April 1, 1958 ~ October 2, 2018 Cynthia K. Angel "Cyndi", passed away October 2, 2018, in Canon City, Colorado. She was a long time resident of Florence, Colorado, where she was an accountant. Cyndi was born April 1, 1958 in Florence, Colorado to Charles and Ruth (Beard) Breece. She grew up in the Wetmore and Florence, Colorado area. She was a 1976 Florence High School graduate. She enjoyed gardening, creating many needle point crafts, and reading. Cyndi also enjoyed going to car shows with her husband, Dana and showing off their '55 Chevy Nomad. She loved to cheer on her Colorado sports teams especially the Broncos, and Rockies. Cyndi is survived by her husband of 16 years, Dana Angel; sons, Nick (Natalee) Brace Scott (Quinn) Brace, Brandon (Cassie) Angel, and Jason (Amanda) Angel;

mother, Ruth (John) Spaar; siblings, Frank (Debbie) Breece, Debbie (Bruce) Summers, and Jackie (Dick) Massaro; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Breece; brother, Robert Breece; and beloved niece, Jillian Summers. A visitation will be held 9:00 to 9:30 am and the Rosary is scheduled at 9:30 am at the St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Florence on Saturday, October 6, 2018, followed by a Mass of Christian burial. Christa Jolyn Crossno October 9, 1987 - September 29, 2018

Christa Jolyn Crossno, 30 passed away September 29, 2018. She was born October 9, 1987 to Bryon and Cheryl (Peterman) Crossno in Canon City, CO. Christa grew up in Canon City and Penrose communities. After graduating from Garden Park High School, she attended and graduated from American Institution of Dental Hygiene and began her career in the dental industry working at Peak Dental Center. Christa was very talented in drawing and poetry. She loved animals, especially dogs and cats. Christa didn't understand mean people and didn't know the meaning of the word mean. Her smile was infectious, and her laughter made everyone smile but most importantly, Christa

loved her family. She is survived by her mother Cheryl (Gary) Gillis, father Bryon Crossno, brother Ben (Becki) Basham, grandmother Marie Gillis, grandparents Bob and Mary Basham, great uncle William Terry of Lawton, OK, plus numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Billy and Pauline Crossno, Leonard Gillis, Jr and her aunt Pam Gillis. August 29, 1930 ~ September 25, 2018 Longtime local resident, Maxine Florence Ice, age 88 passed away on September 25, 2018 in Portland, Oregon following a brief illness. Maxine was born August 29, 1930 in Mullinville, Kansas to Bev Lewis and Alpha (Cottrell) McClaren. She was a graduate of Pritchett High School. Maxine married Robert (Bob) Leo Ice in Raton New Mexico on October 3, 1951 and they made Canon City their home in 1952. Maxine was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed family, gardening, traveling, hunting, camping and fishing. In Canon City, she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Maxine is survived by her brother, Dale (Quin) McClaren; daughter, Judy (Al) Marshall; son, Stephen

(Margaret) Ice and granddaughter, Emily Ice. Ector Manuel Rodriguez 65, of Florence passed away unexpectedly September 30, 2018. He was born in Raymondville Texas on December 30, 1952 to Santa Anna and Estefana Rodriguez. In his younger years he served his country proudly in the US Army and was honorably discharged. Many will remember Ector from Fremont Lanes Bowling Alley which he owned and operated for over 20 years. He was known to the community for his kind demeanor and willingness to help those in need. When he wasn't working, he took time to enjoy life which included spending time in the mountains, hunting and fishing. Ector also enjoyed relaxing while trying his luck in Cripple Creek. He will be missed by many but never forgotten. He is survived by his son

Ernestine "Ernie" Sullivan January 2, 1929 - September 25, 2018

Ernestine "Ernie" Sullivan died at her home in Florence on September 25, 2018. She was 89. Ernie was born into the Harrison family, Augusta, GA, on January 2, 1929. She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Claude "Sully" Sullivan (former pastor of Florence United Methodist Church), her parents, Frank and Ruby, her sister, Earlene and her brother, Otis. As an Air Force wife for 29 years and a pastor's wife for over 10 years, Ernie made a wonderful, loving home for her family, wherever home happened to be. She was passionate about everything she did: cooking, RV'ing, gardening, sewing, feeding "her" squirrels and humming birds, photography, genealogy, United Methodist Women, caring for her family, her church gamily and anyone who needed her. Together, Ernie and Sully decided to donate their bodies to the Colorado State Anatomical Board for

medical research. Everyone who knew Ernie agrees that she was the most loving, giving person they ever knew. Ernie is survived by 4 daughters, Susan Weinberg (Walter), Claudia Hoover (Chuck), Laura Lopata (Mike), Debbie Whitehead (Charlie); 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. We wish to express our heartfelt love and gratitude to all of "Ernie's Angels" who did everything they possibly could to allow Mom to die in her home, just as Sully did. Betty Mae (Olson) Walker, 90, reunited with her family in heaven on September 21, 2018. She was born November 9, 1927 to her loving parents, Axel E and Betzi (Johnson) Olson in Victor, Colorado. She was the fourth born out of seven children. She grew up in Victor where she and her siblings played baseball, broke many windows, and playing baseball even caused Betty to have a permanent bump on her head. She and her siblings had a wonderful childhood with many adventures, and wild memories. Her favorite memories had to do with her mother's wonderful cooking, running around outdoors, and playing in their playhouse. She graduated from Victor High School in 1945. On August 31, 1947 Betty married the love of her life Jack Walker. Together they had one daughter, Laraine Walker Martyn. They raised their daughter while owning and operating Harshier Corner in Victor, but later moved to Canon City in August of 1971. Betty held many jobs in Canon including the power plant, hospice, meals on wheels, and political offices. She

loved talking politics, listening to music, and being around family and friends. Betty really enjoyed listening to Jimmy Buffett, and was the oldest parrot head in Fremont County. Betty is survived by her siblings, Norman Olson, Mary Lou Scofield, and Shirley Beach; grandchildren, Chandra Martyn, Bret Martyn, Lane Martyn; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Martyn, Tristen Lehnhoff, Chad Martyn and Tyler Martyn. She was preceded in death by her parents, Axel and Betzie Olson; husband, Jack Walker; daughter, Laraine Walker Martyn; brothers, Axel R. and Ernest Olson; sister, Dagny Chambers; The family would like to thank Skyline Ridge Nursing Home and Stephanie Hales for the care they gave her in her final years. Obituary Paul Michael "Mike" Villa January 10, 1951 - September 16, 2018

Paul Michael "Mike" Villa, 67, of Canon City, Colorado, passed away September 16, 2018 at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado after losing his 8 year battle with Alzheimer's. He was born January 10, 1951 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee to Beatrice Ann Wahl and Paul Marion Villa, both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter Jessica Leiser, ex-wife Jennifer Villa, son-in-law Christopher Leiser, grandson Casen Leiser, and his sister Toni Streety. Mike was proud to serve his country in both the US Army and US Army Reserves from 1970 to 1996 working his way up the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel and was honorably discharged at the end of his tenure. In 1996, his reserve unit, the 5502nd US Army Hospital, was mobilized to Heidelberg, Germany during the Bosnian Conflict where he worked as a Nurse Anesthetist. He received numerous awards during his time in service including an Army Commendation

Medal, an Armed Forces Service Medal and a National Defense Service Medal. He worked as a Nurse Anesthetist for 26 years, with upwards of 10 years at St Thomas More Hospital in Canon City and was greatly respected by his colleagues. He was an avid outdoorsman who grew up surfing in Florida and climbed every Fourteener multiple times during his 30+ years in Colorado. He loved to hike and snowshoe and spent the majority of his spare time at his cabin in Cuchara, Colorado. He loved baseball, jazz music and German beer. He was dearly loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery at 3:15 pm on Friday, October 19. A Celebration of Mike's Life will follow on Saturday, October 20 at 5 pm at Rock Bottom Brewery 9627 E County Line Rd, Centennial, CO 80112. JJ’s Helping Paws Join Forces with Other Animal Groups to Help with a Hoarding Situation

The numbers are staggering, at least 80 cats and kittens were rescued from a hoarding situation in Pueblo, two of the females are still pregnant. Wild Blue Rescue of Black Forest was the first to be aware of this problem, and from the very beginning they worked hard to solve it. Wild Blue contacted JJ’ Helping Paws of Fremont County, which helped with the planning, setup, and trapping of these animals. JJ’s Helping Paws also helped finding a Vet, Dr. Julie Sperry, who performed the large number of sterilization procedures required at low cost over a two day period. These animals were also tested, vaccinated, and dewormed. Animals with upper respiratory infection were treated with antibiotics and eye drops. Many special thanks to: Dr. Julie Sperry of The Cliffes Veterinary Clinic in Silver Cliff, Colorado who has been performing sterilizations for JJ’s Helping Paws TNR program for several months, and who was so instrumental helping during this hoarding situation. Wild Blue, took 10 socialized felines and 33 kittens. Two adults already adopted! Southern Colorado Spay Neuter Clinic of Pueblo took 9 kittens, and will be finding homes for them. Black Forest Animal Sanctuary, Colorado Springs took 10 community cats that eventually will be placed in barns. They also provided advice because of the experience they have had in the past with hoarding situations. In addition, 8 other community cats went to private barns. A very positive and rewarding outcome for the lives of these cats and kittens.
