Growing from 24 charter members in April 1919 to more than 230 members a century later, the Boulder Rotary Club has remained relevant to its members and the community through the past, the present and into the future.

n April 1, 1919, just after World War I, Boulder was a pretty, but sleepy little town. There was no paved road to Denver. The University of Colorado consisted of a few nondescript buildings on the Hill and everyone in town knew each other. The downtown business district of a few square blocks was plagued with flies. With Boulder’s unpaved, horse-traveled dirt roads, these flying pests worried local residents. Having survived the major 1918 influenza epidemic, the concern about health and sanitation remained high. One of Boulder Rotary’s Charter members, Hugh Mark, General Manager of Hotel Boulderado, made a motion to get behind the “anti-fly campaign.”

Boulder Rotary’s first service project provided a solution to the concern of the time with fly traps placed at the front and rear of each business.

Spanning 100 years from April 1, 1919 to today, Boulder Rotary has thrived as a cornerstone service organization within the fabric of Boulder’s progressive community.

It has attracted business and nonprofit professionals, educators and leaders who are inspired by Rotary’s motto of “service above self.”

four businessmen, now more than 230 active members seek shared interest in Boulder Rotary’s mission to unite leaders, exchange ideas and take action. Welcoming men and women across a range professions, positions and ages, members join and participate in Rotary to collaborate with like-minded people to bring tangible, impactful results and enjoy fellowship and fun at weekly meetings and a variety of social events. Sizeable in membership, Boulder Rotary provides opportunities for members to connect in smaller groups. With over 60 committees ranging in interest and expertise, Rotarians have ample opportunities to champion causes most important to them and drive real results.

While much has changed in the Boulder community over the past 100 years, the club’s continued focus on hands-on service work began decades ago, and has since provided a strong foundation for present and future projects to build upon. The impetus of most Boulder Rotary Club projects parallel Rotary’s six areas of focus: peace and conflict resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economic and community development.

In this centennial year,

Boulder Rotary has celebrated its accomplishments across these areas with a common thread among its expansive project list: sustainability.

Building and funding sustainable projects has enabled generations to benefit from Boulder Rotary’s good works. So far, more than $100,000 has been raised to fund centennial projects in the Boulder community.

HEALTH, DISEASE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT Rotarians around the world continue to bring positive change as a result of their shared concern for health, environment and peace building. A current focus of Rotary International and Boulder Rotary Club remains the eradication of polio. While no longer a health concern in America, polio remains in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. Over the years, Boulder Rotary Club members have contributed nearly $226,000 to the Polio Plus campaign to eradicate this disabling disease by improving immunization coverage through access to life-saving vaccines.

With the growing opioid epidemic in Boulder County, the club organized a medication take back event in collaboration with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Department inviting members to properly dispose of expired and DAILY CAMERA

environment within Boulder, residents and visitors have benefitted from Rotarian actions taken years ago. In 1921, a bond issue of $50,000 to repair the aging Broadway Bridge required city approval through a special election. Rotarians, seeing the clear need and the hesitation of the city to move forward, canvassed their neighborhoods encouraging community members to vote in favor of the bond. Their efforts resulted in the approval of the bond and even today, travel on Broadway is eased by their work decades ago.

EDUCATION

Boulder Rotary seeks to ensure that youth in need have access to basic educational supplies. Since 2006, Rotary’s “Crayons to Calculators” program has provided backpacks filled with supplies for K-12 students in Boulder Valley and St. Vrain schools. Last summer, Rotarians and community volunteers personally stuffed 11,000 backpacks with essential tools to help students succeed at the start of their new school year.

With concerns around opioid addiction and suicide, Boulder Rotarians have formed a Behavioral Wellness Initiative Committee that champions club programs and a series of educational lectures in collaboration with Mental Health Partners, Boulder Community Health and Boulder Valley Rotary Club to make information more accessible to community members.

PRESERVE PLANET EARTH Boulder Rotary’s interest in preserving its parks and natural beauty has a long history. In the 1930s, a local cutlery businessman and Boulder Rotary Club president, Harlow Platts, served his community for 31 years on the City Parks and Planning Commission.

In his honor, the park located at Viele Lake now retains his name – Harlow Platts Park. A fitness course sponsored by Boulder Rotary at the lake is a reminder of his passion for health and wellbeing.

Boulder Rotarians have upheld Platts’s interest in fitness and the environment through the Preserve Planet Earth (PPE) Committee which has championed cleaning up

creeks and parks. After the 2013 floods, members held a work day at Cal-Wood, the Jamestown area camp and education center, by moving trees, helping with creek bed cleanup and restoration.

This April, Boulder Rotarians will return to Harlow Platts Park as one of several projects planned in honor of the centennial year.

In collaboration with the City of Boulder’s Community Partnerships and Outreach Department, Rotarians will plant seven new large trees in addition to canvassing the neighborhood to educate residents on Emerald Ash Borer, planting new trees and taking care of the trees they have.

Continuing focus on the local

In this notable university town, Boulder Rotary advances its support of education by raising valuable dollars to fund resident scholarships awarded annually to up to 30 graduates of Boulder County high schools attending college in Colorado. Since 2015, Boulder Rotary has awarded $84,200 in scholarships with $27,500 awarded in 2019.

The Study Abroad and Youth Exchange programs are emblematic of Rotary International’s focus on global cooperation and awareness.

When people are exposed to different societies, they begin to understand and appreciate the values of different cultures, a powerful way to advance peace and harmony in the world. Boulder Rotary’s Study Abroad Committee has distributed an estimated $150,000 over the past 15 years to support top CU and Naropa University students who needed assistance funding their educational experience in a foreign country.

to college students and develops the process for admissibility. These scholarship recipients are positive ambassadors for our country and for Rotary and return to Boulder with a new perspective on society and have a greater appreciation for global awareness.

In the same spirit as the Study Abroad program, Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) gives high school students the opportunity to learn a new language, discover another culture and truly become global citizens. Boulder high school students are given the opportunity to travel to countries from Belgium to Brazil where they stay with a host family and experience their culture and life firsthand. In return, students from abroad are hosted in Boulder for approximately three months at the homes of Rotarians, providing opportunities for cultural learning for all involved.

Beyond funding a variety of scholarships, Boulder Rotary seeks to ensure that youth in need have access to basic educational supplies.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Several other areas of local need have captured the interest of Boulder Rotarians through the years including housing and meals.

Realizing the importance of “giving a hand up,” for years members participated in Boulder Flatirons Habitat for Humanity Build Days.

Over the years, members have driven local routes providing Meals

on Wheels to area shut-ins. Drivers and recipients connected in this manner through an intergenerational opportunity for fellowship.

More recently, you’ll find Boulder Rotarians participating in the local United Way “Day of Caring” providing another opportunity for hands-on community service.

Members join other community volunteers for a day working together on activities such as sorting clothing, stocking food pantry

shelves, picking up trash, pulling weeds, and planting flowers.

Perhaps one of the most renowned qualities of Rotarians is their ability to advocate for peace. Through the club’s Peace Committee, the international focus has transcended into a third centennial project, an International Peace Garden: celebrating a culture of peace, sustainability and community.

Partnering with the City of Boulder, the enhanced Peace Park at the Civic Center will include a Walk of Infinite Peace. Club members selected peace quotations to be inscribed throughout the enhanced walk as an important reminder of how our thoughts and actions can instill peace on a daily basis.

The Rotarians of today have built upon the foundation of fellow Rotarians using “service above self” as their North Star. By assessing local issues and taking action, the Boulder Rotary Club has remained relevant for 100 years with plans underway to continue the legacy in Boulder for the next century.

Boulder Rotary honors its 100 years with $100,000 gift to the Boulder community

T

o honor Boulder Rotary’s historic centennial year, the club set out to raise $100,000 to fund several centennial projects to benefit the Boulder community.

Each project touches on a focus area of Boulder Rotary, from behavioral wellness to clean water, peace building and environmental sustainability.

Visitors to the new Della Cava Pavilion at Boulder Community Health (BCH), will soon experience a Mindfulness Path created with a $50,000 contribution from Boulder Rotary. Opening in the summer, the Mindfulness Path will be located within the Foundry Garden in a courtyard just outside of the Della Cava Pavilion. The path will feature six curved stone

benches along the garden path, with quotes selected by Boulder Rotarians chiseled into each one to encourage mindfulness practice.

This emphasis on mindfulness was chosen because mental health professionals increasingly see the benefit of mindfulness to enhance overall wellbeing.

A second gift of $30,000 to the Boulder community, an “International Peace Garden: celebrating a culture of peace, sustainability and community,” includes enhancements to the newly redesigned Peace Park at Civic Center Park near the Boulder Public Library. Boulder Rotary’s vision is to enhance the current Peace Park by creating an environment that promotes a culture of peace and sustainability, cultivates personal emotional awareness and builds

bridges across communities. Visitors will be guided around a Walk of Infinite Peace with peace inscriptions embossed in stone benches, peace poles featuring sayings of peace and representing Boulder's Sister Cities. Newly planted cherry trees aim to symbolize good fortune, new beginnings and revival.

A third centennial project promotes the use of refillable water bottles and makes water more accessible to those enjoying outdoor recreation throughout Boulder.

Hydration stations will be installed at the East Boulder Recreation Center, the Boulder Creek Path near 17th Street and near the playground next to the Library.

In support of environmental sustainability, the Club will plant seven large trees in Harlow Platts Park on April 27.

With a $50,000 donation from Boulder Rotary, visitors will soon enjoy the Boulder Rotary Mindfulness Path located just outside the new Della Cava Pavilion at Boulder Community Health (BCH).

Since the club exceeded its fundraising goal, funds in excess of the $100,000 goal will be held in a Centennial Fund by the Boulder Rotary Club Foundation and will be used to support future projects as the club enters its next century of service.

Why Rotary? Membership that matters

n February 23, 1905, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, Hiram E. Shorey, and Paul P. Harris gathered in Loehr’s office in Chicago for what was to become the very first Rotary meeting. This was the beginning of an idea that grew into one of the most powerful and effective international service organizations.

Today, Rotary unites more than a million people across the globe.

There are an estimated 1.2 million Rotary members and 35,000 Rotary clubs throughout 200 countries and geographical areas.

Boulder Rotary, one of the largest service clubs in Colorado, is respected for its diverse membership, including professionals from an expansive list of occupations including doctors, attorneys, entrepreneurs,

scientists, engineers, church leaders, professors, deans, company presidents, nonprofit leaders, community volunteers, and more.

One important quality these leaders possess is the positive, solution-oriented mind-set that says, “we can do it.” When a club project begins, the individual skills and talents each member brings to the table – from strategic planning, creative input to fund raising – combine to produce meaningful results. The action-oriented nature of Boulder Rotary membership creates a space where members feel their actions are making a direct impact, all while enjoying teamwork and progress toward a common goal.

“This is not your father’s Rotary Club” claims Lindsey Sachs. Sachs, who joined Boulder Rotary in January of 2017, was a charter member of one of the first “new generation” Rotary Clubs in America, in Bloomington, MN, before moving to Boulder with her husband, Chris, in 2015. While the average age of Rotarians is known to be more mature, likely due to financial capacity and time to volunteer, Boulder Rotary continues to attract young professionals who are eager to join forces with others to contribute and get their hands dirty while making a difference.

“As a young professional, I find Rotary to be an anchor in my life, providing global insights and introspection into issues facing our local community,” says Sachs.

“Through Rotary, I feel more deeply connected to a bigger picture in life and how I can use my time, talent and efforts in Rotary to exponentially make an impact. Since joining, I’ve met many other young women turning to Rotary for many of the same reasons. And now, as a new mom, I look forward to sharing this experience with my five-month old, Sienna.”

Sachs and fellow Rotarian Kelly Child, also a new mom of daughter Eleanor (three months), represent the future generation of Rotary. The

input of all ages among Boulder Rotary membership strengthens the importance and effectiveness of what Rotary develops and accomplishes.

n a cultured town where many people travel the world, it’s no surprise that Boulder Rotary has accomplished many international service projects. Those looking to dedicate their time to international service find Boulder Rotary to be a formidable outlet for bringing sustainable solutions to communities in countries such as Peru, Nicaragua and Kenya.

Visionaria, founded in August 2016, came from the vision of young Rotarians in the Boulder New Generations Rotary Club (BNGRC).

The club wanted to empower the young, indigenous Andean women of Peru to work toward social and environmental change in their communities.

help their families and communities, such as installing cleaner cookstoves, water filters and solar lanterns, and supporting high school students in leadership training.

“The program helped me a lot because I had visions and goals, but I did not feel capable in making decisions,” said one woman in an assessment. “Now I am capable of making decisions and taking risks for my life.”

Visionaria Peru is now a standalone 501(c)(3) nonprofit working with 700 students on team projects to tackle problems such as discrimination, corruption, teen pregnancy, abuse and deforestation.

Through a Rotary Global Grant in 2018-19, Visionaria Peru is training 30 teachers from 20 different secondary schools in Anta, Peru, who will support students in the Visionaria program.

NICARAGUA In the Nicaraguan town of Los Cerritos, women and children had to walk a long distance or ride on horseback to get clean water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and washing clothes. The communities of Chaguatillo and Masaguito lacked adequate sanitation facilities.

Partnering with El Porvenir, an international nonprofit organization, Boulder Rotary project champions Norris Hermsmeyer, Jon Kottke, and Lenna Kottke worked from 2012 to 2014 to fund construction of a spring capture gravity flow water system and pit latrines to serve nearly 600 residents. Community health/hygiene education workshops and the promotion of reforestation in micro watersheds were also part of the project.

In 2014, when the project was finished, the community insisted that Jon and Lenna return for the celebration. As Lenna described it, there was dancing, singing, balloons, and skits. The fun reinforced friendship and commitment, the personal one-on-one relationships that Rotary values.

KENYA While most tourists travel to Kenya to see the wildlife, “The real beauty is in the children, their smiles and the hope they hold for the future,” said Rotarian Darryl Brown. Brown discovered a great need within Kisumu, Kenya after a family visit in 2008-2009 when his family visited Kenya’s third-largest city, a port on Lake Victoria.

the poverty. The school had no classrooms, no books, and no food for the students. The many orphans in the town couldn’t go to school because they had to scavenge for food during the day.

On his return, Darryl started the Rabour School Feeding Project.

Boulder Rotary raised $14,000, which was used to buy 500 chicks, nine goats and a local porridge-flour mill, all of which created a stream of food for the orphans and kept them in school. The work has expanded to address sustainable projects based on what the people of Kisumu have voiced as needed.

Darryl worked with Boulder to establish a Sister City relationship with Kisumu that was approved in 2009. School buildings and sanitation facilities have also been built in Rabour, and a water, health, and sanitation project in Kisumu was funded by a $7.5 million grant

Additionally, the club supports a women’s empowerment group where a widows’ group works collaboratively with each other on sewing, farming and health projects, before and after school programs to supply small neighborhood libraries with books, and a sustainable charcoal program that funds a youth soccer club for boys who would otherwise be unsupervised with no organized activities. Rotary Youth Exchange: A bus ride they’ll never forget

Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) student from Zagreb, Croatia, Dora Bacurin, soaks in the natural beauty and makes lifelong friendships during her year in Colorado.

here’s no better way to support global understanding than to open your doors to the world – in some ways, almost literally. That’s exactly what future Rotarian John Regur did in the fall of 2014, when current Rotarians Nancy Stocker and Chad Stamm arrived to interview John’s daughter, Aimee.

Aimee had heard about the Rotary Youth Exchange program, and she saw it as a way to launch herself into the future she always imagined – one filled with foreign lands, new languages, amazing people and a global perspective.

They all sat across a long wooden table in the dining room and discussed what it would be like – both the festivities and failures

– that a year abroad can bring.

Aimee aced her interviews with the Boulder Rotary Club and was recommended for the district level interviews, which ultimately determine if and where a student is placed. In her case, Aimee was selected to go to Croatia, and she almost immediately began studying the Croatian language in preparation for her year in Zagreb.

Just as Aimee and more than 20 other Colorado high school students were sent to study abroad as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange program, an equal number were sent to our Rotary district as inbound students. This is the way it works every year across our Rotary district, with an equal number of students coming and going.

and many other countries find homes in places like Breckenridge, Brush, Castle Rock, Denver, Longmont and here in Boulder, which has always been a strong supporter of the program. One of these inbound students was Aimee’s counterpart from Croatia.

Dora Bacurin was from Zagreb, and she spent her year abroad in Golden. She was a great student and ambassador for her country, liked by everyone she met. Always open for a conversation, like Aimee, she embodied what being a Rotary Youth Exchange student is all about. Somewhere, there’s always an opportunity to build a bridge, and you never know when the next chance will arrive. For Dora, it came on a bus. Not just a chance, it was a chance encounter.

She was sitting next to Chad Stamm, one of the volunteer chaperones for all the inbound exchange students at the Rotary District Conference. On Chad’s other side was John Regur, who had since joined the Boulder Rotary Club after seeing his daughter off to Croatia. They were all riding on the bus from the hotel to the conference center for the evening’s events.

“So, how’s Aimee doing?” Chad asked John.

“She seems to be doing really well. She loves her host family, and she’s really enjoying Zagreb.”

Dora’s head twisted hard to the left when she heard the name of her home city. “Zagreb,” she said.

“That’s where I’m from!”

“Really?” John said. “Well, my daughter Aimee is over there right now. She’s one of our district’s outbound exchange students.”

“Aimee?” Dora said. She paused, and then she finished. “Aimee Regur?”

For a split second, John went blank, almost like he wasn’t even there. Then there was a moment of recognition in his face, and finally, his jaw dropped.

“Aimee Regur is staying at my house in Croatia,” Dora said.

“My parents are hosting her.”

“Aimee is my daughter! My name is John Regur. You’re —” “Yes!” There was a swirling of inbound and outbound, hosting and traveling, goodwill and good luck. “Yes” was the perfect word. John mentioned to Dora how he had sent a gift from Colorado, a set of western-style steer

horns to go on the wall, and Dora mentioned how her family had been so happy about the gift, especially her dad who had always loved cowboys.

They talked about Aimee and what life was like in Golden for a girl from Croatia. They laughed about the sheer coincidence of the situation. They shared a unique

connection that embodies what Rotary Youth Exchange is all about.

Chad just sat there between them, stunned, and proud to be part of such an amazing program, happy to have witnessed the world becoming just a little bit smaller right before his eyes. He was thrilled to have been on that bus.

At a typical Tuesday night meeting, Boulder New Generations Rotary (BNGRC – a satellite club of Boulder Rotary) members build community while working on hands-on service projects. Inspiring a culture of peace - The Rotarian way

magine over 35,000 Rotary clubs worldwide all focused on peace building and offering Rotary’s guiding principles as an alternative to conflict. Boulder Rotary Club demonstrates through constant energy and peaceful actions how we wage peace, together.

As one of many Rotary Action Groups for Peace (RAGFP) around the world, Boulder Rotary Club was one of the first clubs to register as a Peacebuilder Club and continues to make meaningful progress in inspiring a culture of peace.

As with all Peacebuilder Clubs, Boulder Rotary elevates and raises the voices of indigenous peoples and all minority groups within the larger society. A recent Friday Rotary program featured Rotarian Patty Limerick, faculty director and chair of the Board of the Center of the American West, interviewing Arapaho Filmmaker Ava Hamilton about the visions and aspirations that guide her work, her varied audiences and her crucially important relations with tribal elders.

Boulder Rotary’s next century of service is focused on peace building and the expansion of service projects that promote peace such as:

Rotary’s Peaceful Schools Program offers presentations at local schools to educate children about the 4-Way Test and peaceful solutions to age-appropriate challenges.

The RAGFP supported PeaceJam education in Boulder as another way of teaching children about positive peace. The PeaceJam program was launched in February 1996 to provide the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates with a programmatic vehicle to use in working together to teach youth the art of peace.

The club supports recruitment and sponsorship of Rotary Peace Fellow candidates and the six Rotary Peace Centers around the world.

A peace builder sub-committee, “Trees 4 Sustainability and Peace,” is working with the University of Colorado to plant a Sustainability Tree and a Rotary Peace Pole at the opening ceremonies of the Conference on World Affairs to be held in Boulder.

Boulder Rotary Club sets the standard of excellence for Rotarian peace building and provides all Rotarians a blueprint of how Rotary clubs can create infrastructures for peace in their local communities.

Beyond a Rotarian’s personal use of this test, Boulder Rotary has the opportunity to introduce these principles to local students. Over the years Boulder Rotary has developed a variety of programs for students of all grade levels to educate them about Rotary and how asking these simple questions when a problem or issue arises can help them come to a solution sooner and with better results.

One of the most rewarding programs, the Peaceful Schools Program, focuses on working with elementary school children from first to third grades. During this program, Rotarians introduce the 4–Way Test in a simpler format called “The Four Awesome Questions.”

Before you think, say or do something, ask yourself: Is it true? Is it fair to everyone?

Will it build friendships? Will it be good for everyone?

This program introduces the Four Awesome Questions to students by inviting high school and college students as mentors of the program.

The student mentors read classic children’s books with ethical story lines and ask the students if the characters are using the Four Awesome Questions to work out their problems. During the session, mentors also share in a physical activity and even sing songs. The elementary students really look up to their student mentors, while the

older students enjoy being with the younger kids. The experience is especially meaningful to Rotarians who enjoy seeing students learn about the 4–Way Test and how it can be an effective tool for solving problems. “In the end it’s a real Win-Win-Win for everyone” said Danny Lindau, chair of the 4-Way Test Committee.

A program has also been established for middle school and high school students focusing on a more comprehensive use of the 4–Way Test. Rotarians meet with an individual class of 20 to 30 students during a regular class period. Students receive their own 4-Way Test card and together, they recite the guiding principles. Next, students are asked to write problems or issues that are impacting their lives on a 3x5 note card. Mentors select several cards and discuss how to implement the 4–Way Test in coming to a solution for the situation. In middle school, grades 6 to 8, students have a wide range of issues they worry about, from bullying, kids stealing and cheating on homework, to more serious problems at home. In the end, middle school students have an open, honest and sincere discussion.

This experience leaves students with valuable tools for approaching and discovering healthy resolve for the next problem they encounter.

February 27 marked the most recent program hosted at Southern Hills Middle School. The 8th grade class of 175 students participated in a 4–Way Test session with student mentors from Fairview High School International Baccalaureate and Honors programs, as well as Rotary-sponsored Fairview High School Interact Club students.

“Maybe we’ll see future Rotarians come out of that experience, or at least a group of kids who think more about others as they consider how their thoughts and actions can impact others as they move through life,” said Lindau.

Preserve Planet Earth: A catalyst for Blue Star Recyclers

n 1990, Rotary International (RI) President Paulo Costa set a goal to have 1,000 Preserve Planet Earth (PPE) committees in Rotary Clubs around the world. “The purpose of the Preserve Planet Earth theme is to focus the attention of all of RI, its member clubs and districts, and individual Rotarians on the universal need to preserve and protect our planet Earth.”

Members Norris Hermsmeyer, Bob Herrmann and Sam Pottinger were champions for Boulder Rotary.

The Boulder Rotary PPE Committee became one of the most successful environmental sustainability committees in any Rotary club across the world.

Boulder Rotary PPE initiatives have included publishing a resource guide for community recycling, listing recycling

sites and hazardous waste drop-off centers in the Boulder area, as well as conservation tips and listings of ecofriendly businesses. At the turn of the millennium, PPE teamed up with the Boulder Daily Camera and the Boulder Energy Conservation Center to create an even more comprehensive guide which has wide distribution through the Daily Camera each Earth Day. A signature example Boulder Rotary’s PPE work is the Eco-Cycle Blue Star Recyclers partnership. This innovative partnership benefits the environment, adults on the autism spectrum, and the Boulder community through the teamwork of the Boulder Rotary Club, Eco-Cycle in Boulder, and Blue Star Recyclers in Colorado Springs.

of Eco-Cycle that recycles e-waste, opened in 2001 and was the first facility of its kind in the nation.

Eco-Cycle takes extraordinary steps to make sure e-waste is recycled responsibly and has helped Boulder become one of the top cities in per capita consumer recycling in the nation.

Bill Morris, a social entrepreneur, started Blue Star Recyclers as a nonprofit eight years ago. Blue Star Recyclers adds the talents of adults on the autism spectrum to the recycling process, creating meaningful work for a neglected population.

Blue Star Recyclers’ employees have demonstrated a close to zero-error rate, a zero-employee turnover rate, a zero-injury rate and top employee morale.

The challenge for Rotary was that both Eco-Cycle and Blue Star Recyclers excel at what they do. Why should they partner?

Thanks to the efforts of Boulder Rotary, Eco-Cycle agreed to house the Blue Star Recyclers operation in Eco-Cycle’s warehouse at the CHaRM campus on East Arapahoe.

Eco-Cycle has contracted with Blue Star Recyclers to manage the recycling of not just computers, but all their e-waste. This was essential

for Blue Star Recyclers financial model to work. In turn, Blue Star Recyclers agreed to be counted under the Eco-Cycle umbrella of successful operations.

But there was an additional piece to the puzzle: Blue Star Recyclers would need $25,000 in start-up funding. They projected that within six months they would achieve financial sustainability, but they needed the funds to get started. That’s when Boulder Rotary Club stepped up, raising over $27,000. In addition, two Rotarians stepped up to give $8,000.

Eco-Cycle enjoyed well-deserved recognition from the community and obtained a community grant. In turn, Blue Star Recyclers received a state grant that was partially attributed to their collaboration with Eco-Cycle and Boulder Rotary.

Boulder Rotary’s PPE Committee is not stopping here! Plans are underway to partner with Blue Star Recyclers to expand to cities around the country, setting up partnerships built around Rotary, recycling programs and nonprofits that help adults on the autism spectrum. As the program’s tagline states “we turn e-waste into work!”

“It’s the best place to be on a Friday afternoon in Boulder, Colorado!” A typical Boulder Rotary meeting unites over 110 members and guests at the Boulder JCC on Fridays from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m.

nown by its members as “the best place to be on a Friday in Boulder!”

A valuable benefit of Boulder Rotary Club membership is learning from and participating in programs during weekly Friday lunch meetings. Boulder Rotary’s Programs Committee, responsible for 45 presentations each year, strives to present “Ted Talk-quality” programs – compelling speakers on challenging, timely or fun topics, often enhanced by high quality graphics or video. Boulder Rotary Club is proud of the excellence of each 30-minute Friday program, a positive contributor to increasing APRIL 2019

attendance and membership.

Program topics range from science and technology (the problem of managing 1,300 active satellites in earth’s orbit), health care and medicine (moving closer to a cure for Alzheimer’s disease), sports (how Olympic athletes develop mental toughness), arts and music (a holiday performance by the CU student jazz combo), business (how to sustain a strong economy in Boulder), and public policy (a nonpartisan preview of the initiatives and referenda on the 2018 ballot).

HIGHLIGHTS OF RECENT PROGRAMS HAVE INCLUDED: CU Professor Stewart Hoover on religion, society and politics in the

digital age. Hoover discussed how traditional religious institutions have been joined by new, nontraditional ones that use digital media to promote their beliefs. He drew fascinating analogies between the impacts of religion and media on politics in the United States, Europe, Russia and the Middle East.

Retired Navy Captain Alfred Scott McLaren, a renowned deep sea explorer and scientist, described the scientific, economic, political and strategic importance of the Arctic Ocean. The Arctic submarine explorations that he once commanded, study the interaction among the Arctic region’s ocean, atmosphere, ice mantle and permafrost land mass, and hold the key to unlocking mysteries

surrounding climate change and global warming.

Korey Wise was one of five teenagers convicted of assault and rape of a jogger in Central Park in 1989. After serving 13 years and four months in prison, he was exonerated of the crime. His attorney, Jane Fisher-Byrialsen, subsequently sued New York City on his behalf and negotiated a settlement of $12 million. Jane now practices law in Denver specializing in false confessions by accused perpetrators of crimes. She shared the story of the Central Park case, the civil suit and Korey’s subsequent philanthropy, which includes the Korey Wise Innocence Project at University of Colorado at Boulder.
