When our pets leave those little surprises, rain washes all that pet waste and bacteria into our storm drains. And then pollutes our waterways. So what to do? Simple. Dispose of it properly (preferably in the toilet). Then that little surprise gets treated like it should. Scoop the POOP

There is no poop fairy. Pet waste washes into our storm drains and pollutes our rivers. When it rains, the potential exists for abandoned pet waste to wash down storm drains and into our streams, rivers and lakes without being treated at our wastewater treatment facility. Pet waste can contain bacteria that threaten the health of animals and people, especially children. Pet waste contains nutrients that encourage excess algae growth making water cloudy and green and unattractive for swimming, fishing, and recreation. When pet waste is washed into lakes and streams, the waste decays, using up oxygen. Low oxygen combined with warm temperatures can kill fish and other aquatic life.

Why do we need clean water?

Having clean water is of primary importance for our health and economy. Clean water provides recreation, commercial opportunities, fish habitat, drinking water and adds beauty to our landscape. All of us benefit from clean water—and all of us have a role in getting and keeping our lakes, rivers and ground waters clean.

What’s the problem with pet waste?

It’s a health risk to pets and people, especially children. It’s a nuisance in our neighborhoods. Pet waste is full of bacteria that can make people sick. If it’s washed into the storm drain and ends up in a lake, stream, the bacteria ends up in fish. People who eat those fish can get very sick. For example, the waste produced by Seattle’s dogs and cats is about equal to the waste produced by 50,000 people. Unless people take care of it, the waste enters our water with no treatment.

CLEAN WATER TIP: How can you get rid of pet waste and help keep our waters clean? Here are some options. Scoop it up and flush it down the toilet. That’s best because then your community sewage treatment plant or your septic system treats the pet waste. Seal the waste in a plastic bag and throw it in the garbage. Bury small quantities in your yard where it can decompose slowly. Dig a hole one foot deep. Put three to four inches of waste at the bottom of the hole. Cover the waste with at least eight inches of soil. Bury the waste in several different locations in your yard and keep it away from vegetable gardens.

for your Pet

What should you include in your kit?

By Jane Snyder, Pet First Aid Kits Pet owners have lots of accoutrement for their pets: food and water bowls, leashes, collars, beds, toys, treats, brushes, nail clippers, maybe even a jacket. But one important tool is probably missing: a pet first aid kit. The items below will help with treating basic emergencies like wounds, low blood sugar, allergic reactions, and ticks. Whenever your pet has an emergency, the best thing is for you to remain calm and seek care from a veterinarian as quickly as possible. Being prepared before there’s an emergency may just save your pet’s life. The American Red Cross offers online pet first aid classes, first aid manuals, as well as a free app for your devices. Along with medical supplies, having your pet’s vaccination May 26, 2019

records, a photo of your pet and their microchip number may prove useful. Having a list of emergency phone numbers at your fingertips could be a lifesaver. Include in your kit a list of numbers for a 24 hour veterinary clinic, your veterinarian, an emergency contact for a friend or family member, and especially the ASPCA Pet Poison Control Hotline: 1 (888) 426-4435. Experts at the hotline are available to answer questions and provide guidance 24 hours a day for a $60 consultation fee. (There is a separate number for human poison control, which is not appropriate for pets.) Here’s a list of items to include in your pet first aid kit. You may even want to make two – one for the house and one for the car. If you spend time hiking in the back country, check with your veterinarian for other recommendations for your adventures.

Assemble the following in your animal’s first aid kit and store in a plastic bin or canvas bag: • Rolls of cotton bandaging • Rolls of 2- or 3-inch gauze • Gauze pads • Cotton balls • Cotton swabs (Q-tips) • Adhesive tape • Non-stick (Tefla) bandages • Vet wrap (self-cling bandage wrap) • Cold/hot pack • Antibiotic ointment • Sterile water • Rubbing alcohol or wipes • Hydrogen peroxide • Ear wash • Scissors • Splint/tongue depressors • Tweezers/tick removing tool • Petroleum jelly • Syringe or eye dropper • Thermometer (normal temp for dogs 100 – 102°F and cats is 99-102°F) • Styptic pencil or powder (staunches minor bleeding) • Collapsible bowl • Spare leash • Flashlight • Disposable gloves • Muzzle • Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for allergic reactions (ask vet for proper dose) • Famotidine (acid reducer) • Betadine (antiseptic) • Corn syrup or glucose paste (for low blood sugar) • Blanket • Pillow case (to confine cat to treat him) • Plastic bag (to keep bandaged foot dry)

Let’s be honest…there’s good reason to believe our societal dependency on social media these days may well be down to dogs. Who can resist the lift from an adorable puppy meme, after all? The term “man’s best friend” has long been ubiquitous when it comes to honoring the bond between dogs and their humans, but is it deserved? Both science and common sense say yes. History depicts special relationships between humans and dogs going back centuries, as early as nomadic hunters and wolves. Over the years, studies have compiled that highlight the positive impact our canine friends can have, from the important work of therapy dogs and service dogs to the fitness and companionship gains of simply setting walking routines with a beloved pet. According to a 2015 study published in the journal “Science”, a real emotional connection occurs when dogs and their people look at each other, with “love hormone” oxytocin associated with maternal response to newborn babies rising in both species. But we don’t need studies to know that, do we? People love their dogs. It can come as a shock, therefore, that cruel commercial dog breeding continues to thrive. “It is estimated that 80 percent of Americans own at least one dog,” says Michele Burchfield, Marketing Coordinator for grassroots nonprofit Harley’s Dream, which was 4

established in 2013 to create awareness and educate the public about puppy mills. “We believe that if all dog owners knew the truth about puppy mills, they would no longer exist.” Harley’s Dream founders Dan and Rudi Taylor were passionately involved in the fight against puppy mills, as well as support for rescue and senior dogs, as owners of Harley, their compelling little one-eyed chihuahua. Once freed from the brink of death in a filthy cage of a puppy mill, Harley defied the odds to become a strong spokesdog and educational advocate. When Harley

passed in the spring of 2016, the Taylors committed to his enduring legacy, taking a more activist role by founding Harley’s Dream to raise awareness and end puppy mills. “Ask people on the street, ‘do you support puppy mills’, and you’ll almost certainly get a resounding no,” Burchﬁeld says. “But people often don’t realize, there are so many ways we can unintentionally support puppy mills through the products we buy, and the pet stores we frequent. When my daughters were younger, we’d go to the mall and stop at the pet store to see all the puppies. Looking back, I know now I was

missing an opportunity and even educating them wrongly, unaware of the puppy mill connection with so many pet stores. One simple way we can make a difference today is by educating our children at a young age.” According to Harley’s Dream, Puppy mills are a major source of the overpopulation and euthanization crisis in America today; current canine welfare laws are not adequate enough to protect the breeding dogs living in puppy mills, where they are subjected to deplorable, torturous conditions. If just thinking about cruelty to our canine friends dampens your day, we get it. Here’s a better bit of news: you can make a difference. Even better, you can have a whole lot of fun in doing so. Why not start by marking your calendars for Berthoud’s 7th Annual Hops and Harley at Fickel Park hosted by City Star Brewing in downtown Berthoud, Saturday, June 15 from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Leashed dogs are welcome to attend. The Importance of

Cats have surpassed dogs as the most numerous pets in America’s homes,1 yet they don’t see the veterinarian as regularly as dogs do. In fact, less that half of them see a vet yearly.2 Why is this? There are multiple reasons people don’t provide their cat proper regular care, but the only one that matters is why you personally may not have gotten your cat in for regular checkups. Here is why Dr. Stephanie Buchholtz DVM at The Cat Doctor in Loveland — and the American Association of Feline Practitioners— feels cat guardians should be committed to getting their cat in a minimum of once yearly3:

YEARLY CHECK UPS FOR CATS

1. Cats age faster than humans. Did you know they are the equivalent of 15 human years at their ﬁrst birthday? The next calendar year adds another nine equivalent human years. Thereafter, it is roughly four human years per cat year, but the point is: you wouldn’t wait almost a decade between check-ups for your human family, why do it with your cat? 2. Cats often hide illness until it is too late. Trained professionals can ﬁnd issues earlier — when there is often much that can be done to alleviate disease. 3. More than half of cats are overweight, and that is a scary statistic. Excess weight is just as bad for them as it is for humans, making them prone to unnecessary arthritis, liver problems, diabetes, and more. Your vet can help design a program for safe and effective weight loss for your pet.

4. As with humans, caring for your cat preventatively can help avoid medical emergencies. Regular examinations help us detect conditions and diseases much sooner, before they affect your cat’s health signiﬁcantly, saving your pet unnecessary pain, and saving you money.

5. Your cat has just as many teeth as most adult humans. Dental disease is the most prevalent disease in cats age three and older. Dental disease can be hard to pick up on from an owner’s standpoint, and your cat could be in a high level of discomfort without you realizing it. Teeth are always checked at an annual visit. Getting your cat safely to the veterinarian shouldn’t be a challenge. An appropriate cat carrier is a must. Placing your cat in the carrier should not be stressful for either of you. Getting your cat accustomed to its carrier isn’t hard, it just takes

a bit of time and foresight on your part. WHO IS

Harley?

On the brink of death after spending 10 years in a cramped, filthy cage in a puppy mill—where he’d lost an eye when his cage was powerwashed—Harley was finally freed. Harley immediately received medical care and found love with his new forever family in Berthoud, Colorado. To the surprise of his veterinary team, the strong-spirited Chihuahua continued going strong in spite of medical conditions which were the result of his years of suffering. Following his rescue, Harley worked tirelessly educating people about puppy mills. He personally participated in the freeing of 760 mill dogs, plus raised funds that brought freedom to hundreds more. Sadly, Harley passed away March 20, 2016, but his legacy lives on. He continues to inspire hope and confidence in people of all ages who are able to relate to his lessthan-perfect appearance, and he continues to be the voice for the hundreds of thousands of dogs still living in cages in puppy mills.

A Fun Event Hosted by Larimer County Humane Society All paws on deck—that goes for the human kind and the canine kind. Every year Larimer County runners and walkers lace up their shoes and leash up their pups for the annual Fire Hydrant 5K event– funds raised help the Larimer County Humane Society care for homeless pets. The shelter takes in animals rangomg from ﬂuffy cats and dogs, to exotics and barnyard animals, up goat size. In total, the fundraising efforts help over 6000 strays, orphaned and injured animals. The shelter’s goal is to raise $110K, says Kara Pappas, director of development & community relations. 10

“Our wonderful event sponsors have in fact underwritten the entire event, meaning that every dollar raised through registration or pledge raising will go directly to supporting Larimer Humane Society’s work for the animals.” The money helps pay for medications, spay and neutering procedures, and supplies like cat toys and treats that volunteers use when hanging out with those curious felines. As for adoptions, before animals get the greenlight to be placed with families, a vet needs to evaluate their health which is yet another cost where the fundraiser helps to offset those expenses, said Pappas. “It pays for the team that evaluates our animals to make sure the animals are safe to be placed in the community,” Pappas said. She went onto say, some pets need pricey surgeries if they have a broken a bone or may have been hit by a car. Beisdes the 5K itself, the event provides lots of family fun even if

you don’t plan to run or walk, said Pappas. It’s worth a trip down to the event just to check out all the dogs and the wacky activities created by their human counterparts. “There are Loveland Police K9 unit demos, dog contests, the skippy scarfdown, which is a peanut butter eating contest for dogs, a puppy pageant, musical mutt matts, which is like musical chairs with your dogs,” Pappas said. It’s mostly adults who sign for

Handling all those activities could not be done without the 200 volunteers who give their time and energy, said Pappas. Volunteers take on tasks like helping at the registration table, assisting with contests and activities, event photography, handing out water to racers—to things like being a course marshal that keeps runners and walkers on track while dolling out loads of gratitude and high ﬁves for their participation in the event. A lover of animals, Jason Jambor is a Fort Collins resident who spends loads of time as a volunteer in Northern Colorado. When he’s not helping out at the Fire Hydrant event or on its committee as community outreach lead volunteer, Jambor can be found volunteering at Colorado State University vet school. He spends about three hours a week in various volunteer roles and an additional 5-10 hours during the months in other various capacities, he said, And he has maintained

this level of volunteer output and commitment for about four years. “This will be my fourth Fire Hydrant 5K event,” Jambor said. Wondering why he gets so involved? Good question. “It’s fun and because I love animals,” Jambor said. “Also because I get a lot out of it emotionally. Caring for dogs and cats is very rewarding and it works into my life.” Jambor contemplated going to vet school when he ﬁrst moved to Northern Colorado. But he gets his animal ﬁx by giving time in a

variety of volunteer activities—not to mention his regular job working at a horse stable. At the event, Jambor runs around and gets a lot done, he said, from directing trafﬁc to assisting the DJ and helping the volunteer staff. “I help the DJ with power and set up on the day of the event…and by keeping volunteers happy and answering their questions.” At the end of the day, volunteering at the event is just a lot of fun, Jambor said. “My favorite part is seeing all the dogs that come to the event…I like seeing people out in the community doing fun things with their

dogs. I am amazed at how much this community loves animals,” he said. He also noted that event goers enjoy watching the Loveland Police K9 Unit strut their stuff.. Jambor said it’s interesting to watch how the police officers handle the service dogs. Unlike unruly teenagers, these German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois give no talkback when the officers give their commands. When officers call the dog off, known as releasing from the target, which is a person padded up in protective gear pretending to be a criminal, these dogs obey like no one’s business. So if you have nothing better to do, take some time to check out this fun event where the community celebrates the love of animals while supporting a good cause.

TIPS FOR BOARDING YOUR PET

Changing their diet often causes loss of appetite, loose stools and/ or vomiting. Some animals can get a little stressed when separated from their owners so by not changing their diets, this reduces some uncaused stress.

2. Bring in a piece of clothing worn by you.

When your animal smells it, they will be reminded of you during their stay.

3. Supply their bed, blankets and favorite toys.

Comfort is found when your animals are surrounded by “their own” toys and beds. We do not allow other animals to play with them to prevent protectiveness etc but when they resume to their own dwelling for the day/night, they will have something to remind them of home when they see their favorite belongings.

4. Bring your animal in to visit the location before the stay.

A pre-stay visit helps your pet feel more at home when they come back the next time. Instead of being a completely new experience, they smell familiar smells, see familiar faces and hear familiar sounds.

5. Socialize your pet regularly.

If your pet is well-adjusted to other animals and people before a stay, that will help everyone involved. When your animal is comfortable with others, the stress is reduced for everyone.

(BPT) - With the warmer weather, you’ve likely kicked your travel plans into high gear. Whether your dog is coming along for the trip or staying behind, here are four ways to be prepared for a family vacation, keeping your furriest family member in mind.

PRACTICE PRECAUTION.

Take your dog on a trial run. If traveling by car, see how your pet handles shorter rides before a long trip. Short rides can be to the park to create a positive association with car time. For any ride, make sure to feed your dog a few

hours before the trip to prevent car sickness. If traveling by plane, understand your airline’s pet policy so you’re fully prepared. Before arriving to the airport, take your dog on a relaxing walk to get rid of any pre-ﬂight jitters, and to get them ready for an in-ﬂight nap. WASTE NOT, WANT NOT Picking up after your pet has a bigger impact than you may think

By Linda Bond for We Love Pets Joe Chaplin is Loveland’s Stormwater Quality Specialist, a title he doesn’t take lightly. For 16 years, his job has been to protect and maintain the quality of streams, rivers and other vital water resources. The City’s stormwater drainage system connects directly to the Big Thompson River and other waterways so protecting stormwater quality keeps Loveland healthy and preserves wildlife habitat. According to the City of Loveland’s website, “Having clean water is of primary importance for our health and economy. Clean water provides recreation, commercial opportunities, fish habitat, drinking water and adds beauty to our beautiful Colorado landscape. All of us benefit from clean water - and all of us have a role in cleaning and maintaining our lakes, rivers and other waterways.” 14

More than 60 percent of water pollution comes from everyday behaviors like oil leaking cars, fertilizers and pet waste. “All of those pollutants are fixable if people will change the way they do things,” Chaplin said.

Bacteria is worse than the bite According to US Environmental Protection Agency, dogs can harbor lots of bacteria and parasites — including harmful pathogens like giardia and salmonella. A single gram of dog waste contains an estimated 23 million bacteria and 20 to 30 percent of the bacteria in water samples from urban watersheds is attributed to dog waste. Just two to three days of waste from 100 dogs can contribute enough bacteria, and phosphorous to close 20 miles of a bay-watershed to swimming and shellfishing, according to the U.S. It also can get into the air we breathe:

a study of air samples in Cleveland, Ohio, and Detroit, Mich., found that 10 to 50 percent of the bacteria came from dog poop. “Dog waste is a health risk to pets and people, especially children,” Chaplin said. “Unless people take care of it, the waste enters our water with no treatment. It’s a nuisance in our neighborhoods, it’s unhealthy and unsightly. Pet waste is full of bacteria that can make people sick. If it’s washed into the storm drain and ends up in a lake or stream, the bacteria can get into open wounds and people can get sick or even die.” America’s 83 million pet dogs produce some 10.6 million tons of waste every year. According to the American Pet Products Association, 68 percent of US families own a pet. That means that in Loveland’s 27,153 households there are approximately18,464 dogs. That’s a lot of pet waste. “I do see more people picking up after their dogs. Most humans consciously want to do the right thing,” Chaplin said. “But in nature preserve areas, or places where there aren’t pet waste stations, not all people are picking up after their dogs. We are slowly making an impact, but we want to make it easier for people to do the right thing.”

Evidence indicates that cannabinoids may represent a new class of anti-cancer drugs that inhibit cancer growth, delay angiogenesis (the formation of new blood cells that feed a tumor), and stall the metastatic spreading of cancer cells. CBD has long been proven to have anti-cancer and tumorreducing effects, according to research at the University of Milan and several other studies. Dogs are susceptible to some of the same types of cancers as humans, but they metastasize at a much faster rate. The most common types of cancer seen in dogs are malignant lymphomas (cancer of the lymph nodes), mast cell tumors (a form of skin cancer), soft tissue sarcomas, and bone cancer. Research shows that not only is CBD a powerful anti-tumoral compound in its own right, but that it acts synergistically with various anti-cancer pharmaceuticals, enhancing their impact while cutting the toxic dosage necessary for maximum effect. Take preventative steps.

Flea, tick and mosquito control is an important part of keeping pets healthy and happy. Year-round treatment is ideal and there are a variety of products that offer protection. If your pet spends time outdoors or goes swimming, be sure to use a waterproof application. “Mosquitoes are most active at dawn or dusk, so if you can avoid walking your dog during these hours, you can reduce the likelihood they will be bitten,” Freeman said. While a preventative treatment is an optimal way to keep pests at bay, it can also kill any fleas that may have found their way onto your pet and repel new ones.

Use pet-formulated insect repellents.

Never use human insect repellent on your pets. DEET, the active ingredient in many common bug sprays, can cause seizures, vomiting and irritation in dogs and cats. Likewise, if you are treating a cat for flea or tick prevention, ensure the repellent is specifically formulated for cats.

Look for clues that ﬂeas or ticks have found their way onto your pet.

Small, curly black droppings, known as flea dirt, can be found in the fur even when the fleas are not seen. To confirm if debris in a dog’s fur is flea droppings, Freeman recommends placing it on a white paper towel and adding a drop of water to it. If it turns red, your pet may have fleas. Ticks attach to the skin for feeding but can be found crawling on the fur when they first settle onto pets. Conduct a quick spot check on pets following walks or time spent outdoors by parting the fur with your hands to check the skin or by using a comb to brush through the fur.
