obtain medical equipment and healthcare supplies, affordably and reliably, says executive director Joanna Hunter. As the mother of a disabled daughter, she knows firsthand what a “huge difference” having the right medical equipment can make for both the patient and the caregiver.

Though inventory changes daily, some of the many items they typically carry include: • Bathroom safety equipment such as shower chairs, bedside commodes, and raised toilet seats • Ostomy supplies and related items • Catheter/urinary supplies • Tracheostomy supplies • CPAP and BIPAP equipment • Tube feeding supplies,

including liquid and powder nutrition supplies • Wound care supplies • Mobility equipment such as walkers and crutches According to Hunter, Good Health Will is the only retailer in the state that accepts donations of new and used medical equipment and healthcare supplies and then makes their products available to those in need. “Because the items are donated, we can provide a discount to our customers between 75 and 95 percent.” Additionally, those who can’t afford what they need may access their Pay it Forward fund and/or may apply for City of Loveland grants.

While the pandemic forced the non-profit to slow down initially, they’ve adapted quickly, in no small part because of the nature of their

McBride says they work closely with their vendors to negotiate the “lowest possible pricing,” in order to pass those savings on to October 25, 2020

While the pandemic has caused some changes in the way they operate, for the most part, it’s business as usual. Since coronavirus started, “We have always been required to maintain approved infection control processes, ensuring cleanliness of the equipment we provide and overall sanitation of our facilities,” says McBride. Now, they’re multiplying their efforts to keep their customers and employees safe and healthy.

The pandemic has had no

bearing, however, on their commitment to their customers. According to McBride, the business prides itself on being available to support customers long after the sales transaction is complete.

“We continue to provide a personal touch, giving the customer the ability to speak to a real person, to know that they are so much more than just a number to us.”

According to Theresa Kullen, LEAP manager at Colorado Department of Human Services, LEAP was established in 1980 “to assist low-income households, particularly those with the lowest incomes that pay a high proportion of household income for home heating costs, in meeting their immediate home heating needs.”

She explains it came about when Congress created the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP), as part of the Crude Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act, to address the concerns that came with rising energy prices in the 1970s.

To qualify, your household must earn no more than 60

percent of the state median income, be vulnerable to rising heating costs, and have at least one household member who is a U.S. citizen or is “lawfully present in the United States.”

As a federally funded block grant program, LEAP works with Energy Outreach Colorado to keep families afloat through the colder months. “There are thousands of vulnerable households across the state that would be forced to choose between paying their heat bill and buying food or medicine,” says Kullen. ”This is a position that no one across the state should be forced into making.”

1) How do I know which type of Medicare coverage is right for me?

Each person needs to make coverage decisions based on his or her health care needs and budget. To do that, you need to understand your options.

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) is provided by the federal government and includes hospital and medical coverage, but it doesn’t cover everything. You may have out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copays and coinsurance. Coinsurance for most Part B services, for example, is 20% of the cost.

In addition, Original Medicare does not cover prescrip-

tion drugs.

If you want additional coverage, there are two ways to get it: • Add Medicare supplement insurance and/or a standalone Medicare prescription drug plan (Part D) to Original Medicare.

3) How can I get coverage for my medications, since Original Medicare doesn’t provide it?

You have two options for prescription drug coverage: You can add a standalone Part D plan to Original Medicare, or you can join a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage.

Look for plans that cover the drugs you take.

Each plan has a formulary that lists which drugs are covered. Most formularies are tiered, dividing drugs into different levels of cost. Typically, lowtier drugs cost less than high-tier drugs.

(BPT) - “Will I go blind?”

It’s a frightening thought that most people have when they are told they have glaucoma.

“Patients are almost always concerned that they are go-

ing to lose their vision,” says Andrew Iwach, M.D., executive director of the Glaucoma Center of San Francisco. “The good news for the majority of patients is that we can

Glaucoma, an eye disease that damages the optic nerve, is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. Currently, it affects more than three million people in the United States. The National Eye Institute projects this number will rise by 58% over the next decade to 4.2 million people.

The most common form of the disease is open-angle glaucoma, which affects 90% of patients and occurs when the

eye’s drainage canals become clogged over time, according to the Glaucoma Research Foundation.

Open-angle glaucoma has been called “the sneak thief of sight” because it strikes without symptoms. In fact, experts estimate that half of the patients who have glaucoma don’t know it. As much as 40% of vision can be lost without a person noticing.

And once that eyesight is lost, it’s permanently gone.

“I didn’t have any symptoms prior to diagnosis,” says Richie Kahn, 34. “By then, glaucoma had already stolen part of my vision. I was surprised to learn that my brain

was actually compensating for my vision loss by filling in the blanks.”

Hope through treatment

Since glaucoma has no symptoms in its early stages and progresses slowly, eye doctors emphasize the importance of regular eye exams to detect the disease before there’s loss of vision.

The target for glaucoma therapy is to lower intraocular pressure (IOP). High IOP causes damage to the optic nerve, which produces vision loss in the disease. Approaches to lowering IOP include a wide range of eye drop medications, laser treatments that are performed in a doctor’s office, and several types of incisional surgery.

Trinh Green, M.D., has lived

with glaucoma for 24 years.

Like Richie, she had no symptoms of the disease, so her diagnosis came as a surprise.

Her advice is to remain calm and stay optimistic throughout their care and treatment.

“I think it’s very important for people to stay calm after learning they have glaucoma,” says Trinh. “There are many more treatments available in the last few years. I also owe so much to Dr. Iwach. He’s a very calming presence. Whenever there was a setback and the disease progressed, he would tell me, ‘I have a few more tricks up my sleeve.’”

SENIORS: Any fall can be life-threatening

Avoid falls with tips from local fall prevention specialists

The lead fall prevention nurse at Banner Health, Turner is daily motivated to “advocate and empower others” to stay active and prevent falls. She said, “If you have a fall, it increases the chances that you may have another fall. Accidents 14

can happen in the blink of an eye. There are 700,000 to a million people that fall every year (and) sustain a life-changing injury. Those are eye-opening facts, and thoughtful prevention is key.”

Physical and mental wellness

First, Turner said, “staying active both physically and mentally are the greatest fall prevention measures that anyone can take.” Daily movement options include “walking, strength and balance training, Tai Chi, Yoga, playing with your grandkids – anything to stay active every day is beneficial,” she said. Many recreation centers and gyms offer programs specific to seniors, and healthcare providers

can work with patients or connect them with a physical therapist to design an exercise program to build strength and balance.

Orthostatic hypertension falls

Echoing Turner, Evon Schones, director of wellness at the Good Samaritan Society at Loveland Village and a presenter on tips for preventing falls at the 2020 55 & Better Expo, acknowledged, “One in four people over the age of 65 fall each year, and the older you get, the more likely you are to fall.”

Aging adults are particularly susceptible to falls when they experience a head rush, or orthostatic hypertension.

She explained, “When you change positions quickly, where the heart and brain

are suddenly elevated, gravity causes the blood to pool in your legs.” Consequently, baroreceptors in the heart signal the brain to stabilize dropping blood pressure; however, aging baroceptors are less sensitive, which can lead to dizziness, fainting nausea, blurred vision, weakness – and thus falls. Other causes of orthostatic hypertension, Schones said, are “dehydration, taking certain medications, nervous system or thyroid disorders, low blood pressure, unbalanced electrolytes, low blood sugar, bedrest” and other factors common to older adults.

To reduce possible orthostatic hypertension, try these tips from Schone: • Drink decaffeinated beverages and eat foods high in water content.

Try eating smaller meals throughout the day to balance blood sugar.

• Do not exercise outdoors in the heat.

• Wear compression socks.

• Sit and stand slowly.

• Home hazards Sometimes people fall not because of physical complications but because of home hazards that could be avoided by lifestyle changes.

Schone said, “So often I hear about people tripping on items in the home and having a terrible fall as a result.

These types of falls are easily avoided by making a few small changes around the house.”

As you address these common emotions, you will learn how to move through them and focus on what you need to do so you can prevent another fall.” The good news, Schone said, “is falls are not inevitable.”

needing to use extra effort when communicating.

“Family members and friends should encourage their loved ones to continue to use their hearing aids—there is always sound around us,” explained Palmer. Hearing aids require ongoing maintenance and, for some individuals their hearing aids may not be functioning well or at all and they may not be able to get to their audiologist for routine care. Palmer continued, “If an individual continues to use their hearing aid when it is not working, it functions like an earplug—actually blocking sound.”

Luckily, many audiologists have provided online tele-health appointments and curbside care for individuals who cannot come into a clinic safely.

Some senior living facilities are allowing audiologists to come into their buildings after they have had a temperature check and/or met CDC criteria.

Many simple hearing aid problems can be solved over an online visit. For some individuals with milder hearing loss, who felt like they could communicate adequately, the addition of masks or online communication may

have stressed the hearing and they may seem now like they’re having more difficulty hearing. These individuals may want to access a clinic in person or find an audiologist who will visit them to begin the process of obtaining appropriate amplification that can assist them in their day-to-day communication situations.

Studies have shown links between untreated hearing loss and falls and hearing loss and dementia.

According to a study, by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, individuals with untreated mild hearing loss had a higher risk for falling that individuals without hearing loss. Another study at Johns Hopkins found that people with severe hearing loss were five times more likely to develop dementia. “Hearing is an important component of overall health,” Palmer added. “If you suspect any amount of hearing loss in yourself, a friend or family member, it’s important to get it checked as soon as possible.”

Caprice Sweatt was 17 years old when she was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack itself. The prognosis was grim—she was told she would probably be permanently disabled, unable to have children or hold a job. Three children and six grandchildren later, Caprice is a success story for CBD. CBD is an acronym for Cannabidiol, a naturally occurring chemical compound found in the resinous flowers and other parts of Cannabis Sativa, a plant with a rich medicinal history going back thousands of years. According to the International Association for Plant Taxonomy, “both hemp (varieties) and marijuana (varieties) are of the same genus, Cannabis, and

the same species, Cannabis Sativa.” Another way to say is that in this particular plant family, Cannabis is the grandparent, Cannabis Sativa is the parent, hemp and marijuana are offspring siblings – but they are not identical twins.

Caprice and her husband Eric Sweat own four CBD stores in Loveland and Greeley and Pekin and Champaign, Illinois and have their own CBD product line.

“I share my story to help dispel the stigma of CBD,” Caprice said. “I don’t know where I would be without it. Yvonne Myers, health systems director at Columbine Health Systems, says that nearly everyone she has helped to move into a senior living situation says, “I should have done this three years ago.” So, even if you’re considering the move but not sure yet, it’s valuable to understand your options and get started with the shopping process now.

Here are some tips for how to find the best senior living solution for your particular needs.

Know Your Options Senior living options include 55+ active adult communities, care homes, independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing facilities, memory care and long-term care communities. “Each type of community is meant 20

to serve older adults with differing needs,” says Danita Nixon, owner of Senior Living Advisors of Colorado based out of Loveland.

An active adult community, like Affinity at Loveland, is the best option for seniors who are making this decision on their own. These folks might simply be tired of doing the maintenance upkeep of their home. “It’s for people who want to stay active and have lots of things to do, but don’t need additional personal care services,” says Holly Smith, Community director at Affinity at Loveland.

Independent living is the next option, which provides plenty of autonomy but also the option of certain care services like meals, transportation and housekeeping.

This is followed by assisted

living, which offers a higher level of personal care, and then long-term, skilled nursing or memory care, all of which provide a structured and secure environment for individuals with medical needs.

Determine Your Needs and Resources The physical, mental and emotional needs of you or your loved one will be perhaps the most important factor in determining what kind of senior living arrangement will be most useful. “Everyone has different wants and needs when it comes to a new living arrangement,” says Smith. “It’s important to understand where you or your loved one is at in their lives and what type of environment would be most

Cost will also play a role, so it’s important to determine what you can afford prior to beginning your search for a new living environment.

Most people don’t enjoy moving, so it’s important to find a place you would want to call home for a long time!”

Ask the Right Questions When the time comes to take a tour of a potential senior living space, it’s important to ask the right questions. The most important questions will help you understand exactly what fees and costs are expected, and what services and amenities those expenses will cover.

It’s also important to ask what services are unavailable, and what situations might force a resident to move out of the community.

Even in a memory or long-term care environment, you can observe how staff interact with residents.

Local and world events have brought out strong emotions and stressors this year, often one right after another.

They include COVID-19, social distancing, quarantines, stay-at-home orders, furloughs, job loss, masking, racial injustice, protests and demonstrations. There’s no question 2020 has been a year full of change and trauma.

In addition to social unrest, you may be experiencing a high-pressure job, financial stress or poverty, being a caregiver, raising children, chronic illness or death of a family member or friend.

Hospice and palliative care programs provide pain management, symptom control, psychosocial support and spiritual care to patients and their families when a cure is not possible. These programs combine the highest level of quality medical care with the emotional and spiritual support that families need most when facing a serious illness or the end of life.

Throughout the month of November, Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE®) will join organizations across the nation in hosting activities that help their community understand how important hospice and palliative care can be.

Volunteer Programs PROMOTE HEALTHY AGING

Volunteer programs help communities thrive in many ways. Spending just few hours per week or month with local seniors helps improve their quality of life while you improve yours. Here are some ideas about the benefits of volunteering and ways you can get involved locally.

Did you know a significant number of Colorado residents spend time volunteering? Colorado ranks No. 18 in the United States for pitching in when friends and strangers are in need of a helping hand, according to AmericaCorps, an organization that helps people find volunteer projects.

During times like these when social isolation is at an all-time high, and mental health issues like anxiety and depression aren’t far behind, the act of volunteerism could be the answer to better health.

Giving just two hours per week is said to reduce mortality and increase wellbeing among the 50 and up crowd who volunteer their time, according to research in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Volunteers often report a new sense of purpose and a reduction in stress.

Volunteers of American, in Fort Collins said they offer three different volunteer opportunities geared towards helping older adults.

“We have a handyman program for people who need safety improvements to their home, like ramps and safety rails.”

Pulley said you don’t need any previous carpentry experience and it’s a great way to learn news skills and meet people. They work in groups of six to eight people.

“It’s usually a half day of work, depending on complexity,” she said.

The organization also run a meals-on-wheels program for people aged 60 and up can receive frozen meals. This program offers

either one meal a day or the breakfast and dinner option, she said.

“There are also drivethrough meal sites. We have sites in Fort Collins, Loveland and are hoping to have a Berthoud site, which we are in final approvals,” Pulley said.

The benefits of programs like this is that it promotes independence while helping older adults stay in their homes longer, she said.

Among Northern Colorado seniors using the program, Pulley said they served 250 northern Colorado seniors from April through September 2020— through both the meals on wheels and warm meals programs.

The Caregiver Respite

Program is another one to consider. Simply provide friendship to a homebound individual while their caregiver takes a break. Since caregivers tend to be oncall 24/7, finding time for a trip to the grocery store or a few stolen moments at a coffee shop can feel like a luxury for caregivers.

“We just opened up the program. We’ve been doing limited visits outdoors and some in-home programs as well,” Pulley said.

MAINTAINING ORAL HEALTH in the time of coronavirus (BPT) - Since the beginning of the pandemic, many normal aspects of everyday life have been put on hold - including dental checkups.

For months dental offices were closed, or available only for dental emergencies.

Now dental offices are opening again, with new health and protocols to help protect patients and employees.

While regular appointments were cancelled or postponed, oral health remains a top concern for many people. According to a dental study conducted

by Guardian Life, some adults who were unable to access regular preventive care stepped up their efforts to improve their own oral health at home. On average, 20% of those surveyed reported making changes to their oral health habits, mostly for the better. Many reported practicing increased flossing,brushing more frequently and thoroughly as well as eating a healthier diet.

Given restricted access to preventive care during early 2020, many patients now 30

feel ready to schedule exams.

Many said they anticipated returning to the dentist in September. Yet, survey respondents all expressed the need for increased safety precautions to reduce their anxiety around in person visits, along with enhanced communication with their dental office.

While nearly three in 10 adults said they’re more anxious about visiting the dentist since the outbreak, the majority of adults (52%) claimed that their level of anxiety about visiting the dentist did not change due to the pandemic. Patients planning to visit their dentist soon ranked using protective equipment and physical distancing or limiting the number of patients in the office as their top concerns.

What you can do to maintain good oral health: Keep up with regular dental checkups.

The American Dental Association (ADA) currently recommends dental visits at least once every six months to maintain oral health and to detect issues early. While 8 in 10 adults believe oral health is important, many do not receive regular preventive dental care. Even before the pandemic began, less than half (45%) received semiannual exams.

Over 1 in 3 survey respondents said it was vital for their dental office to communicate their safety measures to make them feel more comfortable about returning to the dentist.

Learn about teledentistry options.

Teledentistry, digital communication and online self-service tools are now significantly more accessible from dentists. Many providers can consult with patients using electronic means like video conferencing to monitor patient oral health and discuss specific concerns.

According to the survey: • One in six adults reported feeling more positive about teledentistry since the pandemic, viewing tool.

• Nearly one in four were open to using teledentistry, even after dentists started seeing patients again.

• Millennials and working parents were the most

likely to use teledentistry in the future.

• Parents were more likely to use teledentistry for their child than themselves, both during and after the pandemic.

Overall, there was increased interest in using electronic communication with dental offices, both for setting appointments and consultations. A higher percentage said they preferred to use texting and online chat.

While most respondents were unaware if their provider even offered teledentistry services or whether teledentistry was covered by their dental insurance, more than one-third said they would be open to trying teledentistry.

Some said they favored it over traditional in person

visits for certain conditions and situations - such as when physically unable to go in person due to caring for young children or an elderly parent, or because of work schedules.
