Donna Asher

October 7, 1945 - January 21, 2019

Donna Asher died unexpectedly at home of cardiac arrest with her husband, Jim, at her side. She was a friend to all who knew her, a committed Christian, and a model of kindness and decency for all.

Donna Ray (Thompson) Asher was born to Murval and Emma Thompson in Friend, Nebraska.

She was educated in Friend public schools and graduated from Omaha Business College. She met Jim Asher, the love of her life and husband of 51 years, at a high school prom in Logan, Iowa.

After Jim graduated from the University of South Dakota Pharmacy College, Jim and Donna married and Jim was drafted into the US Army as an enlisted pharmacist. After serving a tour in Germany, where their eldest child, Dawn, was born they returned to Princeton, Illinois, where Jim worked as a Pharmacist. Jim, Donna and Dawn then moved to Canon City, Colorado, where their son, Bryan was born, and where they acquired their first and second pharmacies. Jim and Donna continued their careers, Jim as the owner pharmacist, and Donna as the

accountant, administrator and pharmacy technician. Over the years, their business grew to three pharmacies.

In 2008, Jim and Donna sold their chain of pharmacies and relocated to Glen Allen, Alaska, where Jim served as the community pharmacist.

In 2010 they moved to Eagle River, Alaska, in retirement. Donna was always active in the churches and community service organizations where she lived. She was a valued member of the Eagle River Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Deacon.

Donna is survived by her husband, Jim, daughter, Dawn (Mike) Appleby, son, Bryan (Tammy) Asher, 3 grandchildren, Kirsten Asher, Brandon Asher and Michael Appleby, two great grandchildren, Corey and Brady Appleby and relatives in Nebraska and Iowa.

A funeral service is scheduled for January 31st at 4:00 p.m. at The Eagle River Presbyterian Church, Old Glenn Highway, Eagle River, AK. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Betty Jo Zabrusky

December 25, 1932 ~ January 24, 2019

Betty Jo (Ward) Zabrusky passed away on January 24, 2019, in Cañon City, Colorado at the age of 86.

Betty Jo was a Christmas baby born in Cañon City in 1932 to Harold and Verda (Knight) Ward.

She was a lifelong resident like her father.

She married Bunky Zabrusky on September 9, 1950 in Raton, New Mexico. Betty Jo was a home-maker and avid amateur baker. She helped run Nettie's Candy Shop in Craddock Plaza for several years. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a warm and loving person, whose door was always open, and whose kitchen always contained freshly baked cookies.

She is survived by her children Kathy Humphrey, Kris (Tim) Zabrusky and Ken (Brinda) Zabrusky; grandchildren Michael, Carrie, Scott, and

Kelsey; three greatgrandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many other family members.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Bernard "Bunky" Zabrusky; and sister, Carol Jean Yarberry.

Graveside service, 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 1, 2019 at Lakeside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to a charity of your choice in Betty Jo's name; she loved food and cooking. Food pantries or other community food services are suggested.

The family would also like to especially thank niece Pat McFarland for her loving care of Betty Jo, especially during our difficult time.

Valorie W. Corning

March 16, 1958 - January 23, 2019 Valorie W. Corning (Martin), age 60, died of sudden health problems on January 23, 2019, at home, in Florence, Colorado.

Valorie is survived by her parents, Ron Martin of Florence, CO, and Lanore Hand, of Oberlin, Ks. Val is survived by her husband, Marvin Corning and two daughters: Heather Myers and Charity Esquibel; and two grandchildren: Brooke Myers, and Brett Myers. Val is also survived by three sisters: Debra Hardwick and Vickie Pleake (her twin), Becky Johnston of Silver Hills, Al; and two brothers: Rick Martin of Saco, Me and Tim Martin of Lewiston, Me. Val also has seven

nephews and four nieces.

Val was born on March 16, 1958 in Pueblo, CO. Val's family moved from Pueblo, to Wetmore and finally moved to Florence. Val graduated from Florence High School in 1976.

Val married Marvin Corning December 18, 1976. Val was a house-wife and became a LPN; working in all types of nursing, which she was very passionate about.

Val was active member of the Lincoln Park Church of the Nazarene.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, 10:00am at Lincoln Park Church of the Nazarene with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. Services entrusted to Holt Funeral Home.

Rayona May Haddock

Rayona May (Joanne Fansler) Haddock of Penrose passed away on January 12, 2019 at Parkview Hospital from complications of the flu.

She is survived by her husband, Robert (Bob) Haddock of 21 years; two children, Shadamarie (Kelly) Habash, Shadale Foster; 6 stepchildren, numberous grandchildren and great

grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her father, Carl Fansler; her mother Estella Fansler; her 2 brothers, Randy and Danny Fansler; and son, Shad Aden.

Rayona loved her family very much and enjoyed helping others every chance she got.

Celebration of Rayona's life will be held at a later time.

Scott Allen O'Grady July 18, 1966 - January 3, 2019

Scott Allen O'Grady, 52, of Cañon City, Colorado, passed away unexpectedly on January 3, 2019 in Las Animas, Colorado.

He was born on July 18, 1966 in Corpus Christi, Texas and was raised in Cañon City and attended Cañon City High School. He also lived in Yonkers, New York and Anchorage, Alaska where he loved the outdoors, including fishing, hiking and camping with his family.

Scott was an avid Broncos fan all his life.

Scott also loved all sports and was a fan of all Colorado teams.

He is preceded in death by his mother,

MaryEllen (Bortz) Bueno; stepfather, Harold Bueno; and father, John C. O'Grady.

Scott is survived by his spouse, Carmen Manuli-O'Grady; sons, Anthony Scott and Matthew Joseph O'Grady; his sister, Shannon (Keith) Jilbert; mother-in-law, Juanita Novak; brother-in-law, Joseph Manuli, Jr.; nephew, Joseph Manuli, III; and nieces, Marissa Renee and Brianna Christine Manuli.

A Memorial Service in Cañon City, Colorado will be announced at a later date.

Patricia J. Kennedy

January 6, 1932 ~ January 22, 2019 Patricia J. Kennedy earned her angel wings on January 22, 2019 at the age of 87 after a long battle with dementia. She was born January 6, 1932 and was the first baby of the New Year at that time.

She married Ralph L. Kennedy on December 12, 1950 and they were married until he passed away.

She is survived by her children, Cliff (Anna Marie) Kennedy, of Peoria, Arizona and Lisa Jackson of Pueblo West, Colorado; six grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Sally (Dave) Hyatt of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas, two brothers, David Caligaris of Colorado Springs, Colorado and John (Rory) Caligaris of

Denver, Colorado; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph L. Kennedy; parents, Dominic and Dove Caligaris; in-laws Ralph C. "Heavy" and Eula "JuJu" Kennedy; son-in-law, Leon Jackson; daughter, Christi M. Kennedy; aunt, Rowena Hinshaw; and best friend Patricia Todd.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on February 8, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Lakeside Cemetery, Canon City, Colorado.

Ellen Dorthy Valent

October 31, 1924 ~ January 23, 2019 Ellen Dorthy Valent passed away peacefully January 23, 2019, age 94, in Canon City, Colorado.

Ellen was born October 31, 1924 in Farr Colorado, a coal camp in Huerfano County.

She was the oldest of five children born to James and Catherine (O'Neil) Gregory. She lived her childhood in Ojo, Colorado, helping the family to deal with the many adversities and challenges of the Great Depression.

Despite all these hardships she was raised with the utmost love and care. While in her teens the family moved to Walsenburg.

It was here where she met her future husband "Froggy". She married Michael "Froggy" Valent on October 14, 1943. Together Ellen and Michael created and managed the family business across Colorado and South East Utah called, "Froggy's Poor Boy". A drive in restaurant where, early on, you could get a hamburger and a beer for $.15. It started in Canon City followed by locations in Walsenburg, Durango, Cortez, and Moab, Utah.

They retired in 1963 and settled in Canon City, Colorado. Here they enjoyed gardening, the great Colorado outdoors, and friends.

Ellen was extremely involved with the St. Michael Catholic Church community.

Participating in the prayer group, including

their social activities. She also enjoyed sewing, cooking, canning, and baking, taking her creations to the Fremont County Fair and winning many awards for them. In her later years Ellen enjoyed staying abreast of current events by reading the daily newspapers, and watching the news on T.V. always by her side were her two dogs, Amber and Goofy. She especially liked spending quality time with her granddaughter Valentina, family, and friends.

She is survived by her son, Michael (Tanya) Valent of Canon City, Colorado; granddaughter, Valentina Valent; sister, Shirley Shoskey of Denver, Colorado; along with many nieces and nephews.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents James and Catherine Gregory; husband, Michael "Froggy" Valent; brothers, William "Bill" Gregory, James Gregory; and sister, Frances "Sister" King.

Vigil and Rosary service, 6:00 p.m.

Thursday, February 7, 2019. Memorial Mass, 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 8, 2019 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Reverend Jesse Perez as celebrant.

Linda Lu Newbrough July 24, 1947 ~ January 27, 2019

Linda passed away January 27, 2019 in Canyon City, Colorado.

Linda was 71 years of age.

She worked many years in government administration and then retired in Canyon City, Colorado.

Linda was born July 24, 1947 to Ralph and Clella (Shultz) Newbrough in Perry, Iowa. She graduated high school in Des Moines, Iowa in 1965. After graduation she worked for the State of Iowa. Linda then moved to Denver, Colorado and began working in the federal government, first with the United States Air Force and then later with Social Security office. She retired from the government in 2012.

Linda lived a full and adventurous life. Her passions included listening to Elvis, driving fast in her 1967 GTO, going to amusement parks with fast roller coasters, and trips to Las Vegas. She enjoyed traveling, visiting many places around this world, gardening (especially her roses), and caring for people through

cooking. She was also very active with her church and made sure that the missionaries were always well feed.

Linda was preceded in death by her father Ralph E. Newbrough.

She was survived by her mother Clella Newbrough, close friends Patricia Lewis, Casey Mrsny, and Darren Wilkinson, as well as many others.

A memorial service will be held in Linda's honor at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 1435 Elm Ave, Canon City, Colorado 81212.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her name to the National Kidney Foundation (kidney.org). Linda will be interred at the Woodward Cemetery in Woodward, Iowa next to her father.

City has plan to create more parking for Main Street Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

Parking for business owners, patrons and Main Street residents has been a problem in the downtown area for quite some time, but city officials are making progress in the effort to resolve the issue.

The city purchased the Constantino’s property, located at 110 S. First St., from Gus Pilafas in mid-December for $341,500. Located at the intersection of First Street and U.S. 50, and adjacent from Veterans Park, the property is one of the first things people see when pulling into town from the west.

Mayor Preston Troutman said the city has allowed Pilafas to remain living at the property for six months.

“At that time, we are going to tear it down,” Troutman said. “Right now, it will be used for excess parking. We get full over here (at City Hall) a lot.”

Troutman, members of the Cañon City Council and city administrators met with downtown merchants during a special meeting in August to discuss downtown development and parking issues.

City officials have been looking at potential lots to purchase or lease for additional parking.

“In the short term, the Constantino’s lot will help add additional parking for downtown, overflow parking for events at Veterans Park, and is a logical place for recreational vehicles to park and allow visitors to spend some time in our community,” said Ryan Stevens, Cañon City’s Economic Development director.

New ‘Manage Your Money’ workshops

Carie Canterbury / Daily Record As part of Cañon Exploratory School student Lorelai VanIwarden’s second quarter personal exploration project, she has arranged to bring Face Vocal Band to the community Tuesday to conduct workshops for CCHS Encore! and CES students and to perform a fundraising concert for CES.

Central Colorado Housing, a department of the Upper Arkansas Area Council of Governments, is offering two new rounds of their Manage Your Money workshops.

The first one will start March 7. The four week series will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m. at UAACOG. The second round will begin April 11 and be from 6 to 8 p.m., also at UAACOG. The cost of the workshops is $40 per household and scholarships are available.

Scholarship applications can be picked up at the CCH office at 3224-A Independence Road, Cañon City. The deadline to register for the workshops and/or submit a scholarship application is 4:30 p.m. Feb. 28.

The workshops will cover everything from understanding your current situation, budgeting and credit, to planning for the future. The overall goal of the workshops is to help attendees learn skills for a healthy financial future and have the tools to cope with difficult financial times.

All workshops will be in the UAACOG Conference Room at 3224-A Independence Road and are open to the public. Youth ages 12 to 17 are welcome to attend with an adult. Reservations are required for the workshop and space is limited.

Here Are The Questions Black Hills Energy: Why are you so obsessed in placing a high voltage electrical substation at the corner of Highway 115 and K St. in Penrose?

That is the gateway to the Arkansas Valley and should NOT be marred by transformers and numerous transmission lines crossing both K St. and Highway 115 with this substation.

Is it because you plan to run a second transmission line through Penrose in your 10 year plan?

You are aware that just to run one line through Penrose you will destroy the integrity of hundreds of residences and cost the property owners million of dollars. Think how that will affect the future County tax revenue.

What is it going to take for you to go back to the drawing board and develop a sensible route with community input?

We as stakeholders in Black Hills Energy, and ultimately the ones paying for this line, in addition to the highest rates in the state, deserve an answer. Please be upfront and honest with NO rhetoric.
