Franchise owners Marc and Kelli Rogers asked themselves this question: “ What makes Nor thern Colorado so great ?”

And here is their answer : Is it the endless hiking and biking trails or the breweries that are unique to e a c h t o wn? All of these attributes are a big reason why we decided to open a restaurant in Windsor.

We settled on Nor thern Colorado after visiting several other potential locations to open our busines s . The f riendlines s , scener y, and small-town feel made us feel right at home.

Shor tly after opening our second location, we met our current b us i n e s s p a r t n e r s Jas o n a n d We n d i B e l d. We f o u n d o u t we ha d much in common and decided to form a par tnership. Together we have opened a combined 10 locations since 2011. Jason and Wendi live in Timnath and have been a par t of Nor thern Colorado for over a decade.

After settling in our home , it became clear we needed a Fuz z y ’s in Windsor.

The Windsor location is like our second home. We are there daily and meet friends and famil y often. Some of the staff have been with us since the f ir st location. And we host local fundraisers several times a week .

Our par tner ’s s on, Tanner Beld, is a manager there as well. And recentl y my s on Zach R o g e r s a n d h i s w i f e K r i s t e n r e l o c a t e d f r o m Te x a s t o b e a p a r t o f Fu z z y ’s . T h e y a r e currentl y living in Water Valle y and love e ver y thing Winds or has to offer. Both Tanner and Zach are now shareholders in the Windsor location.

The town of Windsor has been beyond great in suppor ting our local business . We feel so blessed to be par t of this communit y and call Windsor our home.

Down Right Sweet Treats

My name is Tkale (It is pronouced just as it looks: a short “T” sound in front of Kale, like the vegetable!) Ribble, and I am the owner of Down Right Sweet Treats. It is an in-home bakery I started in 2018 and has grown into not just taking cupcakes and cake orders, but also teaching cake decorating classes. I have an awesome and supportive family of five - my husband, Brandon, my oldest son Talon (6), my middle daughter Tinley (4) and my youngest daughter Tiana (1-1/2).

What started out as a small, part-time way to raise money for our next adoption, Down Right Sweet Treats quickly tur ned into something much more. We are e xcited for its g rowth and awareness toward both adoption and specifically Down Syndrome. The name came from a play on words “down right sweet” having a positive spin on Down Syndrome, as we plan to specifically pursue an adoption with a child who has DS. This is still the plan for our future. We would like to wait for our Semi-naked floral drip cake. youngest to be a little older before we take that journey.

Both my husband and I were born and raised in Colorado and have found Windsor to be the perfect place to raise our family.

We love how close it is to Denver and the mountains, while being a small, g rowing, friendly town. We love Windsor so much and are excited to be part of its growth. Together, my husband and I are opening The Mill, a wedding and event venue on Windsor’s Main Street. We will occupy the upstairs of the new Windsor Mill building above the Cacciatore restaurant.

That’s where I plan to start exclusively taking cake orders for our weddings and events.

The goal for 2020 is to open The Mill this summer for weddings and corporate events, as well as Down Right Sweet Treats cake classes. We are offering pre-construction tours and would love to show off our space to engaged couples.

Ryan Joy, head brewer

How long has Mash Lab been open and how long have you worked at Mash Lab? Mash Lab opened in mid-December 2016, so just over three years now. I have worked for Mash Lab for two years.

What’s your background in brewing beer?

I started as a home brewer. My dad and I picked it up as a hobby when I was in college. I never thought it would or could be much more than that. However, after finishing graduate school at Colorado State University, I found myself unemployed and looking for something to do with my day after I finished applying for jobs. You can only write so many cover letters and job applications in a day before the quality starts to diminish. I wandered into a recently opened brewery and asked if they needed help or if I could do some sort of job shadowing a few days a week. They agreed and I started observing brew days, cleaning kegs and bartending. After a few weeks, I became a part-time employee and my role grew from volunteer to full-time lead brewer over the next four and half years. After my time there, I moved on to a larger brewery.

I took a distribution job with hopes of moving back into beer production when this brewer y opened its new facility. After five months of delivering beer, I moved back to the production side where I was brewing and packaging on a much larger scale than my first brewing job. I wasn’t looking for a new job, but I was approached by a friend who told me Mash Lab was looking for a new brewer and that he had recommended the owner to talk to me. We met and after some necessar y equipment upgrades, I took the job as head brewer at Mash Lab. I am lucky I have the freedom to brew the beers I want to brew and even luckier that people come in and enjoy those beers.

What makes Mash Lab unique?

Beyond the wide array of quality beers we produce, Mash Lab is unique in that it is attached to our owner ’s other business, Pinkee’s Rod Shop. The shop is an award-winning and nationally known builder of custom hot rods and classic cars. Our tasting room looks into the shop and customers can see the cars that are being built while they enjoy their beers in our industrial, yet modern space.

What awards has Mash Lab won?

We have been awarded three medals from the US Open Beer Championship, which is the third largest beer competition in the country.

The Fog Lamp IPA is a very popular beer at Mash Lab, why do you think that is?

It is due in part to the larger trend in the popularity of hazy, juicy or New England style IPAs. These beers are brewed to put more emphasis on the flavor and aroma that can be derived from hops rather than the assertive bitterness more commonly associated with the IPAs of a few years ago. These flavors are more approachable to a mass audience.

Orange Sour.

Despite some criticisms of the style and the hazy appearance, these beers are quite difficult to brew and not everyone has figured it out yet. The style calls for massive amounts of hops, sometimes up to three times more than other IPAs, but if used in the wrong way the beer can become muddled and harsh. In the Fog Lamp, we have found the right balance of hops and the times at which they are used. The beer ticks all the boxes of the style: a great tropical and citrus aroma that leads to similar flavors with low bitterness and a smooth creamy mPouthfeel and the signature hazy appearance.

How many beers to you have on tap at a given time?

We can have 12 different beers at a time and 99 percent of the time we have the lines full.

What new beers are you working on right now?

I recently purchased some often hard to find and ver y expensive hops from Australia and New Zealand that we plan to use in some new hazy IPAs, as well as some variations of the Fog Lamp. Our fruited sours have become very popular and I look forward to some new and interesting fruit combinations in this ever-evolving beer.

The hard seltzer market has been ver y popular the last few years. Do you foresee Mash Lab creating its own hard seltzer?

As a brewer, I am always looking for ward to a challenge and learning more about different fermentation. In that sense, the hard seltzer trend is intriguing to me. Seltzer is a much different product than beer, so until I gain enough knowledge on how to properly produce one, it is unlikely that you will see one on in the tasting room. However, I have conducted some test batches to begin that learning process. I strive for quality in all our products, so if I won’t drink it, I don’t see why I should push it on the masses just to keep up with a trend.

Mash Lab plans to expand its building to the north. How will this improve the business?

It will improve in many ways. More space overall and a dedicated brewing area, as opposed to it being right in the doorway, will allow us to produce more beer with less work. We are also looking to partner with someone to offer food full-time as opposed to having a rotating list of food trucks.

People tend to drink more beer when they can also eat, so I think that’s a win, win. The space also has plans for a larger patio, more parking, and will allow us to use our current space for private events.

What’s the partnership between Mash Lab and Pinkies? They’re both owned by Eric and Cristin Peratt, but is there a direct affiliation between the two businesses?

Eric and Cristin Peratt own both Pinkee’s and Mash Lab. Other than that, I wouldn’t say they are intertwined much more than that. Mash Lab occasionally uses the shop for private events that are too big to accommodate in the tasting room. Pinkee’s serves as the official venue for the Goodguys Car Show kickoff party in September and Mash Lab is the sole beer provider for that event.

Where do you see Mash Lab in the next 10-20 years?

My goal for Mash Lab is, first and foremost, to provide people with interesting and top-quality beer, a great atmosphere and great service. The beer market is very much in flux right now with trends like hard seltzer. We want to ride the line of quality product, innovation without chasing trends and sustainable growth. If we can achieve these goals, I don’t see any reason why Mash Lab wouldn’t be successful in the years and decades to come.

Windsor now has three breweries, with another opening at the Windsor Mill soon. Is Windsor slowly turning into a beer town?

I think that is certainly the goal. More breweries give so many more opportunities to educate people on what good beer is. Also, if the quality is there, we can draw people from Loveland and Fort Collins to come imbibe in Windsor. Windsor has a hard time retaining residents for entertainment and dining experiences. I think with more dining and entertainment options, people in town will be more likely to stay here and spend their money here. That’s good for all business in town.

Good Samaritan Expands in Windsor’s Water Valley Development The Good Samaritan Society Water Valley Senior Living Resort planned expansion was completed in January 2020 consisting of a 56,000-square-foot Assisted Living and Memory Care community.

The resort is entering its 11th year serving Northern Colorado. The addition of assisted living and memory care further solidifies the Society’s commitment to providing quality senior living and care in Northern Colorado.

“The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society continues to seek opportunities where we can expand our outreach to a vulnerable population needing care, comfort and security,” said John McElderry, Water Valley Senior Living Resort’s Executive Manager.

“As part of the Norther n Colorado community, we have helped share God’s love with many seniors and their families who were facing difficult choices and transitions.”

The expansion will consist of the following: A two-story, 40-bed licensed assisted living (AL) community. The AL community includes Studio and 1 Bedroom apartments with common areas for assisted living residents located on both floors of the building to provide activity programming and support services.

A one-story, 16-bed licensed memory care assisted living (MCAL) community. The MCAL uses a “family home” model that includes 16 private resident rooms with private baths centered around a shared community/dining room area, enclosed resident courtyard, purpose-built resident programming areas and staff support spaces.

The common areas include a chapel/multi-purpose activity room, dining room, fitness area, salon, spa, resident common areas and staff support areas throughout the building.

When my daughter, whose name is Hurleigh, was a baby I used to sing “ The Muffin Man” song to her all the time. Instead of using a strange word she wouldn’ t recognize like “ Drur y Lane” I would sing “ Hurleigh Lane.”

What is t he his t or y of t he bus i nes s ? How di d t he s t or e f r ont c ome ab out ?

The shop star ted in my home as an online business after Hurleigh was born. She was our four th daughter and I knew by then how to be a girl mom, but I was wanting a st yle that was di fferent from what the chain stores were offering at that time. I wanted to f ind a boho-chic look that was feminine and fun. My original dream was to be a retailer to offer this unique st yle to the communit y, but knew I had to star t small first. I spent most of the first year researching, buying samples, and tr ying to refine exactly the st yle I was looking for. After three years of growing my online presence and inventor y, I knew my shop was ready for the nex t step. I prayed my little hear t out that God would open the door for the right place that would be suppor tive of this t ype of business. I also knew I had to be open minded and maybe an online shop was what consumers really wanted and that was what the future of retail looked like. I was torn, not really knowing what the best option was. In my hear t , I wanted a real physical location and I began the search. The oppor tunit y for me to rent a space in (the) Water Valley (master-planned communit y of Windsor) came about and it was per fect! It was the communit y I was looking for - growing, family-oriented and close to home.

I chose the business of babies originally, because there is so much excitement and positivit y that surrounds each baby. I wanted to be in a business that I knew - with four kids of my own, I had a bit of experience - and bring joy and let me be creative. As my business star ted to grow, and Hurleigh was growing up along with it , I added in toddler clothes and eventually expanded into teen sizes to fit my older girl. Now all my girls model and are a par t of the family business.

For the newborn/infant clothing line, I tr y to purchase organic material only. The rest of the clothing lines I carr y, I tr y to work with vendors I trust and can develop good working relations with. The st yles I am looking for in my shop should represent the essence of being a girl - fun, sweet , care-free and timeless. Pieces that can be mixed and matched as the seasons change without spending a lot of money. I shy away from pieces that can be bought at big box stores but tr y to offer items a little girl can use to create her own unique st yle. The toys and teethers I carr y must have an eco-conscious ethic to them. And they also must be unique; hand-painted by ar tisans, organic and sustainable materials or fair trade.

What drives you to get up and go to work ever y day ? The passion that carries me is my desire to see girls embrace who God created them to be. We are seeing a shift in our culture that doesn’ t allow space for girls to be confident in their own skin. I want girls to know that it ’s OK to dress prett y, to be bold, and have the courage to do whatever it is God has called them to do. To see the kids pick out their own st yle, tr y on Hurleigh Lane’s outfits, and twirl around and say, “ See Mama,” makes my day. I want each girl who walks in my door - and little boy too - to know they are loved, precious and beautiful.

What ar e y our hopes and goals f or t he f ut ur e?

My goals are to be an asset to the communit y, not just Windsor, but Nor thern Colorado as we par tner with local charities to meet the needs of those children around us. I want to see Hurleigh Lane be able to bless and love on those families that need it. I would like to continue going down the path of expanding the clothing line to teens and Mommy and Me, while continuing to offer unique pieces that stand on their own.

We live on an 11-acre farm. We have llamas and piggies. We have four daughters, 19-year-old Calin, 16-year-old Tyler, 10-year-old Kai and 3-year-old Hurleigh. I am originally from Southern California, and I love raising a family on a farm with a close-knit communit y. My daughters attend Resurrection Christian Schools and we feel ex tremely blessed to call this place home.

We immediately fell in love with this town, and it has been the perfect place to put down roots and raise our children. A lot has changed in Windsor since we moved here 13 years ago, but those core values have not. Develop a long-term solution to Windsor’s projected water shortages by leading the conversation with regional jurisdictions. We need to be proactive in securing this vital resource for our future.

Address Windsor’s growing transportation needs. A sure sign of Windsor’s growth is in our traffic flow. I will specifically address truck traffic through downtown Windsor as that not only affects motorists but patrons to our downtown businesses. This will require an ongoing relationship with policymakers at the state level, a relationship I have already established.

Windsor is the safest community in Colorado and I don’t take that for granted. I will continue to support and advocate for our police and fire departments as they passionately serve the people of Windsor.

My campaign agenda has honestly morphed into something different over the last couple of months.

•

The biggest point of my campaign is to give the youth and younger residents in Windsor a voice at town hall. I want to inspire our younger generations to get involved to have a “yes we can” mentality. Representation of all people is important but I want to especially be a representative of our youth.

•

The second issue that I hope to address is road infrastructure. I constantly hear from people that they dread their drives home from work only because of the massive amount of congestion here in our town. Most notably I hope to address traffic issues on Colorado Hwy. 392 from I-25 to Colorado Blvd.

•

Finally, water storage is going to be a huge issue. As mayor of Windsor, I would hope that we can work with other communities to get the Northern Integrated Supply Project (NISP) underway and begin building those reservoirs that’ll benefit all of Northern Colorado.

Brad Kochen is taking care of your panes The local resident and military veteran is the owner of Kochen Window and Blind Cleaning and uses the play-on-words to symbolize his intent to give back to the community that gave him so much. “We find that our lives are blessed, and we want to give back to our fellow veterans in any way we are able,” said the graduate of Thompson Valley High School in Loveland.

Brad served in the United States Navy from 1990-03 and was stationed in Somalia and served in the Desert Storm conflicts. Upon retiring from the military in the summer of 2003, Brad said he “simply wanted to work for myself and take care of my clients.” That’s when he and his wife Tina, a native of Oklahoma, decided to create a window and blind cleaning business.

“I love my job,” Brad said. “We are grounded in the community we love.”

Brad and Tina also contribute their time to serving local veterans in need. One of the things they love about Northern Colorado is how supported small businesses are. Their slogan - “taking care of your panes” – means they not only take care of their customer’s windows but are also attentive to the needs of their clients. They clean both commercial and residential blinds and windows.

“My wife Tina and I have been cleaning windows and blinds for a long time that it has become second nature.

We think taking care of our clients and providing unprecedented service to them is key. It is a unique business, not very many people are doing it, so we have to provide world-class service to keep our dream of serving the community alive.”

Dickey’s Barbeque Pit Opens in The Water Valley master-planned community in Windsor has welcomed a new face to its family. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, a Texas-based restaurant, has taken up residency in a former coffee shop at 1399 Water Valley Parkway.

Dickey’s was founded in 1941 in Dallas, Texas serving authentic Texas barbecue. Fast forward nearly 80 years and Dickeys is the largest barbecue franchise in the world. Windsor residents Jon and Sara Hockhalter were looking to open their first Dickey’s restaurant in the Johnstown Plaza when a space became available in Windsor’s Water Valley community.

The Hockhalter’s jumped at the chance to bring Dickey’s nationally renowned barbecue to their neighborhood and surrounding communities. The Hockhalter’s began renovations of the old coffee shop in the summer of 2019. During the renovation, they removed the flooring, duct work, electrical, plumbing, moved walls, added a grease trap, and installed what they call “The Pit” which is a smoker that smokes 300 pounds of meats at a time. The Pit required quite a bit of venting that created some logistical challenges. Despite a few major system malfunctions, the Hockhalter’s were able to utilize their experiences with smoking meats to keep the guests fed while they worked out the kinks.

Since the doors opened in November, they have been able to satisfy the desire for more food options in Windsor.

Dickey’s not only welcomes walk-in customers, but its catering business has already provided meals to area schools, the police and fire departments, and board meetings for the Town of Windsor.

Windsor’s Water Valley North The transformation from the coffee shop to the store’s current homey and welcoming dining space has been undeniable.

The Hockhalter’s are originally from North Dakota and moved to Colorado in 2012 with their now 16-year-old daughter Sofia.

“We are so in love with this area, so it was the perfect place to add Dickey’s Barbecue as another option for the community,” says Sara Hockhalter. “Our friends have always asked us to open a restaurant because we love cooking for the masses and making people happy enjoying our food. There is nothing better than smoking our meats daily and hearing how happy people are about the flavors and options.”

Jon and Sara have gladly adopted Dickey’s corporate philosophy of giving back to military service members and first responders.

They have also enthusiastically donated caterings and provided discounts to honor these heroes. The Hockhalter’s are always looking for talent to join the Pit Crew and pride themselves in hiring all ages and building the community’s youth.

Connects County to County The Poudre River Trail Corridor, Inc. is a local non-profit organization formed in 1994, managed by a local board comprised of representatives from Greeley, Windsor and Weld County. The board operates under the direction of those community representatives and an intergovernmental agreement allowing the support of professional staff from the City of Greeley, Weld County, and the Town of Windsor. Together they form a community partnership that maintains and improves the incredible trail you see today. There have been some exciting changes happening along the corridor. Bob Hinderaker, poudre trail manager and Wade Willis, open space and trails manager for the Town of Windsor, have much to tell about the past and the future of the Poudre River Trail Corridor.

Getting to know the people in charge: Bob Hinderaker, Poudre River Trail manager for the last two years, is an employee of the Poudre River Trail Corridor assisting Weld County in the construction and maintenance of the 21-mile portion of the Poudre River Trail in Weld County. Wade Willis, open space and trails manager for the Town of Windsor, has worked for the Town of Windsor for 19 years. He started as town forester/ parks construction manager, and managed parks and open space for most of his career and has been serving as the open space and trails manager since the beginning of 2019.

History of the Poudre River Trail The groundbreaking for the Poudre River Trail took place on National Trail Days, June 2, 1994. It all started with a section in Greeley and a section in Windsor, and together, the trail came to life. As property agreements, community donations, grants, in-kind and volunteer support allowed, sections of the trail were assembled like a 21-mile jigsaw puzzle. As more pieces were connected, the community utilized the trail to enjoy the Poudre River Corridor in ways only dreamed of before the trail provided access. Finally, in December 2008, the Poudre River Trail Board drove its version of the Golden Spike into the wet cement of the final stretch of trail to connect its east and west sections. The completed concrete trail was 10 feet wide and just over 21 miles long. The section that passes through the Water Valley community of Windsor was constructed in 1999 – 2000.

According to Willis, “I grew up in Windsor and recall seeing a stor y in the Greeley Tribune when I was around 12 or so that announced a trail to connect Greeley to Fort Collins. As a passionate dirt biker, I was very excited about the prospect of a trail. At that time, we would ride our bikes to Greeley taking county roads, there was a lot less traffic back then, but it could still be scary.”

This is just one reason why the preservation and expansion of the Poudre River Trail is so important to the community. Hinderaker states that, “The greenway is more than just a trail. It is a corridor. The Poudre River Trail Corridor is one portion of the Cache la Poudre National Heritage Area. The trail has opened access to hundreds of acres of natural areas that have been protected in Greeley and Windsor. This creates opportunities to preser ve sensitive habitats, protect the integrity of the river system, and provide additional open space areas for public enjoyment. The trail board supports this effort and the efforts of neighboring communities to connect to the Poudre River Trail.” The trail construction and maintenance has historically been funded through grants, private donors and municipal budgets. The portion of the trail in Weld County was funded by 52 percent community donations; 36 percent grants; 12 percent local government.

The Future of the Trail The future is exciting. The Poudre River Trail will connect Weld and Larimar counties with an anticipated final completion in 2023. Willis says that in 2019, Larimer County, Timnath, Fort Collins and Windsor agreed to partner on the submission of a Concept Paper for a Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Connect Initiative grant. There has been a long-standing partnership between these entities on collaborations like this. The goal was to get the concept paper approved so the group would be invited to submit a grant…and it was approved. With Larimer County Natural Resources leading the effort, a concept paper was developed describing the total project. They started meeting on a monthly, sometimes more often, basis, to compile information, write narratives, provide a tour of the project to GOCO staff and ultimately submitted the actual grant application which was then awarded.

The completion of the trail between Windsor and Fort Collins is funded from many sources, most notably a GOCO Grant. The matching funds generally come from dedicated monies generated through the Larimer County Open Space Tax, budgets from Timnath and Fort Collins and by private development. Hinderocker says of the future of the trail, there are still more plans for the future. “In Weld County, we would eventually like to take the trail all the way to the Platte River.”

Making the outdoor living a priority is one of the things that residents love about living in Northern Colorado. The Poudre River Trail expansion is a way that local residents can work together to improve the the quality of life in the area.

A Small Kid from a Big Hockey Family

By Kitt Amundson and The Colorado Eagles Every hockey player has their own unique story about how they were introduced to the game and how they got to where they are today. We recently sat down with Colorado Eagles Alternate Captain and Forward Sheldon Dries to learn about his story.

“My dad, all my uncles and cousins play hockey. So, we’re definitely a hockey family,” he said. He knew from an early age that he wanted to play hockey like the rest of his family members did as they grew up. But it wasn’t until later in life that Sheldon came to the realization that hockey was going to be his career.

“We’re definitely a hockey family,” Sheldon Dries says emphatically, “I started when I was about 4 years old, and my brother who is 4 years older than me was already playing at the time. Growing up my dad coached both of our teams, so if it wasn’t my practice, I would go skate at my older brother’s practices.” An undersized player now, Sheldon was always up to the task of playing against bigger and older kids. “It definitely helped growing up skating with my older brother’s team. They let me hang around and play with them, so I was always used to playing against guys that were bigger than me. I’m very grateful for that opportunity and those skates are some I will never forget.”

Some years and practices down the road the game of hockey started to become a little bit more “real” for Sheldon Dries. “You start trying out for junior hockey teams and then college offers start to come in and the game starts to look a little different, ya know? It’s still fun and it’s still the game you love so much, but there’s just a different edge to it.”

Sheldon played three years of junior hockey in the USHL and got the opportunity to play in the Four Nations Tournament for Team USA in Switzerland. “That was a great experience getting to go over there and play for your country. Switzerland is a beautiful place and I definitely fell in love with that area.” After junior hockey Sheldon decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and commit to playing college hockey at Western Michigan University, a very proud day for the Dries’ household.

Sheldon played four years at Western Michigan University, amassing a total of 84 points during that time. Even after a successful college career he never heard his name called during the NHL Draft. But Dries was no stranger to adversity, being an undersized player his whole life, there were some who doubted his ability to play at the next level.

“Being cut from that Hlinka team; It definitely hurt but it gave me that chip on my shoulder. I wanted to prove people wrong since then and I carry it with me every day.”

During the 2018-19 season Sheldon was signed by the Colorado Avalanche organization, after previously playing for the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League. He entered the Avalanche training camp as a second-year pro determined to play his fast-paced and physical type of game, hoping the Avalanche coaching staff would take notice. They did.

Dries celebrates a goal during the Eagles first ever Affiliation Night on Nov. 16. The jerseys showcase the proud affiliation between the Colorado Avalanche and Colorado Eagles.

Signed as an AHL prospect with potential of cracking an NHL roster someday, Sheldon earned his spot on the Avalanche’s opening night roster. “It was a dream come true. It took me a while to realize that ‘hey, I am in the NHL’. Especially being an undrafted, under sized kid from Detroit, a lot of people said it [playing in the NHL] wouldn’t happen,” Sheldon said of his first year in the NHL. But this season has started off differently for him. “I cherished my time up there and now the hard work begins again to get back up there.”

Sheldon knows that the road ahead is rocky and comes with many obstacles, one of those coming in the form of some new players the Avalanche signed over the summer. “Competition is always good, especially within your own team. It pushes everyone to get better. It starts in practice. It is doing the right things day in and day out and being a good teammate and trusting the process. That when you are down here with the Eagles, you put your best foot forward and get back up there.”

Behind the scenes at Pelican Lakes Golf Course

Orr manages dozens of full-time and seasonal employees at Pelican Lakes.

When Jeff Orr was a student at Colorado State University, he had no idea what his field of study would be, let alone what he wanted to be when he grew up. An invitation to earn money as a seasonal worker for Greeley’s Boomerang Golf Club quickly changed his professional perspective and focus.

“When I was going to college, I received a call from the superintendent of Boomerang Golf Course in Greeley. He needed seasonal help,” said Orr, a native of Boca Raton, Florida. “I thought it would be a great job for me while in school and I quickly realized how much I loved the work. “I loved being outside, getting my hands dirty and solving problems. From that day forward, I decided that turf management was for me.

“As much as I didn’t know the path it would create for me, I am so happy that turf management has brought me to work on a golf course, and even better, the Pelican Lakes golf course.”

Fast forward over 20 years later, and Orr is now the golf course superintendent at the 27-hole Pelican Lakes Golf Club in Windsor. Orr began his career at Pelican Lakes in 2003 as a spray tech on the maintenance staff. He had recently received his bachelor’s degree in landscape and horticulture technologies with an emphasis in turf when he accepted the position at Pelican Lakes. During his tenure at Pelican Lakes, which is owned and maintained by the Water Valley Land Company, Orr has seen many changes. “I have seen so many positive changes while working and playing golf at Pelican Lakes,” he said. “I am the fourth superintendent to work at the course since it was first beginning development in 1996. I have watched the restaurant evolve into the great establishment it is today.

“One of the best changes is the downstairs changing from a banquet room to a health club and now to the Sand Bar.” Some of the major changes Orr has experienced has been mitigating damage created when the Cache la Poudre River, which flows through the heart of the 18-hole Pelican Lakes course, has flooded.

“In 2014, we did a remodel on the front nine due to past flooding. This was a way to decrease damage due to high waters during summer warm-ups,” said Orr. “This was a needed change, and we have experienced some challenges we didn’t see coming.

“I have seen different people come and go at Water Valley, but I have also developed many relationships with people who have devoted their time and effort into this amazing company,” he said.

“By far, (Water Valley CEO and Pelican Lakes owner) Martin Lind has been an exceptional boss to work for over these past 17 years. He has helped me take my ideas and passion and make them into a reality. I do consider him a mentor and couldn’t imagine working for anyone else.”

One wouldn’t blame Orr if he’s biased when it comes to ranking his course against other top tracks in the state.

“There are several elements that make Pelican Lakes stand out to me,” he said. “One is the layout. The shorelines of the lakes and the Poudre River make it challenging, yet a beautiful landscape to enjoy. The beaches and palm trees are one-of-a-kind, and I couldn’t imagine the course without them. The sunsets are amazing here while sitting at the clubhouse. It makes you take in every second. The golf course community is one-of-a-kind as well. Members, people who play all the time, and even first timers, all create a fun place to be and enjoy a game of golf.

“Another element I think about is Thursday Night Men’s League.

We have one of the biggest memberships in Northern Colorado.

I think it really adds to the amazing residents we have in Water Valley and how supportive they are of our staff and our course.”

While the layout of the golf course is breathtaking and unique for the region, it’s also one of Orr’s greatest challenges. Pelican Lakes boasts more than 7.5 miles of shoreline when you factor in the five man-made lakes and the meandering Poudre River. This fluid amenity gives Pelican Lakes the distinction of having the most shoreline than any other golf course in North America.

“The water creates a challenge with maintenance,” Orr said. “Even though we have made much needed changes, there is always the chance of flooding. Every June we watch the temperatures in the mountains to see if this Mother Nature event will hinder us from setting up for summer play.

Since Pelican Lakes and Pelican Falls offer 27 challenging and majestic holes, it’s difficult for Orr to pick just one as his favorite.

“This is such a hard question for me, as I see each hole in different ways besides just playability,” he said.

“But, on the Pelican Lakes course it has to be hole 18. It is a very challenging and unique golf hole. In fact, it is one of the hardest holes on the course. It is a long Par 4 and has the beautiful, yet demanding, Poudre River running right through it. As a player, the hole makes you lay up before crossing the river.

I have realized that my second shot is 200-plus yards to reach the green. Yet, all around the green are bunkers that will quickly swallow up your golf ball.

“Now, on the Pelican Falls course the best hole has to be hole 9. It is a Par 3 with an island green. It is a tough iron shot with water surrounding the tiny green. It is one-of-a-kind at the course. Both holes offer a player the ability to improve their game every time they play. Something I absolutely love about the game of golf is that I’m always improving my game and shots.”

Even though the 18-hole Pelican Lakes and 9-hole Pelican Falls are related, they’re vastly different layouts.

“The Falls is a great addition for members if they can’t play on the Lakes course due to tournaments. The Falls is easily assessable and very fun to play. The layout on Falls is very different than the Lakes,” Orr said. “The Falls, for one, has more houses aligning the course where the Lakes is more open with no homes directly impacting play.

“The Falls has lots of elevation changes which I think makes it super fun. In fact, the Par 3’s on Falls are very interesting. Not only do they have the elevation changes, there are cool features like the island green or the waterfall feature. In fact, that waterfall between holes 6 and 8 is always something to take a moment to enjoy.”

Since Mother Nature is the one who is ultimately in control, Orr and his maintenance staff are constantly tweaking and improving the golf courses.

“In the last couple of years, we have worked on improving the greens. This includes making them faster and firmer for optimal play,” he said. “Drainage work on the fairways have also been a top priority these past couple of years. Because we are so lucky to have the Poudre River in our backyard, we have worked hard on water management. This has helped with the firmness and quickness on the course. Our goal behind all these changes is to not only improve playability for the golf game, but also add a unique flair to an already unique course.

“Another addition is the new design for tee markers. We worked closely with a Windsor High School teacher to create and design the new markers. These are a great addition to our course. Part of our responsibilities also include updates at the Water Valley wedding island, as well as other community improvements and maintenance. We have diligently worked hard to add color, improve aesthetics and make the island a supreme location for events and weddings in Windsor.

Golf course superintendents are a tight-knit group, especially in Colorado. They’re constantly advising each other on techniques or adjustments their making, so overall, they can make the game of golf enjoyable and attract repeat players.

“I’m always talking with other supers,” he said. “We all are part of Golf Course Superintendents’ Association of America Rocky Mountain Chapter. We get together once a month during the season to have meetings and meet new people in the business. And part of that time is also spent on playing golf. This helps me see different courses in different ways.

“I am able to take some of those ideas or suggestions and make them work for Pelican Lakes. The superintendents who I talk to on a regular basis would include Scott Robbins at Ptarmigan Country Club, Kyle Merritt at Eaton Country Club, Griff Pattinson at Highland Meadows and Kevin Klemenz at Harmony Golf Club. I have a network of highly qualified individuals that I can rely on for suggestions and input.

“This helps me with my own decisions. My crew is great and help with decisions, and it is also nice to know I have others that can offer different perspectives.”

Orr is always looking toward the future and what improvements he can make to Pelican Lakes, which celebrated its 20th birthday in July of 2019.

“I am very excited for the future. We were able to budget in some new tools to help the course’s health and playability,” he said. “Let’s start with the v375 verticutter. This machine goes behind a tractor to remove thatch out of the fairways. This will help the health of the sports turf and make the fairways much firmer for our golfers. Another addition this year will be the spray program we will start for the fairways. This includes liquid fertilizer on these surfaces every month. One thing to also mention is the growth regulators. This allows the plant to grow vertical instead of horizontal. This will help with the healing of divots faster, mowing less, and improve all around playability. Another project I am working on is the Par 3 yardage markers on all the tee boxes for Falls course.”

In a few short years, Pelican Lakes will welcome another 18-hole course to its family when the neighboring RainDance National Golf Club opens. The course is in the RainDance master-planned community of Windsor and is also owned by Lind. Orr and his team have an integral role in developing and maintaining the course, and it’s a task he is thrilled about.

“I am very excited about this new course that I can’t even begin to put it into words,” he said.

“This course and the amenities it will offer are going to be a great addition to our Windsor community and Water Valley. I think what excites me the most is it is an 18-hole course with an amazing design and features. For example, the indentations in the landscape will create beauty and optimal playability. I can’t wait to be part of RainDance and watch it come to life.”

While Orr may work in the golf business, he has a lot of friends who aren’t golfers. He’s often describing to them how to play the course and to focus on other features Pelican Lakes has to offer.

“I always tell my friends to have fun. Golf is a timeless sport and can be entertaining, especially when playing such a beautiful and challenging course, like Pelican Lakes,” he said. “I also tell them to visit the Sand Bar or Grillhouse for lunch or dinner. I also tell them to drink some adult beverages and to not let all the water get in their head. The course is one that can take even the best of players and challenges them. It is a mental sport and Pelican challenges you to think, and even over think to accomplish the best shots.”

AN ESSAY BY HANNAH WIEST WHS CLASS OF 2020

In my family, I am the youngest of three. My whole life, I’ve admired my older sister,

Sammi. I’ve been the recipient of her toys, clothes, books, advice, and so on, for as long as I can remember. I graciously accept all these, yet, as I grow up, I’ve developed an eagerness to create my own direction. She has paved an amazing path for me but I know my path is different. This mindset recently presented itself in my search for colleges. While I was a freshman in high school (I am a senior now), my sister was a senior. After she graduated, she moved to Corvallis, Oregon, to attain a degree in Engineering at Oregon State University (OSU). She’s a junior now, and has loved every aspect of life in Corvallis. I, too, would love to go to OSU for college. The catch, though, is that I need to experience college on my own. My own choice. My own studies. My own town. My own expectations.

This led me to search for schools on the East Coast. I chose the opposite side of the country.

I know, it’s a bit excessive just to “prove a point” but my desire for independence has taken me in a promising direction. Last month, I went on a trip to tour colleges in Virginia and Massachusetts for University of Virginia (UVA) and Tufts University, respectively. Although I have plenty of experience in the West Coast, the East Coast was a refreshing change of pace. The accents, styles, mannerisms, and all around energy, felt new and exciting. Virginia has this rich history that I’ve learned about in class. UVA, specifically, is nearly 200 years old, and was established by Thomas Jefferson himself. It’s one thing to read about the third president of the U.S. in textbooks, but to be walking through President Jefferson’s living ideas was impressive.

Boston, Massachusetts flaunted its intriguing history as well. From Freedom Trail to the iconic Cheers bar to bookstores with an undeniable old-book smell, this city was a struggle to part with. As a photographer, I found my little piece of Heaven. Being the youngest child has its perks; I have two amazing siblings to learn and take advice from. At the same time, it takes extra effort to have an authentic, individual experience. As college is a major time for growth, I made a conscious decision to go out of my comfort zone and search for something completely unique to me. While I have not chosen a school yet I am confident in the direction I am heading. As you are searching for schools, I would encourage you to be open to new experiences. Don’t allow yourself to be guided by fear or outside expectiations. It’s a beginning of a new chapter of life, take full advantage.

As one drives through the community of Water Valley in Windsor, they will see the landscape graced by sculptures of the signature pelicans the residents have come to love so much. The likeness of these iconic birds has been recreated all over the community by artist and sculptor Sheldon Roberts.

Roberts grew up in Manitou Springs, CO and was inspired by his grandmother Mary Ann, who was a wonderful sculpture and painter in her own right. Growing up, Roberts always had a knack for art and science. He explains, “I understand the way things relate to each other.”

As Roberts was learning the trade of sculpting, he hustled for an apprenticeship with Robert Henderson, who is also known as the war bird sculptor. Henderson creates a lot of work for the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and is well-known for his work with bronze. He was incredibly influential in the education and progression of Roberts’ work.

After he completed his apprenticeship, Rober ts opened a chainsaw art business in Manitou Springs where he would meet the Windsor resident who discovered his work and brought him to Northern Colorado. That Windsor resident was Viki Lind, wife to Water Valley and RainDance master-planned community developer Martin Lind.

Viki saw the sculpture Roberts did in Windsor and was instantly inspired to commission him for a very personal art piece and gift for her husband. The Lind’s are passionate about giving honor and thanks to service men and women, and Viki’s gift to her husband was no exception. Roberts used a dead tree on the Lind’s property to create a carving of a serviceman wrapped in a flag. While Roberts was carving, Jesus’ arms came to life.

“I wanted something that represented Martin as a person and what better way than a piece of art that shows God, family and country,” said Viki about her husband. “I still cannot imagine a better way to represent all the things I love about him.”

T h e r e l a t i o n s h i p b e t we e n R o b e r t s a n d the Linds has been on-going ever since.

Roberts completed a giant pelican on hole 12 of Pelican Lakes golf course, the wood carvings inside the Grillhouse at Pelican Lakes, as well as the regal metal pelicans in flight outside the restaurant. That sculpture is aptly named “Lake Patrol.”

“When I saw Sheldon’s incredible talent it was a no brainer to commission him to expand his art here in Windsor. His hard work, combined with God-given raw artistic talent, is manifesting into timeless beautiful amenities for all to enjoy. To say he’s a one and only is an understatement,” said Martin Lind.

Most recently, Sheldon’s artwork can be seen in the roundabout at the intersection of 7th Street and New Liberty Road in Windsor. This piece features pelicans in flight that was donated to the city by Martin Lind. The artwork has been dubbed “Valley Patrol.”

In addition to his commissions, Roberts is also constantly working on personal pieces. His passion project right now is called “Heir to the Throne,” and is a majestic sculpture of a lion and a cub. His intention is to call attention to the journey and hardship lions endure to survive from bir th to adulthood. It’s a limited edition set with only 52 models in production to be sold. The first one has already been purchased and Roberts is hopeful that this art piece will speak to many people.

Roberts and Lind said they will continue to work together to enrich the lives of Windsor residents.

Lind’s passion for honoring the landscape of his hometown is evident in all the projects he pursues.

Roberts said he is always open to taking on his own apprentice in the hopes of passing on the vast knowledge he has to the next generation.

Windsor Charter Academy Grows in Student Numbers and Accolades Windsor Charter Academy is growing its student body, its reputation within Northern Colorado and its campus. Opening its doors in 2001 as a K-5 school, Windsor Charter Academy was founded by a passionate group of families dedicated to providing their children with rigorous educational opportunities. Fast forward to today, and the school has expanded to serve over 1,300 students at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Last fall, Windsor Charter Academy ’s elementary school was awarded the Colorado Depar t m ent o f Ed u c at i o n’s Jo h n Ir w i n School of Excellence Award. The school has received the award three years in a row.

At its early college high school, students have the opportunity to earn an Associate of Arts degree through its partnership with Aims Community College.

And starting in fall 2020, that offering will be ex panded to include an A ssociate of Science degree. “ We are excited to give our students the opportunity to complete a two-year degree while in high school. Our students receive a full high school experience, attend prom, and celebrate homecoming, all while earning college-level credits,” says Hannah Mancina, Director of High School Education.

Theresa Tickler, early college advisor, shared that “parents know that if their student graduates with an associate degree, free of charge, they can save thousands of dollars. W hen you have multiple children, that can add up to several hundred thousand dollars. It’s a no-brainer for families.”

“In 2018, 91 percent of our high school students graduated having completed at least one college course and 59 percent completed an associate degree. That means almost all of our families are saving on college tuition,” said Tickler.

Preparing students for college-level curriculum starts early. Windsor Charter Academy ’s elementary and middle school teachers make sure students are prepared to succeed in high school and beyond.

“At our elementary and middle schools, we use the Core Knowledge Sequence,” says Jeremy Schriner, director of middle school education. “The premise of the Core Knowledge Sequence is that knowledge builds upon knowledge. Ancient civilizations might be introduced in elementary school and then built upon in middle and high school.”

Kelly Seilbach, director of elementary school education, mentioned that parents love the Core Knowledge Sequence. Recently, a parent sent Seilbach an email, sharing “it’s pretty amazing that when I walked into my daughter’s kindergarten class, they were learning about Machu Picchu.

W hen I was in kindergarten, I guarantee I didn’t even know there was a country named Peru.” “ We are building a foundation early, and it allows our students to create meaningful educational links, from elementary school through high school,” says Seilbach.

“John Irwin awards are given to schools that demonstrate exceptional academic achievement over time,” Seilbach said. “Our teachers and students are dedicated to academic achievement and receiving the John Irwin Award demonstrates that fact. But what we truly celebrate is that, in partnership with our parents, we collectively work to build a strong school community where students feel supported in all areas of their life, not just in academics.”

NoCo fruit trees Usher us into Spring Spring is on its way and with it comes the amazing blossoms popping up all over town. One might be surprised to know that deciduous fruit trees, such as apples, pears, apricots, sweet and tart cherries, peaches, nectarines, and plums do really well in Colorado. The state once had some of the largest orchards west of the Mississippi, especially on the Western Slope where there are still many orchards. All of these amazing trees not only provide the fruit they are known for but also the amazing white and pink blossoms that grace the NoCo landscape. It’s a true indicator that spring has sprung.

The best places in the area to view these gorgeous showy trees are taking a walk through The Promenade Shops at Centerra and Benson Park Sculpture Garden in Loveland (mostly non-fruiting crab apple trees), The grounds of the Budweiser Event Center (crab apples treesP), checking out holes number 2 and 7 at Pelican Lakes Golf Club (apple trees) or a stroll through the RainDance neighborhood in Windsor (cherry, peach, plum, and apple trees). While the trees in RainDance are brand new, every year the show will get better and better. The tree blossoms are fleeting, but they prepare us to usher in spring in a joyous way.
