Placing in three categories this year, Carelli’s of Boulder has “developed quite a local following,” said Greg Carelli, who opened his namesake eatery as a sub shop in 1991. Today interspersed fireplaces, birch wood accents, mosaic tiles and warm lighting create an intimate, unpretentious ambience, and the classic Northern and Southern Italian dishes please diverse palates. According to Manager Gabby Mares, that’s because it is family owned and the fresh seafood comes from Florida. “You can taste the freshness in the food,” she said. “It’s like a little getaway.” Some of the most popular items are oysters and the king crab, lobster roll, fish and chips and the almond-crusted hog fish. Like all Colorado restaurants, Big Mac & Little Lu’s has to limit seating, separate the tables, and sanitize extensively. Gabby said, “It was tough at first, but our regulars have been very helpful.
