Billy Royce Platz

January 30, 1930 - May 6, 2018 Billy Royce Platz, 88, passed away on May 6, 2018, in Canon City, Colorado. He was born on January 30, 1930, in Rocky Ford, CO, to Ora and Lola Platz, being the 7th child of 11 children. He and his family relocated to Moffat, CO, where he completed elementary through high school.

His years at home taught him farming, carpentry, mechanics, hunting, trapping, fishing, and well drilling. After graduation from Moffat High School, he served in the Air Force for four years, during the Korean War. After his service he went back to his home town of Moffat in the San Luis Valley and worked in his father's well drilling business, and the Climax Mine.

Soon after, he married Phyllis Margaret Fultz of Hooper, CO., and they had a son, Billy R. Platz Jr. They divorced and he married Sue Ann Kelling of Lyons, CO, and they had three children, Cindy, Jack and Pamela Platz (Sattler). They later divorced and Billy and his brother Richard and his family went north to Alaska when it was still a territory seeking employment and adventure. He fell in love with Alaska and worked all over the state, including the Aleutian Islands and Kodiak doing commercial insulation.

He belonged to Local 97 out of Anchorage, the Moose, and ELKS clubs.

He then traveled to

New Mexico to remarry his first wife, Phyllis, and together they returned to Alaska where she worked for the state and the Alaskan pipeline, and he continued working for Local 97. Later he formed his own insulation company and continued to work until 1994 when he and Phyllis retired and relocated to Canon City, CO. Billy enjoyed hunting, fishing, mining, trapping, and building multiple small and large projects. He lived his whole life in the country and always had a dog or two and spoiled them.

In his later years, he and his dog Ben would head to town to get the mail, water, and then to Florence CO, to eat at Two Sisters (where they called him Uncle Billy), and then Ben enjoyed the leftovers.

Billy is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis, and eight siblings. He leaves behind two sisters, four children, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. God willing, we'll all be together again someday.

Nancy Guthrie

February 15, 1942 - May 29, 2018 Nancy Guthrie, 76, of Cheyenne, formerly of Canon City, CO, passed away May 29, 2018 in Cheyenne.

She was born February 15, 1942 in Cheyenne to Richard and Florence Rath. She was a registered nurse with Lifecare Center and was a lifelong Christian and a member of Cheyenne Garden Club and Canon City Garden Club.

She is survived by her children Steven (Joanne) Guthrie of Colorado Springs, CO and Lisa (Val Mundy) Guthrie of Englewood,

CO; grandchildren, Courtney White, James Guthrie, Adrianna Healy, Mathias Guthrie; greatgrandchildren, Orion Tenbrink and Zachary Tenbrink; and a sister, Sandra Dunn of Cheyenne.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services will be Sunday 1:00 p.m. in the Lakeview Chapel at Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home.

Dillon Brett Matthews July 15, 1986 ~ June 1, 2018

Dillon Brett Matthews, 31, passed away June 1, 2018 in Pueblo West, Colorado.

He was born into his loving family on July 15, 1986 in Canon City, Colorado.

Dillon grew up in Canon City and graduated from Canon City High School in 2004. While in high school, Dillon competed on the golf team, and came through with the final score to get his team to the championship match.

Dillon was generous and exceptional in many ways: He was a big man with an even bigger heart and infectious smile. He never met a stranger and was an entrepreneur in the best sense-by being able to see a need and help others. He followed his passion of bringing joy to peoples lives and created Colorado Mountain Anglers, a successful business-doing for a living what he loved, fishing and putting people on fish. He always said he loved going to "my office" guiding on Pueblo reservoir, Spinney, Eleven Mile, Blue Mesa, Antero, and Tarryall.

Dillon's love for the water passed on to his daughter, Ariya. The two loved being on the water together and were both "water-bugs".

Because Dillon was a fishing guide, this allowed him to spend countless hours with his baby. Dillon and Ariya did everything together and had an amazing bond. In Dillon's words, having a baby girl "is

like catching a 30 inch trout, but better."

As a little boy, Dillon quickly learned how to fly fish from his grandpa Bud, and his heart was always on a lake, especially with his baby daughter. He was a true outdoorsman and a free spirit, and never forgot to say "I Love You" to his family.

Dillon is survived by his significant other, Charlie Grandt of Pueblo West; his daughter, Ariya; his parents, Mark Matthews of Mesa, Arizona and Tracy (Tony) Sullivan of Canon City; sister, Aleis (Robby) Richardson of Gunnison; brother, Taylor Matthews of Aurora; step-brother, Cole Sullivan of Canon City; maternal grandparents, Bud and Carolyn McIntosh of Pueblo West; paternal grandparent, Andi Townsend of Texarkana; and a niece, Brooklyn Richardson. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Leroy Matthews; great-grandparents, Forrest and June McIntosh, Alice Kendall and Harvey Leeper.

Willa Mae Crick June 4, 1927 ~ May 19, 2018

Willa Mae Crick, 90, passed away May 19, 2018 at Hildebrand Care Center in Canon City.

She was born to Harold L. and Irene A. (Rudeen) Crick in Palisade, Colorado on June 4, 1927 and was a graduate of Grand Junction High School and Colorado State University. She spent two years each in Alaska and Germany serving in the U.S. Army Reserve Special Services, earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

As an Occupational Therapist, she worked for the Veterans Administration in multiple hospitals around the United States during her career. A longtime member of the

Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.), Willa Mae was passionate about playing bridge, enjoying her pets, camping with Loners on Wheels and travelling. She moved to Canon City in 2014 from Arizona.

Charlotte H. Johnson 1926 - 2018

Charlotte H. Johnson, age 92, of Edina.

Beloved mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, and friend.

Charlotte graduated from High School in Canon City, CO in 1943. She worked at two Civil Service jobs at Peterson Field Air Base and at the Colorado Army Base during World War II. Charlotte met and married the love of her life, Russell C. Johnson, on October 2, 1945. In 1955, they founded Russ Johnson Nursery, located in Bloomington and Prior Lake, which they owned until retiring in 1988.

Charlotte was a beloved person known for her unwavering love for her family and friends.

Charlotte was preceded in death by

parents, Hershel and Ruth Gist; and husband, Russ.

She is survived by her loving children, Vicki (John) Volker and Terry Johnson; grandchildren, Chris, Ben (Sarah), and Taylor; great-grand children, Breanna, Jack, and Ava; and brother-in-law, Ken (Jean) Johnson, and their children, Jeff (son-Chris), Greg, and Sandra.

Roberts selected for health care executive program Valley-Wide Health Systems’ Chief Operating Officer, Adam Roberts, was recently selected as a participant in the 2018 UCLA/Johnson & Johnson Health Care Executive Program. The distinguished management program accepts just 40 individuals across the nation each year, all of whom will participate in a rigorous 11-day program in July on UCLA’s campus in Brentwood, Calif.

“It is both humbling and a huge honor to be accepted into the Health Care Executive Program,” Roberts said. “The opportunity to learn and collaborate with other health care leaders of community health centers across the country is invaluable.

I am looking forward to applying this learning to practices that will directly benefit Valley-Wide.”

The program, which is put on

by UCLA’s Anderson School of Management in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson, offers a curriculum designed to assist community health centers with the many changes and challenges occurring in health care today.

Among its offerings, the curriculum includes courses in effective management, social determinants of health, techniques for enhancing the patient experience, energy for human performance and leading and managing organizational change.

Roberts joined Valley-Wide in the fall of 2015 as the organization’s Chief Operating Officer. He has overseen the implementation of the organization’s Strategic Plan, as well as the development of the organization’s behavioral health service line. The development of the behavioral health service line has moved the organization towards operating fully-integrated healthcare clinics.

Additionally, Roberts has introduced LEAN methodology throughout various service lines and deployed the utilization of visual management boards across clinical and administrative areas. LEAN methodology focuses on improving system efficiencies by creating more value for customers by analyzing key processes, reducing waste, and continuously improving.

The 2018 program will take place July 9-19.

“On behalf of Valley-Wide, I would like to congratulate Adam on his acceptance to this stellar program,” said Valley-Wide CEO, Gigi Darricades. “The knowledge he will gain from participating in this program will be of significant benefit to Valley-Wide.”

Hotel St. Cloud to be put up for auction

The historic Hotel St. Cloud is expected to be put up for auction to the public after efforts to raise funds for its restoration have been slow going.

The hotel at 631 Main St., and the entire downtown district, are listed on the National Historic Register.

“It is no secret that the FOY has had its challenges in generating community and public financial support for its efforts,” a letter Wednesday from the FOY to the city council states. “The foundation has had many Cañon City fundraising events and cumulatively has not raised enough matching funds for one grant.”

The board of directors for the nonprofit Future of Yesterday Foundation announced in September 2014 its intent to raise $3 million to fully restore the hotel back to its 1890 grandeur. At the time, it was expected to be a three- to five-year project.

During a tour in July 2017 with city officials, the board said that timeline more likely would be eight years.

HLC Enterprises, a property management and real estate company who focuses on property restoration, became owners of the Hotel St. Cloud in 2008 because of a loan default.

In December 2012, dozens of community members petitioned the city to help find a way to preserve the building when word got out that HLC may have had plans for demolition because of costly upkeep.

“This is not being considered because we want to. It’s a matter of common sense and good business,” FOY board president Erin (Tierney) Mahoney stated in a press release after that meeting.

In May 2017, the board asked the community to consider supporting a GoFundMe account for matching grant dollars and building restoration. So far, $1,200 of the $700,000 goal had been met.

As of July 2017, the FOY had successfully garnered nearly $350,000 in grants from the Colorado State Historical Fund that went toward roof rehabilitation, parapet repair and foundation investigation and stabilization. The FOY also had contributed more than $150,000 in matching funds toward the project.

The letter Wednesday states Mahoney was approached by members of city council last year about leasing the parking lot adjacent to the hotel in exchange for payment of property taxes

totalling $994 and a yearly sum of $3,000.

The board declined the offer and instead offered to sell the city the parking lot for appraised value if the city would take the hotel for free and complete the restoration, the letter states.

“This was a win-win proposal,” the letter states. “The foundation would be able to carry out its mission, and the city would have property in the heart of downtown. Cañon City would be in a unique position to breathe new life into its downtown core, as it has the means to complete the restorative work that the foundation had set into motion.”

Councilman Jim Meisner said the initial inquiry about renting the parking lot had nothing to do with the donation issue.

“Records will show that the city was actively pursuing additional downtown parking at the

time we made the parking time limit changes for downtown,” he said. “The parking lot was not being used, and we thought it made sense for a short-term win-win.

The offer of donation came later.”

The council has met in executive session to discuss the proposal, and citizens will be asked their feelings on the matter in this year’s citizen survey, which is expected to be mailed between June 13-27.

Meisner said he was surprised to learn that the property was going to auction, but he does have concerns about the future financial impact on the city should it accept the hotel.

“To restore the building is going to be significant, and when we do that, what do we do with it?,” he said. “We don’t have a real need for it, and do we need to spend the money that it’s going to

take to restore a building downtown?”

Mayor Preston Troutman said he feels the city shouldn’t take on the financial liability of refurbishing and running the hotel, but the city may be willing to accept it and find a private company that would lease it and run it.

“We would be happy to do that, we would even be happy to buy the parking lot,” he said. “We will lease it out to a company that would renovate it with their own money — who knows, a 50-year lease for $1 — it’s essentially theirs, but it stays in possession of the city for architectural control reasons.”

Meisner said the council has been waiting for more information before moving ahead with any formal decision.

“Council was reluctant to just take the building, realizing that if they take the building, they are committing to a future financial commitment,” he said. “We are trying to look at options and what makes sense and what we can do, and you can’t do that overnight.”

He said because the hotel is a historical building, even to raze the structure may be next to impossible.

The letter from FOY states that “without the implied financial support of the city, we are unable to move forward. The board of the foundation and its supporters love Fremont County, but has found it to be an insurmountable obstacle to deal with the City of Cañon City on a project that would serve only to benefit the city, its people and the downtown economy.”

Meisner said he believes that the current council will do whatever it can to support restoration of the St. Cloud, but it should be noted that the FOY is private (nonprofit) organization.

Luck spent seven years living and working abroad and through that

experience has developed a unique appreciation for the blessings that Americans enjoy. She also understands how important it is for each person to embrace a passion and persevere to build something of value.

“One of the amazing realities of living in America is that each of us can take initiative to change our surroundings,” Luck said. “We do not have to depend on the government. If Stephanie Luck we care about something, we can do something.”

1. Everyone is welcome to take part in this event, except for professional river guides. (judges’ discretion) 2. All boat owners must transport their boat to and from the river. Owners are responsible for all flotsam and gear adrift. Keep the river clean!

3. NO Pre-Manufactured Boats. The boat must be made by the competitors specifically for the event. You may not use, as the foundation of your craft, a boat or watercraft that has been made by a factory or company with the purpose of navigating any form of water (lake, river, ocean, pond, river, brook, bathtub, pool).

Participants must be above the waterline. No enclosed tops to the boats. Boats must be kept in the water at all times. Only homemade sails and paddles are allowed. No unsportsmanlike conduct is allowed between boats. Boats must be no wider than 6 feet and must fit under the bridges.

4. Boats must be able to hold at least three people.

5. All people who start the race on the boat must finish the race on the boat.

(A person may fall off and get back on).

6. Must be human powered. No motors.

7. The boat must remain intact from start to finish. A boat that breaks apart during the race will be disqualified.

8. The event will be judged by a combination of audience applause and official judges. Judges’ decisions are final.

9. The start of the race is “green gate.” The end of the race is the “play wave” just upriver from “river-station” take out.

10. All on-river participants must sign a waiver, and wear proper safety gear. A helmet and a life jacket are required, no exceptions.

FREMONT COUNTY SHERIFF RACE CONSEQUENCES

By Bob Dewey For the past year, the Fremont County Sheriff ’s Office (FCSO) has been in turmoil. The present community acceptance of the FCSO is exceptionally low as multiple resignations, suspensions and conflicts within the FCSO are made public.

The newly elected sheriff will be required to fill a leadership void and halt any further personnel defections. The complexity of coordinating both the Law Enforcement and the Detention (Jail) Divisions is tremendous. Presently, there are 94 employees in the FCSO (that is 94 different personalities and relationships). Additionally, there is the responsibility of millions of dollars of equipment and vehicles to be maintained or replaced to keep up with technology. All of this must function together within the FCSO annual multi-million dollar budget.

The qualifications of proven leadership and being fully trained (not requiring extensive on-the job training) are essential qualifications for any elected office being sought. These are required qualifications for the next Fremont County Sheriff. The “Consequences” of requiring “on-the-job” training or a lack of true leadership experience in a newly elected Sheriff will be devastating in the present FCSO environment.

(One cannot fill a void with a void). The one key leadership qualification required of the next Sheriff is Command Experience: Ability to exercise authority and responsibility over a large organization of personnel.

All candidates for Fremont County Sheriff, except one, have only supervised limited personnel throughout their entire law enforcement careers.

The only candidate that has demonstrated proven leadership and Command Experience to fully function immediately when elected Fremont County Sheriff is Canon City Deputy Chief of Police Allen Cooper.

Deputy Chief Allen Cooper has demonstrated his superior qualifications: • Earned promotions (through the ranks) from Officer to Range Officer, SWAT Operator, Patrol Sergeant, SWAT Team Commander, Investigator, Patrol Commander, Commander of Support Services and now Deputy Chief of Police (Command Experience).

• Acting Canon City Chief of Police on two occasions (Command Experience) • Managed a Multi-million Dollar Law Enforcement Budget • Commanded the Fremont County Combined Investigative Response Team • Supervised the (Combined) Internet Crimes Against Children Unit • Commanded the Central Mountain Regional Response Team • Attended and Completed the FBI National Academy • Spokesman for Law Enforcement in the 11th Judicial District • Instrumental in the establishment of the new Child Advocacy Center Allen Cooper’s qualifications for Fremont County Sheriff are far superior over all other candidates. Under Cooper’s leadership, the Canon City Police Department recently attained a “Community Acceptance Rating of 74 percent” (twice the national average). Think what he can do for the Fremont County community as Sheriff ?

By now, we should have received our Primary ballots. You, the voters, are urged to seek the “Truth” surrounding our political candidates and understand the “Consequences” of your vote.
