Colorado Chautauqua Though it is one of Boulder’s most popular tourist attractions, the act of being at Chautauqua is anything but touristy.

Its 1,300-seat auditorium, open May through September, plays host to not only a number of world-class musical acts each season — the

Indigo Girls come nearly every year — but also storytellers, poets, speakers and authors. A free lecture and tour of the varied trees around Chautauqua takes places Sept. 5, and singer/ songwriter Boz Skaggs is on stage Sept. 16.

priority. But Boulder being Boulder, the planetarium is probably better known for more than 40 years of mind-expanding laser and music shows, now featuring high-definition projection and stadiumquality sound.

“It is a super-cool facility, with trippy laser and liquid sky shows, all in a kick-ass auditorium,” Johns says.

“We now have an 8k SkySkan visualizer. It makes for a fully-immersive, 360-degree experience … and a safe place on campus to see a show.”

More than her Laser Floyd, Johns knows her observatories, having worked with NASA in Los Angeles facilities in Pasadena and atop Mt. Wilson, and says she could not be happier working with a student- and community-friendly facility like the Fiske Planetarium.

The 206-seat planetarium opened in 1975 thanks to an endowment from Wallace Fiske, a CU alumni who wished for his money to be used for an educational facility. Johns says Fiske was also very connected to music, and his namesake facility has found a “beautiful blend” between astronomy and science programming and musical events, all as educational opportunities.

“STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – is the popular term, but we add arts to make it STEAM,” she says.

“So the planetarium is used for classes for CU students, local K-12 students and the general public, Monday through Friday. Classes from astronomy, geology, atmospheric science have been held here, plus graphic design.”

Johns says the planetarium also works

with professors in a wide range of disciplines, as the facility’s projectors have data visualization capabilities that are beyond compare – biology students can fly through human arteries, if they wish.

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, plus Saturday and Sunday matinees, the planetarium is open to students and the public for a variety of ticketed space sciencethemed presentations, plus the ever-popular music shows.

Upcoming space programming includes “Black Holes: The Other Side of Infinity,” “Bella Gaia” and “Incoming,” a new film discussing the potential threats (and potential remedies) to meteorites striking the earth. Johns says this summer’s hit has been “CAPCOM Go!,” an insider view of communications during the Apollo 11 moon landing, which took place 50 years ago.

Shows like Laser Stranger Things and Laser Rolling Stones are, of course, popular draws, as well.

“We’re currently working on a U2 playlist for a show during Parents’ Weekend,” she says. “We try to create a mix of older and fresh EDM music for our shows, plus great visuals.”

Visitors are also encouraged to drop by the observatory on Friday nights, where two new 20-inch telescopes offer spectacular views of the stars and planets.

Founded in 1912, the Division of Continuing Education (CE) has a history of success

connecting students and community members with CU Boulder’s outstanding academic resources.

“No matter where you are in your educational journey, CU Boulder’s Division of Continuing Education is here to help,” says Glenna Stewart, CE Communications Manager.

“Continuing Education programs and courses can help you earn a degree, explore a new topic or interest, gain professional knowledge and skills, or test out college before committing to a degree program. Our dedicated advising staff will help you explore your options and decide on the best path to reach your academic goals.”

Continuing Education serves thousands of students each year through a variety of onand off-campus programs and services. The Division differs from other Continuing Education units across the country by supporting learning at every stage of life.

“We have programs to nourish students’

minds from Kindergarten through graduate school,” Stewart says.

Continuing Education is best known for its online and evening classes, which help students meet their individual academic goals by offering more flexibility. “We have a diverse course selection both online and in the evening; it’s really up to each student to decide which format suits their schedule and learning preference,” Stewart says.

In the last few years the Division has partnered with campus schools and colleges to develop two new online degree programs: the Master of Science in Organizational Leadership and the Master of Arts in Journalism Entrepreneurship. Both

degrees give mid-career professionals the skills and knowledge to advance their careers.

The Master of Science in Organizational Leadership program celebrated the graduation of the program’s first three cohorts this summer – a total of 63 students.

Stewart notes that most CE students are pursuing either an undergraduate or a graduate degree, but Continuing Education offers several programs and services designed for audiences who are not ready or interested in earning a degree.

Examples include: • The ACCESS program enables people to enroll in CU Boulder

undergraduate and graduate courses for personal or professional development purposes as a nondegree student.

• The Community Auditors program allows community members to audit CU Boulder courses for no credit.

• CU on the Weekend offers free public lectures by CU Boulder’s world-class faculty during the fall and spring semesters for anyone who loves to learn.

• The High School Concurrent program allows high school students to complete CU Boulder courses for college credit that may also be applied to

high school graduation requirements.

• The International English Center provides a variety of classes for international students who are preparing to enter a university or graduate program in the U.S. It also offers working professionals and community members an opportunity to improve their academic English skills.

or more than 60 years, Program Council has been doing its best to cultivate good times on the CU campus.

In one iteration or another, this group has brought all sorts of entertainment to campus, through live music, major motion pictures, comedians and more. Since its start, folks with the Program Council have drawn big names to Boulder, from Elvis Costello to the Grateful Dead. More recently, Wyclef Jean, Kygo, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have come to town.

Walkabout Creative Arts Journal Since 1973, this group has sought to help prose and art coalesce into a single student-created publication. A board of between five and 15 undergraduate student editors are hired each year by an elected editor-in-chief.

Photography has come a long way in the past 200 years

By Adam Goldstein Marketing Feature ince French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce successfully made the first photographic image on paper coated with silver chloride in 1816, the technology behind capturing a moment has become much more straightforward and user-friendly. Any modern digital camera worth its salt has an automatic setting, one that allows even complete photographic novices to capture eye-catching, compelling images.

But the ease of modern technology doesn’t always make for the best pictures.

The high-end cameras of today are built for nuance; they’re equipped with settings, sensors and tools designed to fully exploit the particular lighting, shade and color of any situation.

An automatic setting on a fancy Canon or Nikon won’t always capture a scene in all its picturesque glory.

“What we’re really trying to do, besides teaching participants about photography, is to become part of the community,” said Jason Beam, spokesman for Mike’s Camera. “Our classes can connect students with local area resources, with nature and local features,” he added, pointing to metro-area workshops that feature owl walks, wild horse conservation and historic parks. “These classes can also teach you about the conservation of the environment.”

All of these larger lessons come to students

through the lens of photography, and Mike’s Camera boasts experts with a wide range of experience at each of their five Colorado locations.

At their Boulder store, which opened in 1967 and effectively launched the Mike’s Camera chain, the teachers have access to advanced, high-quality printing equipment, resources that help steer the class schedule.

“Our instructors can show you how to calibrate a monitor, how to use specific color to change the color of your images and how to use different kinds of software. They can explore different inks and papers and how they

affect your prints,” Beam said. “It’s very specialized and customized. You can create your own type of style on how you print your pictures.”

Other classes at the Boulder store, which range in price from $59 for single sessions to $399 for multiday workshops, include seasonal sessions designed to teach photographers how to properly capture the grandeur and beauty of the stars and the Milky Way. Perhaps you’re ready to become a “Ralphie Handler” — one of the lucky souls who accompany CU’s live 1,200-pound buffalo mascot as she runs in front of a screaming audience of CU fans, leading the football team onto the field on game day.

Tryouts are held each spring and consist of a series of timed runs to determine the would-be handler’s speed. A handler must be a full-time student and have at least one fall semester remaining prior to graduation. Handlers have to be good time managers, too, as

they spend hours each week on strength and conditioning, training, events, appearances and practice.

Team on track after first scrimmage The Buffaloes almost ready to start season with new coach Mel Tucker

olorado isn’t quite ready to play a football game that matters, but after the Buffaloes’ first live scrimmage of preseason camp, head coach Mel Tucker said his team is on track.

“They’re pretty much where I thought they would be at this point,” Tucker said Aug. 10 after the Buffs’ scrimmage. “We’re not where we need to be yet, but at this stage, coming out of our first scrimmage, I feel like we’re right where we need to be.”

Tucker said the Buffs ran 96 plays during the scrimmage, which was closed to the public and media. “Each official was able to

give some feedback to our squad, and it was a pretty clean scrimmage,” Tucker said.

Senior quarterback Steven Montez was “sharp, other than one play,” Tucker said, and he pointed out that 21 different players caught passes.

“We want to have balance and get the ball to all the guys that can make plays for us,” he said.

In the run game, Deion Smith had a good day, and Tucker, for the second time this week, highlighted redshirt freshman running back Jarek Broussard.

“Early in the scrimmage, he showed up and he’s been coming on,” Tucker said. “In terms of having depth at that position, I think we’re sound and solid.”

hen the Pac-12 Conference weekly pairings for the 2019-20 men’s basketball schedule were announced in July, coach Tad Boyle’s Colorado Buffaloes learned they would enjoy the most favorable homeheavy slate to start league play since the program’s inaugural Pac-12 season of 2011-12.

In turn, that means the CU women’s team will have to hit the road.

In early August, the league announced its weekly pairings for the 2019-20 women’s basketball schedule, with the Buffs facing a run of three straight road games to open conference play.

Head coach JR Payne will begin her third run through the Pac12 with a road date at Utah to be played no later than Dec. 29.

CU has opened the Pac-12 schedule at home the past two seasons, and this year’s schedule gives the Buffs five road openers total in nine seasons in the league.

CU went 5-13 in the Pac-12 in each of Payne’s first two years before struggling to a 2-16 mark (12-18 overall) last season. The Buffs have posted just one winning conference record over the past 15 seasons, going 13-5 in the Pac12 in 2012-13.

The Buffs also announced their full nonconference schedule, with CU hosting

Regis in a Nov. 4 exhibition match before tipping off the season Nov. 10 at home against the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

CU visits state rival Colorado State on Nov. 22 and closes the nonconference portion of the schedule with games against Alabama-Birmingham (Dec. 20) and Tulane (Dec. 21) in New Orleans, meaning the Buffs will play five straight away games in three different time zones between late December and early January.

The tipoff times for the nonconference games — as well as the specific matchups, dates and times for the Pac-12 schedule — will be announced at a later date.

“We had a very good season last year. Unfortunately, it didn’t end the way we wanted, but we took the battle out of it this year with our strength of schedule,” Sanchez said. “It’s a challenging schedule, but we control our destiny this year.”

“The Colorado Cup has a lot of positives — the event with the Special Olympics, and the Sunday at Prentup that we have all six Division I teams on the field — but as we looked at it, and all the coaches looked at it, we want to make it more of a special event,” Sanchez said.

Football from page 31 Defensively, Tucker was pleased to see true freshman KJ Trujillo step up at cornerback. Another true freshman, Tarik Luckett, moved from receiver to corner and impressed Tucker with his willingness to get involved in tackles.

“Overall, I thought we were fairly sharp in our first scrimmage,” Tucker said. “I really like what I’m seeing; guys stepping up, developing and getting better. They were into it, and we were very efficient today. We had a good, clean scrimmage.”

Pursell leading on offense Tucker said sophomore center Colby Pursell stepped up as a leader during the scrimmage.

“When the offense started to sputter a little bit, I really saw him try to exert his will on that offensive line and the offense in general,” Tucker said. “That’s the first time I really heard him step up like that. He’s one of our toughest players — mentally tough,

physically tough. It was really good to see his leadership emerge. We’re going to need that.”

Corners building depth

It was fun, and the guys were into it.”

Trujillo and Luckett coming through is a positive for the Buffs. Coming into camp, the Buffs had just five scholarship corners and only three with game experience.

Now with Luckett on defense, the Buffs have six corners on scholarship plus a couple walks-ons, and Tucker said the group is getting better.

The first Pac-12 contest of head coach Tad Boyle’s 10th year at the helm will occur the weekend of Jan. 1-5 at home against the Oregon schools. It will be the fourth time in nine seasons in the Pac-12 the Buffs have opened league play at home, yet the first time since the 2014-15 season. The opening run also jump-starts a favorable stretch of five home games among the first seven Pac-12 games.

CU has played five of its first seven Pac-12 games at home just one other year — their first season in the Pac12 in 2011-12. The Buffs went 5-2 in the opening stretch, winning every home game, and that memorable season ended with the Pac12 tournament championship and the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth in nine years. The Buffs have begun league play with five road dates among the first

seven games in two of the previous three seasons. CU went 0-7 in the first seven Pac-12 games during a backbreaking stretch of the 201617 season and went 2-5 last season.

The Buffs open Boyle’s 10th season in the Pac-12’s annual game in China on Nov. 9 in a contest that will be played as a nonconference game. CU will host UCIrvine as part of the MGM Main Event and also are set to play Wyoming on Nov. 24 and the winner between TCU and Clemson Nov. 26 in Las Vegas.

CU will host San Diego and Northern Iowa in addition to road dates against Colorado State and Kansas (Dec. 7). The Buffs will conclude their nonconference schedule with an NIT firstround rematch against Dayton in the annual Chicago Legends doubleheader on Dec. 21.

from page 38 Groark transfers Sanchez confirmed his club suffered a late defection, as Emily Groark opted to leave the CU program to transfer to St. Louis. Groark remained with the Buffs program through the spring semester and also took part in the team’s trip to France earlier this summer before informing Sanchez of her decision.

Groark tied a CU record for assists by a freshman last year with seven while playing in 19 of 20 games. The move sends Groark closer to her hometown of St. Peters, Mo.

Notable For the second straight year, Kornieck was named to the preseason watch list for the Hermann Trophy, awarded to the top women’s soccer player in the nation. Kornieck enters her senior season ranked fourth in CU history in goals (27), third in assists (18), and fourth in points (72).
