Jay Willey, 83, has spent more than 50 years working with others in the Broomfield community

Jay Willey, 83, has been selected as the 2022Broomfield Days Parade grand marshal. The parade will be held Saturday morning.
Willey’s history in Broomfield in-
Willey, 83, works as a trainer specializing in rehabilitation at the Paul Derda Recreation Center in Broomfield. He has worked a few jobs in the community in his 53 years in Broomfield, all focused largely on helping others, but he said training and rehabilitation is his passion, and he has no plans to give it up anytime soon. He still completes about 35 training sessions per week with his clients, he said.

From low-key to the spotlight for long-time helper
Jay Willey, although a wellknown community member, likes to remain low-key in his day-to-day life. But he will be given a few minutes of fame as the 2022 Broomfield Days Parade grand marshal.
“I often get retirement questions, but I think retirement is doing something you love and that’s what I’m already doing,” Willey said. “As long as I can help people that’s what I’m going to keep doing.”Willey said he had no knowledge of his nomination to be the grand marshal, he laughed. One participant in a class asked to make an announcement at the end of the class and told everyone they should go online and vote for Willey, and this was the first he heard of the nomination.“Thosecharacters I work with at the rec center put me up to this,” Willey said. “I told them after I found out they are always trying to find a way to blow my cover.”

“We are excited to have Jay Willey as the grand marshal of the event this year,” Recreation Superintendent Matthew Gulley said. “I personally have been working with Jay for close to 19 years within the recreation department and have the utmost respect for who he is and what he means to the community.”For more information about the parade, visit broomfield.org/604/ parade.
In the announcement online, the city said that Willey has trained about “every demographic in the Broomfield community to lead healthy, productive and more enjoyable lives.”

“I’ve worked with the people of Broomfield in a lot of different ways,” Willey said. “I’ve gotten to know so many people in the community and that’s partly why I keep going. I don’t know anything else.”
Willey made sure to note that his wife of 59 years will be riding alongside him in the parade.
might not be able to do it,” Willey laughed.Asthe grand marshal, Willey will ride in one of the first cars in the parade and get a special view of everything from the main stage, but if you’re looking for him afterwards, the information booth might be a good place to start.
Willey is no stranger to Broomfield Days, but he said, although he is grateful to be chosen, he hopes he is allowed to resume his normal position at the information booth after all the fun is over.

Looking to build upon the momentum created prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Broomfield Days is back in full swing this year with close to 250 vendors and all the fanfavorite activities.
“In 2019, we had expanded our vendors to near capacity for the event, and, unfortunately, after one year without the event, when we brought it back last year it was with fewer vendors and activities,” Recreation Superintendent Matthew Gulley said.

Following the momentum built prior to the pandemic, Broomfield Days is back in full swing this go-around
Almost back to a full slate, vendors this year will include a mix of city-handled booths, such as nonprofit organizations, food and activity vendors, arts and crafts, and local businesses to promote their companies through the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce Broomfield Days Trade Fair.
Beginning Friday, Broomfield Days will kick off with the annual golf tournament sponsored by Senior Resources of Broomfield and bingo with the Broomfield Lions Club.Saturday will bring many of the well-known activities, including the Broomfield Lions Club pancake breakfast, the Broomfield Days Parade, a 5K race, canine

“Broomfield Days is the largest
community event that Broomfield puts on,” Gulley said. “This event embodies the small-town charm that Broomfield still has. It is a truly one-of-a-kind event that brings all parts of the community together in a celebration that I have not seen in other places. I am somewhat jaded as I have been part of the planning for this event for 15 plus years now, but I can honestly say that there is nothing more gratifying than seeing all of the Broomfield residents out and about mingling and enjoying what is almost always a beautiful and enjoyable day.”
