May Wah is going to set a generous plate of irresistible, delicious Chinese food before you, and you will eat it, leave stuffed, and strangely want to do it all again a couple of hours later. They’re that good. May Wah leaves the pretense to the posers and concentrates on good food. Let’s start with starters: Spring roll, chicken skewers drizzled with peanut curry sauce, chili hot wings, pan fried dumplings, to name a few. Slurp some egg drop or seafood tofu soup, prepare mentally, and choose your main course. Are you gonna hit the Moo Shu pancake shrimp or Kung Pao chicken? Perhaps it’s best to go all out with Happy Family: A combination of chicken, beef, shrimp, imitation crab meat, scallop, broccoli, snow peas, water chestnut, carrots, celery, bok choy in a brown sauce. That’s left to your discretion, but if Chinese food isn’t quite your thing, May Wah also does Thai and Vietnamese. They will get you, one way or another. You’d be forgiven if you lost count of how many times Snarf’s has topped the sandwich crowd in these awards. What’s the secret? No secret. At Curry-n-Kebob eclectic Indian restaurant, you know you’re in good hands. The operators are the former owners of Colorado’s Taj Majal restaurants and Boulder’s own Maharaja. So they have vast experience with what excites palates among Boulder’s open-minded, globally aware population. The Kahn Family melds a rich mix of tastes from Northern India and their home country, Bangladesh. When a restaurant has been in business for six years we say that’s a decent run. But how about 60 years? That’s how long the Gondolier Italian Eatery has been serving up spaghetti and meatballs in Boulder. Well, pasta, and famous chicken Parmesan, homemade pizza and those mouth watering garlic knots, too. It just goes to show that some savory favorites never go out of style. “We have so many great customers that are like family to us,” says owner Nelson Kugel of the restaurant’s steady emphasis on downhome hospitality that’s as good as the food. Pizza-by-the-slice is always going to be a favorite among the late-night-loving college set. But anyone who’s on Pearl Street at odd hours – from wedding parties to concert goers – will appreciate Pizza Colóre’s simple, affordable, quality Italian fare. It’s a 20-year tradition. This Boulder a la New York-style ‘za brand has consistently delivered on what customers of all ages want – and stood the test of time because of it. “We are still the cheapest place on Pearl Street,” says Owner Dan Shaffer. And with rent going up and upscale food courts going in, that’s a hard business to sustain these days. But Shaffer does it by hand, day after day, making divine original pies for the diehards. The all-time bestseller? We’re not sure what’s more fitting in a town with a storied past as a hippie haven than a restaurant called Flower Child. Apparently many agree, as this fresh spin on healthy food takes home the coveted Best New Restaurant award. But the real beauty here is that there’s no judgment. You don’t need to dine with flowers in your hair. There’s something for everyone “vegetarian, vegan, paleo, or just hungry,” according to the restaurant’s ethos. Simple dishes are at the heart of this cheery space that will leave you wondering if the chef just plucked your carrots from the garden. Take in the avocado toast, organic kale salad, spicy Japanese eggplant and Mother Earth grain bowl in all their glory. Sure, it’s mostly veggies here, but you won’t leave hungry. And one last thing we won’t hide from the hippies: Flower Child is a chain. But Boulder is the first location in Colorado. If you know perennial standout Frasca, you may not be surprised that its sister brand Pizzeria Locale took top honors in the Best Pizza category. Both have absolutely nailed food consistency, in this case authentic Neapolitan-style pizza and top-notch customer service. “We really focus on making the guests’ experience special every time they come in,” says Pizzeria Locale-Boulder general manager Patrick Tran. In one of America’s most intensely bicycle-obsessed towns, what does it take to be the best shop, and still in business since 1982? That’s what has helped make CrossFit Sanitas a double-category winner, providing the kind of supportive and encouraging atmosphere that serves both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts. Not every college club is devoted to Latin, or Dungeons and Dragons. Since 1953, the University of Colorado’s Program Council has provided students with the opportunity to get directly involved in rock ‘n roll shows, movie premieres and events on the same caliber as professional venues in Denver. Skylar Scharer, spokesperson for the student organization, says the best part of the Program Council – besides a legacy that has seen campus shows by everyone from the Rolling Stones to the Red Hot Chili Peppers – is the chance for students to get direct experience in event management. “Most of our stuff is handled in-house, and it’s really great, as people can do everything from work security at events to helping with PR and marketing, or being a part of our street team,” she says. That includes both major events, such as the annual Welcome Fest and the occasional high-profile stadium show, to assisting with operations at Program Council’s two on-campus venues, Old Main and Club 156. Nowadays, when every second ad on TV or the Internet is for dirt-cheap eye wear, folks might be tempted to go the do-it-yourself route. Will this be the year that perennial Boulder alt-rock-country faves Gasoline Lollipops make their long-awaited rise to the national stage? According to bandleader Clay Rose, 2019 sees a whole bunch of opportunities to build a much larger audience, yet still try to remain faithful to all those local fans. “We’re definitely starting to break out of the Front Range and go statewide, and we’re also building a market in Alaska,” Rose says. “But we’re still definitely a Colorado band, Colorado-loved and Colorado-supported – that’s what give us our juice.” The Alaska angle, buoyed by recurring shows at the annual Salmonfest, where they appeared just after headliner Brandi Carlile in 2018 (and are even higher on the bill this year), has definitely broadened the Lollipops’ fan base. Rose says national exposure through Spotify and other online channels, mixed with a healthy schedule of other festival dates, might be just the thing to catapult the Lollipops. And with a new album in the works – “it’s an adventure of sorts, with some evolution and changes to our sound,” he notes – Rose says the band is totally ready for an out-of-character chart-topper, as happened to Alaska-bred Portugal.The Man. While we might conclude that the martial arts are largely devoted to gracefully beating the living hell out of others, Boulder’s Ki Aikido offers a different approach – teaching a new generation of participants about Aikido, a non-competitive practice that emphasizes mind over body. Aikido, which literally means “a way of harmony with universal energy,” sees its practitioners transforming an adversary (or training partner’s) energy into a roll, with graceful motion that’s unlike other martial arts. Aikido in Boulder dates back to 1977, when sensei Koichi Kashiwaya founded a Front Range Aikido organization; sensei Abel Villacorta officially formed the Boulder dojo in 1999, having been given the support of Kashiwaya and sensei Russell Smith, who has been actively involved in Aikido in Colorado since 1979. The Peruvian-born sensei Villacorta is a fourth-degree black belt and has helped share the art and culture of Aikido with a generation of Boulder students – and a new center for the dojo, located near the 55th and Valmont post office, will provide more space for both Aikido and Japanese yoga. Kids are also crucial to the experience, with mixed child-parent classes for students as young as 4 years old, plus kids’ and teen classes. Are you a balcony kind of BT fan, or do you love to get up-close and personal with the band right next to that very up-close and personal stage? The legendary Boulder Theater allows a variety of experiences, much in keeping with its eclectic lineup of national and international performers, films and local events. But it’s amazing to think that the vibrant and historic venue has come close to entirely disappearing a few times over its long run, from its beginnings in 1906 as the Curran Opera House. It got an Art Deco makeover in the 1930s and looks very much the same as it did in 1936, with elegant tile bathrooms that still seem like they’re straight out of The Shining. Despite extensive renovations in the 1980s, things were touch-and-go until 1994 when the Boulder Theater got a new lease on life. Nowadays, it stands as one of the Front Range’s top venues, hosting everything from speed-metal to country and comedy performances, plus the annual Boulder International Film Festival and the Banff Film Festival. For nearly a decade, the theater has been managed by the same folks who run the Fox Theater, allowing a wider spread of entertainment choices. 2019 marks the 47th Annual RockyGrass Festival. Brian Eyster, vice-president of communications for the small independent company, said, “RockyGrass is our ‘traditional’ bluegrass festival. By Colorado standards that means acoustic instruments and very few drums. But the festival still presents a breadth of bluegrass from newgrass/jamgrass (Sam Bush, Infamous Stringdusters) to modern progressive acoustic music (Punch Brothers) to legends (Del McCoury, Peter Rowan). “A huge part of RockyGrass is the overall experience: the community, more than 2,000 campers in every campground in Lyons during the festival, tubing down the St. Vrain River next to the stage, the tarp scene, the pickin’ circles, the kids playing in the river, the generations of families, the rich traditions, the emphasis on sustainability. There’s a magic in this place that inspires people to return year after year, regardless of whether they’ve ever heard a note of bluegrass music. RockyGrass creates hundreds of

When they started Satellite Boardshop 17 years ago, Raul Pinto & J.G. Mazzotta were sophomores in the CU environmental design program. Now their staff has worked together for almost 100 years of combined experience – and they’re still actively skate and snow boarding. Pinto says their specialty is service with a smile. They are experts at tuning skis and snowboards and they repair and put together skateboards and give lessons in how to enjoy the sports.
