Fair family of the year dedicated to 4­H Mom, daughter hope to spread word about program’s value

Fair family of the year? More like 4-H family of the year.

And for Sue Struthers and her daughter, 17-year-old Kenzie, 4-H is more than just a hobby, it is a way of life.

4-H, an educational program that provides leadership opportunities and hands-on projects for kids 8 to 18, has been a part of Sue Struthers’ life since she was a girl.

“I was a 4-Her when I was a kid,” Sue Struthers said. “My mother started a 4-H club in the early ’70s.

“I’ve been in 4-H all the years that I could be a member and then when my daughter was old enough to join 4H, we were back in 4-H again,” Struthers added.

FAMILY from page 5 But what started off as a first project for daughter Kenzie became a potential solution for numerous children around Boulder County who wanted to get involved but could not because of a lack of land.

“When we started 4-H with my daughter Kenzie, we started off looking at goats as a livestock project that I thought as a little kid she could handle,” Sue Struthers said. “We got angora goats, and Kenzie in elementary school and middle school would bring her friends up to the farm and they’d play with her goats and we would say, ‘Why aren’t you in 4-H?’ To a tee every one of them said, ‘We don’t have any land, I can’t do livestock projects, so I just don’t want to do 4-H.’” Seeing how many potential 4-H kids there were, Sue Struthers decided to take action.

“I talked with her (Kenzie) about the possibility of sharing her goats and at that time we met a lady from Gunnison who also ran a lease-a-goat program and she gave me information on how to do it,” Sue Struthers said. “So, we approached Boulder County to see if this kind of a thing would work here and after working all the details out with them we decided we could start a lease-agoat program.”

The program, which Sue Struthers said is a bona fide success, is only a start for many new 4-H members.

“Honestly, once they get in 4-H the majority of them find another project that they absolutely love and they either stay with me and lease-a-goat or they move on to something that they just love,” Sue Struthers said. “It (the program) is kind of my way of bringing kids into the 4-H program so that they can find things they love to do and just continue on.”

“That’s one of the things I’m very passionate about,” Sue Struthers said. “I think every kid should be in 4H in my own personal, humble opinion. It’s just so good for kids to be involved in 4-H because they learn so much from it. They learn how to work with their peers, they’ve got to be able to run meetings, they’ve got to be able to stand up and give public talks. They’ve got to be able to understand what judging is and how if they’re not chosen for first place, why, and to be a really good sport about it and to learn to do better.”

Above all though, “It teaches them responsibility. They’ve got to get up and put the effort forward,” Sue Struthers said.

“It’s going on my resume when I apply to CSU,” said Kenzie Struthers, who has a hearing impairment. “But I hope to use it to inspire more kids, especially those who live in urban areas, to get involved with 4-H and become more invested in the world and in leadership. I hope this can be used to inspire kids that are LGBT and disabled like myself to step into the spotlight and become leaders.”

Although she is not as involved as she used to be, Kenzie Struthers remains dedicated to the organization and still finds small ways to stay active in the 4-H community.

“I’ve never missed a year, actually,” Kenzie Struthers said. “I’m heavily dedicated to my club and the work I

do for the county. Currently, I am the treasurer of the Critters and Creations 4-H club and the vice president of the Youth Council and will be the treasurer for the 20172018 year. I’m currently the Outstanding Senior 4-H member for the 2016-2017 year, and an active participant in my county’s rabbit judging team.”

After decades of establishing ties with the proud organization, the family is honored that they are being recognized.

“It’s just very nice to be chosen as the family who has given a lot back to the community,” Sue Struthers said.

“It’s a pleasant surprise and an honor,” Kenzie Struthers added. But, she conceded, “I think it’s mostly my mom’s doing.”

Lady­in­waiting Sydney Postle wants to continue the work of Ashley Doolittle

Ashley Doolittle lived by a set of family rules. Keep your promises, share, say I love you, and think of others before yourself. Ashley, this year’s Boulder County Fair queen, always put other people before herself.

Ann Marie Doolittle, Ashley’s mother, recalled how much Ashley did to help those around her.

“In middle school, I can remember one day she said she needed to go into school really early,” Ann Doolittle said. “I said, ‘Well, why?’ and I guess the thing was that you would decorate kids’ lockers for their birthdays. There was a girl that I don’t think anyone was going to decorate her locker and she (Ashley) wanted to go in and decorate it for her. She was always looking out for kids that may not have had friends.”

Ashley Doolittle, last year’s ladyin-waiting, was found dead in June 2016, and her ex-boyfriend is accused of killing her. Last August, she was crowned as fair queen posthumously.

Sydney Postle, this year’s ladyin-waiting, knows firsthand how far Ashley would go for another person, even if that person was her competition.

“We were competing for a title that we both really cared about and she could tell that I was really nervous,” Postle said. “So, she started making jokes because she’s like, ‘Well, when you’re nervous, it doesn’t help to just sit there and be serious,’ so she and I were joking around, we’d tell each other like, the cheesiest jokes to make each other laugh and I thought that was just so kind of her, especially since I was way

younger than her.”

In this, one can see that Ashley’s kindness was not limited.

Whether it was in school or in the arena, wherever she went, Ashley hoped make difference.

“What she enjoyed most was how she could make an impact on the kids and how she could inspire them to be what they want to be,” Ann said. “At all the events she went to, that’s what she enjoyed the most was being able to talk to

the kids and talk to them about rodeos, talk to them about our western lifestyle, talk to them about horses.”

“When I would see her sign autographs, she wouldn’t just write her name on them, she would spend a long time writing and I asked her, ‘What do you write’ and she said ‘Oh, I write something different for each kid because I try to inspire them,’” Ann said. “... I remember one girl

taking it and reading it and getting a big smile on her face and showing it to her mom after she got it from Ashley.”

For her year as queen, Ashley had figured out a way to combine her drive to inspire the next generation with her passion for the title she held.

The Princess Program, implemented by her family and the community after Ashley’s death, was a platform where she could educate younger girls about what rodeo royalty entails and what it means.

“It’s a two-year program.

You’re lady-in-waiting the first year and then queen,” Ann said. “When you come in as lady-in-waiting, they ask that you come up with a goal that you can implement during your two years and that it will kind of be your legacy, something you leave with the program when you leave.

“She had the idea of a princess program to bring younger kids into the program so they can see what being ladyin-waiting and queen is all about so that when they get older, they can decide is this is something that (they) want to do,” Ann added.“Because it’s a big commitment and you don’t realize the commitment until you’re really in it and so she had put it all together, what the program should be, and then she was going to implement it her queen year.”

Though she was unable to see how her Princess Program would impact scores of young girls wishing to follow in her footsteps, Ann is sure that Ashley would have been proud, believing 2017 princesses Amber Nusser and Katelyn Matthies have already gained invaluable knowledge.

“From what they’ve told me, you know they’ve enjoyed it and they’ve gotten a lot out of the program,” Ann said.

“They’ve been great ambassadors for the fair.”

However, Ann insists she

“I had big shoes to fill stepping into the lady­ in­waiting position and I just hope I can help make people’s days better and change lives just like Ashley would have still been doing today.”

Sydney Postle lady­in­waiting would not have let the success of the program go to her head. Most likely, she would have been looking for the next way to help others.

Through the Ashley Doolittle Foundation, Ashley’s legacy of putting those around her first will continue through Ann and her family. By spreading awareness about teenage dating violence, Ann hopes to prevent another mother from going through what she has.

In addition to her work with the foundation, Ann will continue to fulfill her duties as mother to the queen through the end of the Boulder County Fair. A fair that was very near to Ashley’s heart.

“I know she was really, really excited,” Ann said. “It meant a lot to her. She was so honored to have the title and always looking at, you know, ‘What can I do to promote my fair?’”

Postle, looking toward her year as queen, knows that she has a lot to live up to.

“I really just want to continue to promote her legacy as well as the fair and rodeo,” Postle said. “I had big shoes to fill stepping into the lady-inwaiting position and I just hope I can help make people’s days better and change lives just like Ashley would have still been doing today.”

Firefighters team up for challenge Contestants will test their skills in five events

Five stories, 63 steps, 175 pounds, 106 feet.

These are just some of the measurements used to describe the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge coming to the Boulder County Fair on July 28-29 in the Exhibit Building Parking Lot. In a gamut of physical endurance, competitors will climb and descend a five-story tower, carry and hoist 84 combined pounds, travel 75 feet with a 140- to 240-pound hose, and drag the 175-pound dummy “Rescue Randy” 106 feet.

Founded by Dr. Paul Davis in 1991, the challenge is designed to showcase firefighters’ athleticism and fitness as they work through a series of tasks simulating real world firefighter skills.

Competitors will compete for the fastest times as well as a spot on the podium during the five main events, which include the high-rise pack carry, hose hoist, forcible entry, hose advance and victim rescue.

Molly Cropp, public information officer and firefighter for the Longmont Fire Department, is a first-time participant. Her team, one of two all-women teams representing the department, is ready to take on the challenge despite their late entry into the competition.

However, planning times to train is no easy feat as the women have differing schedules.

“It’s a little bit difficult because there’s different shifts and our team consists of people on all three shifts [which] just makes it a little bit challenging to go out and practice,”

Cropp said Instead, the women are training individually for their respective events. Despite already exercising extensively for her job, Cropp is focusing on getting in shape for her climb up the five-story tower.

“I personally have been running stairs with weight because that’s the biggest component,” Cropp said.

“We’re in full gear with a pack and a 42-pound hose pack that you have to carry. I only weigh 135 pounds so it’s just a lot of weight to go upstairs

While the team has had little time to prepare, Cropp said they have a plan to help them maximize their course time.

“I think ... the biggest strategy, kind of with any team sport is, if you’re smooth, you’re faster,” Cropp said. “So getting those transitions to be smooth, even if you’re not quite as fast in the actual event, if those transitions can be seamless, it will end up being faster.”

Fair expects a bumper crop of kids’ activities From dinosaurs to a juggling farmer, plenty to entertain

This year’s Boulder Country Fair will feature a wide variety of kid and family friendly activities. New this year is Krusher the Strolling Dinosaur, an 18-foot prehistoric creature that will wander the fairgrounds Aug. 1-4.

Other activities include the Future Farmers of America Petting Zoo, an area where kids can pet sheep, goats, cows, rabbits and chickens all while learning about where their food comes from.

Another plethora of petting will occur at the Pet a Bunny Wagon rolling into the Exhibit Building Aug. 1-6.

Looking for something more

hands on? Aurora Organic Dairy will put on a kids’ corral featuring agriculture education displays, a sandbox, coloring, a roping how-to, and a stick-horse rodeo.

The fun goes on when Airborne Gymnastics brings its kids ninja obstacle course to the fair from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 29.

“Here at airborne we offer ninja zone classes which are obstacle training, with gymnastics, martial arts, and freestyle movement, and we’re going to be taking our circuit to the fair,” said Feliz Gutierrez, the community events director at Airborne.

“It’ll be an interactive obstacle course where kids will be able to jump, do movements, do a balance beam, do some basic tumbling, in the ninja circuit,” added Gutierrez.

From 10:45 to 11:15 a.m. Aug. 3, the Longmont Museum will have kids’ dinosaur activities. The same day, Jeff and Paige take the stage with music about the outdoors and ecology from 10 a.m. to noon.

The proceeds from the annual event will go to the MaxFund Animal Adoption Center.

MaxFund, a no-kill nonprofit shelter, was founded in 1988 by Dr. Bill Suro and his wife Nanci. Seeing the need for medical attention and care for ownerless animals, the Suros established the organization to help the “unadoptable” animals.

“We’re Denver’s only nonprofit true no-kill shelter,” Kathy Gains, event coordinator for MaxFund, said. “So our mission is to save the lives of cats and dogs that no other people want or that people suddenly cannot have.”

Rockin’, boot­scootin’ and blues on stage

Get ready for an eclectic blend of blues, rock, rhythm and blues, and country at this year’s Boulder County Fair.

Fairgoers will be able to see 25 performers in a week of music spanning from Friday, July 28, through Sunday, Aug. 6. The lineup — which includes local favorites and nationally recognized bands such as The Rock Bottom Boys — will be performing for free in the fair garden.

During the jam-packed week of entertainment, spectators can dance the night away on the garden dance floor, all while supporting local music.

Bringing their energetic and crowdpleasing performance to the fair for the first time is Denver-based group Premium Diesel. The seven-piece band, founded in November 2014, is excited to play a public event from 8 to 10 p.m. Aug. 4.

“Since ... the bulk of our work is private events, a lot of people don’t get to see us,” Premium Diesel cofounder Tim Buckman said.

“That’s why we are now going to the summer festivals and things like that so people have an opportunity to see us.”

Although the performances are tailored to their clients, the band is sure to have a little something for every country fan at their performance.

“The thing that I would say for us is we bring a really energetic country show,” Buckman said. “It runs the gamut as country music has expanded, especially in recent years.

We do everything from Johnny Cash and Garth Brooks or something like that, you know more classics, all the way up to the Florida Georgia Lines and the Jason Aldeans, you know pop country.”

stage, Colorado based Lightly Toasted will up the ante with a unique blend of blues, jazz, and country-rock from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug 5.

Ray Schumacher, a guitarist and vocalist for the band, explained Lightly Toasted’s aesthetic.

“We’re kind of more on the blues side of music,” Schumacher said.

“We do some old Grateful Dead songs, we do original music ... and some country as well.

“As far as the classics, we play more obscure, I would say the versions that other bands don’t do.

So like we’ll do ‘Can’t You Hear Me Knocking’ by the Rolling Stones,” Schumacher added.

While Lightly Toasted began as a primarily blues band called “Bluesberry Jam,” over 25 years, the band has changed their name and their style to fit with their changing tastes.

“I think the unique blend may have

come from the fact that we started off as a blues band and it just evolved by throwing in originals and kind of mixing it up a little bit,” Schumacher said.

With such a wide range of music, fairgoers will not have a difficult time finding something they enjoy during this year’s fair.

Other bands in the lineup include Face, Girls On Top, That Eighties Band, Joe Cool Band, The Long Run, The Weld County Ramblers, and Billy Shaddox.

In addition to their other shows in the garden, The Rock Bottom Boys are playing the Farm to Table Dinner in the picnic area from 5:45 to 9 p.m. July 31.

Yellow Designs Team expects audience to flip over BMX show

Spectators will get to see group perform signature stunts

High-flying BMX stunt group Yellow Designs Stunt Team will be wheeling their way into the Boulder County Fair on Aug. 2.

For $5, spectators to the show will get to see the nationally recognized group perform some of their signature stunts and routines.

The group has numerous highprofile clients such as the NFL, for which they’ve put on halftime shows, and Coca-Cola, for which they’ve performed at corporate

events. But they began their careers not on bikes, but in a booth.

Brian Gavagan, owner of the team, explained that Yellow Designs was originally a clothing company that sold t-shirts, hats and stickers at BMX events until the team realized they could be something more.

“We started to really feel like it would be great to make ramps and put on shows of our own,” Gavagan said. “Instead of being at events, creating our own events.”

After booking their first big gig for the Denver Nuggets halftime show, the group learned what it meant to perform professionally.

“It entered us into the world of doing shows and realizing there’s a lot of details and stuff that you

There will be plenty to hold kids’ attention at the 2017 Boulder County Fair.

Appearing for the first time at the Boulder County Fair is the Fantastic Farmer Phil. Featuring a mix of agricultural education, yo-yo tricks, mentalism, magic, juggling and comedy, The Farmer Phil Show is a must see for kids and parents.

Arthur Fratelli, better known as The Amazing Arthur and head of Amazing Arthur Entertainment, said that Phil is sure to bring a fun and fair-friendly experience to Boulder County.

“I started The Farmer Phil show about five years ago because I’ve had so many fairs ask for an agricultural show, so I’ve got about three Farmer Phils that go around the country and they do a magic, juggling, agricultural based show,” Fratelli said.“It’s all entertainment, but we talk a little bit about what it means to be a farmer. We do some magic tricks with food, things like that, and we talk a little bit about the states that we perform in and their agriculture market.”

The show may be based around agriculture, but the performance has some very traditional roots.

“It’s kind of a modern-day interpretation of the old-fashioned

vaudeville show,” Fratelli said. “So all of these skills are kind of related to each other, the magic and the juggling. But what they all fall under the umbrella of having in common is, it’s all entertaining and it’s all skill based.”

Although Farmer Phil is a solo performer, the audience will have ample chances to participate.

“His show will be very interactive with the audience,” Fratelli said.“There’s a lot of volunteer opportunities for kids to help out with the magic and the juggling.

“Phil is an awesome juggler, he’ll be juggling lots of things at once his finale is really funny. He’ll have two kids for the finale and kids eat apples while he juggles them. And I should clarify juggle the apples, not the kids,” Fratelli added.

While Fratelli said that you can see juggling and magic on television or online, nothing beats seeing the performance in person.

“It’s something you can’t see live very often,” Fratelli said. “To see it live, you have to go to a fair.”

Farmer Phil will perform in the Fair Garden Entertainment Tent and the Exhibit Building Aug. 3-6.

Using an example of cats that have kidney disease, Gains explained what kinds of animals the shelter takes in that other shelters may not.

“They require medication and IV fluids every day, and those costs make them unadoptable to many people. So it’s often medical care requirements or if the dog is considered destructive to property, it might be harder to find him a home,” Gains said. “Those kinds of things can make animals considered unadoptable, and we don’t put those animals down. If we have to, we find another no-kill sanctuary or we put them in an appropriate foster care environment as opposed to euthanizing for those types of reasons.”

As a nonprofit, MaxFund relies on donations to keep its operation going. Events such as the Lucky Mutt Strut help offset the costs and increases the shelter’s visibility.

“It helps raise awareness of Maxfund,” Gains said of the 5K walk and run.“We don’t spend a lot of our dollars on marketing, so events like this allow us to make the shelter and our mission known to the community.

“We increase our volunteer base with this kind of event and it’s also in a large part giving back to the community with something fun that people can go out and do and support MaxFund,” Gains added.

Although all dogs and people are welcome at the event, a few lucky mutts stand out.

“There’s a lot of MaxFund alumni involved,” Gains said. “As opposed to using our current shelter dogs, people bring their own dogs out to the Lucky Mutt Strut so many of the dogs walking

Linda DeBell, an event coordinator for the Boulder County Fair and a major player in the strut this year, has participated in the event for the past 21 years with her furry friends from the shelter.

“That’s where my four animals came from,” DeBell said. “We adopted them and have watched the facility grow from a single room to a large beautiful building.”

While the shelter has moved into bigger facilities on 10th Avenue and on Galapago Street in Denver, the shelter’s needs have not changed and the mutt strut is essential to meet them.

“Our hope is to ... make a dent in some of the pharmacy bills, surgery bills, for these animals that don’t have an owner,” DeBell said.

Echoing the sentiment of DeBell is Gains, who believes the event is made even more significant by MaxFund’s mission of rescuing every dog or cat regardless of ownership status.

“We consider any animals that comes to MaxFund to be lucky,” Gains said.

The Lucky Mutt Strut will take place in the picnic area of the Boulder County Fairgrounds at 10 a.m. July 30. Registration is $20, and the proceeds will be donated by the Boulder County Fair to MaxFund. At 11 a.m., dog yoga will be offered for free at the finish line. Although Cropp’s team is eager to compete, she is looking forward to showing people what the Longmont Fire Department’s got.

“Most of us as firefighters are fairly competitive as it is, so to be able to go out and represent our department and also have this competition, it’s pretty cool to be able to do that especially in our city,” Cropp said.

“We want to go out there and

show Longmont and Boulder County, ‘Hey, look at all these women on the Longmont Fire Department,” Cropp said. “That was a big reason I kind of wanted to do it.”

Jason McNally, a Longmont firefighter and co-founder of a competing team, is also using the competition to show the public what firefighters are capable of and encourage other departments to get involved.

“We would like to increase the participation amongst not only our department but surrounding departments as well as, you know, put up a respectable time on the course,” McNally said.

Unlike Cropp and her teammates though, McNally’s team has won several regional competitions during their years of competing together.

After a hiatus due to a lack of local competitions, the men are back

together to represent the Longmont Fire Department. More than anything though, McNally and his team are going to compete to win.

However, if Cropp and her team’s strict training schedule is any indication, McNally will have some stiff competition.

“We have no idea how we’ll do, how we’ll compare,” Cropp said.

“We’re just going to go out and do the best we can.”

In 2011, Yellow Designs took their show to a national stage when they were featured on season six of “America’s Got Talent.” The team was eliminated in the semifinals, but Gavagan said that the show did not capture what the show was like in person.

“I think the tough part for our show is that it’s difficult for the TV cameras to capture the energy of the whole picture,” Gavagan said about the team’s last performance on the show. “It was awesome for grabbing one person doing something, but if you were in the audience you’re watching the show as a whole.

“I could tell that the audience was so stoked about it, and the crowd noise when we were done was amazing. I thought, ‘Wow we hit it out of

the park,’” Gavagan added, “but it didn’t translate that way on TV.” Although they did not win the grand prize, Gavagan said that the team did get something out of their brief appearance.

“By working with the TV networks in Hollywood and seeing how a multimillion-dollar show is produced, it gave us all a bigger vision of what we were doing and realize that our little show that started off at elementary schools with a small PA system and no ramp had now transformed into a national stage with multiple ramps and back up dancers,” Gavagan said. “We knew how to do it now.”

Despite the fame and adding more “wow” factors to their performances, Gavagan still finds enjoyment in the

reactions of the crowd.

“My favorite part of the show is the beginning and the end,” Gavagan said. “There’s a buildup at the beginning when the kids are just so excited to see somebody jump the ramp.

They’ve seen it sitting there and they’re just like, ‘What’s going to happen, how fast do they have to go to jump that?’

“The finale (is) where everyone does their biggest tricks and you know, go upside down or do spins. It’s always the most exciting part of the show,” Gavagan added.

From hops, plants, grabs, pivots and barspins the team has something in store for everyone.

“A lot of people see a lot of exciting things on the internet, but it’s not very often that you get to see the stuff that’s not on the computer live and in person, up close and personal,” Banghart said.

“We get the stage for 30-45 minutes and we’re going to do our best to show people something they haven’t seen before,” Gavagan said.
