Lord July 15, 2018.

He was born December 12, 1950 in Pueblo, Colorado to Margaret Delila Gilland.

He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was a union carpenter, outstanding musical talent, an actor, a licensed song writer, a veteran, a police officer and an entrepreneur.

Those who remain to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Linda; daughters, DaLin and Margaret; grandchildren, Richard, Zoe and Brooke;

brother, Albert E. Wood; niece, Becky Langston; nephew, Albert O. Wood along with many other nieces and nephews which are too many to name.

Bob's eldest son, Jeff, was born in 1973. His second, more-handsome son, was born in 1978.

Bob was a tremendous father, imparting both his small town values and his real world pragmatism. He shared his love of baseball and golf. He fostered a vigorous appetite for new ideas and intellectual curiosity, pushing his sons to explore the world and to duly report back what they discovered.

Bob understood his obligation to his fellow-man, and devoted significant amounts of his time to the community. He was active in the Boulder County Community Corrections Board, where he served as vice-chairman, and supported several local charities, including HOPE for Longmont.

Bob is remembered by his friends and family for his unrivaled compassion, generosity, and authentic nature.

His sense of humor, though dubious, was legendary. Quick with a line, sharp with a quote, and always ready with a hug. He will be sorely missed by those who had the great fortune to know him.

Robert "Bob" Peck Robert "Bob" Peck, ardent humanist, devoted husband, compassionate father, baseball lover, Vietnam veteran, and overall great guy passed away at home surrounded by family on July 5th, age 71, in Longmont, Colorado.

Bob is survived by his wife, Joan, his sons, Sean and Jeff, his sister Paula, his brother Phil, and his new grandson, Hudson Robert. Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia.

Born on December 14, 1946 in Cañon City, Colorado, to the late Marjorie Shugart and the late Fletcher Peck, Bob was a genuine product of small-town Americana. Graduating high school in the mid-60s, he enlisted in the US Army in anticipation of being drafted, and suddenly found himself in the heat of Vietnam, southwest of Saigon.

Bob earned his medals and returned home older and wiser.

Bob graduated from CU in 1976, with a B.S. in Recreation. He loved the outdoors, and Colorado, and began his career with the City of Boulder, working on Pearl Street mall in the 1970s. Bob would eventually retire with the City of Boulder in 2003 as the Manager of Urban Parks, after 33 years of flowers, park design, and even a little firefighting.

Bob married Joan Kenny on Friday, January 5th, 1973. He was a consistently loving, and somewhat annoying husband, throughout the whole of their 45 year marriage.

Betty Osborn

June 24, 1925 ~ July 13, 2018 Betty Osborn, age 93, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus our Lord on Friday July 13, 2018 at Skyline Ridge Care Center.

Betty was born on June 24, 1925 in Osawatomie, Kansas to Roscoe and Dana (née Potts) Evinger.

An active Christian her entire life, Betty was a member of the Osawatomie Pilgrim Holiness Church as a child and also a member of the Osawatomie Christian Church in her young adult years. After marrying her husband Clifford, the both of them regularly attended the Kansas City First Church of the Nazarene in Kansas City, Missouri from 1960 to present.

While raising her family in Kansas City, she enjoyed her career as a cashier with the Gilbert Robinson Fine Restaurants of Kansas City for 13 years. She also opened and operated her own preschool business teaching and loving infants and toddlers for over 15 years before retiring.

Her talents and hobbies included home decorating, shopping, cooking, baking, entertaining in her home, flower gardening, playing hymns on her piano, traveling to the beach as well as road trips visiting her family and friends with her husband.

Betty and her loving husband lived a beautiful life in the Kansas City area with their family, and a fun well deserved retirement in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

She loved and treasured all of her nieces, nephews, cousins, and her many dearly loved friends throughout the country.

She is survived by her youngest daughter, Teresa (Osborn) Knox;

Religious Fine Art Show announces call to artists

The Abbey Events Complex in Cañon City announces a call

to artists for the ninth annual Religious Fine Art Show opening Aug. 14.

The show is seeking works in a wide range of media and genres, that are religious, (all religions accepted), inspirational or Abbey related in some way. All mediums will be accepted including but not limited to oil, watercolor, pastel, chalk/pencil, printmaking, sculpture, photography, digital art, mixed media, illustrations, fiber art, etc. The show seeks both quality and creativity. Large art pieces are welcome. Professionals, as well as artists of all ages,

“We are striving to make it a more pleasant place to come, and do what you need to do” Melanie said.

Saturdays in The Abbey Monastery. Admission to the art show is free. An artist reception will be from 1-3 p.m. Oct. 6. Tickets to the artist reception are $10 each.

A “People’s Choice” award will be given in the adult category and children’s category at the artist reception.

New barber joins Phil’s Barber Shop

Just when you thought you knew what the Barber Shop Mafia was going to do, they threw in a curveball.

Tara Caldwell can now be found slinging haircuts at Phil’s Barber Shop. Caldwell whom has eight years in hair industry brings a new style to Phil’s.

“I never thought I’d be working at a barbershop, but it all just fell into place so perfectly,” Caldwell said.

Owner Brandon Smith said, “I call it the Kat VonD effect, if we would have brought in another guy, people would have expected that, we like doing the unexpected, and Tara fits the model perfect, her haircuts are on point and she’s breathed a little life into the shop.”

Phil’s Barber Shop is now located at 508 Main St. across from Pizza Madness.

They made their move in February from their starter location on Fourth Street.
