A

t the Women’s Clinic of Northern Colorado we want to support women and their families as they transition into parenting. We offer a multitude of classes to empower parents; as well as a weekly support group for women to find their community of mamas. The following hints are provided in hopes that we can help women focus on the fact that what babies need more than anything is a present and self-aware mama who is gentle with herself and grounded.

HINTS TO NAVIGATE THE EARLY STAGES OF MOTHERHOOD: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Listen to your instincts, and figure it out as you go. Do less Often it really is “just a phase” See your changed body as your new superpower Treat yourself with more love, patience, and compassion." Don't sweat the small stuff Find perspective Don't be afraid to ignore advice Get back into exercise at your own pace Sleep Trust yourself Take a lot of pictures Don't try to be the perfect mother Stay nourished Know that it's okay to do things differently Remember that nothing goes as planned Find a community of mamas Remind yourself that you know what you're doing Don't forget to take time for your partner Know you're doing amazing

TO P 1 0 B A B Y NA ME S BY LUCY ROBINSON | October 19, 2020

S

ophia is officially the reigning queen of girls' names for the 11th year in a row! While the top 10 didn't change from last year, most names moved up or down. Aaliyah outdid Amelia and Mia, and Aria slipped behind Isabella. Most notably, Riley jumped up six spots. Riley is also the only name in the top 10 that doesn't end with the feminine “ah” sound. We'll keep an eye on girls' names ending with a "y" next year.

Baby names are always a mirror of the times. Changes in the 2020 list reflect a year of loss and political divisiveness. Kobe shot up 175% after Kobe Bryant, one of the greatest basketball players of all time, lost his life in a tragic helicopter accident alongside his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna (up 216%). On the social and political fronts, Kamala (up 104%) and Liberty (up 12%) rose in popularity, while Karen and Chad declined by 13% and 12% respectively.

As for boys' names, Liam took the number one spot for the second year in a row. Caden dropped three places, Elijah overtook Grayson and Lucas, and Noah gained traction. Muhammad fell from the top 10, edged out by Mateo – which could be the influence of Lionel Messi, the international soccer superstar whose young son Mateo has his own legion of fans, or the popular show Jane the Virgin (Jane's son is named Mateo).

Here are the top baby names of the year, contributed by more than 520,000 BabyCenter parents. We combined spellings of similar names to find their true popularity. For ideas beyond the top 100, check out our baby name inspiration video, baby name polls, and themed name lists.

HOW TO SELECT SAFE TOYS FOR KIDS

C

hildren look forward to opening birthday presents and gifts for special occasions. However, there are some things to keep in mind to make sure gifts are safe and appropriate.

To help you make savvy selections, PlaySafe.org from The Toy Association, the premier site for toy safety information, is offering the following guidance:

•

Avoid shady sellers: It can be tempting to shop around. However, that low priced toy may not actually be “a good deal.”

“U.S. toy safety laws are considered the gold standard. Before reaching your home, a toy is subjected to over 100 different safety standards and tests and must be certified compliant by 14 |

of 2020

an independent testing laboratory,” says Joan Lawrence, The Toy Association’s “Toy Safety Mom” and senior vice president of standards and regulatory affairs. “The cheap imitations and counterfeits available online from illicit sellers haven’t met these same safety standards.” A recent survey commissioned by The Toy Association of U.S. parents who are their household’s primary toy purchaser revealed that 71 percent of parents whose kids get holiday gifts from grandparents who shop online aren’t completely confident that their elders know how to ensure that toys are from verified sellers. In the same survey, 19 percent of parents report that their child has received a knock-off toy that was bought online. Parents should talk to gift purchasers about sticking with verified

sellers. This includes buying directly from brand websites or by following provided links to official retailers selling a brand’s products. For those who do choose to shop through lesser-known online sellers, checking out reviews and a product’s legitimacy before making a purchase is essential.

•

•

Follow age recommendations: Playing with toys above

a child’s age grade can lead to misuse and possible injury. However, 26 percent of parents in The Toy Association survey report that their kid has received a toy which was meant for kids who were older. Pay special attention to age grading on product labels and encourage family members who are also toy shopping to do the same. These are not merely suggestions, they’re firm recommendations made by safety experts based on childhood developmental stages. Find this information on labels and in product descriptions. If it’s not available, that’s a red flag and could mean the toy is illicit.

Pay attention to toys labeled 3+: Toys labeled 3+ may

contain small parts that can be a choking hazard for children under 3 or kids who still mouth toys. While these items often

of 2020

make great gifts for older kids, they should be stowed away after playtime to keep younger siblings safe. Not sure if a toy is small enough to be hazardous? Consider getting a Small Parts Tester to test toys and other small household objects.

•

Monitor playtime: Kids find ways to play with things that

are not toys, including objects that can be very dangerous if accidentally swallowed (e.g. batteries, high-powered magnets, decorations, medications). On the other hand, there is a federal law that requires batteries in toys to be kept inaccessible, thanks to the use of a locking mechanism. Keep dangerous, non-toy items out-of-reach and monitor children during playtime.

For additional toy safety information, tips and resources, visit PlaySafe.org. “Don’t let your child unwrap a safety hazard,” says Lawrence. “By shopping smart you can ensure safe play.” (StatePoint) PHOTO SOURCE: (c) fizkes / iStock via Getty Images Plus

KEEP KIDS SAFE FROM MEDICINES AROUND THE HOUSE THIS COLD AND FLU SEASON

D

uring the cold and flu season and amid the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be more medicines in homes being used to treat all kinds of symptoms. It is important to remember that you can keep curious kids safe by keeping medicine up and away and out of sight and reach.

•

Never leave loose pills on the counter or tables and keep medicines in child-resistant containers until right before taking them. To a young child, pills can look like candy, and it’s important to keep them out of children’s reach and sight.

Approximately 50,000 young children are brought to the emergency room each year because they got into medicines left within reach, according to recent statistics published in the Journal of American Medical Association. This cold and flu season could present some additional hazards.

•

Keep young children safe by putting all medicines carried with you, including those in purses, bags, pockets, or pill organizers, out of their sight and reach.

•

More than 80% of grandparents say they keep their medication in the same place as usual when their grandchildren visit their house, and 72% keep them in their purse or bag when they visit their grandchildren, according to a University of Michigan poll. Whether you’re a grandparent or another visitor to a home with children, don’t be shy about asking for a safe place to put your medicines (including those kept in purses, bags or pockets) that’s out of reach and sight of curious young kids.

•

Save the Poison Help number: 1-800-222-1222, in your home and cell phones so you’re always prepared. Make sure that babysitters, older children and frequent family visitors have the number too in case there’s an emergency when they’re in charge.

“Families with their curious children are spending more time at home together to help stop the spread of COVID-19. It’s imperative that all medicines are kept up and away and out of sight and reach to avoid accidental ingestion and an unnecessary trip to the emergency room,” says Anita Brikman, executive director of the Consumer Healthcare Products Association Educational Foundation. The Up and Away campaign, an initiative of PROTECT, in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association Educational Foundation, aims to prevent accidental ingestion of medicine by educating families about how to safely keep medicine out of the sight and reach of young children. They’re advising parents and caregivers to follow these tips this cold and flu season and beyond: •

20 |

One-half of exposures involve children accessing medications that had previously been removed from original packaging, according to a study published in the Journal of Pediatrics. Whether you’re at home or away, keep medicines in child-resistant containers. If you must put medicines in other containers, such as pill organizers, only do so if they’re child-resistant.

HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED A CHIROPRACTOR FOR KIDS?

M

ost people recognize the value of chiropractic care for adults, but a healthy spine and nervous system can benefit everyone! Kids experience stress just like adults do, although the stressors can be a bit different. Stress causes subluxations – areas of interference in the nervous system – that cause disturbance in the function of the rest of the body. Here are some examples of how all age groups are confronted with these causes.

How early should I have my child checked and what good is it if their body is constantly changing? Birth is the best time to start. In 1993, a German medical doctor, Heiner Biederman published his research1 which showed that many newborns showed signs of upper neck injury from the birth

process. He stated that if the misalignment were not corrected, it could cause many different health problems later in life. Keeping a child subluxation-free allows their body to function properly while they are growing and changing. If a child has a subluxation, proper growth of the spine is compromised, potentially causing abnormal curvatures. Subluxations put stress on surrounding joints and may cause degenerative changes later in life. Are there signs that I can look for that may indicate the need for a chiropractic examination for my child? Infants may have difficulty latching while nursing, frequently spit up, be constipated or keep their head turned to one side. Subluxated toddlers may be clumsy, irritable, have difficulty sleeping at night or have frequent illnesses and/or ear infections. As children grow older, they may suffer with headaches, “growing pains”, bedwetting, frequent stomach aches or constipation issues. Chiropractic for kids has been shown to be highly effective for numerous childhood conditions such as colic, asthma, ear infections, allergies, bowel problems, scoliosis and many more. Restoring proper function to the body through proper nervous system function early on in life gives a child the best chance to not only resolve an existing problem, but also avoid problems later in life. Kids are not simply small adults! Dr. Patricia has completed a 3 year postgraduate Diplomate in Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics and has helped many children with specific health concerns. If you have any questions about chiropractic for children or would like additional information, please do not hesitate to ask. Biedermann H. Das KISS- Syndrom der Neugeborenen und Kleinkinder.
