Every year, the fair adds new events and entertainment such as extreme jousting, drone racing, and Ninja Warrior Nation to appeal to our diverse community while at the same time preserving long-time favorites like the rodeo and demolition derby.

Ever since the first fair in 1869, the Boulder County Fair has offered an educational, talent-filled event that is enjoyable for urban and rural audiences alike. True to its mission, the Boulder County Fair promotes the importance of agriculture in our community and encourages youth to get involved through 4-H and FFA. Princesses Westenbroek and Groshong wore matching chaps that resembled the ones that Doolittle used to wear. They were green and white and the words “Ashley’s princess” were embroidered onto the right leg and “Boulder County Fair” was written on the left leg.

Postle competed against Doolittle for the lady-in-waiting title a couple of years ago.

She recounts when they were simply talking about the interview portion of the competition.

Due to the nature of the competition, they had both missed a couple of the judges’ questions and were feeling nervous.

However, Doolittle’s laugh and sense of humor helped them both feel less anxious.

“She was just very funny and outgoing,” said Postle with a smile, “I

As lady-in-waiting, Doolittle wanted to create a princess program for younger girls. But was never able to see her dream come true. After her death, the Boulder County Fair and royalty program worked hard to make this program a reality as was named after Doolittle.

The Ashley Doolittle Princess Program saw its first two princesses last year and the county fair committee plan to continue this program.

Every year, a handful of judges will decide the next year’s royalty members. The judges, usually former royalty members, Boulder County Fair board members and other community members, will be announced shortly before the event begins.

Contestants will be judged on a prepared speech, modeling, a written test, an interview and horsemanship. Young girls applying for a princess position will not have to present their horsemanship skills but will otherwise be subject to the same tests. And unlike the lady-in-waiting position, the princesses only serve for one year.

Groshong, who is a high school student from Boulder, believes that her position as a princess helped her learn to be more professional around others. And while she enjoyed her time meeting new people and the experiences from this past year, she will not be returning to the royalty program due to her busy schedule.

However, she does believe that being a princess can be step toward becoming a lady-in-waiting and queen.

Teaching lessons in royalty Young women share their passion for county fair

Having a positive role model is an important aspect of growing up.

Role models inspire children and help them become better people.

Some girls look up to celebrities, others look up to athletes or superheroes and some look up to rodeo queens.

For former Boulder County Fair Rodeo Queen Morgan Wallace, this was exactly why she started the Queen for a Day event.

“I wanted to encourage girls at a young age to grow up with a love of rodeo in their heart and the dream to one day be the Boulder County Fair

Queen as well,” wrote Wallace in an email.

Growing up, Wallace attended the county fairs with her family and was heavily involved in 4-H. She showed horses and pigs, her family was nominated as Fair Family of the Year and she ran to be a rodeo lady-inwaiting. Wallace is currently living in Laramie, Wyo., and serving as a rodeo queen there.

Like many ladies-inwaiting and queens before her, Wallace had to work on a project that could make a positive impact on the 4-H and county fair community.

“It was my goal to leave a legacy on the program by making it better when I left,” she said.

Every year, the rodeo lady-in-Waiting is placed in charge of the Queen for a Day event.

This is to help them prepare for their bigger

role as rodeo queen.

Like Wallace, Kaitlyn Faye grew up on a farm and participated in 4-H throughout her childhood. As this year’s ladyin-waiting, she was left in charge of planning the event while her royalty peers were tasked with giving her support.

The event, which will take place on July 29, is aimed toward young girls aged three to 12.

Faye explained that many young girls believe that rodeo queens only have to ride around on a horse during the fair and the purpose of this event is to show them what else queens have to do.

There, children will have a chance to experience what it is like to be a rodeo queen. They will get to decorate a real horse with glitter, decorate a t-shirt have their hair styled and makeup done, prance around the

area on a toy horse, and even go through a mock interview process. They will be asked questions such as “what is your favorite color?” and “what is your favorite thing about the fair?”

Young girls participating in this event will also be invited to ride on the float during the parade.

They will have the opportunity to color and decorate banners that will go on the float and ride behind the county fair royalty members.

Just like how Wallace worked on her project while she was a member of the rodeo royalty, Faye is also working on a project that she hopes will also have a lasting impact.

Her passion for agriculture inspired her to create a booklet to educate younger people about the importance of agriculture and how it can affect consumers.

Youths prepare to showcase their projects Fair buyers help fund 4-H

4-H youths showcase their annual projects at the Boulder County Fair from Aug. 3 through Aug. 12. The projects range from livestock and product sales to a fashion review.

In the U.S., there are more than 6.5 million young people involved with 4-H in ever y state.

In Colorado, 4-H is affiliated with the state’s land-grant university, Colorado State University. The organization encourages community members to pair with youth members to complete a year-long project.

A call to arms at the county fair

Arm wrestling competition will be a first for Boulder County

The Boulder County Fair returns to Longmont for its 148th year this August. In addition to the traditional events, this year’s fair features a seven-division arm-wrestling competition.

The competition takes place Aug. 11 and begins with opening round registration at noon. There are five men’s divisions and two women’s divisions. The fair itself begins Aug. 2 and ends Aug. 12.

The event is sponsored by Arm Wrestling USA, an organization that hosts arm wrestling tournaments at county fairs across the country and is the largest amateur arm-wrestling competition. Steve Simons, the owner of Simons Entertainment Group, the parent company of Arm Wrestling USA, believes that arm wrestling gives everyone a chance to become an athlete.

“Anyone can compete, and it’s staged with an arm wrestling cable and referees. The crowd involvement is incredible. You see a knock out every 30 seconds.”

The Boulder County Fair event is the inaugural Rocky Mountain Arm Wrestling Championship and is free to all fair-goers. The winner from each event receives bragging rights as well as a national ranking. Those who reach the quarterfinals will have an opportunity to earn a position in the Grand

Finale at the Arizona State Fair in November.

Arm Wrestling USA’s goal is to create an event that is inclusive of everyone from all walks of life. The addition of arm wrestling to the Boulder County Fair is part of a bigger initiative to make the fair more inclusive and entertaining for a variety of fairgoers.

This year’s competitions start at the Calaveras County Fair in California and conclude with the finals in Arizona. There are eight competitions total, and Arm Wrestling USA expects approximately

250 people to hold national rankings.

Laura Boldt, the Boulder County Fair coordinator, said that she hopes to make armwrestling an annual event at the fair, provided there are enough competitors. Past events have drawn competitors from all demographics and ages.

The men’s divisions consist of featherweight, lightweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight. The women’s divisions consist of lightweight and an open division. Each division is classified by the

weight of the competitor.

While everyone is welcome to compete, Arm-Wrestling USA asks that children refrain from competition. However, there will be a photo opportunity if any children want their picture taken on the podium with a referee.

Simons began his arm-wrestling endeavors in 1974 with the World Professional Arm Wrestling Association.

With the hopes of bringing arm wrestling to the masses he then sold the company to CBS Sports, Six Flags Amusement Parks and Miller Brewing Company. The help from these organizations made it possible for Simons to retire knowing that his legacy will live on.

Now as he comes out of retirement Simons is bringing back the entertainment of arm wrestling without the competitive edge. By making the events open to the public and in such a public venue, Simons hopes to make everyone an athlete without the television coverage.

“Men, women, wives and husbands all have a chance to become an athlete on a Saturday,” he said.

Adams said he is not yet sure whether any female jousters will be at the Boulder fair, but said that he trains men as

Adams said he was interested in equestrianism and jousting since he was young, and the fact that he’s been able to make a career out of it is a dream come true. He’s grown interest in the sport, and said

that being able to host The History Channel’s reality show Full Metal Jousting gave him the ability to introduce the sport to a large number of people.

To him, the most enjoyable part of jousting is the teamwork it requires with his equine partner. He said work-

ing in partnership with a horse creates a special bond that is very rewarding.

The Knights of Valour Extreme Jousting event will be held on from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7 in the outdoor arena. Tickets range from $3-$13 and can be purchased online or in person.

Nacho Men will make their Boulder County Fair inaugural performance at 8 p.m. Aug. 8. Most of the band members have been together for close to 15 years, and band member Tom LeRoux attributes the band’s success to their positive energy.

“We love performing and we love making people smile,” said LeRoux. “We love seeing people dance and we love seeing people laugh. The best thing anyone has ever said to me about the band is that we bring joy and that’s what we want to do.”

In Boulder County, there are approximately 200 adult volunteers and 575 youth participants. With the goal of “making the best better,” kids ages 8 through 18 are welcome to participate in any 4-H program that interests them. Brenda Kwang, the extension agent for 4-H in Colorado, regards the fair as one of the best links between the community and 4-H. “Our goal is teaching responsibility, teaching different life skills that they will take on and learn,” said Kwang. “As a 4-H member, they will learn leadership, responsibility, community by caring for their animals they have to take care ever y day and being respectful and responsible to other members.”

One of the projects showcased at this year’s fair is the livestock sale. 4-H youths raise and take care of their animals throughout the

entirety of the year before putting them up for sale at the fair. Community members are encouraged to purchase the animals for meat, donate toward the animal or buy the animal to give back to the child.

The livestock sale begins at noon Aug. 11. It will consist of poultr y, beef, pigs, goats, dair y, rabbits and sheep. The animals are sold per head to the highest bidder. The proceeds from the livestock sales go back towards the child for a college education.

In addition to the livestock sales, 4-H will be selling a wide variety of goods and products. Ten items will be sold, including goat milk, cakes, best photo and baked goods.

All products will be judged by a panel at the fair and then placed for sale. The product sales will begin at 11 a.m.

Aug. 11, and all proceeds go directly back to 4-H youths.

Those who aren’t willing to spend money at the fair are welcome to support 4-H in their other events throughout the week. There will be a fashion review as well as a showcase for general projects such as shooting sports.

Community involvement is at the core of 4-H’s foundation. The work students and community volunteers put into these projects yearround help teach young people skills such as communication, global awareness, leadership and community.

4-H hopes that these skills will help young people become better citizens, family members and community participants.

“4-H is a great opportunity for youth to become better citizens and there’s lots of opportunities for community members to get involved and come and participate to see what has to happen at the fair,” said Kwang.
