reeley Tribune’s Best of Greeley contest is an annual celebration of the top businesses, services, and professionals in the Greeley area.

The 2019 contest featured 148 categories for participants to nominate and vote for. This year, 11,698 people participated in the process, amassing 7,956 business nominations and 151,620 votes.

Each of the 148 categories has an overall winner, with second and third places recognized below the winner.

Here are a few of the more interesting results: n If there was one overall winner in Best of Greeley, it would be Wing Shack with the top number of votes in an individual category — 976. n There was one tie for first place in the best pediatric dentist category. Dr. Dana and Wild for a Smile tied with 109 votes each. n The Tavern at St. Michael’s Square was nominated in 23 categories. n Texas Roadhouse received the most votes for a second-place finish — 628 in the best barbecue restaurant category. Its 628 votes for second place was higher than votes for first place in 142 other categories. n Wonderful Inn Chinese Restaurant received the most votes for a third-place finish — 330 in the best Chinese restaurant category. Its 330 votes for third place was higher than votes for first place in 102 other categories. n Best hair stylist received 67 nominations with a

total 3,013 votes — the highest number of nominations and votes in an individual category. Best hair salon and best barber also received many nominations and landed in the top 12 categories for number of votes received, with 2,155 and 1,870, respectively. n Dondi Gesick of Emery Counseling won her category of best therapist or counselor with 55 votes — the lowest first place finish. n Best travel agency only received one nomination — Mary’s Travel Desk — and 98 votes. n Luna’s Tacos & Tequila won the most categories — five — winning best restaurant atmosphere, best vegetarian restaurant, best catering, best Mexican restaurant, and best outdoor patio. Luna’s was nominated in 13 total categories, receiving 1,497 total votes. n Three businesses are three-peat winners, topping three categories — Chick-fil-A winning best customer service, best kid-friendly restaurant, and best fast food restaurant; Greeley Stampede winning best place for live entertainment, best outdoor event, and best community event; and JB’s Drive In winning best family restaurant, best hamburger, and best American food restaurant.

If you walk around Greeley, there’s hardly a public space that hasn’t been artistically touched by Armando Silva, painter, muralist, performer, and community activist.

Contributing to the revitalization of Downtown Greeley, he serves on the Greeley Creative District board, co-directs the Colorado Dance Collective, and is on the Think360 roster, an agency that places working artists in schools for workshops, residencies, and performances. Catch him at local community events creating masterpieces through live performances and demonstrations of public art.

Greeley’s stomping grounds for nearly 100 years. The Stampede has become a summer staple and signals the beginning of the July 4th holiday. All walks of life and backgrounds converge on the Island Grove grounds for two weeks in June and July to enjoy concerts by some of the biggest stars, rodeos, live music, carnival rides, fireworks, food, and so much more.

Attendance from the earliest days has grown from 2,500 to more than 250,000, drawing visitors from all over while retaining a smaller town community feel. You’ll more than likely bump into someone you know and haven’t seen since the Stampede the previous year.

Not only does Relay for Life raise funds to fight the devastating diagnosis that is cancer, it celebrates, honors, and remembers those who have fought, those who continue to fight, those who have won, and those who care for them. The Northern Colorado Relay for Life event has raised nearly $250,000, providing hope for those with cancer and the people who love them. “Join Relay for Life and see why ‘we’ is an unstoppable word.”

With the release of a full-length album under its belt in 2018, The Burroughs signature “sweaty soul” sound is stronger than ever. The nine-piece band from Greeley has played its original soul and funk music on stages in Colorado and beyond, staying true to its Greeley roots all the while.

The band gives back to the community by working with organizations like the Weld Food Bank, Greeley Boys and Girls Clubs, and Habitat for Humanity. The longtime news columnist and reporter for The Greeley Tribune is well known for his opinions written in his Gnarly Trombone column. t’s only been a year, but Luna’s Tacos & Tequila has already swept Best of Greeley, winning five categories and getting nominated in 13 categories.

Brian Seifried, owner of the Wing Shack, and Ely Corliss, owner of Moxi Theater in downtown Greeley, saw an opportunity for a building right next to the Moxi.

“We had a year to think about it. DoubleTree had leased it for pre-events before the hotel was built,” Seifried says. “We had a dream for a box office and it evolved into the idea for a restaurant. It was a neat old building with good bones. A lot of the second-floor space was what inspired the rooftop patio. One thing led to another and we landed on Mexican food, focused on tacos and the agave collection.”

Seifried and Corliss took a trip to San Francisco to study the taco game and see what other people were successfully doing.

In October 2017, they brought in a designer friend and began the process of demoing and hauling dumpsters full of old 1960s material from the building.

“With the kitchen, we knew we wanted to bring something different to the community,” Seifried says. “We focus on high-quality natural ingredients. We have great agriculture here in Greeley and we wanted to do something that payed homage to the great Mexican food already in Greeley, but we also had the passion to do something new. That led to the new menu with things like Brussels sprouts tacos and mushroom tacos. I love a burrito smothered in green chile and yellow cheese, but we wanted to push people’s limits.”

The partners are working to add more events and tastings at the restaurant, showcasing their collection of around 180 best of greeley 2019

tequilas and other Mexican spirits. Unlike most bars, PatrÓn isn’t the star of the show when it comes to tequila.

“You can go to any bar and get PatrÓn.

But you can come to Luna’s and get a Clase Azul,” Seifried says. “We want to kick that old stereotype that tequila is cheap liquor you cover up with lime and salt and that you had a bad experience with back in college. We have bars upstairs and downstairs and use fresh juices in our cocktail program. We push the envelope of what people expect.”

It’s a different take, but Luna’s isn’t the only Mexican restaurant on the block, and Seifried says that’s a good thing.

“We have a lot of respect for The Rio and how early they came downtown,” he says. “But downtown is about creating a space with many places for people to bounce around. We’re rising the tide together. It’s an important mindset that most downtown business owners have.

Each one that’s successful makes the other successful.”

Luna’s menu and atmosphere will continue to evolve and change as staff works to constantly improve and change.

“We’re constantly looking to improve the space. We may add some patio coverage in the following years,” Seifried says. “We poured our blood, sweat and tears into it to create a space for friends and family. We’re humbled by the idea that the community has been so supportive of Luna’s and to have received these accolades. It’s paid off.” food & drink

Dickey’s signature cup is just the beginning of a menu filled with quality, hickorysmoked signature favorites perfected since 1941. Meat is still slow-smoked on site, but the menu has expanded to include sides like jalapeno beans and macaroni and cheese. Complimentary butter rolls and ice cream round out your meal.

Bartending isn’t easy. You have to be friendly, efficient, able to make a drink, cut off someone who’s had too much, and at times be a therapist. If that weren’t enough, you also have to show some self-control and not drink the liquor while everyone around you does. Good thing all of that comes naturally to Andrea Poppe at Old Chicago. Fort Collins has nothing on Greeley’s beer game. Ok, honestly Fort Collins’ beer game is pretty strong, too, but the more beer the better! WeldWerks Brewing Co. is a major contributor in changing Greeley’s reputation and downtown area as a place to go for locally-brewed and -crafted beer. With descriptions that include blueberry, pineapple, guava, vanilla, and milk sugar, you might forget that you’re ordering a beer. That’s the Everything But BanAnnas Hazy Milkshake Double IPA for future reference.

Why not enjoy the best beer in Greeley at the best Brewery?

It only makes sense. WeldWerks Brewing Co. doesn’t currently offer tours but their knowledgeable and friendly taproom staff will happily answer questions and fill you in on WeldWerks’ beers, facility, history, and more. The family-friendly taproom has snacks and non-alcoholic beverages if you’re under 21.

It’s in the chile. The “hottest green chile” in Greeley, actually. Alberto’s smothers its burritos in green or red chile, making a great burrito even better. The restaurant offers, “fine Mexican dining in an elegant and relaxed atmosphere.” If you can’t handle the heat, try a frozen margarita to take the edge off.

It’s unlikely you’ll find yourself complaining about a taco bar. I mean, it’s tacos, people. But after you have Luna’s Tacos & Tequila cater your event, you may never look at a taco bar the same again. With choices of Beef Barbacoa, Carnitas, Mushroom, Chorizo and Potato, Pork Molé, and Chicken Adobo, the thought of taco-seasoned beef just seems, ‘eh.’ Add Yuca Fries, Brussels sprouts, or roasted jalapenos to really impress your guests.

If sauce makes the wings, it’s funny to know that owner Brian Seifried and his brother forgot to even create sauce recipes until the night before they opened the doors of their first Wing Shack location on 8th Avenue. Thank goodness they remembered, and now we have sauces of the month like Sriracha cilantro.

Owner Brian Seifried says it’s not a competition. The two restaurants only add to the overall awesomeness of downtown Greeley. Besides, can you really ever have too much guacamole?

ing Shack celebrated its 15th anniversary this June, something that owner Brian Seifried attributes to “a lot of duct tape and good karma.”

Seifried was 20 years old when he fell into an opportunity to open a restaurant with his brother.

“We were fortunate enough to scrape together a few dollars,” Seifried says. “We identified Greeley as a place that didn’t have a restaurant specializing in wings and was a college town. The rents were affordable.”

They found their location on 8th Avenue, where they rented the restaurant space for $750 per month and lived in the apartment above for $450 per month.

Other challenges like realizing when they went to get a business license that they were actually located in Garden City, not Greeley, discovering the night before opening that they hadn’t made any sauce recipes, and opening a hot kitchen in June with no air and a n Best chicken wings fan that didn’t work. n Best take out “The fan didn’t work so there was a lot of this thick To go: greasy smoke,” Seifried says.

Seifried bought out his brother shortly after opening and has grown the Wing Shack to six locations and a food truck.

“We source local ingredients and use quality chicken,” he says. “All chicken wings are not created equal. Our chickens are all-natural, vegetarian-fed, humanely slaughtered, and air-chilled.”

He also attributes his staff and their customer service philosophy to the company’s success.

“We always treat people like they’re our neighbor,” Seifried says. “We have a sense of hospitality and taking care of people. Wings aren’t fancy but they’re fun. It’s people sharing time with friends or family. Food creates bonds, brings out emotions and reminds you of things. Having a passion for people and pride in what we do is a big part of it.”

Seifried believes that the Wing Shack should give back to the community through sponsorships and partnerships with schools and other non-profits.

“It’s part of what it means to be a small business in a small community,” he says. “Being a part of the community and building connections with people who were generous to help get us off the ground. We’re grateful to the community for all the support and love we’ve received. People are conscious of supporting individual restaurants and businesses. Local restaurants give soul to a community.”

Wing Shack continues to grow and move forward with new innovations and new projects Seifried undertakes. His latest creation, locally-owned NoCo Nosh, is a co-op food delivery service developed between 35 restaurants in Greeley, Fort Collins, and Loveland to help protect restaurants from services like Grub Hub and Door Dash.

“It’s better for restaurants and drivers,” Seifried says.

“Wing Shack is now delivering for the first time in 15 years. It’s the biggest innovation at Wing Shack since the boneless wing.”

ommy Rizo, hair stylist at Cost Cutters, beat out all other hair stylists in Greeley, in a category that had the highest vote participation and the highest number of nominated entrants at 67, to be this year’s Best of Greeley best hair stylist.

Rizo began styling hair in high school, but knew ever since he was little how much he enjoyed hair. He started using box colors from Walmart and foils from his grandma’s kitchen to experiment dying his friends’ hair.

After he graduated from Northridge High School, Rizo says he didn’t do much with hair. Four years ago, his grandfather was diagnosed with throat cancer. Rizo began to care for his grandfather full time. During that period, he started doing hair again.

“It was just something I would do on the side. My grandpa would see my friends come over and he would tell me, ‘Your girlfriends, when they come over, they come looking scary’,” laughs Rizo. “I told him, ‘You can’t be saying that about my friends.’ He says, ‘They look scary when they come and when they leave you make them look so beautiful.’

“He would always tell me I was blessed and that doing hair is a part of who I am.”

Rizo ended up taking care of his grandpa for four years, during which his grandfather constantly asked him why he wasn’t following his dream and passion of doing hair.

“When I think back on it now, at that time he wanted it more for me than I did for myself, Rizo says.” I didn’t believe I could go back to school and do what I wanted to do.”

A routine surgery to change out a feeding tube at the hospital resulted in his grandfather’s death.

“For three months after he died I had no sense of direction,” Rizo says. “Three months passed and one day I woke up and it all came to me. I knew what I needed to do.”

Rizo enrolled and was accepted into the IBMC cosmetology program. With his grandfather’s voice in the back of his head as his drive and motivation, Rizo completed the two-year-program in 14 months.

“Every time I didn’t think I could do it, I would remember a Bible verse my grandpa used to read to us that basically said, ‘Call unto me and I will answer’.”

Straight out of school Rizo was able to travel to New services

York and Philadelphia to work with amazing stylists and salons, including MOB Salon. The owner of the salon had seen his work on social media during school and paid for Rizo and his husband to go out for a six-month internship.

With aspirations to become a celebrity hair stylist who traveled the world, Rizo has scaled back his dreams to incorporate his husband and their two children.

He’s been at Cost Cutters for the last three years and says he loves waking up and working with his clients, one of which is the former Miss Rodeo Colorado.

Rizo continues to work to build his clientele and his brand, Slay’d by TJ. TJ stands for Tommy Jr. He also gives back to the community in the best way he knows how — through haircuts. Twice a year he gives free haircuts for children of single parents receiving any form of assistance.

“It doesn’t matter if they have one or 10 kids, they all get a free haircut,” he says. “I usually do it right before school and at Christmas break. I do One Day, One Help at Island Grove. I love giving back. Someone could be homeless and not have the best clothes, but if they have a good haircut and know they look good, they’ll feel good.”

Rizo says he’s built an amazing relationship with the staff he works with and has never wanted to be a stylist who bounces from salon to salon.

“When I make a commitment, I make a commitment.”

But he does aspire to one day own his own salon.

“I do what I do because of my grandpa,” Rizo says. “There are some days I don’t feel like getting up and doing hair and I tell myself, ‘This is who I am. I am a hair stylist.’ This is what God blessed me with, the ability to make people look and feel beautiful. I owe a lot of credit to my grandpa.

He always pushed me and told me to be who I was.”

“I

t’s my pleasure,” is more than just a saying for owner Ken Rotramel and his staff at Chick-fil-A in Greeley.

After working in the airline industry, Rotramel owned a Chick-fil-A in Denver and then Loveland before settling in Greeley. Chick-fil-A has been a part of the Greeley community for five years now, and benefits from Rotramel’s focus on serving others and giving back.

“We’re in the people business. We’re serving people amazing food in service to the community,” Rotramel says. “I give credit first and foremost to founder Truett Cathy, who really set the stage for our brand and his son, Dan Cathy, who is the current CEO, and wanted to be known as much for our ‘My pleasure,’ service as our chicken sandwich.”

Rotramel says he drank the Kool-Aid and fell in love with the philosophy of the service model and developing leaders.

“Even though we’re fast food I think most of our customers would agree that we have better service,” he says.

“I bought into it. The beauty of the franchise agreement is we get to add our own local flavor. We set very high expectations for all team members that get hired.”

Rotramel’s opening line in his franchise’s culture statement is, “Our culture is caring, welcoming, inclusive, and diverse. But it is not for everyone.”

“I tell new hires it might sound harsh but it’s the reality,” he says. “If serving others doesn’t come naturally for you, you might be on the wrong bus. There are many people passionate about the restaurant industry. I’m not. I feel passionate about serving my community. If you’re on the right bus, at some point within the first month or so, it really does become your pleasure to serve our guests.”

Combined with their vision statement, “We strive to be remarkable and have our raving fans tell us so. We aspire to be professionals who care for each other and our guests to create lasting relationships,” which employees must memorize, the bar is high for staff. But they’re up for the challenge.

“It says what we’re trying to do, and then we hold every team member to those standards. But we also understand we make mistakes, we’re human. We have emotions.” services

Currently, the kitchen team is working on a five-for-five challenge, where they strive to serve Rotramel five core items 100% correct on the same visit when he stops in randomly. If they all temp correctly, taste right, have the right amount of coater, etc., the team has won the challenge.

“It comes back to the standards,” he says. “Truett didn’t invent the chicken, just the chicken sandwich. We really stick with every recipe item he established. We want our employees to understand the importance of not deviating from the standards. We’re not like any other fast food restaurant out there. We don’t have a microwave in our restaurant.”

Aside from serving customers in the restaurant itself, Chick-fil-A of Greeley serves in the community by working with the schools and helping teachers reward their students.

They recently completed their first Habitat for Humanity build after years of donations of food and volunteers.
