Carol M. Fredrickson, 85, died on September 26, 2019 having lived in Canon City for 62 years, 60 in the same home on N. 15th St. She was from Kansas originally and she always said that sunflowers, the Kansas state flower, were her favorite flower and yellow was her favorite color. She was born on January 28, 1934 in Emporia, KS as the only child of Howard and Edna (Peterson) Mentzer. In 1947, the family moved to Canon City where Carol graduated from Canon City High School in 1952. She thereafter attended the University of Colorado in Boulder where she lived at the University President's home. She worked to pay her school expenses by doing laundry and ironing for the CU President's family. She also waited tables and washed dishes at a boarding house. In 1955, she left school, moved to Denver, and worked as a reservationist for United Airlines. She married Robert G. Fredrickson on June 11, 1955 and, when he finished his law school studies at CU in 1957, they returned to live in Canon City. Carol's career from 1956 until her death was as a wife, mother, and grandmother, all roles to which she was wholly committed and at which she excelled. She also created and maintained a home worthy of Better Homes & Gardens status and a yard that rightly won awards. She and Bob had three sons within the first eight years of their marriage. She was a stay-at-home mom and was also involved in community and church activities. As a 55 year member of the United Presbyterian Church, she served as both an elder and a deacon and she participated in Sunday School, VBS, and Gloria Dei, as well as being a volunteer hostess for coffee hour after church. Her community involvement included being a Cub Scout den mother. In 1974, she became a sister in P.E.O., Chapter DK. She was the first and only member of her family to be a P.E.O. and it was a part of her life she truly cherished. At age 51, Carol

decided to go back to college to finish her degree. Little by little, commuting 2-3 days per week to the University of Colo. in Colo. Springs, she graduated with a B.A. in English in 1993. Carol and Bob took many family trips with their sons to numerous places in the U.S. and Canada. In later years, they traveled to Scotland, Holland, and France as members of the CU Roaming Buffaloes. Speaking of CU, many people will fondly remember the tailgate lunches Carol offered at CU football games. They were legendary: the lunches always, the Buffs sometimes. Carol's hobbies included maintaining her beautiful home, cooking outstanding meals, and gardening. She enjoyed listening to classical music and soft jazz. Mainly, she served her family and community. She was very other-focused and loved her husband, sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren deeply and well. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Robert G. Fredrickson; sons Bryan (Jill) Fredrickson of Canon City; Barry (Lisa) Fredrickson of Chagrin Falls, OH; and David (Johnna) Fredrickson of Wareham, MA and eight grandchildren - Alexa, Matthew, Jenna, Grace (Tommy), Paul, Hale, Colin, and Jared. The Fredrickson family would like to thank the Florence Care Home for its special attention to Carol's end-of-days' needs. They made her feel special and loved. Also, the family appreciates the services provided by Frontier Hospice. Elaine May (Briggs) Yokom was born April 27, 1939 in Archer, Madison, Idaho to Elmer Briggs and Clea May Weekes. She passed away peacefully on Sept 28, 2019 at home with family present. She married R Lee "Pappy" Yokom on June 21, 1960 in the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She attended Madison High School where she participated in Band, Choir & Volleyball. While raising her young children, she was a devoted homemaker. She enjoyed music and her hobbies included fishing, bowling & crafting. Her children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren were her pride & joy. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She is survived by her children, Elliott (Annette) Yokom, Eric Yokom, Della (Russell) Collins, Debbi Jo

(David) Johnson, Waide Yokom, Charlene Wright; 11 grandchildren; ten greatgrandchildren; siblings, Madeline (Ed) Colburn, Lee James (Julie) Briggs, Larry Briggs; brother-in-law, James Dennis; along with numerous nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sisters; and one brother. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Sangre de Cristo Hospice. Donna Ireland Chappell passed away peacefully at the hospital after a short illness, on September 28, 2019. Donna was born in Fort Morgan, Colorado on September 4, 1931 to Oscar and Marjorie (McCullough) Ireland. The family moved to Cañon City in 1935, where she grew up and went to school, through Cañon City High School graduating in 1949. She attended one year at University of Colorado in Boulder, then was employed at the Pueblo Army Depot in Pueblo for a few years. Donna was best known for her helpfulness while working for 30 years for the First National Bank in Cañon City, where she was named the first woman bank officer ever given that title in the bank.. She also later worked with the Fremont County Credit Union, where she made many friends and customers who remember her fondly. She was active in the community by joining the Altrusa Club, where she was elected president, the Fremont Concert Series Group, as secretary, and Cañon City Chamber of Commerce volunteer and office staff. Donna is survived by

her sister, Carol Ireland McNew, her daughter, Ronda (Allen) Locke, Grandson Mark (Lindsay) McCoy, and granddaughter Stacey (Keith) Westrick. She also has six great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who will miss her. A special neighbor, Bill Jermance was a great help and supporter. Donna will be remembered by all her neighbors as the lady who walked up to five miles a day for many years, until she was 87. She was an avid crossword puzzles and cryptograms worker, as well as playing the piano for pleasure. She was noted for her handwork her crochet pieces and embroidery were prized by all who received a gift from her. She won top prize at the Colorado State Fair for her crocheted bedspread. No services will be held, at her request, as well as no flowers. She will be interred at Lakeside Cemetery, with her father, mother and many other relatives. Jimmie Ray Wilhite January 24, 1936 ~ September 28, 2019 Jimmie (J.R.) Wilhite entered the joy of Heaven on Sat Sep 28, 2019. J.R., brother to Shirley Bonnar, was born in Roosevelt, OK to James C & J Pauline (Smith) Wilhite Jan 24, 1936. J.R. spent his early years in the San Luis Valley. He moved to Houston, TX in 1969 to be close to his sister and for better opportunities. In 1990 he moved to Florence to be close to his aging parents. Having been born with a handicap, his joy was his home, yard and serving his Lord with his beautiful singing voice. J.R. first attended the Methodist Church in Florence and later joined Canon

Community Baptist Church in Canon City. As a part of the ministry team he was able to sing and to share God's word with the residents of several nursing homes. Friday nights would usually find him at the Florence Sr Center musical jam where he would sing gospel songs and visit with friends. He is survived by his sister Shirley (Bill) Bonnar, nephew Dan R. Farrar (Richard, Zoe, Brooke-children) and various cousins. A memorial will be held on Thursday, Oct 10, 2019 at 1pm at Canon Community Baptist Church, corner of 11th & Monroe.

Charlotte Elaine Ricketts, born December 28, 1937 in Denver, Colorado and raised in Victor, Colorado peacefully passed away on September 21, 2019 in Canon City, Colorado. We honor Elaine, who gave her life being kind and helpful to those around her and dedicating herself to doing God's work. Her sharing stories, being a friend, inspiring those who needed someone was her God given talent. She touched many people's lives by creating and sharing poems and will be forever remembered by family and many friends. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Ella Galbraith; and many nieces, nephews and

special friend, Janice. She was preceded death by her husband, Emery J. Ricketts; and brother, Donald E. McGowan. Fern J. Minty January 5, 1932 ~ September 24, 2019 Fern Minty was born Fern J. Westlake in Evergreen, Colorado on January 5, 1932. She grew up amid the Great Depression with six brothers and sisters. Her father worked hard to make ends meet by driving trucks and holding other jobs, and as the children grew, they took part-time jobs to help support the family, including Fern, who eventually quit the 9th grade for a full-time job at a drugstore in Denver. In time, Fern married U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Melvin G. Minty, and together, they grew their family and remained married for more than 50 years. Fern's four beloved sons Ron (Connie) Minty, Mike Minty, Steve Minty and Chip (Sandy) Minty were the most important part of her world. She taught them to know Jesus, work hard and to treat others with respect and consideration. Fern had many jobs over the years. She was a department store clerk; she ran a day-care service, owned and operated a gas station and travel trailer business. She also managed two ice cream stores and oversaw production units at two manufacturing facilities. But to Fern, those were just side jobs she held while pursuing her primary purpose of being a mother to her

four boys, a role she was devoted to her entire life. Fern's granddaughter, Kate Minty, summed it up best, "Grandma raised four outstanding men and created a family line to be proud of." Throughout her life, Fern lived in many places, including Great Britain, California, Nebraska, Wyoming, Texas and Oklahoma. Ultimately, Fern and Mel returned to Colorado settling in Canon City. Mel passed away in 2002, and Fern continued to enjoy life in Colorado until she passed on Tuesday. Fern is survived by her younger brother, Ernie (Janie) Westlake; three sons; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband and one son, Steve. Memorial service, 11:30 AM Monday, September 30, 2019, Holt Funeral Home, 806 Macon Ave., Canon City, CO. Kathryn McCusker Our beloved Kathryn Isabelle McCusker, age 52, passed away peacefully on September 17th, 2019, at Parkview Hospital in Pueblo, Colorado. She was born on November 19th, 1966 in Pueblo, to Glenn Raymond and Ruth Genevieve Mackey. Her interests included, family, children, animals, gardening, fishing and music. She was spiritual, a wonderful mother, sister, aunt to many nieces and nephews and a friend to many. She is survived by her children, daughter, Kasey McCusker, son, Dillon McCusker and
