Best Cuisine BEST AMERICAN CUISINE

BOULDER CORK In a town known for its blink-and-you-missed-it restaurants, the Boulder Cork has remained a steady, trusted friend among the debutantes. Since opening in 1969, the Boulder Cork has created a casual but attentive kind of dining the showcases the best of modern American cuisine. You start with the highest quality ingredients and prepare the dishes “in a way that lets the food speak for itself.” Chef Jim Smailer, with over 30 years of experience, draws from his travels in Hawaii, Italy and the Caribbean and other influences to craft inspired entrees of seafood, steaks, pasta and more. There is a focus on locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients prepared and served at the height of their deliciousness. The Cork is a top choice for the finest steaks, chops and prime rib, and offers a worthy wine list with extensive by-the-glass choices. 3295 30th St., Boulder, 303.443.9505, bouldercork.com. Runner Up: Flagstaff House Restaurant, 1138 Flagstaff Road, Boulder, 303.442.4640, flagstaffhouse.com.

BEST CHINESE CUISINE

CHINA GOURMET China is a huge country, with over a billion people who have plenty of favorite ways to fix rice and noodles and such. If you’re going to be the Best Chinese restaurant, you have to cover a lot of territory. That explains why China Gourmet has nearly 100 different choices on the menu, prepared to order and ready to feed your inner hunger for great taste, fresh ingredients, and friendly prices. You could probably eat at China Gourmet every night for a year and still find a new way to switch it up. Ever tried the Sha Cha Beef, or Gin du Pork? Ever wonder about the dish called Ants Climbing A Tree? (Hmm, gotta bookmark that one.) Order ahead and they’ll have it ready in just minutes! 3970 N. Broadway, Boulder, 303.440.3500; 1345 Dry Creek Drive, Longmont, 303.776.6930; chinagourmetmenu.com. Runner Up: Zoe Ma Ma, 2010 10th St., Boulder, 303.545.6262, zoemama.com.

CARELLI’S RISTORANTE ITALIANO Carelli’s Ristorante Italiano is still one of the best restaurants in town, no matter the culinary category. Since the beginning, Carelli’s has created exceptional traditional and contemporary interpretations of the dishes of northern and southern Italy. “We are a scratch kitchen, and we make everything to order, so it’s incredibly fresh,” owner Greg Carelli says. “Our menu hasn’t changed in twenty five years, and our customers appreciate being able to return again and again for their favorites. This kind of menu continuity has proven very successful for us,” Carelli explains. Fresh fish is on the menu every evening, and the Shrimp Scampi and Pollo Saltimbocca are longtime favorites. No Italian repast is complete without the vino, and Carelli’s has an extensive wine list to beautifully complement your entrees. 645 30th St., Boulder, 303.938.9300, carellis.com. Runner Up: Arugula Bar e Ristorante, 2785 Iris Ave., Boulder, 303.443.5100, arugularistorante.com.

BEST FRENCH CUISINE

BRASSERIE TEN TEN For many of us, French cuisine has a reputation for being a bit on the snobby side. Turns out, that’s just not the case. In fact, the classic French bistro was one of the first types of restaurants where you could get delicious local dishes served quickly and unpretentiously. Brasserie Ten Ten brings the spirit of a bustling bistro to downtown Boulder, with French-inspired cuisine and classic dishes: steak frites, brique poulet, boullaibaise, warm goat cheese salad and chocolat pot de creme. Fresh oysters are served daily (and during happy hour). Brasserie Ten Ten’s amazing weekend brunch features fresh patisserie from their in-house bakery (picture croissants, chocolate eclairs, cinnamon rolls) plus classic eggs Benedict, confit hash, waffles, yogurt, fresh fruit and local granola. Enjoy your dinner in the warm and welcome dining room, or on the open-air terrace (where you can indulge in another classic bistro “thing” – people watching). This is the place to bring your bon appétit! 1011 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.998.1010, brasserietenten.com.

BEST MEXICAN CUISINE

EFRAIN’S MEXICAN RESTAURANT & CANTINA Authentic Northern Chihuahua-style Mexican cooking (the flavors are robust, and the chilies have authority!) has been pleasing the fans at Efrain’s for over 30 years now. This is the real deal, fresh and cooked daily. Efrain’s founder says he learned to cook by watching his mom, and calls her “the best cook in the world.” She must have made some killer rellenos, beef and chicken chimichangas, sizzling fajitas, tender pork chile verde and very authentic tamales (it’s all in the masa… except when it’s not). Add a chilled cerveza or go large (there are more than a dozen different margaritas on the menu), each a perfect companion to the tasty items on your plate. Claro? 1630 N. 63rd St., Boulder, 303.440.4045; 451 S. Pratt Pkwy., Longmont, 720.494.0777; 101 E. Cleveland St., Lafayette, 303.666.7544; efrainsrestaurant.com. Runner Up: Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant, 1101 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.444.3690, riograndemexican.com.

Curry-N-Kebob Owner Zuned Khan opened his restaurant to feature culinary highlights from Northern India and his home country of Bangladesh. Everything is cooked to order in 10 to 15 minutes and you simply can’t get it fresher! Khan says he is “glad to be back in a city that truly appreciates Indian cuisine.” All entrees are available for take out. The curries, Tandoori and Kebobs, Vegetable Korma, Nan and Roti are all delicious. Dine-in-only daily specials (like Chicken Masala or Vindaloo) are just $7.95 for lunch and $9.95 for dinner. BEST MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE

THE MEDITERRANEAN RESTAURANT What gives Mediterranean cuisine its unique gusto and spirit? “The beauty of the Mediterranean approach comes from its many sources, which include Spanish, Italian, Greek, Moroccan and French influences,” says Greg Topel, director of operations at The Mediterranean Restaurant. “What each of these cuisine sensibilities shares is a table full of food is very indicative of the land, with robust flavors, and very healthy ingredients.” You can see why, in a town of foodies and athletes, The Med’s menu is a perfect fit. Shoutouts go to the Paellas (classic Spanish rice dishes simmered with fresh thyme, lemon and white wine, over saffron rice), the Piccata di Pollo, and the Salmone Acqua Pazza (Scottish salmon, served in a saffron broth with fennel, tomatoes, leeks, potatoes and an herb salad). “We’ve been here for 23 years, and we just want to express our gratitude to Boulder at large for the continuing support. This is a very rewarding part of our job.” 1002 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.444.5335, themedboulder.com. BEST THAI CUISINE

BEST VIETNAMESE/PHO CUISINE

KHOW THAI CAFÉ

CHEZ THUY VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT

The best Thai cuisine shows its roots in tradition, but focuses on the simple but artistic preparation of fresh ingredients. No flavors dominate, but rather each blends harmoniously throughout the whole dish. Khow Thai has been creating tasty Thai dishes since they opened in 2002. Toi, Khow Thai’s owner, is from Thailand and draws inspiration from the recipes that she learned from her mother. Just about everything is cooked when you order it, and the prices are kind to your wallet. Choose an appetizer to start things off (can’t go wrong with the Spring Rolls, Satey or crispy Egg Rolls). Pad Thai is still one of the top favorite entrees, but you can also check out all the curry dishes, the Drunken Noodles, or seafood. Libations include mango and coconut juices, soft drinks, Thai tea and coffee. There’s an excellent lunch buffet every weekday (it’s a great way to sample all the dishes). Everything is available to go, but why not pull up a chair and stay a while? 1600 Broadway, Boulder, 303.447.0273, khow-thai.com.

When you are enjoying the succulent flavors of Basil Lemongrass Fish or Cornish Game Hen HotPot at Chez Thuy, you are tasting the influences of Indonesian, French, Thai and Chinese cooking traditions, from near and far. The cilantro, lemongrass, ginger, tamarind and chilies on your plate are world travelers, and you’re happy to be along for the trip! Sweet, salty, sour or fiery, every entrée is created with ingredients and flavors that are carefully chosen to complement each other. Pho, the deeply satisfying Vietnamese noodle soup, earned its claim to fame as a morning dish sold by street vendors. The Pho at Chez Thuy is a more refined experience no doubt, but loses none of its literal street cred. The first thing Owner Thuy Le wants you to know is, you can’t hurry things when you make traditional Pho. The broth has to simmer and perform its perfect alchemy on its own time. Good broth should be clear, Thuy Le says. One thing that is perfectly clear: we keep choosing Chez Thuy as our favorite place for Vietnamese dishes and Pho like no other. 2655 28th St., Boulder, 303.442.1700, chezthuy.com. Runner Up: Black Pepper Pho, 2770 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.440.1948, blackpepperpho.com.

Best Foodie Experience

BEST AMBIANCE

CARELLI’S RISTORANTE ITALIANO The best ambiance doesn’t announce itself. It is as gracious as the rest of your dining experience, welcoming you the moment you enter. Romantic and magical, it takes you to another place as you savor the restaurant rhythms, the mellow music, the just-right lighting. “The theater of the restaurant is a big part of truly fine dining,” says Greg Carelli, owner of Carelli’s Ristorante Italiano. And it’s all in the details, he explains, like Carelli’s color palette that was inspired by the restaurant designs of Barbara Lazaroff, who co-founded Spago with her then-husband Wolfgang Puck. “We have brought together the warm woods, mellow metals, the open fireplace, into our restaurant’s timeless architecture and design. Each of these elements adds to the total experience.” 645 30th St., Boulder, 303.938.9300, carellis.com. Runner Up: Flagstaff House Restaurant, 1138 Flagstaff Road, Boulder, 303.442.4640, flagstaffhouse.com.

BEST APPETIZERS

THE MEDITERRANEAN RESTAURANT When it comes to serving the best appetizers, you might say the Mediterranean restaurant has a special advantage. “Our extensive tapas menu offers more than 30 different items, and each one can be served as an appetizer,” says Greg Topel, director of operations at The Med. “Tapas get a lot of attention here, from our chefs and of course, from our patrons.” Innovative and thoughtful, each one delivers a culinary mini-vacation. Rest assured, you’ll want to keep exploring. Consider the Braised Short Rib with Polenta, served with caramelized shallots and gorgonzola; the Grilled Hanger Steak with sliced tomatoes and gorgonzola; or crisp Calamari with Marinara. You think you don’t like brussel sprouts? Bruselas y queso (wood roasted, with toasted walnuts, feta and a sherry shallot vinaigrette) will change your mind with the first bite. There’s a full bar with specialty cocktails, fine beers and lots of wines by the glass to pair up with your appetizers. 1002 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.444.5335, themedboulder.com. BEST BAKERY AND BEST LUNCH

BEST SANDWICH

BREADWORKS BAKERY AND CAFE

SNARF'S SANDWICHES

When you run a bakery 24 hours a day for 20 years, you go through a LOT of flour. And if you’re baking at the Breadworks, that means only stone ground, organic flour. “We’ve used over 12 million pounds of it since we opened,” says Breadworks Owner Larry Domnitz. “We bake three to four thousand pounds of baked goods on an average night.” Each hand-shaped artisan loaf is made from scratch: the baguettes and batards, Rustique and Italiano, the focaccia, too. A rotating menu of specialty breads is worth exploring… and you can even get fresh, hot organic pretzels four days a week! Of course, there are amazing pastries, including muffins, danishes, brownies, tarts, cookies and the flakiest croissants you can find anywhere. Breadworks Bakery and Café is also home to an incredible a la carte assortment of ready-to-go items – but it’s a great place to grab a table with friends and enjoy lunch the civilized way, too! Order up one of the daily entrees (there’s a salmon dish nearly every day), a mix-and-match of side dishes (most sides are vegetarian), or head over to the wood-burning oven for fresh quarter-pie-size slices of pizza. Paninis are grilled to order, and in the wintertime there are always at least four different soups made daily and served with a fresh piece of bread. There’s a toss-to-order salad station, too. The key to everything is the fresh ingredients and a skilled kitchen crew. Colleen Doran, with classical training at the Culinary Institute of America and experience at foodie-famous Chez Panisse, manages the kitchen and menu planning (she is also married to Larry). “With all the lunchtime options and competition in town, we are very glad to have been recognized for the Best Lunch!” Larry Domnitz says. “We are honored.” 2644 Broadway, Boulder, 303.444.5667, breadworks.net.

While Snarf’s has grown a lot in the past two decades, the very first Snarf’s was right here in Boulder. Today, the chain includes 25 stores in four states, and for good reason. Jill Preston, the director of marketing, describes Snarf’s sandwiches as oven-toasted, hearty and hand-crafted. All the meats and veggies are sliced in-house, assuring the freshest possible ingredients. “We have a lot of vegetarian options, too,” Preston said. Gluten-free bread is also available. For new customers, Preston recommends the Italian, which comes with salami, pepperoni, capicola, mortadella and provolone, and the Roast Beef & Provolone. The atmosphere of Snarf’s is, in Preston’s words, “funky and laid-back.” 2128 Pearl St. Boulder, 303.444.7766, eatsnarfs.com. Runner Up: Salvaggio’s Deli, 1397 Pearl Street, Boulder, 303.545.6800, salvaggiosdeli.net.

Runner Up for Best Bakery: Spruce Confections, 767 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.449.6773; 4684 Broadway, Boulder, 303.449.5819; spruceconfections.com. Runner Up for Best Lunch: The Mediterranean Restaurant, 1002 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.444.5335, themedboulder.com.

BEST BREAKFAST AND BEST BRUNCH AND BEST GLUTEN FREE

TANGERINE If you’re looking for good food, menu choices that cater to food allergies, and reasonable prices, look no further. Tangerine has you covered for breakfast and brunch. When asked about the type of food served, Justin Medlin, general manager and executive chef, said “We consider it more rustic cooking.” The menu includes comfort food favorites, like pancakes, French toast, corned beef hash, and chicken & waffles, as well as some unique options with a decidedly Mediterranean influence, like the Polenta & Romesco, which features poached eggs served with leeks and spinach. What’s more, almost any dish on the menu can be modified to be gluten-free, dairyfree or vegetarian. When it comes to gluten-free options, Medlin says, “Our pancakes are definitely our best seller.” The chefs at Tangerine are committed to sourcing local ingredients as much as possible, including Colorado organic eggs, seasonal greens, and locally raised beef. Tangerine also offers fresh squeezed OJ every day. Medlin describes the atmosphere as casual and relaxing, saying, “It’s a bright, open space.” Both indoor and outdoor seating is available. Tangerine is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The full brunch menu is always available. Additionally, lunch options are available on weekdays. 2777 Iris Ave., Boulder, 303.443.2333, tangerineboulder.com. What’s more, you can enjoy this scenic dining experience year round. Weather permitting, outdoor seating is always available. From November 2 through January 3, afternoon tea will be served daily from 2 to 4 p.m. Note that reservations are required 24 hours in advance. BEST DESSERT

GLACIER HOME MADE ICE CREAM & GELATO Kate Buffe, manager for Glacier Home Made Ice Cream & Gelato, is proud of her business’s local roots. “First and foremost, we’d like to emphasize that we’ve been in Boulder for 15 years,” she said. Given the unique, tasty treats offered, it’s hardly surprising that they’ve done well. Buffe explains that the Glacier team is constantly seeking out new and different flavors, stating, “We’ll try anything once.” Some of the standouts on their current menu include Funky Donkey, a peanut butter ice cream with fudge and Oreos, and Coffee Caramel Crunch, which also features Oreos, this time blended into coffee ice cream with caramel swirls. Additionally, Glacier has a number of gluten-free options, as well as a selection of sorbet which are dairy-free. The next time you’re looking for a fix for your sweet tooth, pay Glacier Home Made Ice Cream & Gelato a visit. 3133 28th St., Boulder, 303.440.6542, glaciericecream.com.

BEST CATERER

A SPICE OF LIFE David Rubin, president and co-owner of A Spice of Life, has high standards. “Our goal is to exceed expectations every time.” For Rubin and staff, that means making his clients’ events successful by providing top-tier catering options that run the gambit. A Spice of Life has quite a bit of experience with large, formal events, like weddings, but Rubin explains they can also handle the smaller, day-to-day stuff, like casual corporate lunches, too. The business has been around for 26 years, but took a blow in 2013 when the floods devastated their former facility. Today, A Spice of Life operates out of a new facility and has even opened a beer and tasting room. Rubin credits the Spice of Life team and the community for sticking by them throughout the process of relocating. Now that they’re settled again, he’s enthusiastic about doing what he and his staff do best. 5541 Central Ave., #272, Boulder, 303.443.4049, aspiceoflife.com.

BEST FARM TO TABLE DINNER

BEST NEW EATERY

BEST LATE-NIGHT RESTAURANT

BLACK CAT FARM TABLE BISTRO

BLACKBELLY RESTAURANT

Chef Eric Skokan and his wife, Jill, opened Black Cat Farm Table Bistro in 2006 with a simple goal. In Skokan’s words, “Great food and great service.” For the Black Cat team, that translates to taking care of their customers over and above everything else. “The vast majority of what diners see comes from our farm,” Skokan said. The Black Cat farm is 130 acres and supplies the restaurant with both livestock and produce. “We harvest every day,” Skokan explains, “and as a consequence the menus change every day.” That said, both pork and lamb are constants on the menu, and there are always gluten-free/vegan options. Black Cat Farm Table Bistro is open for dinner only seven nights a week. Skokan says seating is “primarily reservation oriented,” so be sure to call ahead. 1964 13th St., Boulder, 303.444.5500, blackcatboulder.com

“We’ve been rockin’ since we opened,” said Hosea Rosenberg, owner and chef at Blackbelly. The restaurant debuted just last year, and Rosenberg’s assessment sounds spot on. When Blackbelly first opened, the plan was to rely primarily on their own farm for both produce and meat. However, they quickly outgrew the small farm. Rosenburg now works with a number of local ranchers and farmers to supply both the restaurant and their in-house butcher shop. He is currently looking for a larger piece of land to again grow his own vegetables and raise his own livestock. Blackbelly is open five days a week for breakfast and lunch served “graband-go” style. COSMO'S PIZZA “Believe me, you make a great product, keep the place clean, give good service, and people appreciate that.” That’s Ryan Shorter, owner of Cosmo’s Pizza, describing the simple but effective philosophy that’s made him a repeat winner over the course of the last 15 years. Cosmo’s is the go-to place for hot late-night food. Doors are open until 2 a.m., and pizza is available for take-out or delivery. Additionally, customers visiting Cosmo’s in person have the option of pizza by the slice. Shorter says that’s the most popular option for night owls. All Cosmo’s pizzas are hand-tossed and baked in a stone oven. Both the dough and sauce are made from scratch right there in the shop, and only the freshest veggies are good enough to top these pies. For good food late at night, there simply isn’t a better option. 659 30th St., Boulder, 303.447.3278, cosmospizza.com. Staff are expected to complete a thorough training process, including extensive knowledge of preparation techniques in order to accommodate dietary restrictions. It’s always okay to request modifications to any dish. Complementary Flagstaff House Restaurant service is available to every guest. BEST BAR

THE BITTER BAR

AVERY BREWING COMPANY

Keeping it simple has worked very well for The Bitter Bar. Situated at 9th and Walnut, it’s in a prime spot for any watering hole. Sure, the bar could have been run-of-the-mill, but The Bitter Bar is everything a generic tavern is not. And our readers have given thumbs ups to the approach with their Boulder County Gold votes. Cocktails are classic and classy. If you’re unfamiliar with bitters, perhaps try a couple of delicious offerings like a Bitter Old Fashioned (aged rum, powdered sugar, angostura, and peychaud’s bitters) or a Momo & Rye (rye, crème de peche, and orange bitters). The Bitter Bar serves a variety of cocktails, draft and bottled beer, red and white wine, and even some stellar food courtesy of Chef Hosea Rosenberg. Your bartender will know exactly what to pair with cured meats, smoked salmon pate, marinated olives or a cheese trio. 835 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.442.3050, thebitterbar.com.

With so many great breweries and tap houses in and around Boulder, the competition in this category is particularly strong. Yet our readers honored Avery Brewing with the top slot in both categories. Avery is known for stellar craft beers: Joe’s Pilsner, Avery IPA, White Rascal Belgian White, Dry Hopped IPA, and The Czar Russian Imperial Stout, to name a few. Avery bottles more than 20 different beers each year, including the beloved seasonal six-packs like Karma Ale, Old Jubilation Ale, and New World Porter. Avery’s Tap Room boasts a huge selection of its beers on tap and is quickly becoming a very hot spot for lunch and dinner, too. (Smoked prime rib, anyone?) Guided brewery tours are available at certain times seven days a week (see website) and self-guided tours are okay, too. If by some slim chance you haven’t had an Avery brew, get to the brewery or your local pub or liquor store and enjoy some of the best beer in Boulder and, for that matter, in Colorado. 4910 Nautilus Court, Boulder, 303.440.4324, averybrewing.com.

It’s not overdoing it to think of Dushanbe as a tea drinker’s paradise. Tucked into Central Park along Boulder Creek, it’s both a tourist attraction and a favorite local getaway. The Teahouse itself must be seen. Built by hand without power tools in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, it was crated up and shipped as a gift to Boulder, its sister city. Dushanbe offers breakfast, brunch (weekends), lunch, dinner, traditional Afternoon Tea (reservations, please), and catering for special events. “We try hard to offer our guests a carefully chosen selection of tea each year that represents some of the best offerings,” says Owner Sara Stewart Martinelli. “We taste a lot of tea in order to choose the one that represents the style and region in which it’s grown so that our guests get a great opportunity to sample premium teas from around the world.” 1770 13th St., Boulder, 303.442.4993, boulderteahouse.com.

Flagstaff House is recognized in this category for its wines, but the restaurant itself, built into the mountainside at 6,000 feet, provides a dining experience with views of Boulder unlike any other. Started by Don Monette in 1971, the wine program now includes 18,000 bottles on hand with 3,800 selections. Every year since 1983, Flagstaff House has earned the prestigious Wine Spectator’s Grand Award as one of the ten best wine lists in the world. The wine cellar includes great depth in California, Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Champagne, but also emphasizes great wines from around the world. “When this property became available in 1971, my grandfather, Don, was able to pair fine dining with a great wine program,” says Dining Room Manager Adam Monette. “The dream came from him.” 1138 Flagstaff Road, Boulder, 303.442.4640, flagstaffhouse.com.

BEST PIZZA

PIZZERIA LOCALE From Bobby Stuckey and Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson – the masterminds behind Frasca Food and Wine – Pizzeria Locale is Boulder’s hip Naples-inspired pizzeria. Using a state-of-the-art Ferrara pizza oven, a jawdroppingly expensive meat slicer and seamless service, Locale has been tossing pies on Pearl Street since 2011. Pizzas are divided into two main categories, Bianche and Rosse, and baked in their raging-hot brick oven before being served (whole!) to guests. Wowed by numbers? In their first year alone, Locale plowed through 39,000 pounds of 00 Caputo flour, 16,640 pounds of Italian tomatoes, and 17,333 pounds of mozzarella di bufala. Top menu contenders are the Margherita and the Mais, with the addictive Arancini pulling up the rear. Want a midday nosh? BEST BURRITO

ILLEGAL PETE’S In Boulder County, the words “burrito” and “Illegal Pete’s” are synonymous – and for good reason. With all-natural, made-from-scratch ingredients and its finger on the pulse of humanitarianism and good karma, Illegal Pete’s has been serving our community burgeoning Mission-style burritos since 1995. Founder and head burrito slayer Pete Turner says the Illegal Pete’s secret is two-fold, lying in quality ingredients and “a good stir.” Traditionally a layered affair, burritos at Illegal Pete’s are of a stirred variety: ingredients are tossed together to ensure full flavor in each and every bite. And there’s no stopping Pete’s burrito boom. “We’re looking to grow both in-state and out of state within the next few years, if the right opportunities present themselves,” he says. May the burrito be with you, Pete. 1447 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.444.3055, illegalpetes.com.

With names like Mighty Aphrodite, Siam I Am and Doc Holliday, Mad Greens not only tosses up fresh, inventive salads with loads of flavor, they manage to keep it cheeky and fun in the process. Lifelong friends and chefs Marley Hodgson and Dan Long founded the local salad staple in 2004 with the intention of ushering the fast food movement into fresher, healthier territory. “Eat better” is their business’s motto, and it’s one they adhere to firmly: they’ve partnered with sustainable community farming movement Agriburbia in Golden to manage the Mad Greens farm, where they grow their own fare, like heirloom lettuces, tomatoes, cucumbers, and aromatics. “We have to be true to the area we’re in. That’s part of being sustainable,” says Co-founder Hodgson. With 21 house-made dressings, paninis, wraps, juices and soups rounding out their fresh offerings, Mad Greens wants their guests to love the food as much as they love making it. They’re definitely making it easy for us. 1808 29th St., #1144, Boulder, 720.496.4157, madgreens.com. Runner Up: Modmarket, 1600 28th St., Boulder, 303.440.0476, modmarket.com.

BEST SEAFOOD

BEST SUSHI

JAX FISH HOUSE & OYSTER BAR Coastal tourists may scoff at the idea of a legit fish restaurant in coast-less Colorado, but one step into the fresh and briny atmosphere of this jam-packed West Pearl restaurant, and they’ll quickly learn what we locals already know: Jax does seafood well. So well, in fact, that they’ve won multiple awards and accolades since they began shucking oysters and slinging salmon in 1994. On the menu, you’ll find vast crab selections, fresh fish from the grill and caviar dreams, and that’s just the beginning. But just because Jax sources their seafood from flown-in locales doesn’t mean they’ve left the eat-local movement behind: local farms supply the majority of Jax’s fresh vegetables. And lest we forget a commitment to sustainability, which is at the forefront of their mission: Jax is proud to be Colorado’s first restaurant to be certified by the Monterey Bay Seafood Watch. Ahoy, mateys. 928 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.444.1811, jaxfishhouse.com.

SUSHI ZANMAI Fresh, festive and fish-focused, Sushi Zanmai continues to rake in the accolades as Boulder’s landmark sushi restaurant after almost 30 years in the business. The (mostly) raw fare is served from the bustling bar, where you’re likely to see plenty of swift slices, expert dexterity, and faces that take their sushi very seriously. The sashimi is hyper-fresh, the sushi rolls are creative – the Elway is a new seasonal fave – and many guests remark on the reasonable prices (a rarity in Boulder these days). The food is so good, in fact, it leads some guests to croon: karaoke is a regular offering at Zanmai. Keep doing what you’re doing, Zanmai. BEST HOLISTIC CARE/WELLNESS CENTER AND BEST PHYSICAL THERAPIST AND BEST PILATES/YOGA STUDIO

AVANTI THERAPY Avanti Therapy is not your traditional physical therapy clinic. That’s intentional, according to Heather Marinaccio Boak, who locally coowns this holistic care center with Julie Edelman. “Often a physical therapist will see a patient for 15 minutes before turning the patient over to an aide, who typically runs through a list of generalized exercises” Marinaccio Boak explains. “We focus on movement education as part of physical therapy, which is unique in the sense that it gives the patient a better understanding of their own body and its individual needs. At Avanti, you are with your physical therapist for an hour to meet these goals and optimize healing time.” Avanti is a diverse group of passionate therapists specializing in different treatment approaches, including Pilates, myofascial release, craniosacral therapy and dry needling. “Our approach is holistic because we’re looking at each person as a whole being, taking into consideration what lifestyle changes are necessary and how we can best provide them with the support they need in life, to heal from their injury.” Avanti is one of the only physical therapy clinic in the state to offer the Schroth method for scoliosis. “People come from all over the country to do an immersion here,” she says of the insurancesupported program. We offer pickup and delivery service.” She consigns estates and households and can also do estate sales in people’s homes. BEST PLACE TO BUY WINDOW TREATMENTS

VERLO MATTRESS Other Mattress companies may have more local names, but with their factory in Longmont, Verlo Mattress is actually hard to beat in terms of carbon footprint. Their local-factory-to-local-showrooms business model is not only green but necessary, since every mattress Verlo makes – whether innerspring, gel foam or hybrid – is adjustable to your personal comfort. In fact, if your personal comfort changes, Verlo will alter its settings – in many cases for free – without affecting the lifetime (up to 15 years!) warranty. Oh, and if you want an adjustable frame for that mattress that allows the bed to raise into different positions, Verlo's got four options for that, too, and also does custom mattresses for boats, RVs, antique beds and more. 3080 Valmont Road, Boulder, 303.447.1154; 455 Weaver Park Road, #700, Longmont, 303.651.9024. verlo.com. INNOVATIVE OPENINGS Embracing the Colorado lifestyle means having a bear visit every once and awhile. This year, shades created by Innovative Openings deterred one curious bear from entering a private residence. “We had a customer that had one of our shades over their sliding glass door,” said Kevin Anderson, sales manager for Innovative Openings. “They left the door open by mistake. But because the shade was closed, the bear clawed at it and damaged the shade, but it deterred the bear from entering the house. We are always looking for new uses for our products.” Started in Boulder in 1980, Innovative Openings now operates a roller shade manufacturing facility in Louisville (as well as a Louisville showroom). BEST IMPORTED GOODS STORE

INDOCHINE HOME + GARDEN If the incredible taste seen inside the 10,000-square-foot warehouse store seems cohesive, it's because Indochine Owner Hugo Brooks has hand picked and directly imports the store's inventory of Asian furniture and other home goods. For 20 years, he's traveled the length of Asia (China, Mongolia, Burma, Indonesia, Japan and Thailand) to bring a variety usually only seen in major metropolises home to Boulder. Many pieces are antique – or antiques reworked to fit the modern lifestyle – with prices that don't break the bank. 7123 Arapahoe Ave., 303.444.7734, indochinehomeimport.com. Champion Windows makes their own windows at mile-high altitude to sell at 5,280 feet. Window manufacturers insert gas between the window panes (usually argon for double panes and krypton for triple panes) to help provide insulation for the home. When out of state window manufacturers build their product at lower altitudes, they have to wait to seal the panes until the glass arrives to Colorado in order to prevent the panes from shattering. “So by the time the product gets here, you have no idea how much [gas] is still left between the panes,” said Jeff Woodward, Champion Windows division manager for Northern Colorado. “By making the window here, we fill it up and seal it here.” Champion Windows also works with customers from start to finish, with all service and warranty work happening locally. “We make it, we install it, and no one else touches it but us,” Woodward said. “We’re able to offer it all at a lower price because we cut out the middleman cost.” Boulder County service area showroom at 5850 Byrd Drive, Loveland, 970.744.2595, championwindow.com. Runner Up: Alpen High Performance Products, 6268 Monarch Park Place, Niwot, 303.834.3600, thinkalpen.com.

BEST BOOKSTORE

BOULDER BOOK STORE A feast for the senses, Boulder Book Store anchors Pearl Street as an aesthetically pleasing wonderland of all things books. Since 1973, Boulder Book Store’s community hub has championed the independent bookstore spirit. For inventory manager Arsen Kashkashian, physically stepping into the bookstore changes the book-choosing process. “When you are able to come into a store and see all sorts of different things, you get customers recommending books to each other,” Kashkashian said. “Serendipity is important in people’s intellectual lives. I think it is hard to have that online in the same way as you can have it in the physical space around you. You can just sit at home in an echo chamber. But when you come to a bookstore, there are all sorts of different voices.” Kashkashian believes the Boulder community is a mosaic of people who appreciate the physical world. “People are [in Boulder] because they love nature,” he said. “So being in a beautiful space, a bookstore, resonates with these people.” 1107 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.447.2074, boulderbookstore.net. Throw this on top of a packed monthly class schedule, and it seems as though Mike’s Camera is bent on turning the entire city of Boulder into a troop of photographers and memory makers. “Photography for us is the world’s greatest hobby,” sales and operations manager Mike Dobson said. “I like to think of Mike’s camera as a big toy shop. In today’s market, you can capture memories on a phone. But everything I have [in the store] is something you will want to improve your photographic and memory experience.” In addition to training up new photographers, Mike’s Camera offers a multitude of options for printing services, including full business publication services. BEST MEN'S CLOTHING STORE

WEEKENDS A quarter century in business is an achievement for any Boulder business but especially for a clothing store. A couple of generations of men have come to depend on Weekends for clothing they end up wearing all week long. “We’ve been providing the best service in town for 25 years. My staff has been with me a long time,” said owner John Schopbach, praising staff members who have worked for 10 to more than 18 years at the shop. They have developed rapport with a roster of loyal customers who appreciate being helped by the same person who knows their taste in clothing. While great service is essential, John Schopbach said that selection also matters. “We shop all the markets to bring new styles to Boulder. The collection is curated,” he said, meaning the selection is unique to Weekends. 1200 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.444.4231, weekendsboulder.com Runner Up: The Regiment Shops, 2425 Canyon Blvd., Boulder, 303.443.2713, theregimentshops.com.

WAY TO GROW

STURTZ & COPELAND A lot has changed since Sturtz & Copeland’s greenhouses opened in Boulder in 1929. Numerous chain stores and supermarkets now sell plants, flowers and gardening supplies, but one thing remains the same: the service. That’s why Sturtz and Copeland has won this category often since Boulder County Gold began. “It’s the personal service and that’s because we have had the same staff for so many years,” said owner Carol Riggs. “We see the same customers through the years. We did their wedding flowers, bouquets when they have their first child, corsages for proms, holiday centerpieces and even funeral flowers.” “It means a lot to me to be recognized by our customers,” Riggs said. Tomato lovers have known for years that Sturtz is the best place to get plants that thrive in Boulder’s diverse growing conditions from the plains to the foothills. 2851 Valmont Road, Boulder, 303.442.6663, sturtzandcopeland.com. Runner Up: Harlequin’s Gardens, 4795 26th St., Boulder, 303.939.9403, harlequinsgardens.com

Since 2002 Way to Grow has established itself as a premier source for organic and hydroponic gardening supplies with seven stores primarily along the Front Range. The Gunbarrel location is a repeat winner of Boulder’s Gold awards. “It’s because we have a team of people who are passionate about growing and put customers first,” said owner Corey Inniss. He noted that his staff is ready to answer complex questions about lighting, nutrients, soil, watering systems, fertilizers, ventilation and pest control. “We make sure that customers are buying things that really solve their problems,” Inniss said. The staff is always available to help after sales with any growing concerns. 6395 Gunpark Drive, Boulder, 303.473.4769, waytogrow.net. BEST TREE NURSERY

THE TREE FARM NURSERY Experience counts for a lot at a tree nursery, and The Tree Farm has been providing the best trees suited to Colorado’s micro-climates since 1980. “These are trees we handpick ourselves – we get the cream of the crop. They are well-cared for with enough water and fertilizer and we space the trees out so they have room to grow,” said Mike Gittleson, a manager at the nursery. He credits the win in this category to staff members who average 15 years on the job. “They know how to help you pick out the right tree for the conditions in your garden. It saves money in the long run,” he said. 11868 Mineral Road, Longmont, 303.652.2961, thetreefarm.com. Runner Up: Harlequin's Gardens, 4795 26th St., Boulder, 303.939.9403, harlequinsgardens.com. 60

P.C.’S PANTRY FOR DOGS AND CATS Owner Mary Lee Withers founded P. C.’s Pantry in 1998, and it has been the go-to place – “the cat’s meow”– for dogs and cats ever since. Four-legged customers are welcome to join their guardians and roam inside PC’s and even enjoy a tasty treat. Withers says, “Everyone who works here is enthusiastic and likes their job and helping people with questions they have about their animal. We have been in business long enough that we know our customer base. If they have a problem, perhaps they need to change the food; we know the animal’s likes and dislikes. I am confident about the products we carry for our various animals. We’ve been in business so long that we have seen the puppies grow into dogs and the cats grow from kittens. We appreciate people supporting us all these years and enjoy seeing them in the store.” 2828 30th St., Boulder, 303.245.9909, pcspantry.com. BEST RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA STORE AND BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE

KARING KIND The store name says it all and accounts for Karing Kind’s double award wins, for Best Recreational Marijuana Store as well as Best Customer Service for any business in Boulder. “We just really have a hardworking staff that gives a higher level of service that makes loyal customers,” said Dylan Donaldson, owner of Karing Kind. He estimates that 60 to 80 percent of his recreational clientele are regular customers the staff knows by name. Having competitive prices and high quality products are important but with this brand new type of business, education is central to building those customer relationships, Donaldson said. “It’s important to teach customers how to use the product safely and enjoy it,” he said, adding that it helps that Karing Kind’s veteran staff have a lot of fun every day as educators. 5854 Rawhide Court, Boulder, 303.449.9333, karingkind.com. ASPEN EYEWEAR One of Boulder’s true legacy businesses is Aspen Eyewear which has won this category every year since the inception of the Boulder County Gold awards. Owner Heinz Ebner grew up working for his father who operated Crossroads Optical in Boulder for 35 years before opening Aspen Eyewear in 1986. His daughter Jennifer joined the business in 1996. “The more the business changes the more it stays the same. It’s still about quality service,” Ebner said. Dr. Michael Bollenbacher oversees the eye exams, screens for potential eye disorders and prescribes eyeglasses or contact lenses. Having Boulder’s only custom onsite lab and an extensive selection of frames means that Aspen Eyewear can typically deliver finished eyeglasses in one to three days. Customers often come in bearing a damaged pair of their favorite glasses which can often be fixed the same day. The staff stays focused on always treating customers better than they expect has creative familial loyalty. “I’m now helping the grandchildren of some of my customers,” Ebner said, chuckling in amazement. BEST GREEN PRODUCTS/SERVICES STORE

VERLO MATTRESS Verlo Mattress was proudly “green” long before that word came to symbolize a concern for the environment. “I’ve always been concerned about the materials we use and how they affect my employees and my own kids who sleep on the mattresses,” said Dick Sumerfield who has owned the Boulder outpost of a national group of bedding factories and showrooms for 28 years. Among the steps Verlo has taken in minimizing packaging, reducing waste and “outcycling” old beds into their reuseable components, Sumerfield said. Use only U.S.made foam to guarantee that no banned chemicals are present in the product. Mattresses are not sprayed with flame-retardant which off-gasses and can cause health issues. Instead Verlo is a national leader in utilizing wool, rayon, bamboo and other naturally flame retardant materials. And, Sumerfield added, the Boulder factory is solar powered. “I sleep better knowing we are doing the right thing,” he said. 3080 Valmont Road, Boulder; 303.447.1154, verlo.com. At PC’s one size does not fit all when it comes to dog biscuits. An in-house bakery prepares dozens of varieties of fresh biscuits all free of salt, sugar and preservatives. “We have vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free biscuits for different sizes and ages of dogs,” said Mary Lee who opened the popular store 16 years ago in Boulder. A steady flow of canine visitors come through the door every day to a warm welcome and a water bowl. “They learn to come to the counter and drop down for a treat,” she said. Owner-guardians can order a celebratory Bark’day Cakes in five flavors including liver. “We try to do our best, know our customers well and search for great products including local ones like Boulder Dog Food,” Lee said. While cats are also welcome few of them care to visit. “They mostly balk at travelling,” she said, but the business stocks an array of feline foods, supplements and toys. 2828 30th St., 303.245.9909, pcspantry.com.

HUMANE SOCIETY OF BOULDER VALLEY THRIFT AND GIFT SHOP The Humane Society Thrift and Gift Shop has been going to the dogs for 15 years. “Customers like coming in because we have good music and they can bring their dogs. We have dog biscuits at the door,” said Jennifer Cates who manages the mostly volunteer-run shop. “Boulder has always been good to us with donations,” she said, noting that the shop stocks everything from gently-used clothing and furniture to jewelry and some unexpected finds. “We’ve recently had a bocce ball set, vintage snowshoes, and 1960’s dresses and platform shoes available.
