Denver and the surrounding metro area is on the short list of cities expected to have a strong recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, BY TOM according KALINSKI to a report RE/MAX of Boulder by Moody’s Analytics. The firm analyzed the top 100 U.S. metro areas based on two primary factors: population density and educational attainment. Cities with low population density and high educational attainment have a good chance of strong recovery. Metro areas poised to recover quickly based on the analysis include San Jose, California; Durham, North Carolina; Austin, Texas; Seattle; and Minneapolis. In addition, cities that were fast-growing pre-coronavirus will

continue to rise, the Moody report says. “Denver and Salt Lake City are well-positioned to retake their crown as two of the fastest-rising metro areas in the US,” writes Adam Kamins, senior regional economist at Moody’s Analytics. He says dynamic recoveries may not be in the areas that are historically the powerhouses and instead may take place instead in areas not in a leading position in 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic changed everything. During the global financial crisis from 2007 to 2009, Kamin notes that big populated cities were the first to recover from recession. This time, however, cities that are large and densely populated are likely to be thought of as risky due to these factors. Other factors expected to have a positive impact include economies intertwined with major university – such as Durham, North Carolina and Madison, Wisconsin. This description fits Boulder, Colorado, as well. But, it’s a factor that

could also lead to peril, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to pressure college enrollment and finances. Moody’s analysis shone a light of positive expectations on unexpected cities, such as Des Moines, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. Kamins says that while these cities are somewhat isolated, both have a relatively strong financial services sector and a fairly well educated population. In addition, the farm sectors could benefit from global economic challenges. The most challenged cities include New York, Boston, Miami, Las Vegas and San Francisco. Tourist-heavy economies like Las Vegas, Miami and San Francisco are suffering from the shutdown on leisure and business travel and large gatherings. Plan to conserve water this year By Stacy Cornay Rocky Mountain Sod Growers LONGMONT – Don’t waste water. Recent downpours, in some areas of the state, have resulted in the Rocky Mountain Sod Growers (RMSG) once again stressing water conservation moving into the growing season. This message is important to the RMSG as work continues with the public and municipalities concerning the science of growing grass and actual water needs of turf.

“Water conservation is important in this state. We want to remind people that grass doesn’t waste water, people do,” said Marc Ruhl, President of the RMSG. Lack of education concerning the true water needs of turfgrass is contributing to continued water conservation issues, and increased water charges. Scientific research has clearly shown that inappropriate watering practices waste more water than any single plant group. If you are receiving water via

Mother Nature, you don’t need to apply additional water. This is very important, notes Ruhl. “Turfgrass water consumption has been studied for years. We know how much water grass requires. The challenge is to educate the public so that they don’t rely on myths and bad habits,” added Ruhl. The RMSG advises five basic rules to keep established lawns in peak condition, conserve water, protect the environment and CONTINUED - See Page 10. DAILY CAMERA / TIMES-CALL

THE LIGHTER SIDE

Coronavirus daze at home: Blame Cynthia for anything that annoys you updated 502b during the last pay period. She’s the type of person who is forever complaining about the smells wafting from the break room, demanding to know who heated up Indian food in the microwave. Well, I was wrong about imaginary Cynthia. She’s not a stickler for keeping things just so. In fact, she’s a flipping slob. Turns out Cynthia, like my husband, really likes jelly and honey, and gets it on the kitchen hardware and counter every single gosh darn day. Thus when I go to open the refrigerator in the morning, I get that distinct pleasure (before even having coffee!), of having my hand adhere to a gooey handle. Oh, joy. Cynthia is forever leaving dirty dishes in the sink, despite our house rule not to do so. We’ve been very clear with her on this,

yet the dishes still pile up even though we never actually see her eating. Who knows what that’s about? For some odd reason, Cynthia leaves my clothes strewn around our bedroom. I really don’t mind her trying on my clothes, but geez, why can’t she at least put them away? But really, why does she want to try on my PJs, ratty old sweats and dirty gardening clothes? So odd. I think one big problem Cynthia has is she’s a boozehound. Man, the woman seriously puts it away by the looks of our recycling bin. She’s not particular; she’ll drink anything and everything. Worse, we never see her so we know she’s drinking alone. We assume she’s depressed, probably because she misses harassing people in the office.

Perhaps the oddest thing Cynthia does is with our cat Poppy. She takes that poor old cat and rubs her all over our upholstered furniture and our favorite clothes, leaving globs of orange fur everywhere. This seems rather passive aggressive to my husband and me. Perhaps she does this after all that drinking alone. At the end of the day all my husband and I can do is shake our head in bewilderment at Cynthia’s behavior. It’s really good we have each other, because, really, Cynthia is just the worst. Colorado pose an increased fire risk and should be removed if they grow within 150 feet of your home. In Boulder County, land use codes require individuals who are constructing a new home in forested areas, or remodeling some existing homes, create and implement a Wildfire Mitigation Plan, which includes the creation and maintenance of effective defensible space. Other homeowners are encouraged, but not required, to create and maintain effective defensible space. Defensible space is an area between a house and an oncoming wildfire where the vegetation has been managed to reduce the wildfire threat and allow firefighters to safely defend the house. Use materials such as asphalt shingles, slate or clay tile, or metal roof coverings. Ensure roof-covering assemblies do not contain openings that allow firebrand entry. Install fire-resistive or noncombustible construction materials on siding and walls. Eaves should extend beyond exterior walls with fireresistive materials. Cover all vent openings to internal structure areas (attic, eave/soffit, foundation) with a corrosion-resistant, noncombustible wire mesh or screen that prevents firebrands from entering structures. Concrete block, cement walls,

or other fire-resistive materials should be used for foundation walls. Construct overhanging projections (decks, balconies, unenclosed roofs) of heavy timber, non-combustible or ignition resistant material. Minimize the size and number of windows on the downhill side of the house or the side most likely to be exposed to wildfire. Both the size and the type of materials used are crucial in windows and sliding-glass doors. Multi-paned glass or tempered glass is recommended. Wildfire does not recognize property lines. If you effectively mitigate your property, you may help save your neighbor’s home and vice versa. Wildfires can impact entire communities. Linked defensible spaces are a key community protection strategy. Having a defensible space around your home may also lower your insurance premiums. By Mary Lynn Bruny Early on in this pandemic – what feels like 437 days ago – I read an article that suggested that to reduce stress in your household, you should make up an imaginary roommate to blame the things your real roomie, significant other or family members do that annoy you. I loved this idea as when I was young my three siblings and I blamed every bad deed on our cat Meatball. She was a very, very naughty cat. My husband suggested “Cynthia” as our fictional roommate. To me, imaginary Cynthia is that person at the office who is a stickler for rules and who is ridiculously tightly wound. If a qualifying homeowner chooses, the homeowner can use a reverse mortgage to purchase a duplex, triplex or a 4 unit. The homeowner needs to live in one of the units as their personal residence, then they can rent out the units they don’t live in for income.

•

There are no restrictions on what the proceeds of the reverse mortgage can be used for.

•

A reverse mortgage is a nonrecourse loan.

Disadvantages of a reverse mortgage: •

The costs of getting a reverse mortgage are usually higher than a normal mortgage. There is a requirement for

•

Government assistance programs, such as Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income, might be affected if too much is withdrawn in one month. The local administrator for these programs should be contacted for individual details.

•

Reverse mortgages are complex, and the senior should get tax and legal advice if not fully understood. It is a good idea to use a loan officer who is local and specializes in reverse mortgages.

•

The reverse mortgage is a negative amortizing loan, which means the balance increases over time.

Be sure to contact a loan officer who is a Certified Reverse Mortgage Professional (CRMP) to see if this type financial tool would work for you. Conserve water (Continued) save money at the same time. New lawns may require special attention. Consult your local RMSG member turf supplier for additional information. 1. Watering in the early morning or late evening hours is more efficient use of water. When watering during the heat of the day, some of the water evaporates before it can be absorbed. 2. Don’t “set it and forget it”. As weather conditions change, adjust sprinkler settings to avoid over-watering. Check in to “smart” watering systems that save water. Your local municipality may offer incentives to purchase 10

such systems. “Recent rains provided a great deal of moisture in some areas, yet sprinklers were left running in the rain – this clearly wastes water,” notes Ruhl. 3. Check your sprinkler head coverage – don’t water sidewalks and pavement. Replace any broken sprinkler heads and adjust for maximum coverage. 4. Hand-watering may be required for areas that are under stress. Discoloring is a normal sign of stress. Keep in mind that Kentucky bluegrass, the most common lawn type in our area, is very resilient and is therefore a

good choice for this region. 5. Be sure to account for adequate water coverage in windy conditions, as high wind conditions are prevalent in Colorado. RMSG experts emphasize that bluegrass lawns will thrive on less than one inch of water per week during the growing season. This has been demonstrated through many scientific studies. Water needs change in the fall and winter. “Scientific research confirms that sod lawns, parks, and open areas cool the air while generating oxygen, reducing pollution, controlling soil erosion and

purifying and replenishing water supplies,” says Ruhl. “That is to say nothing of the aesthetic values of sod landscaping and how it positively impacts property values.” RMSG members are committed to providing top-quality service throughout the Rocky Mountain region and to staying current on the latest scientific trends to ensure that sod products remain beneficial to the environment while meeting the needs of the public. LAWN AND GARDEN

Rose care

There is a point in summer when gardeners can’t show fear. The growing season fills all of our spare time – we’re running full BY CAROL tilt, harvesting, O’MEARA weeding and Colorado State watering; there’s University Extension blooms to pick, mulch to replenish and insects to fight off. At a certain point I

wonder why I always smell like plants, but it’s not a bad scent and soon after washing I’m back in the plants again, getting covered in sap. The rush and frenzy can get overwhelming, so for stress relief, take time to stop and smell the roses. Our roses don’t have many problems here in Colorado compared to other places, but a few problems crop up each year for gardeners. Leaf cutter bees are a nuisance, cutting circular pieces out of the leaves to use in building nests. These small, mild mannered bees are grey with white stripes and, though the leaves with holes look alarming, the bees are good

pollinators and harmless. Spider mites can also be problematic, feeding on sap and reducing the vigor of plants. Thriving in hot, dry weather, their damage can cause leaves to look bronzed and drought stressed. Look closely at the plants for telltale webbing and if you have spider mites, drive them off by increasing humidity around the plant with mulch to hold moisture. Powdery Mildew, one of the most prevalent rose diseases, can show up in wet or dry weather. Conditions that encourage the fungus to develop are daytime temperatures near 80 degrees with higher relative humidity and nighttime temperatures around 60 degrees. Early signs are raised bumps on the upper surface of leaves. Later the fungus will distort leaves and buds and cover them with a whitish, talcum-like powder. Untreated plants eventually become stunted, and their leaves will curl and drop. To contain the problem, remove and destroy all infected canes and shoots. Spraying with sulfur dust is helpful but should not be used in hot weather since they can cause leaf damage. Rake up and destroy all leaves at the end of the season to prevent the fungus from spreading to other plants. Rust fungus can infect roses when

moisture levels are continuously high for two to three hours at temperatures between 65 and 70 degrees. First appearing as orange, powdery pustule-like growths on the underside of leaves, the rust becomes visible on the upper leaf surface as orange-brown spots; eventually leaves turn black. Remove infected leaves and canes at the first sign of rust. Black Spot shows up on leaves as circular dark brown spots with jagged edges. Leaves infected with black spot will turn yellow and drop. Wet weather and temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees promote the disease’s development. Black spot spores move easily and can be spread by splashing water, pruning shears, and gardeners’ hands. Since the fungus overwinters on fallen leaves and in lesions on canes, remove and destroy all infected foliage, particularly at the end of the season. To avoid transmitting black spot to healthy roses, rinse the pruning shears in a bleach solution after working on an infected rose. Carol A.
