James E. Miller (Jim), 63, of Fountain, CO, went to meet the Lord Friday, January 3, 2020. Jim was born October 8, 1956 in Pueblo, CO, to Patricia (Pat) Gore and James L. Miller. Jim graduated from Florence High School in 1974. Jim helped his mother raise his younger brothers and sisters. He served in the Navy for a short time and was a mechanic by trade. Jim is survived by his mother, Pat Washburn of Canon City; son,

Ryan (Winter) Miller of Canon City; daughter, Jamie Miller of Fountain, CO'; brothers, Robbie (Tina) of Hubert, North Carolina, Wade and Chuck Miller of Canon City; sisters, Tina (Stoney) Adams of Canon City, Ginny (Terry) Boettler of Coal Creek, Ann (Larry) Nix of Canon City; several nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his father, James L. Miller; grandparents; and wife, Marsha Miller.

Kelly was born April 28, 1965 in Leadville, Colorado. The youngest of three brothers. He grew up there enjoying the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, and skiing. He worked as a miner at the Black Cloud mine and for a short time at the Climax Mine before moving to Canon City in 1995 and going to work at Holcim. He loved nature and enjoyed feeding the birds later in life as well as watching the many deer that hang out in Canon. He was proceeded in death by brothers Luke and Wade and his Step-father Jim Hewlett.

He is survived by his mother Mary Hewlett, son Chris (Denver), daughter Jessica (Utah), Jim (kristol) Hewlett, Yvonne (Tim) Nabors. Uncles and aunts, Frank and Betty White, Bob Thompson, Tracy and Linda Thompson, Gene and Lee Thompson, and Donna Downs, Neices, Nephews, and Cousins. There will be a gathering of family and friends at the family home on Saturday the 25th between 11:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. Private inurnment in Leadville. Services entrusted to Harwood Funeral Home.

Kenny Roberts, 65, passed away January 12, 2020 surrounded by family. Kenny was born and lived his life in Fremont county. He married the love of his life Vickie (Carmack) Roberts. Kenny loved hunting, watching Nascar and spending time with his family. Kenny also loved watching the Broncos. He was a true Bronco fan and bled orange and blue. He is survived by his

Mary Elizabeth Beeler (Freed), 82 years young, went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. She was a daughter, wife, friend, mother of three (William, Angela, and Derrell Beeler), grandmother of five (Jennifer Ferguson (Husband, Jason Ferguson), Christoper 'CJ' LeFrancois, Amanda Meixelsperger (Husband, Erik Meixelsperger), Jeffrey "JD" Beeler, and Shawn Smith) and great grandmother of six children (Madison, Riley, and Aiden Ferguson, Zoey Meixelsperger, Eve and Robynn Beeler). Being a true Colorado native, she was born in Devine, CO on August 1, 1937, sharing a birthday with her beloved state. Her parents, Webster and Pearl Freed could never have known the ruckus their eldest daughter would cause them, but still managed to grow their family with Mary's siblings, Evelyn 'Nellie' Kless, Daniel 'Boone' Freed, and Arbra 'Snooks' Freed, all preceding her in death. Mary would go on to expand her own family with her children,

traveling the USA and the world as a military wife to Rubin Beeler. Once her children were grown, she surprised her family once again by becoming a semi-truck driver at the age of 50 (you can't make this stuff up). Mary was a woman with a big heart, a rebellious spirit, and an ornery twinkle in her eye. She loved eagles, flirting with waiters, and Elvis Presley. She was unceasingly stubborn, most obviously shown in her willingness to marry the same man on three separate occasions (we're not kidding -- two divorces, three marriages). For all of her family, she leaves behind a legacy of humor, laughter, and life lived boldly. We can only hope that she is throwing a party with her parents, husband, siblings, and daughter in heaven, and maybe even catching a glimpse of Elvis Presley. Shane Michael Boydstun January 13, 1980 - November 12, 2019

Shane Michael Boydstun, age 39, passed away November 12, 2019 in Penrose hospital in Colorado Springs after suffering a severe asthma attack resulting in cardiac and respiratory failure. His family was by his side. He was born on January 13, 1980 in Canon City, Colorado to Michael Gene Boydstun and Melody Ann Boydstun. Shane grew up in Canon City and graduated in 1998 from Canon City High School. As a child Shane spent many summers on the family farm. Helping with the chores and cattle and working on projects with his Grandpa Bob. Many of those summers included visits to the lakes, playing on the tubes behind the family boat or riding his motorcycle. Shane took a trip of a lifetime with his church youth group his sophomore year of high school to Italy. For about 10 days he got to experience the culture and traditions of his relatives and ancestors. Shane was one of the

most talented musicians and guitar players. He loved to snowboard and fish in the mountains of Colorado. Shane loved to build and work with his hands. Always in the garage working on projects. Shane was a loyal and compassionate young man, always looking out for others and looking for ways to spoil his nieces and nephews. Shane is preceded in death by his Grandpa Bob (Bob Boydstun), Grandma Lou (Louise Graves), Grandpa Marvin Fields, Grandpa Ken Graves, and Uncle Rick Fields. He is survived by his mother and father, Michael and Melody Boydstun; his sister, Shelby London and her husband Mitch London and their 4 children, Melayna, Kaylie, Owen and Hunter; his grandmother, Joan Boydstun; and his aunt Micky Marsh and her family. Funeral Services will be held at a later date. Shane will be laid to rest in Campo, Colorado in the family plot.

Mayor Ashey Smith took time out of Tuesday’s Cañon City Council meeting to pay tribute to the late Myron ‘Smitty’ Smith, his family and his significance to the community. The mayor read a proclamation designating January 2020 as Myron ‘Smitty’ Smith Month. Myron Smith, who died Jan. 13 at age 84, dedicated “countless years of service to Cañon City and the surrounding area.” He shared his expertise, compassion, integrity and freely gave his time to the citizens of Fremont County, according to the proclamation, greatly impacting the lives of the people who he came into contact with. Myron Smith was devoted many years to local organizations such as the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce, Fremont County Airport Advisory Board, Pueblo Community College Fremont Campus Advisory Board and Museum of Colorado Prisons. He also

Last year, 655 host churches and 200,000 volunteers came together to celebrate 100,000 honored guests with special needs. Now in its sixth year, the Tim Tebow Foundation anticipates 800 churches to sign up to host the event. All volunteers must be 16 or older and should register at www.vineyardlive.org/ nts and are required to attend a one-hour training session prior to the event. The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park brought in more than $2 million to city coffers in 2019, despite attendance dropping by about 12,000 visitors compared to the year prior. During an annual update to the Cañon City Council on Tuesday, Brent Hargrave, the chief operating officer of the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, attributed the dip in attendance to the weather. “I can’t remember the last time being here in June when I had to wear a coat most of the time,” he said. “It was just a weird year weatherwise.” Hargrave said other sponsorship partners and venues in the region said they experienced the same thing. “Everyone said the same thing, it was just a ‘soft year’ and weather was a big factor in that,” he said. The attractions that did well were those that were indoors and not weather-related, he said. Hargrave said overall, 2019 was a good year, but it wasn’t a “great year.” There were 352,174 visitors to the park in 2019, which is about 12,000 fewer than in 2018. Total revenues were about $13 million, and of that, the city received $2.7 million, which was $12,000 more than 2018. “We really appreciate the management of the bridge – it is a major revenue source for our city and a taxpayer savings to our citizens,” said Mayor Ashley Smith. “It helps pay for our parks, it helps fix potholes and multiple things – it’s a fantastic partnership.” One milestone in 2019 was the completion of the new Via Ferrata, which provided 665 paid tours of the new amenity. “We expect a heck of a lot more this year,” Hargrave said. “We’re looking forward to a good year on the Via Ferrata. … It has been a huge success in terms of experience – it’s giving our visitors – our guests – a totally different way to experience the park and we are very excited with the potential that Via Ferrata has in future years.” Also last year, the bridge and park spent more than $350,000 rebuilding the water intake at the river and spent about $220,000 on asphalt and other design schematics for future ideas and other

improvements. For 2020, the bridge and park estimates spending about $440,000 on guest improvement including shade structures throughout the park and amenities at Elk Park, including new shade structures and seating. “We would love to bring concerts back, probably in terms of a series, maybe one night a month,” Hargrave said. “We would in the future like to do something in terms of a three-day festival, probably in the months of September or October, and do a larger concert series where we could include camping – we have a lot of land out there that we can use. That is a possibility we will be looking into in the future.” He said the goal is to bring more people to the park, the city and the region. Hargrave also touted the success of the annual Boo at the Bridge. “We started Boo at the Bridge as an event just to give back to the kids and the communities,” he said. “That event has actually just done gangbusters for us – not in terms of revenue, but in terms of people coming and experiencing the park and businesses coming and getting their name out there. It’s become a great community event that we’re really proud of.” Hargrave said there are no plans to replace the incline that was destroyed in the 2013 wildfire, but they’re still looking at ways to get people down to the river. The cost to replace the incline is about $12 million. Also during the meeting, the council also approved the first reading of an ordinance increasing the base rate used to calculate stormwater management fees by 16 percent. Former Councilman Dennis Wied asked the council to table the vote until a more equitable way to charge commercial properties and residential properties could be determined. Councilwoman Dolly Gonzales said she also would like more time to revisit the issues Wied brought up before voting. “We have kicked this thing around over and over until a lot of us are bruised from kicking it around so much,” said Councilman Frank Jaquez. “I think it’s time – let’s do our job and get this done.” Second reading is slated for Feb. 3.
