Letha Talbot McDowell September 30, 1928 ~ March 18, 2019

Letha Talbot McDowell was born September 30, 1928 to Laurence and Minnie Talbot. At the age of seven, the family moved to Canon City where they stayed until the beginning of WW II. They moved to Watts in California and stayed there until her oldest brother left for the war. Letha and her family returned to Canon City where she met a handsome young sailor home on leave. Letha married Thomas McDowell June 19, 1946. They were married for 69 years at the time of Thomas's passing in 2015. Letha was the first employee hired at Gibsons. She also worked at the Tasty Pastry Bakery for a few years. Besides being a wonderful wife and the world's best "Moma", Letha taught Sunday school, G. A.s and Bible school at First Southern Baptist Church. She was a Camp Fire Girls Leader, helped with cub scouts and was a room mother for all her children. Letha followed her youngest son's ball team to out of town games and her oldest grandson to swim meets in Loveland. Family get-togethers, camping and fishing (she was known to occasionally out fish the guys), and reading a

good book were some of her favorite things to do. Letha is survived by two sons, Thomas Jr. (Barbara Brimm) and John (Taunya) McDowell; daughter, Barbara (Edd) Harris; six grandchildren, Daniel Harris (widowed), Lori DiOrio, James (Lorili) McDowell, Christopher (Kersti) McDowell, Kyle McDowell, and Alyssa McDowell; five great-grandchildren, Leeanna (Zack), Kirianna Harris, Thomas McDowell, Kasey McDowell and William McDowell. Letha was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas McDowell Sr.; both parents; brothers, Alford and Melford Talbot; sisters, Viola Kinsman, Laura Roberts, Nellie Ahart, and Doris Marchenski; and granddaughter-in-law Darya Harris. He enjoyed his time with us by being an amazing father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Michael G. "Mike" Bumgarner January 26, 1951 ~ March 19, 2019

Mike was born January 26, 1951 in Cripple Creek, Colorado, to G.A. "June" and Ardath Bumgarner. He died March 19, 2019 in Grand Junction, Colorado. Mike spent his early years in Guffey, Colorado, where he attended first and second grade in a one-room school house where Mrs. Anna Smith taught him "reading, writing and arithmetic" along with about a dozen other children ranging from first grade through eighth grade. The family moved to Cañon City in the mid-1950s and settled on a 10-acre plot in Lincoln Park. After moving to Cañon City, he helped his dad with irrigation and other chores around their place and learned how to operate heavy equipment. But, as soon as he was old enough to get his CDL, he began jockeying big rigs. He drove for Coors and was the youngest driver to go over the mountains with a load of beer. He also drove for Berta Brothers hauling ore from Golden to the Cotter Mill south of Cañon. He purchased his own truck and hauled all over the country. He briefly worked for Alpha Beta in Pueblo. He began his career for DOC at the Buena Vista facility in 1987/88, then transferred to Fremont in the East Cañon Complex before retiring as a sergeant in charge of the infirmary at Territorial ("Old Max") in 2008. After he retired from DOC, he moved to the Western Slope and worked for Collins Construction until

health issues forced him to retire for good in 2014. Mike and Vickie's other endeavors included starting a small tree farm and raising emus for their meat, oil and other by-products. Mike enjoyed being outdoors, but if he had to be inside he liked to hang out in the shop he built and watch NASCAR, the Broncos and the History Channel on the TV he had hanging from the rafters! Mike is survived by his wife, Vickie, whom he met at a truck stop in Monument where she was a waitress during the time he was hauling for Berta Brothers. They were married June 30, 1979. He is also survived by his sons, Jason Sr. (Stephanie), Andy (Rebecca) and Steven (Lacie); his grandchildren, Brittany, Dennis, Destiny, Jason, Jr., Andria, Christopher, Anthony, Tiffany, Madison, Kylie, Jameson and Hallie; and great-grandson, Kyzar. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents and younger brother, Chris. Mike liked people to think he was a tough guy and there is no denying he could be stubborn, sarcastic and mischievous, but he had a wry sense of humor and actually smiled on occasion. He loved his beer, hated snakes and could be the most loyal friend anyone could ever ask for as long as you never betrayed that friendship. Cremation was by Browns Crematory and Mortuary in Grand Junction. There will be no public services.

Marjorie Jeanne Lambert passed away March 6, 2019 in Canon City, CO. Marjorie was born September 9, 1927 in Hooper, Colorado to Cecil R. and Minnie (Barrier) Bradley. She graduated from Moffat High School in 1945. Marjorie and her two daughters moved to Alamosa in 1969. She was employed at Evergreen Nursing Home for twenty years, retiring in 1989. She lived in Salida for 18 years. In 2011 she moved to Hildebrand nursing in Canon City, Colorado.

Suzanne Frenzel Baldwin November 11, 1928 ~ March 20, 2019

Suzanne Frenzel Baldwin, long-time and much-loved resident of Cañon City, Colorado, died in her home at the age of 90 of heart failure, on the morning of March 20, 2019. She was born on November 11, 1928, in Indianapolis, Indiana to Henry and Harriet G. Frenzel. She attended The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, and Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, where she majored in theater and drama. Suzanne was married to Delavan Munson Baldwin Jr., of New Canaan, Connecticut. She is survived by her four children David, Jennifer (Owen Williams), Michael, and Susannah (Paul Good), six grandchildren, Penelope, Tucker, Jesse, Sofia, Katie, and Justine, her brother Peter Frenzel and half-sister Julie Roberts. She was preceded in death by her sister Joanne Frenzel. Suzanne obtained her teaching credentials and taught in the Oakland Public Schools for 30 years. She retired to Colorado, living in Boulder, Littleton, and finally settling in Cañon City. A mother to her children first and a

teacher to countless students, Suzanne believed in the gift of a quality education and ensured each of her four children graduated from college. She lived a vibrant, active life with an independent spirit, always busy working on something, up to her very last day: the Pueblo Community College; the Veterans of Foreign Wars; the Prison Visitation and Support Program; the "No Rules" group and "The Meta Group", which she founded. Suzanne loved to be part of life, to be among friends, and to be of service to others. She lived as if there were never enough time to do all there is to do. Those who knew her well remember her fondly and will miss the warm bright light in that corner of their lives. A memorial service to celebrate Suzanne's life will be held on May 26th at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Cañon City. Services have been entrusted to Holt Funeral Home in Cañon City. Duane Seph Hupp May 18, 1934 - March 20, 2019

On Wednesday March 20th Duane Hupp loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, & Great Grandfather went to be with the Lord at age 84. Duane was born on May 18th, 1934 in Bloomfield NE to William & Alice Hupp. In December 1957 he married Ruth. They raised 2 daughters Deborah & Rebecca, and 4 sons Daniel, Russell, Theodore, & Douglas. He started working on bicycles when he was 8 years old, was a mechanic, and he served in the Navy on the USS Valley Forge air craft carrier. He received his degree in teaching with a bachelor's in industrial arts from the University of Southern Colorado in 1969 and taught for a little over 20 years in the state of Colorado. Duane had a passion

hands and a hobby for cars, especially Chevy Corvairs. He also had a passion for teaching and sharing his knowledge & skills with others. He was a man with a list of talents and expertise and was happiest tinkering and working on engines or small motors. His personality was infectious, and he had a kind compassionate heart. Duane was preceded in death by his parents William & Alice, brother Gene, & sister Janet. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Ruth, sister MaryJo, 6 children, 12 grandchildren, & 8 great grandchildren. He will also be fondly remembered by several nieces and nephews. Charles Henry Snyder, 82, passed away Sunday, March 17 in McAlester, OK. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 30 in Indianola, OK. Charles was born on January 16, 1937 in Onondaga, NY to Harold Henry and Viola Elizabeth (Brian) Snyder, and lived most of his life in CO. He married Rosemary Ray on May 27, 1972 in Golden CO. Fremont County Coroner: ‘Last year was a very rough year’

Last year was a busy one for the Office of the Fremont County Coroner. In addition to preparing the county for any potential future mass casualties and tending to his usual case load, Fremont County Coroner Randy Keller helped to solve a cold case, restructured his staff and investigated a record number of homicides. There typically are more than 500 deaths in Fremont County each year, nearly half of which are investigated by the coroner’s office. “Our numbers are rising every year in regards to investigative cases,” Keller said. Will Mauriello officially was sworn in as the county’s chief deputy coroner as of Jan. 1, a part-time position that Keller hopes to make full-time next year. Mauriello, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, did deputy coroner work last year and formerly worked for a funeral home, where he was a funeral director and embalmer. “Will has been a tremendous asset to this office,” Keller said. “Having Will in this office has really made a big difference in the hours that this office is open and a better work flow to deal with families and the cases.” Mauriello said being part of the staff is fulfilling, and he especially enjoys the medical side of the job. Other on-call, part-time deputy coroners include Bill Price, Taylor Chaney and Shannon Sparks. Keller requires all of the deputy coroners to be state certified death investigators within one year of being sworn in, and they must complete 20 hours of continuing education every year. “We have a very professional staff working that I am very happy with,” Keller said. “The chief deputy and all the deputy coroners are doing a good job.” They investigated eight homicide deaths last year, not including an inmate death at the Department of Corrections and one at the Federal Bureau of Prisons. “I think it’s the highest number of homicides we’ve ever had in this county,” Keller said. “Most of these are under investigation, there are very few that aren’t. Last year was a very rough year.” He said law enforcement is seeing an

Nine individuals had opioids in their system at the time of death in 2017, compared to seven in 2018. “What we run into a lot with people who are on opiate pain medication is the mixing of prescription medication and alcohol,” Keller said. “That is where a lot of people make a mistake — or they mix in more than one prescription medication together which can cause death also.” Keller also was busy last year helping to solve a cold case involving the death of Remzi Nesfield, who was reported missing in 2007. Keller worked with Fremont County Sheriff’s Office detectives Peter Rasmussen and Howard Burton to collect the remains, submit DNA samples and have a facial reconstruction completed. Nesfield’s alleged killer was arrested in January in Arizona. “It gave the family some closure, which is very important,” Keller said. “It is very, very gratifying to be able to work hand in hand with the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department, be able to help out a family, be able to help close a case that was years and years old, and see someone be brought to justice over this homicide.” Keller now is revisiting two other cold cases, one from 1981 involving a John

Also new last year, Keller implemented a new software system that keeps track of records and statistics. Additionally, the office has acquired and implemented an official coroner’s vehicle, and Keller and the county’s Office of Emergency Management garnered a

$40,000 Homeland Security grant for a regional mass casualty trailer. “I feel like our office is more prepared now for anything than it ever has been,” he said. Keller, who kicked off his second term in office in January, is the current sitting vice president of the Colorado Coroner’s Association and the vice president of the Colorado Coroner’s Standards and Training Board for the state, a position that is appointed by the governor, and he is part of the CCA’s coroner assist team.
