We have witnessed everything from the satisfaction of eating solid food, and the desire to smile for family photos, to generating confidence to start a small business.” The recipient of the custom denture set will be determined by way of community nomination. Commissioners OKs fire restrictions Carie Canterbury Daily Record

With warmer temperatures and minimal moisture in recent weeks, Sheriff Jim Beicker asked the Fremont County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday to consider imposing fire restrictions within the unincorporated parts of the county. “As you all probably know, surrounding counties imposed restrictions probably long ago,” he said. “We have had some moisture, but it’s going to take a substantial amount to bring us out of any real fire danger.” The board approved Beicker’s recommendation of imposing the lowest level of restrictions. “The restrictions are only applicable in unincorporated Fremont County outside the fire protection district,” Beicker said. “If you live in a fire protection district like Cañon, Penrose, Tallahassee, if they don’t have restrictions, we won’t enforce our ban in those areas.” Stage 1 restrictions prohibit: all agricultural burning; open fires of any type in an undeveloped area; all burning of trash, refuse or other debris; smoking, except within an enclosed area that is hard-surfaced, barren, or otherwise cleared of all flammable vegetation and material; using any explosives materials; outdoor welding, grinding or use of any type of torch in any area which presents the possibility of igniting vegetation or other combustible material, and there must be an adequate water supply and/or fire extinguisher on site; operating any outdoor equipment or machinery in an undeveloped area with an internal combustion engine

without a spark arresting device; and the sale, use and possession of fireworks. Cañon City Fire Chief David DelVecchio said he is assessing conditions, but as of Tuesday afternoon, the department had not gone into restrictions yet. The National Weather Service states severe drought conditions have expanded across south central and southeast Colorado, including southern portions of Fremont County, while moderate drought conditions remain depicted across the rest of the county. Warm and dry conditions across the region during the past several months, combined with abundant cured fuels, has allowed for moderate to high fire danger to develop and persist across much of the area, the NWS states. “Over the past month, occasional windy periods associated with passing weather systems allowed for several wildfires to develop and quickly spread across the area,” the NWS website states. “The warm, dry and windy weather has also prompted area land management agencies to enact new fire restrictions.” Also during Tuesday’s commission meeting, the board approved a service plan for the Arkansas Valley Ambulance District, which is the first step toward the organization moving from a nonprofit entity to a special district. A Petition for Organization then will be filed with the district court requesting an election, which is expected to take place in November. The board also approved and authorized the chairman’s signature on a Natural Resources Conservation Service Damage Survey Report for the Emergency

Commissioner Dwayne McFall said the NRCS has $1.3 million for stream rehabilitation and bank stabilization in the Hayden Pass area, with 25 percent of the matching funds — $452,000 — being

provided by the State Department of Public Safety. “We are trying to save property and life down below that burn scar if we do happen to get any kind of flooding,” he said. Work on this project is expected to begin later this year.

Residents take part in CCHS hair drive By Camie Hall The Daily Record

Cañon City High School sophomore Morgan Richardson joyfully exclaimed, “it’s gone,” on Tuesday as the scissors finally chomped down on 8 inches of her hair. Richardson, along with more than 40 other individuals, donated hair in the CCHS Pride’s fourth annual hair drive and made a difference in the life of a child with medical-related hair loss. Students, staff and community members were invited to participate in the annual event. The drive received help from Toni&Guy students Jordyn Whitney and Kaitlyn Collins, Kreations Salon hairdressers Holly Coleman, Tonya Tenorio and Stephani (Camie Hall / Daily Record) Lopez and 109 Hair Design hairdressers Cañon City High School english teacher Jennifer VanIwarden gets her Andrea Knighton and Misty Heifner and hair cut Tuesday by former CCHS student Jordyn Whitney, a student at stylist Toni Mathews-Ruzanski. the Toni&Guy Hairdressing Academy.

More than half of the donors this year were community members, including Cañon City Councilman John Hamrick, who opted to trade in his ponytail for a fresh summer cut. Participants were required to donate a minimum of 8 inches of hair. With a donation of $5, guys also were able to contribute and get a stylish buzz cut to show support for the cause. Pride coordinator Kevin Marushack is a huge proponent for the success of the hair drive, and he, too, got a trim this year. “I say this all the time, but the hair drive really is my favorite event,” Marushack said. “It’s so neat to see people give so much to a stranger. It’s a big deal for girls, you know? Hair is kind of part of their identity, and then these girls decide to donate and make such a difference. “Plus, this is my pre-summer hair cut,” he jokingly added.

I FOUGHT FOR OUR COUNTRY IN VIETNAM AND I WILL FIGHT FOR YOU

ELECT

SKIP MOREAU FOR YOUR

SHERIFF November 6, 2018 Election

OPERATION CLEAN SWEEP

Fremont County has had 11 or more deputies put on administrative leave. Now we read that a Correction Officer at the

Fremont Correctional Facility was supplying drugs to an inmate, with whom she was, allegedly, romantically involved. She was getting paid for her corruption-- selling drugs in our jail! As far as I am concerned, this individual let down the people she took an oath to protect and serve. I believe that makes her worse than the drug dealers and the criminal element in our community.

It all boils down to poor supervision, lack of leadership, inadequate training, corruption and dishonesty within your Sheriff ’s department.

We have good deputies who love their job and enjoy serving the people. We put our trust into them. When elected as your Sheriff, we will reward those who go above and beyond the call of duty within the department. The bad apples will be removed! I will ensure our deputies get the best training and supervision available to make our Department second to none. I am a Vietnam combat veteran. I bring to your Sheriff ’s office experience and training in law-enforcement, along with a background in management, wildland fire and structure, along with being and emergency medical technician. Most importantly, I will bring ETHICS, INTEGRITY and LEADERSHIP to YOUR Sheriff ’s Office.

I ask that you, the Fremont County voters, to put your trust in me to be your next sheriff. Vote Nov. 6, 2018.

What are the benefits of hospice? While hospice is sometimes provided in nursing homes and hospitals, it can also be provided in the comfort of the patient’s home or in a hospice facility. The focus is on finding a place that is calm, quiet and very different from the typical stressful buzzing of a hospital. Hospice care is a collaborative effort between the patient, the family, the hospice team and the doctor to impart a care regimen that benefits everyone.
