Martin Jerome Masar October 31, 1956 - October 30, 2019 On October 31st, 1956, Edith Mae and Paul Anthony Masar gave birth to Martin Jerome Masar in David City, NE. Martin was baptized in the Catholic Church and grew in his faith as an active part of the youth ministry. He spent much of his childhood in Craig, CO where his father taught him to love the outdoors, learning to fish and hunt. These past times remain a large part of the Masar family today. Martin met his wife, Vicky, while in college in Omaha, Nebraska. They were married in Lexington, Nebraska in August of 1980. They have four children that were all raised in La Junta, Colorado. Martin graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska and received his Masters of Social Work from the University of New Mexico-Highlands. He started his career at St. Joseph's Hospital of Mental Health in Omaha. After graduating Creighton, Martin moved his family to La Junta, Colorado to work at Southeast Mental Health. Four years later Martin began work at the Colorado Boys Ranch where he worked for 30 years counseling youth and their families. It was at the Colorado Boys Ranch that Martin developed many friendships and expanded his philosophy regarding child therapy across the world. This included helping to establish a residential treatment center for youth in Belgrade, Serbia. In 2012 after the Colorado Boys Ranch closed, Martin opened Ryon Medical, an integrated medical and mental health facility. As Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ryon Medical, he was designated as a diplomate of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress and in Clinical Social Work. The family that was created through Ryon Medical will continue to serve the greater southeastern Colorado, following the philosophy he and his colleagues developed. In 2014, Martin and his wife, Vicky, opened

Colorado Plains Home Health LLC., with High Plains Medical Center. Martin's philosophy with children and families through social work and counseling have influenced professionals nationwide. On October 30th, 2019, Martin Masar lost his battle with cancer at Penrose St. Francis Main in Colorado Springs with his family by his side. He is preceded in death by his father Paul Masar, brother Brian Masar, two nephews Brian Estep and Chadd Hambidge, and niece Michelle Torrez. He is survived by his mother Edith Masar of Canon City; brothers Paul Masar of Black Forest, Tom Masar of Florence, and Mark Masar of Florence; sisters Mary Estep of Anderson, Missouri, Cathy Barban of Castle Rock, and Theresa Masar of Colorado Springs. His surviving immediate family include his favorite wife Vicky and eldest son Martin Ryon; daughter Emily Price and her family consisting of husband Jacob, and daughters Jaela and Ava of Montrose; son Travis and partner Kent of Denver; and youngest son Jared and his family consisting of wife Raquel Barata and son Julian of Del Rey Oaks, California. Martin is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Martin lived his life with compassion, integrity, and joy. His days were spent looking for the small things that make life truly worth living. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family. Please join us to celebrate Martin's life on Thursday, November 7th at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick's Parish. The rosary will begin at 1:30 p.m. and the funeral mass at 2:00 p.m. We will then have a celebration of his life at the Koshare Indian Museum in the Kiva from 5:30-8:00 p.m., all who knew him are welcome to join his family in this joyous occasion. Ashley Smith as new mayor By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

Ashley Smith will serve as Cañon City’s second woman mayor when she is sworn into office in January. Smith, who currently serves as mayor pro tem, surpassed her opponent, former mayor Tony Greer, a write-in candidate, in Tuesday’s election by garnering more than 78 percent of the votes. “I’m just really thrilled to have Cañon City’s vote of confidence to trust me to be their representative and to take care of this community for them,” Smith said Tuesday night. She said her campaign truly was a team effort. “My motto, ‘Getting Results Together for Cañon City’ – that’s really what it was – everybody really coming together,” she said. “I am looking forward to us continuing doing that in the future. I’d like to tell Cañon City residents that I’m ready to go, and I hope that they have their seatbelt on because we are all going to go on a good ride.” Looking toward her first term as mayor, Smith anticipates “big changes,” including the city becoming more friendly for business, new growth, attracting new development for the riverfront corridor and tackling the homelessness issue in the community. Smith is only the second female to serve as Mayor of Cañon City; the late Ruth Carter served on council in 1992 and then ran for mayor in 1995 at the age of 79.

While that is unique, Smith said what matters most is one’s ability to serve in the office – male or female. “I hope this is an opportunity to blaze a trail for other women and especially to be a mentor to young women,” she said. Smith said her husband, Dr. David Smith, and their children have been supportive during the campaign and have been her champions for the last several months. “I’m hoping to be raising some future elected-officials,” she said of her children. “I’m grateful for my beautiful family and for my parents that came up from Texas to be here today, too.” Dr. Smith said his wife has

worked hard and she is committed to improving Cañon City. “She has the time, the energy and the experience to do a great job as mayor,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier. She has a great vision for what needs to be done to move things forward in a positive way for our community.” Greer said he knew that going into the campaign as a write-in candidate was going to be a “tremendous challenge” and that the odds were not in his favor. “At the end of the day, I think we all want what’s best for the community,” he said. “My attitude from the beginning has just been that I want to contribute to the community. I put my ideas

out there and if the voters like my ideas and I win, then great, if not, then I had it wrong.” He said at the end of the night, differences need to be set aside and support needs to be shown to the elected leaders. “I think governing is all about compromise,” he said. “We have to keep in mind it’s about the people we serve and not about our own egos.” If he is asked to run again, Greer said he probably would. “I will continue to look for ways to contribute to the community,” he said. “This community has been very, very good to me, so I feel an obligation to contribute however I can.”

Bobbi-Jo Lynn Feezor August 25, 1988 - October 24, 2019 Bobbi-Jo Lynn Feezor was a beautiful soul she was a daughter, sister, and mother to her only son, Donaven Gene Feezor. She was taken from us so suddenly at such a young age that it's so hard to believe. She was loving, caring, a jokester, and was there for anyone in need. She loved with all her heart and wore her heart on her sleeve. She is survived by her parents, Mark Feezor and Tina (James) Sanford; her grandpa, Donald (Diane) Feezor; her sisters, Jessica (Chris) Swift, Danielle (Jared) Sharp, Latashia (James) Chappel; and her brothers, Timothy Vierra and Mark

(Brudder) Feezor. Bobbi's son and her girlfriend, Nicole Sanchez was her entire life and she made sure she took time for her nieces and nephews, Selena, Jared Jr., Reba, Riley, Lewis, Charlie, and Terry William (T.W.). She was preceded in death with her grandparents, Thomas (Shirley) Garcia and Sandra Lovato; also her aunt, Tanji Jackson. Her celebration of life will be November 8, 2019 at Four mile community club (Steinmeier Ave and East Main St. Canon City, CO) from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and it will be a potluck dinner.

Community brief Starpoint announces staff appointments Starpoint, a provider of coordinated services and support for people with developmental disabilities and their families since 1977, announces two recent staff appointments: Julie Watts as Chief Financial Officer and Jami Roy as Human Resources Director. Watts and Roy report directly to Chief Executive Officer Bob Arnold and Watts also serves on the Foundation Board of Directors. The CFO is responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the company, including financial planning and analysis, accounting and financial reporting, as well as managing the tax, treasury, audit and banking relationship functions. Incumbent Jim Meisner, new faces elected By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

Cañon City voters on Tuesday selected the individuals who will represent them on the council and steer the direction of the city for the next four years. Five candidates ran for two Cañon City At-Large council positions: Andrea Stein, Nicola Hagans, Erik Embry, incumbent Jim Meisner and Brandon Smith. Smith took the lead with 30.66 percent of the votes with Meisner coming in second with 26.17 percent. Stein received 16.06 percent while Hagans received 13.65 percent and Embry got 13.46 percent. “I want to thank everybody for donning yard signs and buttons and all the voters,” Smith said. “It’s just going to be about sitting down and seeing what’s next. My platform was always to finish funded projects and only take on projects that we can pay for.” Once he is sworn in on the council, Smith will be vacating his seat on the Cañon City Planning Commission, where he has served nearly two years. Meisner said he also appreciates the votes and the support from the community. “I appreciate the other candidates joining in on the race and trying to make things better for our city,” he said. Going into his second term, Meisner said his priority is to continue working on

The Cañon City School Board has three new members: Beth Gaffney, Michael Near and Robin Reeser. Gaffney received 28.94 percent of the vote, Near received 24.33 percent, Reeser received 21.58 percent, Maripat Sparks received 14.73 percent and Robert Martin received 10.42 percent. The current school board will decide who will fill what position: president, vice president or assistant secretary/treasurer. The terms are four years. Gaffney said she is ready to get to work. “I’m really excited,” she said soon after the election results were announced. “The current board has done so much good work and I’m excited to be a part of continuing that work and there’s a lot of big shoes to fill, but we are going to do our best.” During an Oct. 17 school board candidate forum, Gaff-

ney said she was seeking votes because she wants to support everyone involved in the district. “Over my 29-year career, I have taught in the elementary schools,” she said. “I taught gifted ed in almost every school in the district. … I served as a principal and (understood) the challenges of principals, administrators and the district as a whole. I want to support teachers and families and kids.” During the forum, Gaffney was asked to speak about bullying. “I think bullying has definitely increased in the last probably 15-20 years,” she said. “And I think maybe part of that is because we have not focused a lot on social, emotional needs of kids. One of the most important ways that you can avoid bullying is to build a strong school culture where kids feel like they belong.” Near said he will be working with good people. “I’m really excited to work

Saturday, November 23rd, at Pathfinder Park The 9th Annual 5K Turkey Trot will be held at Pathfinder Park between Cañon City and Florence on CO Hwy 115 Saturday, November 23rd. It will take runners through Pathfinder Park on the system of trails. This is a relatively flat course and suits runners of all abilities. This is a great way to spend a beautiful November Saturday before Thanksgiving. It will once again be a Fun Run, meaning it is not a timed event. Participants are encouraged to dress up in a costume and dogs are welcome, but you must clean up after them. Have your pets in costume as well. Participants may run or walk the 5K and there will be multiple stations along the course. At these stations you will be required to perform an exercise/calisthenic. Once you complete this exercise, you will earn a ticket. At the end of the race the awards will be drawn from the tickets you received along the course. When: Where: 5K Run: Fees:

There are currently 90 children in care in Fremont County alone. 30 of these children are placed out of the community due to a shortage of foster families. If you would like to know more about what you can do to keep our kids in our community, please come to an informational meeting. They are held the 3rd Monday of every month from 5-6 at Fremont County DHS.
