Susan Spriggs blooms color all over town
calls her “encore career” was nominated by her co-workers, Casey Brown and Marci Machuga.
By Christy Fantz fantzc@dailycamera com
After seeking out advice, Broomfield Days Parade Grand Marshal Susan Spriggs figured she’d better follow orders
“When I met with Kim Evelsizer, the parade coordinator, she said that my biggest duty was to practice my wave,” Spriggs said, via email “Believe me, I have been practicing!”
Spriggs, who had an entire career at the Colorado Department of Revenue before joining the Broomfield Workforce Center as a parttime employee a position she
“The nominations were posted online and anyone could vote for the person they thought should be the Grand Marshal,” Spriggs said. “Never imagining in a million years that I would actually be selected, I posted the information on my Facebook page. Several of my friends shared the information, and all of a sudden here I am … the Grand Marshal.”
An honor she never expected
According to Brown and Machuga’s nomination: “Her color-coordinated outfit and signature flower in her hair bring brightness to the (Broomfield Workforce) Center every day. For many people who come through the door, it can be a challenging time as they are out of work and seeking support to find

employment again. Sue has a way of encouraging them and building them up to be successful in what they do She not only ensures their employment needs are met but also gets to know them on a personal level to make them feel valued and supported ”
Spriggs said she was grateful and humbled when she got the notice saying she’d been named Grand Marshal.
“I am so honored!” Spriggs said. “There were several nominees that I felt were far more deserving than me.”
Many of her friends, family, neighbors, co-workers and probably more than a few of the people she’s helped during her career must have disagreed, because after less than five years with the Workforce Center she’s already made an impact and that’s while only working there part time.
Military Appreciation Month
One of the projects Spriggs has been involved in since its inception is Broomfield’s Military Appreciation Month Spriggs father was a World War II veteran and her brothers went to the Air Force Academy. She has a number of other close friends and family who all serve or served in the armed forces as well.
So when she was asked to come up with some ideas to further reach out to military veterans looking for jobs, Spriggs dug in and went to work.
“I wrote a communication plan that outlined some ideas to engage with veterans in the Broomfield area,” Spriggs said. “One of my ideas was to dedicate a month where the Workforce Center would have veteran-focused events.”
Spriggs said she did so before realizing May is nationally recognized as Military Appreciation Month So, in April of last year, the City and County of Broomfield proclaimed May 2022 as Broomfield’s first Military Appreciation Month, honoring vets and their families with events and workshops. Some of those include:
• A job fair that highlights veteran-owned businesses and businesses that prioritize hiring veterans
SUSAN
has been practicing her wave ahead of acting as the Parade Grand Marshall for Broomfield Days Broomfield residents can thank Spriggs for her work in getting the city to tag the month of May as Military Appreciation Month
• A luncheon in collaboration with the Broomfield Senior Services team to honor veterans, military families and Broomfield employees who are also veterans
• An appreciation event with the Broomfield Veterans Museum to thank Broomfield Veterans and showcase local resources for veterans and military families
• Ending the month with the Memorial Day Celebration and Picnic organized by members of the Broomfield Library and Cultural Affairs team and the Broomfield Veterans Museum
Broomfield Workforce Center
Outside of the military aspect, Spriggs is proud of the work she and the team at Broomfield Workforce Center have done.
“I could tell you many stories about how I have seen lives changed for the people that work with the amazing workforce specialists at the Workforce Center,” Spriggs said “Having a job is so much more than just earning a paycheck It brings a sense of purpose and the feeling that you are contributing to something bigger than yourself.
“Being unemployed is scary for most and always a time of uncertainty. The team at the Workforce Center not only offers resources

Gear up for adorable overload
By Ross Maak For the Enterprise
The kid clown contest is a staple dating back to the early days of Broomfield Days Children between the ages of 1 to 9 years old are encouraged to dress up and, well, basically be as adorable as possible.
Much like so many other traditions and events, the COVID-19 pandemic caused organizers to hit the pause button for a couple of years. But the opportunity to show off your child’s inner (and outer) clown skills is back.
Little clown Jace participated in the Broomfield Days Clown Contest in 2021 The local Optimist Club is continuing its 42-year tradition of hosting the contest, which will hit the stage at 8a.m Sept 23during Broomfield Days at Midway Park
“Each contestant will perform a one- to two-minute skit, tell a joke, sing a song, do a dance, do a short act and, of course, the younger ones have mom or dad hold the mic and help them do something cute,” said event organizer Debbie

Cooper-George, in an email. “We’ll have six judges that are teachers from Bal Swan Children’s Center that volunteer their time.
“They also have a heart for what Marlene Politzer had done for the community and the school ”
Politzer started the contest 42 years ago She was a member of the Optimist Club, was largely responsible for developing the curriculum during her tenure at Bal Swan and, if that wasn’t enough, she went to clown school and loved to dress up as a clown.
“She served the greater Broomfield Community in many ways as a member of several organizations, volunteering her time to its improvement and whenever possible focusing on its children,” said Jim Figg, who helped start Broomfield Days. “It was only appropriate that when Marlene passed, the Optimist Clown Contest was permanently dedicated in her memory in honor of her indomitable and loving spirit
and her legacy of treating every single child as special.”

The big parade
Besides practicing her wave, Spriggs is looking forward to showing off her balancing skills riding in the back of a convertible. She and her husband, Ron, own the Mustang that Ron plans to drive in the parade with Spriggs and her daughter, Alexis, as passengers.
“Broomfield Days is so much fun every year,” Spriggs said. “I also have several friends from college (Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri) flying in to enjoy Broomfield Days and join me at the parade We will also be joined by some of my friends from Longmont High School and friends from my previous jobs, both at Boulder County Clerk and Recorder’s Office and the Colorado Department of Revenue.”

As for bikes, McDaniel said Trek Bicycle Broomfield will be bringing e-bikes and will set up an area for test rides. Representatives will also be available to answer questions and provide information about rebates.
Both of these events are scheduled to start around noon.
“Transitioning away from internal combustion vehicles is fundamental to reaching Broomfield’s greenhouse gas reduction goals, and we hope Broomfield residents take advantage of this opportunity to learn about these new technologies,” McDaniel said.
recognize Spriggs as the Grand Marshal, another way to identify her is the signature flower in her hair or even passing out flowers for everyone else.
“When I worked at the Department of Revenue, I was heavily involved in the legislative process,” Spriggs said. “Many times I felt the stress the legislative session can bring. I decided to start wearing flowers in my hair, just to bring some color to the Capitol and hopefully a smile or two. I have worn a flower in my hair almost every day since fall of 2007.”
Spriggs said there’s been a couple of times during that timeframe when she’s gone out without a flower and her friends have asked if everything is okay
“My friends and I will be handing out hair flowers at the parade and throughout the Broomfield Days events,” Spriggs said “I’m anxious to see how many people we can get to wear hair flowers at one time maybe a new Guinness World Record? I have been told that people around Broomfield refer to me as ‘the Flower Lady.’”
“That’s just fine with me because I truly believe that life is more fun with flowers in your hair!”
