Joseph W. Anderson

November 10, 1930 ~ September 7, 2019 Joseph W. Anderson, 88, of Canon City passed away September 7, 2019. Joseph was born in Eads, Colorado on November 10, 1930 to William and Etta Anderson. He joined the US Army in 1947 serving for 21 years. He did tours in both Korea and Vietnam. After his service ended in1968 he married Brigitte Menzel in Hastings, Nebraska. After retiring from the Army Joe went to work for the Department of Corrections, where he worked for 19 years, retiring as a Captain. Joe was a life member of the VFW 4061, where he was the commander for many years. Joe enjoyed fishing, camping, farming and gardening. Joe's favorite hobbies were having yard sales,

going to auctions, and raising birds. He is survived by his wife, Brigitte Anderson; children, Charles Anderson, Sandy Adams, Pamela Dang, and Tom (Michelle) Anderson; brother, Bob Anderson; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both parents; four sisters; one brother; and a son, Joseph Jr. Funeral service, 10AM Friday, September 13, 2019, Holt Chapel of the Garden, Canon City, CO 81212. Ronald Dale Frederick, Sr. October 13, 1930 - August 24, 2019

Ronald Dale Frederick, Sr. aka Dale Frederick, 88, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the Florence Care Home in Florence, Colorado. Dale was born October 13, 1930 in Cordell, Oklahoma to Charles Roy and Alta Lee Squires Frederick. Dale enlisted in the Air Force a week before his 17th birthday, changing his date of birth to October 1, 1930 and his name to Dale R. Frederick. He earned his GED in the service and was trained as a radio repairman, serving in Germany. He married Marlene Mulliner on March 4, 1951 and they had four children: Ronald Dale Jr. (Chalyn), Steven Roy (Cathy), Phyllis Ann Pollard (Kirk), and Wesley Bernard. Dale was a delivery truck driver and a salesman, starting his career in Williams, Arizona working for Rainbo Bread. While in Williams he was a member of the Lion's Club and president of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce (JC's). His travels eventually took him to Mancos, Colorado where he

bought a building on the corner of Main and Grand to house Frederick's Restaurant Supply. He also ran two truck stops in Cortez, Colorado. While living in Mancos he was a volunteer firefighter, deputy sheriff, president of the Lion's Club, and served on the town board. Dale and Marlene retired in 1992 and moved to Canon City, Colorado. The next year he bought land with a shed on it and built their home in Brookside. He served on the Brookside town board for a while. Dale loved bowling and was on two senior bowling leagues in Canon City. He had a lifetime enjoyment of hunting and fishing. Dale requested that on his passing, his body be donated to science, which was done through Science Care. There will be a family memorial service for him October 12, 2019 in Aurora at his granddaughter's home. At the time of his passing Dale's descendants numbered 4 children, 15 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Susan J. Justus

August 5, 1949 - September 8, 2019 Susan J. Justus, age 70, passed from this life at 6:00 am, Sunday September 8, 2019. Susan was an only child of Bill and Marie Spicer, who preceeded her in death. She was reared in Florence, Colorado and spent most of her life in Florence. Susan was the wife of Donnie H. Justus Sr., the mother of two sons, James W. Justus and Donnie H. Justus Jr. She graduated from florence High School in 1967 and studied at the University of Southern Oklahoma State. She spent 37 years employed at the Fremont County Clerks Office in Canon City, Colorado.

Susan enjoyed reading and crocheting and being with her family. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Donnie H. Justus Sr., and her sons James W. Justus and wife Sandra, Donnie H. Justus Jr. and wife Marianna, two grandchildren, Zachary J. Justus and wife Nellie, William Cody Justus and one great grand daughter, Scarlette Justus. The Harwood Funeral Home of Canon City will be handling the arrangements. Susan will be cremated and there will be no services.

Stephen (Steve) Kenneth Loyd August 22, 1949 - September 04, 2019

Stephen (Steve) Kenneth Loyd, of Cotopaxi, Colorado went to his heavenly home on September 04, 2019. Steve was born August 22, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois to Harry Lawrence Loyd and Florence More. He was an auto mechanic most of his life and ran a firewood business many years as well. He enjoyed the outdoors and just being out in the wilderness with his dogs. He is survived by his wife Jerrie Loyd (Shepard). Sisters Sandra (Jim) Evans,

Barbara Jean (John) Bingham. Children, Matthew loyd, Angela Victory, Jeremiah Loyd, Levi Loyd, Ester Loyd, Sherry Owens and Chris Clint and many grand children and great grand children. Steve donated to his body to Science as his last gift to the world and respectfully asked for no funeral or services. The family would also like to thank Deer Mountain Fire Protection for everything they did for Steve in his last moments and the community of Cotopaxi.

Larry Leroy Wagner

November 22, 1932 ~ August 31, 2019 Larry Leroy Wagner passed into the Lord's arms on August 31, 2019. Larry was born in Grover, Colorado, a small town in the northeastern corner of the state on Nov 22, 1932. His outgoing and vivacious personality counted everyone as friend. He participated in all sports and worked on a sheep ranch during his summers. Larry met his high-school sweetheart in 7th grade, Ruth Hoffman, "Rudy", and they married November of 1953. Larry and Ruth enjoyed dancing and honed their swing from big bands to square dance. Larry served in the Air Force becoming Staff Sergeant as a B-47 aircraft technician with duties as a fuel cell specialist, flight line mechanic, and crew chief. He graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in agriculture. Employment with Martin Marietta and General Dynamics took him throughout the Midwest installing and testing ICBM throughout the United States. After a close encounter with a missile explosion, he returned to agriculture, taking a position as Fremont and Custer County Extension Agent in Canon City in 1964. In this role, he directed the 4-H, FFA, and Herd Improvement Programs for eight years before taking a position as Assistant Manager of the Colorado State Fair

in Pueblo Colorado, retiring after 20 years. He continued to be involved with horse shows at the Fair, and weighing steers for the local 4-H families. A twenty-year battle with Parkinson's disease finally required his move to the Bruce McCandless Veterans Home in Florence. He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Ruth Wagner; son Jay Wagner of Canon City; daughter Billie Carstens, son-in-law Steve Carstens, granddaughter Corinne Carstens of Centennial; and sister Sally Githens of Oakland, California. Larry enjoyed a special relationship with his nephew Jim Wagner, of Black Forest, and has seven nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his two brothers, Bill and Jack; and a grandson, Luke Carstens. Larry Wagner leaves a legacy of love and laughter to those who were blessed to know him. He will be interred at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver on Sept. 9, 2019 at 1:30 pm. A memorial will be held at a later date. Learn about local legends and ghost stories during discussion The Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center will host an open discussion about local legends and ghost stories of Fremont County. Longtime residents of Fremont County are welcome to join the discussion about the stories and legends told around the county. Related documents, images, and objects are encouraged. The discussion will be ﬁlmed so it can be added to the oral history collection within the museum. The program will be at 9 a.m. Oct. 3 in the museum’s program room and is free and open to the public. Friends of the Museum presents Old Timey movies

The Friends of the Royal Gorge Regional Museum will be showing Old Timey Movies that were filmed in Fremont County Thursday nights in September starting Sept. 12 through Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at 612 Royal Gorge Boulevard. Frontier Feeds named September winner

Frontier Feeds has been announced as the September winner of the Cañon City Daily Record and Shopper’s Small Business Contest. The Striegel family has been operating Frontier Feeds for three generations. Boyde Striegel started the business in 1987 and built the business with his son, Robert. Today, Robert and his son, Sean, operate the business. When the business opened its doors on the east side of Canon City, there was just hay ﬁelds and U.S. 50. Since then, the area has boomed with chain stores and restaurants, homes and hotels. “With our small town getting bigger every year, we want to make sure we can keep up with a growing community ranchers, small farmers and pet owners,” owner Sean Striegel said. “Advertising, in print and online, is the name of the game for a small business. Hopefully, this award will boost our visibility and sales and really just get people to know we are here!” The contest, which was launched in March, will award six businesses through the end of the year. A team of independent judges selected the six winners from entry letters. One business will be selected each month through December. Each winner will receive free website design and hosting for one year, as well as six months of free digital and print advertising (valued at $500 per month). A grand prize winner will be announced in January and will receive a renovation package. Atmos Energy to begin upgrading aging infrastructure in 2020 Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

Atmos Energy’s effort to upgrade aging infrastructure in Cañon City is slated to begin next year. The upgrade will replace parts of the system with newer natural gas lines to increase the safety and reliability of its natural gas delivery system. Representatives from Atmos Energy met with city, county and state ofﬁcials Friday to share information about the latest safety investments and pipe replacement project. Atmos plans during the next ﬁve years to spend $15 million in Fremont County replacing about 15 miles of pipe. The

projected work area in 2020 includes Harrison Avenue between College and Macon and Ninth and 12th streets and the area of Eighth and Bridge streets. Jennifer Altieri, the director of public affairs for Atmos Energy, said ofﬁcials will meet with customers and city representatives to provide more detailed information about the project as time draws near. The project is expected to take about two months. “It’s a very concerted effort to make sure everybody knows exactly what’s going on,” she said. The work should have minimal impact on customers. During the project, contractors will use a bypass unit, which will allow customers to maintain service.

Kids Klub site leader Kids Klub is hiring Site Leaders. This is a part-time position of 15 to 30 hours per week, primarily working from 6:45 - 8:00 am and 2:45 - 6 pm during the school year. During the summer up to 40-hours per week is possible. Duties: Work with children in a before and after school childcare setting at local elementary schools. Care for children ages 5-12. Ensure the safety of the children, while also having fun. Responsible for snack time, arts and crafts, play time and games. Must love working with children. Requirements: Must be 21 years of age. Must have 3 years verifiable experience working with groups of children aged 5 and up. Verifiable experience can be paid or unpaid such as scouts, 4H, sports, childcare in a facility, etc. College course work may be substituted for experience. Background check and fingerprint check is required. Must be willing to complete mandatory paid training of 40-65 hours, which can be a combination of online and at site. All training fees are paid by the District.
