Cabinetry

A key focal point of any kitchen both in terms of aesthetics and practical usage, the impact of kitchen cabinets cannot be understated. What’s the most popular look right now?

“Hands down, white Shaker doors are the favorite, by a landslide,” says Johnson Cabinetry & Refacing Owner Carl Johnson. “The clean, modern look really brightens up spaces.”

While white is timeless and elegant as well as on-trend, however, Johnson says there are plenty of considerations to bear in mind, as well as differing approaches that can either complement cabinetry or add some pop, depth, and character through contrast. “People are embracing two-toned schemes, such as white uppers and darker bases,

or white perimeters with a darker island,” he says. “The effect is really striking.”

Storage

When it comes to cabinets – and countertops, for that matter – at least equal in importance to look and style is storage. Single-level islands

While two-tiered islands offering the duality of a counter-height work surface and a bar-height eating area once had their day, today the one-level, counter-height islands are far more popular. Single-level islands remove obstructions, making kitchens look and feel more open and airy. oday’s kitchen cabinets come in endless hues, styles and storage solutions. We reached out to the experts at Budget Home Supply in Longmont to get their take on the latest.

“We enjoy working with customers by having them pick out the colors or stains that speak to them,” says Carmen Gibson, kitchen and bath manager at Budget Home Supply.

“Then our experts can help them edit or complement their vision.”

Knowing customer habits is especially important. “While some customers require more drawer space, for example, others who bake a lot need a cabinet that allows a heavy mixer to remain on the cabinet shelf,” Gibson says. While every kitchen is different, here are some of the latest trends for modern lifestyles.

Hue trends for kitchen cabinets are ever-changing. “While gray and white cabinets continue to be extremely popular, new trends are leaning toward blues, greens and coffee-stained wood tones,” Gibson says. “Two-tone kitchens are as fashionable as ever, and the texture

Floating vanities, backlit mirrors, smart toilets and wood-look tile topped the list. Many items were perfect solutions for COVID. Smart toilets offer less-germy options like a selfclose lid, touchless flush or bacteriakilling light under the lid, but Pat Osiecki and Tim Apodaca, business partners and owners of Pro Marble Installation, say Northern Colorado trends are slightly different.

“A lot of our business this last year has been taking bathtubs out and turning them into showers,” says Apodaca.“Many people are just getting older and don’t want to step over the bathtub anymore.There are also others who have a five-piece bathroom and realized they never use the bathtub.

They want to take out their soaker tub and enlarge the shower.”

“We also get some customers who ask for heated floors. They’ve become a lot easier to install,” says Apodaca.

“We can do it under the laminate now.”

While the duo say they aren’t seeing many requests for backlit mirrors, they are getting many requests to replace large mirrors with smaller ones. “ We’re seeing a trend of our customers going to individual mirrors and taking down the giant ones.

Probably 75 percent of our customers either want us to replace their mirror or are planning on changing out the mirror once we finish our work,” says Apodaca.

Popular bathroom color schemes are white and gray. “ We see white cabi nets, gray cabinets, white and gray flooring and some black. It’s what we’ve seen for the better part of the last two years,” says Apodaca. “As for fixtures we mostly see nickel. Sometimes if the bathroom colors are tan and brown they will have oil rubbed bronze fixtures. Matte black is really starting to make a run at popularity.”

ith interest rates on home loans still fairly low, this may be a good time to refinance your home and get into a new 15-year or 30-year fixed APR home loan.

• Does it make sense to refinance, especially with the closing costs?

Closing costs • Generally speaking, you should be able to recoup your closing costs within 24 to 36 months.

• For example, with $8,000 in closing costs, you should be saving roughly $200 to $300 per month on your new payment.

Are you staying in your house or planning a move?

nfinished Furniture Colorado offers customers some of the most carefully designed and painstakingly crafted furniture available in the state.

But as Owner Richard Lambert notes, the store’s most specialized pieces are only a starting point for someone looking to make a living space feel truly unique and personalized. According to Lambert, some of the store’s most popular items are remarkably versatile, even though they have been carefully

“We have manufacturers, builders and craftsmen that do customization of furniture,” Lambert said, adding that the store features artisanal furniture from local builders, Amish manufacturers and others. “When you’re talking about bookcases, entertainment centers, writing desks

– these can be fit to your needs and your space.”

Specifically, a bookshelf can morph to fit the demands of a specific study.

This doesn’t mean chopping up an existing piece of furniture, or going with the old college-dorm model of wooden planks and bricks.

“One of the nice things that’s easy to do is to flush cut the crown molding so that you can put two bookcases together – they look like they were built together. That’s one of the ways that they can be customized,” Lambert said. “And by adding pieces, taking a couple of bookcases, putting a TV console in the middle, you can create your own, personalized entertainment center.”

Physical dimensions and arrangement are only one part of making a set of furniture unique.

What Should I Look for When Buying Home Insurance?

here are a few things to think about when shopping around for homeowners insurance.

The company

“Foremost is the company, you want a reputable company. Usually someone you’ve heard of would be good,” said Sue Helfrich, owner of Helfrich and Associates, an Allstate agency.

“Will they be there at the time of the claim? (A home) is their biggest asset, don’t cut corners here.”

Next up is representation. Is the customer willing to call a 1-800 number and get a different person each time, or do they want a local person with whom they can build a trusting relationship?

The property

Then there’s the property itself.

When purchasing a home, the most important question for an insurance agent is, “How old is the roof ?”

The roof needs to be able to sustain substantial hail and wind events in

Colorado. An insurance agent has 30 days after a client closes on a home to go inspect the new home. If the agent says a new roof is needed, that’s unfortunate for the client since they have already closed.

Helfrich said that Fort Collins now requires roofs to be hail-resistant on new construction. Greeley has not done this yet.

The policy

All basic policies usually cover four main items: the dwelling itself; detached structures like sheds, garages and fences; personal property; and liability if someone gets hurt on the property. Helfrich said liability is critical in our litigious society.

Anyone, even if they’re trespassing, can sue a homeowner if they get hurt on your property.

Helfrich said it’s important to pay attention to what a policy doesn’t cover, rather than what it does cover.

You want to make sure there isn’t a limit to what is covered under basic wind, hail, fire, or lightning coverage.

You also want to make sure that if you make a claim, you will get “replacement cost” rather than “actual cash value.” Replacement value means that if a television is five years old, many policies will replace the TV with one of similar value by today’s standards. Actual cash value would mean the policy would depreciate that TV and give you the cash for the current value of that old TV (maybe $50).

“The insurance’s obligation is to put you in the same position as before the loss,” Helfrich said.

Usually, home insurance claims are settled on replacement cost value, although there might be an exception if the home is really old. Cars, on the other hand, are settled on actual cash value.

The cost

When weighing the cost of homeowner’s insurance, pay attention to the deductible. Like, health insurance, a slightly higher deductible

offsets the cost of the premium.

(The premium is how much you pay annually for the insurance, the deductible is how much you pay outof-pocket in a claim before receiving money back for that claim). But you want to make sure you can pay that deductible if you have a loss.

In health insurance, a young healthy person might risk a higher deductible, knowing they’re likely to be healthy for longer. Similarly, in the house insurance world, the age of the roof is the thing to pay attention to. A newer roof can withstand more hail damage, so a homeowner might be able to then stomach a larger deductible.

“We should all have tile roofs like in Arizona!” Helfrich said.

“Knowledge is power,” she said.

hether you are recovering from a natural disaster, doing repairs, adding on to your home or renovating a room, you may decide you need help with that project you are finally tackling.

That’s where a contractor comes in.

A contractor is a company or person that you hire to provide materials and labor to complete a job.

Some contractors focus on a specific type of project, like plumbing or tiling or painting, while others will work on any type of project. For larger projects, a general contractor may also serve as a project manager working with other vendors to get all the work done.

Hiring a reliable and trustworthy contractor is one of the most important steps for your project.

Hire the right one and you can relax knowing that your project is in good hands. Hire the wrong one and you could be facing a wide range of problems from unfinished work to being sued if workers aren’t paid.

Consider these tips when hiring anybody to work in your home.

RESEARCH AND GATHER INFORMATION Search for a contractor’s business profile at BBB.org for free information on their history of complaints, read verified customer reviews and see if they are an accredited business. BBB Accredited Businesses make a commitment to uphold BBB’s accreditation standards including: to build trust, advertise honestly, tell the truth, be transparent, honor their promises, be responsive to their customers, safeguard privacy and embody integrity. Also search for the name of the company online along with “Complaint”, “Review” or “Scam” to find different results. Ask the company if employees and subcontractors undergo a background check. Are they trained and certified?

What identification will they show when they come to your home?

ASK FOR REFERENCES Ask the contractor for a list of recent local references you may contact. Ask the references about the services performed and their overall experience with the contractor and the quality of the work. Ask if the contractor stuck to the estimated budget and completion date for the project. If possible, inspect the contractor’s work yourself. Ask if the contractor is a member of a professional association that has standards or a code of ethics.

ASK FOR MULTIPLE QUOTES You should always shop around and get at least three quotes from different businesses. Make sure all bids consider the same set of criteria.

Remember that the lowest bid may not necessarily be the best bid; if one bid is significantly lower than the others, the contractor may be cutting corners or may not understand your work requirements.

GET IT IN WRITING Always get estimates in writing and never let any work begin without a written and signed contract. Do not be pressured into signing an agreement before you are ready and make sure you read and understand everything before signing. The contract should include contact information, start and complete dates, a detailed description of the exact work to be done, any material costs,

payment arrangements and warranty information. Specify who is to obtain necessary building permits and who is responsible for clean-up. Make sure all verbal promises are included in the contract. Ask how much work will be subcontracted and ask for information on the subcontractors. Ask questions if you do not understand any part of the contract. Never sign an incomplete or partially blank contract.

VERIFY LICENSE AND INSURANCE Always be sure that the company you decide to work with has the necessary licenses and insurance to work in your region. In the United States, you can get to your state’s licensing agency to learn more here.

CONFIRM BUILDING PERMITS Your contractor must have the correct permits before starting your project. They will usually obtain the permits, but you will probably pay for them. That should be detailed in your contract. Request that all final inspections be completed by the local building official prior to final payment.

INQUIRE ABOUT A LIEN WAIVER A lien waiver, in the United States, is a statement from your contractor that says all suppliers and subcontractors have been paid for their work. In some Canadian provinces, there is a mandatory Builders Lien holdback, so

ensure you understand any financial obligations you may be liable for.

THINK ABOUT FUTURE SERVICE ISSUES. Make sure you are aware of your warranty coverage and how to deal with service issues.

ARRANGE A PAYMENT SCHEDULE Never pay in full up front. Stagger your payments so your final payment is not due until the work is complete and you have fully inspected it. Do not pay cash; make sure your check is written to a company, not an individual, or that you use a credit card. Paying with a credit card will provide some recourse should the job not be completed as stated in the contract.

GET A RECEIPT Request a receipt marked “Paid in Full” when the job is completed and your final payment made.

KEEP YOUR CONTRACT Hold on to your contract for future reference or if any questions arise after the work is complete.

o you have a gamer kiddo who’d play video games 24/7 if you didn’t cut them off ? If their joystick is starting to resemble a permanent appendage, maybe they should design their own games.

Ed and Jeanene Gage, owners of Code Ninjas in Greeley teach 5 to 14-year-olds to write video game code. Drop the kids off for afterschool enrichment or summer camp.

“Kids are excited to come here.

They are learning something fun, valuable and preparing for their future,” Gage said.

honda Snowden couldn’t believe her eyes.

Her family home, which she inherited when

her mother passed in 2018, had been turned into a trashed-out drug den by, of all people, her own daughter.

Should she sell and walk away?

That’s what any reasonable person would do, and in fact that’s what she wanted to do. But Rhonda’s gut said no. This was the home she grew up in, where her high school friends would come over to ice skate, sit around bonfires, and just have good, old-fashioned fun.

She wanted the home to once again become a gathering spot for

friends and family and a place where she and her husband, Timothy, could enjoy their lake-lodge abode in their retirement years.

Rhonda contacted several contractors with little luck in finding one.

Then one day she and her granddaughter happened by an open house in her Loveland neighborhood and stopped to take a look.

That’s when Rhonda’s luck began to change.

The home, done as a flip, featured

design elements that were exactly what she was looking for in her own home project.

The contractor on the flip?

Mighty Hand Construction LLC of Fort Collins, a fairly new startup that found almost instant success doing premium residential remodels and additions as well as custom homes in northern Colorado.

Micah Applegate founded the company in 2017 after “quite clearly” being told by God to move to Fort Collins from Arvada and start the

company. Being a man of faith, he named the company Mighty Hand Construction LLC, based on Ecclesiastes 9:10: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.”

In four short years, the construction company has grown to more than 30 team members, including his two brothers, Noah and Jesse, as well as high integrity and professional in house crews interested in bettering the world around them.

So was it luck that Rhonda Snowden happened upon MHC? Or divine intervention? You decide.

“We stepped in and helped redream the whole project,” Micah Applegate said. The garage was turned into a master suite with access to a private deck and a back entrance to the house; a back porch, anchored by a large pine log, is now a sitting room with never-ending outdoor views; and the newly vaulted ceiling in the great room provides room for

ometimes the best way to start anew is from the ground up, or in the case of a remodeling project, from the floor up.

And until the world becomes a safer place in which to travel, many homeowners are now using their vacation funds for home remodeling projects that had once been left on the back burner until who knows when.

Those projects – be they a wholehome redo, turning a bedroom into a home office (or yoga studio) or reimagining that ho-hum master bath into a luxurious spa – all need the perfect flooring.

So to help make sense of flooring trends for 2021, we checked in with one local expert.

Kelley McDonald of McDonald Carpet One in Boulder said, “We always tell people to have fun with their projects, to think out of the box and to open their vision to try and do different things.”

For instance, she suggested, “Try a bold, vibrant color or install the hardwood on diagonal, put vinyl plank on a wall as a backboard for a bed. The possibilities are endless with today’s advancements in technology.”

Her best advice? “Don’t be afraid to jump in.”

“Luxury vinyl is one of the most well-known pet-friendly floors,” said McDonald. “It comes in waterproof, stain-resistant and scuff-proof styles, so there is no need to worry about a

dog getting stuck in the seams or cat scratches on the boards.”

OTHER 2021 FLOORING TRENDS

Wide planks

The wider you go, the fewer the seams in your floor. Five inches is considered the standard “wide” plank, but other options range from 3 inches to 20 inches in a variety of species, with some floors mixing different widths for an even more upscale look. Want more drama?

Longer boards 7- to 11-foot in length will get you there.

Hardwoods

If you want a hardwood floor that’s on trend, you’ll want to look at hardwoods in lighter colors, such as white oak with a natural finish. If you prefer darker wood, gray/brown planks will be more to your liking.

Tile

Tile remains a top choice for water-prone areas such as kitchens, mudrooms and bathrooms, and now includes tile that resembles hardwood, marble, stone, terrazzo and concrete along with decorative and encaustic styles. The latter are ceramic or concrete tiles in which the pattern or figure on the surface is a product of different colors of clay.

Carpet

Say bye-bye to beige and boring.

Improving the Air You Breathe

T

he pandemic has brought Northern Coloradans indoors with more hours working remotely and limited social outings – and breathing stale air makes the experience less than pleasant.

“Not only are we sleeping at home, we’re working there all day breathing particulates in,” said Jeff Richard, general manager of Northern Colorado Air, Inc., a locally-owned and family-operated HVAC installation, service and repair company in Fort Collins in business since 1992. “There’s lots of contaminants in our air, stuff we don’t want to absorb into our lungs.”

Before COVID-19 struck, people already spent 70 percent of their time in their home, and now it’s even more. But viruses aren’t their only concern. Those with asthma, allergies, compromised lung function and other conditions do better in clean air – and even those without a condition can get the occasional headache from poor air quality.

Without some kind of air filtering system in place, the air in a home, office or other building can contain those hard-to-see dust particulates, allergens (including pollen, mold spores and pet dander), and volatile organic compounds, VOCs. “If you look at the sunlight after you vacuumed and look at the air, there are millions of things flying around in the air, and we breathe that in,” Richard said.

Air Purification Solutions

Northern Colorado Air offers a few solutions for cleaner, fresher air from the installation of air purification and filtration systems to the regular cleaning of a furnace. The company installs proven, name-brand air conditioning systems, furnaces and heating systems, as well as HVAC equipment and replacement parts, at homes and businesses along the Front Range, mainly in Fort Collins,

Longmont, Loveland and Windsor.

The systems run efficiently, reliably, quietly and safely, while minimizing operational costs.

Lennox PureAir is one of Northern Colorado Air’s air purification systems, which is compatible with most HVAC systems without requiring additional energy costs. It is a three-part filtration system that uses ultraviolet light and a specialized filter to remove more than 99 percent of dust and allergens and more than 90 percent of bioaerosols that include airborne viruses, as well as any ozone emissions that could be in the air.

It also destroys volatile organic compounds and odors from cooking, pets, solvents and cleaning products.

“All the air that goes into your furnace would be going through that filtration system,” Richard said.

It uses bi-polar ionization and a specialized technology to remove dust, allergens, airborne and surface bacteria and viruses, and

odors from cooking, pets and other musty sources.

“It kills anything moving through it as long as the air moves properly through the duct system,” Richard said.

The Reme Halo works on the supply side of the air stream, while the Lennox works on the return side of the duct work.

“None of those units produce ozone,” Richard said. “Obviously, we breathe some in because we’re outside. We just don’t want mechanized ozone in your house.”

Richard gets asked if the installation of an air purification system means no more dusting – he has to tell customers they’ll still need to dust but not as much.

“You’re going to live a healthier life, not breathing dirt into your lungs, plus your air will be more comfortable throughout the house,” Richard said.

Northern Colorado Air offers a free indoor air-quality analysis using Air Advice to evaluate air quality in the home and to provide a detailed report of the level of particulates and allergens. A plan can be drafted using the report as a basis for recommending, installing and maintaining an air purification product. The company also offers free in-home replacement quotes on all of its other products and most of its services.

Northern Colorado Air has three departments to offer its whole house air-purification and comfort systems.

The first is for new construction installation and the second is for existing home retrofits of airconditioning and furnace units.

o keep your home HVAC system running well, you need to give your system an annual checkup. To help you out, we have created this HVAC maintenance checklist with insight from Greeley Furnace Company.

He suggests: “Make sure the filter is clean and be sure your outdoor unit is free and clear of debris, specifically on the condenser coil. Many people believe that if they set their thermostat to 65 instead of 72 it will cool their home faster, but in fact it can cause the system to freeze,the system is either on or off basically.

So, it’s best to set your thermostat at your desired temperature instead of the much lower setting.”

Stevens added that many family homes have upgraded their HVAC system to a newer high efficiency system and they don’t realize it will require more routine maintenance than their old system in order to maintain its efficiency rating.

Stevens added that the most important thing is actually the installation. “There is only so much we can do if the unit is not installed properly,” he said.

eing a homeowner means never finishing your long checklist of building and landscaping tasks to get done each season.

“Swim spas have been especially popular. We have customers who are training for the Ironman. Parents have gotten them for their kids who are swimmers in high school and college,” Cindy Strick says, noting that swim spas are much less expensive to install than a full-size swimming pool because they don’t involve excavation and require less maintenance.

echnology is bringing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems out of the dark for today's homeowners who are increasingly involved in making sure their homes are safe and comfortable.

Following are five HVAC innovations that are changing the future of our homes, according to Scott Butterworth,owner/operations manager of McCreery and Sun of Colorado, which is located in Greeley.

1. "Probably the most common concern and the one people are talking about right now is indoor air quality," primarily out of concern for COVID-19 transmission and allergies, Butterworth said. New air-quality systems are made for today's homes that can trap allergens and germs because homes are better insulated. One air purifier by Honeywell, for example, uses ultraviolet light to help clear the area of allergens, mold and even odors. Another company, Global Plasma Solutions, uses technology to produce positive and negative ions to rid the air of viruses, bacteria,volatile organic compounds,smoke and other airborne issues.

Butterworth said he tested the GPS equipment in his own home prior to offering it to customers.He noticed the system filter became quite dark in the first few weeks,indicating that it was pulling particles from the air efficiently.After running the system for six months, the filters were light gray, which showed that the air was much cleaner.

2. It's no surprise that homes are becoming smarter,as in smart technology.And that applies to heating and air conditioning,as well.Programmable thermostats have given way to smartphone apps that allow homeowners to control heat,air and timing from a distance."Home automation is another big thing.Originally,we got into it through WiFi thermostats - communicating on your phone to see what your house was doing," Butterworth said.But technology now allows even more control by alerting homeowners to issues such as water leaks.And customers are requesting more connections to services such as Alexa to keep tabs on their heating and cooling in a more targeted and personal approach that matches their needs.

3. High-efficiency equipment is becoming increasingly important in today's home. The idea of saving energy and being kinder to the environment is appealing to many customers. Butterworth said, "I think there's a lot of people who don't quite understand it. But this new equipment saves on utility costs," he said. "This efficiency helps with comfort in the house, and the heating system can run a little longer as far as the blower operating, and it saves you money."

He said he recently led a training class on a highefficiency tankless water heater. "Right now, a traditional water heater will try to keep 40 or 50 gallons of water heated, which is not efficient. But we now have the ability to go to 96 percent or even 99 percent on a tankless water system that only heats the water that is being used. It saves money and reduces carbon emissions."

Solar systems also are becoming more accessible in homes,McCreery said.New technology allows energy generated from solar to be stored, so concerns about reliability due to cloudy days or low sun exposure no longer exist. McCreery and Sun installs solar water heating systems and offers a variety of solar services, such as panel repair via certified technicians.Innovation in photovoltaic systems is allowing customers to craft energy sources to their needs. Butterworth said he had a customer use a photovoltaic system to heat their floors in addition to providing their lighting.

McCreery and Sun works with the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute and Xcel Energy to help customers quality for solar rebates, which can offset additional front-end expenses for equipment and help homeowners save on utility costs.

5. Innovation also has reached customer service. The COVID-19 pandemic, out of necessity, prompted additional safety measures, Butterworth said, such as more attention to cleaning and wearing masks.

Some of those safety measures will continue, such as asking customers if they prefer that technicians wear masks and using bags to remove air filters to reduce contamination. That attention to detail is being used to keep customers safe as well as employees.

Ways to Lead a Greener Lifestyle at Home

dopting a series of small eco-friendly habits at home isn’t just great for the environment. These sustainable strategies can also save you money on your utility bills, and, in some cases, lessen health risks.

From radon testing to detecting water leaks and taking energy-saving measures, we’ve rounded up ways that you and your family can lead a more sustainable and safer lifestyle, starting at home. Ahead of Earth Day (it’s April 22 this year), here are some easy-to-implement tips that are good for you, your wallet and Mother Earth.

SAVING ENERGY (AND MONEY) AT HOME

A home that runs on natural gas uses three times less energy than an all-electric home, according to Atmos Energy, which delivers natural gas to roughly 120,000 customers throughout Colorado, including Greeley and surrounding areas in the northeast.

An efficient energy source, natural gas will give you immediate heat for cooking, bathing and drying clothes.

To help you trim back on your utility bills and conserve even more energy, you can make some easy adjustments at home. Here are some energy-saving tips Atmos Energy provided the Greeley Tribune: Avoid blocking vents with furniture, area rugs or draperies.

Have your heating contractor inspect and seal ductwork to make sure your home has adequate air flow. Leaky ducts can lose up to one-fifth of the air passing through them.

Use a programmable or smart thermostat to turn down temps automatically. For example, lowering your thermostat from 70 degrees Fahrenheit to 65 degrees at night can save you $10 for every $100 of heating costs.

Insulate older windows using storm or thermal windows with doublepaned glass. You can also seal leaks around windows, doors and openings by using caulking and weather stripping.

Take advantage of Colorado’s famed sunshine! Let in the sun’s warmth on sunny days by opening draperies and blinds. Just remember to close them at night to insulate against cold air.

Put water-flow restrictors in showerheads and faucets to scale back on your hot water use. Did you know that water-saving showerheads and faucet aerators can save up to 50 percent on your hot water use.

TEST FOR RADON

Did you know that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer?

Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless radioactive gas caused by the natural breakdown of uranium.

The state of Colorado has abundant uranium deposits, and nearly 50 percent of all homes in the state have high radon levels, explains Gabri

“The only way to know if your home has radon is to test,” Vergara says. “High radon levels can be easily reduced by installing a radon mitigation system, which typically costs no more than the cost of replacing your hot water heater.”

“Testing your home is easy and doesn’t require a professional,” Vergara says. “Reducing the radon level in your home could reduce your and your family’s cancer risk.”

If you determine you have radon levels of 4 or greater picocuries per liter (pCi/L) of air, you can install a mitigation system.

CHECK FOR WATER LEAKS

The average American household wastes more than 10,000 gallons of water each year from easy-to-fix water leaks. To put that in perspective, you could wash 270 loads of laundry with all of that wasted water. The City of Greeley Water Department participates in a Fix a Leak Week, a March event that helps educate residents on the easy steps they can take to save water.

Here are three easy steps the city recommends for conserving water:

Check for leaks. A simple way to detect toilet leaks, for instance, is by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank. Wait 10 minutes and then see if it appears in the toilet bowl.

You’ll also want to look for leaky faucets.

Twist and tighten hose and pipe connections. Grab a wrench and firmly turn any leaking faucets or showerheads. To save your household more than 500 gallons each year, add a WaterSense labeled aerator onto each bathroom faucet to conserve water without noticing a difference in flow.

Replace fixtures with WaterSense labeled models if you can’t fix the drips. These models are certified to use 20 percent less water and perform as well or better than standard models.

Replacing a showerhead along can save you up to 2,700 gallons.
