Winner draws on vivid skies

A few years ago Broomfield artist Kim Touysinhthiphonexay captured a sunset from Outlook Trail, which would later serve as inspiration for this year’s Broomfield Days Poster. “I noticed the great sunset from my house and was headed to the Ruth Roberts Open Space overlook to take pictures, but saw the sky and took this picture before I event got there,” Touysinhthiphonexay said. “In a way, it is representative of what anyone can see anywhere in Broomfield.” Touysinhthiphonexay and the three other artists who submitted artwork for this year’s poster contest gathered one evening in July at a reception hosted by the Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities. Artists could meet with the public and discuss their art, which was hung up at the Brunner Farmhouse, 640 Main Street, and later was moved to the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library, 3 Community Park Road. Touysinhthiphonexay said she has always loved this photo and thought it would be a great concept because, while Broomfield sees so many “beautiful, vivid sunsets” the Broomfield Days event hasn’t had one depicted in a poster recently. “It definitely was a challenge to paint this scene, but I thought it would be fun to do something different and create a permanent momento of a beautiful sunset that everyone could enjoy.

Sherill Bunetta, BCAH president and treasurer, said people can start reserving posters now. Whatever is not sold before Broomfield Days will be available for purchase at the event. Posters are $25. BCAH prints 50 copies each year, which are numbered and signed by the artist. Posters from previous Broomfield Days

still are available for $15. Money raised goes to the organization’s fund to help offset the cost of printing, hosting the reception and the first and second prizes of $100 and $50. This year second place was Cami Rigorozzi, whose painting was of three classic cars. Artists submit a $10 application fee, if they are BCAH members, or $15 when they enter a piece of artwork for consideration.
“It’s not considered a fundraiser,” Bunnetta said about the costs. “It’s a tradition for Broomfield.” BCAH has been holding the contest since 2009, she said. The organization asks for a 16x20 inch picture submission. Artists felt it was too restrictive to have a theme, so images vary from artist to artist. This year they had four entries See WINNER on 22

Everyone loves a parade Staff Report
Whether they go for the marching bands, dancers, horses, school groups, floats or free candy, crowds of kids and kids-at-heart are known to fill the sidewalks of Midway Boulevard long before the annual Broomfield Days Parade begins its procession. The Broomfield Community Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at Main and Midway Boulevard, and will arrive at Midway Park at 10 a.m. The parade always draws a large contingent of floats, bands and more. Entries will be judged in six categories: Decorated floats, car and cycles clubs, school spirit, multicultural, marching groups and marching bands. Also featured in the parade will be Jim and Jan Sparks, this year’s Parade Grand Marshals. They will ride in a vehicle supplied by Sill-TerHar Motors. Both are previous Heart of Broomfield award winners. Jim Sparks was selected for the most recent Heart of Broomfield
Senior Award, in part because of his love of woodworking artistry that he has shared across Broomfield. He has donated pieces for fundraising events that benefit Meals on Wheels, the Senior Gala and Basket Auction the board hosts. He and Jan are members of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, an organization that has also benefited from his woodworking pieces. Sparks always is willing to help with special projects around the church that require attention to detail and fine craftsmanship, Holy Comforter Rector Kim Seidman has said, and he has made countless pieces for the church’s children Montessori Bible lessons. Sparks was a critical member of the team that constructed the first set of exhibit cabinets that formed the basis of opening the veterans museum, and which are still in use. Senior Resources of Broomfield again is hosting a street dance Friday night at Broomfield Days. The dance returned last year to Midway Park after a several-year hiatus. “It was just a great connection to the community,” Councilwoman Kimberly Groom said last year. “Pretty much everybody in Broomfield came to the street dance and we had a lot of fun.” Kimberly Groom Groom serves on the Senior Resource Board and helped with the return of the dance. “We used to have amazing attendance,” she said. For the last few years of the dance,
which Groom said ranged from the 1980s to 1990s, it was held at the Broomfield High School stadium to control entrances and corral the crowd. “I believe it became just too much logistically to handle, and we did away with it,” she explained last year.
There had been talk for years of bringing it back, she said, and when Senior Resources decided in 2017 to discontinue its annual gala, she jumped on the opportunity to host the dance. When she was campaigning for council for her first term, Groom said a number of people suggested bringing it back.
Through talks with the senior board and with city officials, it came together in a matter of months. The dance this year is from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday night. Music for the evening will be School of Rock and Thumpin’. This year, there is no charge, but donations are happily accepted for the Senior Resources. Food and drinks at the dance will be provided by food trucks and several local microbreweries — and a booth where people can buy Coors and Budlight. “We’re bringing it back even with the classic beer,” Groom said. All ages are welcome, but organizers ask that pets are left at home. Buying a ticket online ahead of time comes with a free drink ticket. Do pancakes taste better when served better outdoors among hundreds of your closest friends? If turnout at the Lions Club’s annual pancake breakfast can serve as an unspoken answer, then yes, they do. Crowds always are in abundance for the flapjacks, eggs, sausage, juice and milk dished out by club members. Over the years, the number of hot cakes served by the Lions total up to thousands. And they hope to add to that total this year. The Lions will be back at the griddles on Saturday at the Girl Scout Shelter at Midway Park. The feast runs from 7 to 10 a.m. The cost is $8 for ages 13 and up; and $5 for kids 6 to 12. Those age 5 and younger are free. Proceeds go to Lions’ programs that benefit the community. The Lions also sponsor Club Bingo at the Girl Scout Shelter at 7 p.m.

Broomfield kids pull out all the stops to create their costumes for the annual Optimist Club Clown Contest. The contest starts at 8 a.m. on the main stage in Midway Park (east of North Metro Fire Rescue District Station 61). Kids bedecked in fluffy wigs, floppy shoes and colorful noses need to arrive no later that 7:45 a.m. — registration begins at 7:15 a.m. After the judging, all of the contestants can pile on the Optimist Club’s parade float, so the whole town can see their clown costume creativity. High-stakes prizes are awarded to the winners. Years past have included bicycles and giant stuffed animals. No preregistration is required, but a parent or guardian must be present for registration. Dogs of all sorts can party in the park this weekend, too. The best-dressed dog show is back for another round of canine fun and celebration. The pup-friendly area will be in south Midway Park near the detention pond. It will feature dog-centric vendors, pet adoption and the fabulous leaping dock as dogs show off in the giant pool. And, be on the lookout for super heroes, princesses and characters of the canine variety when dogs of all sorts vie for the Best-Dressed Dog Contest on the demonstration stage at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Some do elaborate tricks, too. At stake are prizes from dog-related businesses in the area. The contest features large- and small-breed divisions. Expect about 50 dogs and hundreds of onlookers. The contest is judged by the audience, which votes for favorites via hoots, hollers and claps. A panel of official judges is charged with gauging which of the dogs has the most applause. Once a victor is chosen in each division , they square off in a

but people are invited to bring blankets or chairs. T Ben Vagher, president of the Senior Resources Board, said the organization was created in 1982 as a nonprofit. It actively supports programs such as Meals on Wheels, a medical equipment loan closet, the handyman/chore program, a caregiver respite program and special medical and dental needs programs. The board will hold three Broomfield Days events within 24 hours starting with the Broomfield Days Open golf tournament Friday at Eagle Trace Golf Club.
The dance will follow that evening, and the 17th Annual Rockin’ Cool Classic Car Show will take place Saturday morning. The car show, which also benefits Broomfield Senior Resource programs and services, asks for a $25 donation to preregister a vehicle or a $30 donation the day of the show. Preregistered vehicles will get five additional raffle tickets for early registration. Each registration comes with a goodie bag, show T-shirt, dash plaque and one raffle ticket. All vehicles must be parked by 9:30 a.m., as the roads will close then for the parade.

She said she feels that art brings a wonderful balance to her life and looks forward to finding more ways to share both her art and the joy of creating art with others. “There were four beautiful pieces submitted for the poster contest, all very different, but all very Broomfield,” she said. “I am very honored to have my painting selected for the poster and very excited to think that many thousands of people will be able to see and enjoy my artwork.
