The fine-dining mainstay is also a destination for wine lovers who appreciate an award-winning selection of some 4,000 worldwide varietals and pairing recommendations from an acclaimed staff. Brasserie Ten Ten is a French twist.

“Fresh, fresh, fresh.” That’s the Taj in a word that bears repeating, says Kamala Ghimire Rai, who co-owns the locally embedded eatery with her husband. The reason this Indian restaurant has lasted (and many laurels) is storied: It continues to evolve with one family’s life – and an entire community’s desires. Bucking the trend of traditional, sometimesheavy Indian dishes, Ghimire Rai reinvented the all-day Indian buffet after exploring healthier, fresher yet still affordable options to feed her autistic son. Boulder County locals praised her inclusion of steamed vegetables, brown rice and popular spreads like chicken makhani made with hand-ground spices.

Best Mexican EFRAIN’S MEXICAN RESTAURANT AND CANTINA

The best Mexican food comes from families with roots deep in handmade dishes. We’d hedge to guess that’s why each Efrain’s location – tied together by brothers from Northern Chihuahua – are regularly ranked among the best authentic Mexican restaurants in Boulder County.

“We come from Mexico and my mom is the best cook,” says Jorg Gomez, owner of the original Lafayette location. Efrain’s chicken chimichanga – made with super-fresh poultry – is a top seller, as are the fajitas, chile verde and rellenos. Best Italian AND Best Ambiance CARELLI’S RISTORANTE ITALIANO

Italian food is comforting all on its own, but add in a warm and welcoming environment and Carelli’s opens like an opera of flavor and feeling. But Owner Greg Carelli won’t take full responsibility for the restaurant’s success for its more than 26 years in service. He praises Boulder’s loyal community – and the good people who work for him.

“My employees are the heart of Carelli’s. A lot of my customers have built relationships with the employees, which helps foster a family environment.” As for food, classics like the Polo alla Carelli, sautéed chicken with caramelized broccoli served over pasta, is simply divine. And watch for newcomer Salmon Pappardelle – Atlantic salmon with ribbons of pappardelle pasta, local Hazel Dell mushrooms, Roma tomatoes and baby spinach in a white garlic sauce. Best Vietnamese/Pho Cuisine CHEZ THUY VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT Dining at Chez Thuy is like sinking into a chair at the family dining table and talking to mom about what’s for dinner. It’s personal.

“I put a lot of love into it,” says Owner Thuy Le. “I go with the tastes that will work for my customers. But whatever I come up with, they seem to like!” Vietnam’s soothing pho soup is a soft spot for Boulderites who relish Le’s secret spin on the ubiquitous dish. “My customers say ‘Your pho, I can’t find it anywhere else!’” Le says. “No one can replicate it.” Stir-fry is another favorite, but nothing beats pho for people in the know. Le says, “Old people, young people and college students – they all come in on a rainy day for pho and fried rice.”

“Aloy” means delicious in Thai, and that’s no boast at this modern take on tasty southeast Asian cuisine. “We pride ourselves on the authenticity of our food,” says General Manager Chantal Johnson of the family-owned operation. For example, the rich and satisfying kao soi, a coconut curry egg-noodle soup, is hard to find even in Thailand, and the classic drunken noodle is rumored to be the best in town. A crew of top-notch chefs works diligently to source high-quality, organic meat and produce, especially from local farms whenever possible. You can taste the effort. Boulder County is home to lots of vegetarians, but KT’s BBQ loves being part of the “counterculture,” laughs Melanie Thibodeau, one of three owners of the Memphisstyle barbeque joint. “We have a small, consistent menu that’s made with care,” Thibodeau says.

“But there’s also the customer service side: We have very deep connections with our customers.”

Mountain Sun just keeps shining rays of goodness on casual, approachable food and drink in Boulder County. While the menus at both locations are loaded with comfort cuisine, the burger is always a standout. “We use a third of a pound of all-natural, vegetarian-fed Colorado beef with no antibiotics or steroids,” General Manager Jessica Candaleria says. “That’s a great place to start to make an outstanding burger.” The popular sweet-and-savory Date Night Burger is topped with goat cheese, roasted poblano peppers, hickorysmoked bacon and date puree. To keep it interesting the restaurant also runs burger specials. Founder Pete Turner did it all on purpose – the lively atmosphere, the rocking tunes, the flowing beverages, the superior burrito – and in Boulder it just stuck. Illegal Pete’s slogan “natural food, natural people” is true, too. You can come as you are for breakfast, lunch or dinner and always find intentionally sourced foods like all-natural, antibioticfree, hormone-free meats from Creekstone Farms and all-natural, preservative-free tortillas for Pete’s notorious Mexican nosh.
