Verna Pearl Cater
October 14, 1933 ~ August 29, 2018
Verna Pearl Cater, 84, passed away on August 29, 2018. She was born on October 14, 1933 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Howard and Maxine (Wooten) Moon. Verna grew up in Montrose Colorado. In 1950, Verna married Norman "Spec" Roy and they had two daughters, Diana and Vickie. In 1962, Verna married Eugene Cater and from that marriage had two stepdaughters, Genalee and Nanette and stepson, Wesley. She worked at J.C.Penny in Canon City in the 1960s. Verna was also a waitress at many restaurants throughout her life. She loved waiting tables and had such fond memories of coworkers and patrons. Verna loved reminiscing about those days of old. Some of the places she worked were Sali's Paradise, The Shanty Café, Merlino's Belvedere, and the Rib House. While living in Pagosa Springs for a couple of years she managed the Pagosa Hot Springs Hotel and also worked at Jan's Café. Verna loved to dance and loved listening to Elvis Presley. You could always find her on the dance floor. She loved to joke around with everyone and always had a smile on her face. She loved her family more than anything in her life. She truly cherished her family especially the grandchildren and great
grandchildren. Verna is survived by her daughters, Diana Globoker of Spearfish, South Dakota and Vickie (Mike) Butts of Canon City, Colorado; step-daughters, Genalee (Jake) Mouriquand of Canon City, Nanette (Doug) Evan of Colorado Springs; sister, Mary Ellen Coffee of Montrose, Colorado; grandchildren, John Lee (Christina) Globoker, Byron Center of Michigan, Christine (Eric)Wysock of Loveland, Patricia (Jeremy)Dunn Grand Ridge, Texas, Brian (Trisha) Konty of Canon City, Richard (Beth) Mouriquand of Canon City, Angie Manney and Jermmiah Evan of Colorado Springs; great-grandchildren, Makenzie and Tyler Konty, Hope and Christopher Globoker, River and Winter Wysock. Kylie and Jaeger Dunn; nieces, Adele (Bill) Frangos, Roanna Griffin; and nephew, Mauri Dolan. She was preceded in death by grandson, Billy J. Sexton III; stepson, Wesley Cater; niece, Raonna Spaulding; and great-niece, Danielle Spalding. At Verna's request no services will be held. Kenneth "Ed" Gilliland Jr. November 26, 1959 - August 24, 2018
Kenneth "Ed" Edward Gilliland, Jr., of Williamsburg, CO, passed away unexpectedly on August 24, 2018. Ed was born November 26, 1959 Gadsden, AL to Kenneth Gilliland, Sr., and Margaret Beck. A lifelong resident of Fremont County, Ed graduated with the Florence High School Class of "78. Ed was a superb athlete in junior high lettering in basketball, track, wrestling and football. In his youth he loved rodeos, participating in barrel racing and cattle roping. Ed was a jack of all trades. Many will know him from his time at Walmart. He also worked as a roofer and artisan, car mechanic and engines repair; really there wasn't
much he couldn't do. He is survived by his son, Kenneth "Eddie", daughters, Carrie and Jessica Gilliland, siblings; Janice (Jon) Lawhead, Jim (Sue) Gilliland, Brian Beck; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and brother Gary Beck. He was also preceded in death by his infant grandson Sean Patrick Gilliland (2003). October 25, 1945 - September 4, 2018 Mary Gladys Hall Died at home on September 4, 2018 at the age of 73 Born on October 25, 1945, to Charles Edward and Emma Marie (Decker) Muntzert. She was born at home near Toponas, CO, she was delivered by her Grandmother and Great Grandmother Decker. She came in the world fighting for air. The family moved to Canon City when she was two, because of the Health of her baby sister. She attended school in Canon City from 1st grade to 12th graduating in 1966. She is survived by Husband David Hall, Sons Ray Dean (Jennifer) Hall of Sugar City, CO, Bill (Gayla) Shaefer Grand Junction, CO, Tod Hall of Canon City, and Daughter Carrie Hall of Lincoln, Nebraska. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Rod, Jim, Roscoe and Charlie Hall Shakira King, and
Kimber King. Also Sisters Anna (George) Tillman and Charlotte (Keith) Bumgarner. Brother-in-laws Rudy and George Hall. And many loved nieces and nephews. When the kids were younger she was active in 4H and the Egeria Creek Roping Club. She often hauled her kids and neighbor kids to High School Rodeos and cheered for them all. After moving back to Canon City she got involved in the Cattle Women of Fremont County, serving as Secretary for many years. She enjoyed helping serve meals for the Cattle Women events. She was preceded in Death by her parents, and late husband Darwin Shaefer. Memorial Services will be held Sunday, September 9th 11 am at the family home 2688 County Road 3 West of Canon City.

December 9, 2009 - September 3, 2018
Brycen James Zerby, of Greeley, CO (formerly of Canon City) went to be with the Lord on Monday. Sept. 3, 2018 while serving with his church in Windsor, CO. He was born on Dec. 9, 2009 to Jimmy and Melissa (Mueller) Zerby in Pueblo, CO. Brycen was "all boy". He loved the Broncos, NASCAR racing, football, baseball, soccer, swimming, riding bikes, jumping on the trampoline, hunting, fishing, and he loved to sing and dance. He was the typical redhead, friendly, outgoing, at times a little ornery, and he never stopped talking. If it was fast, loud and crazy, Brycen was all about it! Brycen was the best brother, always looking out for his sisters and willing to play whatever the game of the day was with them. He loved snuggling up with his Mommy, and wrestling and playing catch with his Dad. On August 12,
2017 Brycen proclaimed his faith in Jesus and was baptized in the Arkansas River in Canon City, CO. His faith in God was real and often observed in his love of Christian music and in his generosity toward others. Brycen is survived by his parents, Jimmy and Melissa Zerby; sisters, Abby (9) and Chloe (6) Zerby; grandparents, Keven "Papa" and Jodee "Mimi" Zerby, and Matthew "Grandpa-pa" and Sharon "Nana" Mueller; and a loving extended family. Brycen's Celebration of Life will be 3:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2018 at Generations Church, 3600 W. 22nd Street in Greeley. Delbert "Del" David Smith, 74, died peacefully on August 31, 2018, surrounded by his family in Spokane, WA. Del was born on September 9, 1943 in Springfield, OH to Arthur and Loscigale (Canterbury) Smith. He graduated from Canon City High School in 1961. He married Beverly Ann Horvath September 26, 1964, and the couple had one child. He enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1965, dedicating a total of 6 years of service to our country. Then in 1970, he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology & Art History from Colorado State University Pueblo. As a kid, he loved baseball. As he grew into adulthood and beyond he enjoyed fishing, tinkering in the yard, a good cup of coffee and spending time with his family. Del was also very talented as an artist in the mediums of drawing, painting and glass etching. Del's main career was spent as a purchasing agent, working in different industries along the way. He also spent time as an educator and with the Colorado Dept. of Corrections.
He was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was tough but fair; loving, generous, talented in so many ways with a slyly wonderful sense of humor; you always had to be on your game around him! He never settled, always striving to be better and provide better for his family with an inner strength, work ethic and resolve second to none. He relished challenges and always stood for what he believed was right; teaching numerous valuable lessons along the way that have been passed along to his grandchildren. Del is survived by his wife, Beverly; their child, Damon (Lauren) Smith; and his grandchildren, Alexander, Abbie-lyn and Alora Smith; his sister Karen "Tiny" Fontecchio (John) and brother Gale (Loretta) Smith along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Art and Loscigale; and his sister, Joy Baker. Del will be cremated in September in Spokane, WA. Family and friends will celebrate his life together at a later date in Colorado; announcement to follow.

Pauline L. Woolsey, 89, passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2018. Pauline was a true native of Canon City and born on October 21, 1928 to a William McCartney and Lucy (Arnold) McCartney. She graduated from Canon City High School and married soon after to Earl E. Woolsey Jr. She was a very loving woman and spent her entire life in the area. For over 15 years Pauline worked at the local Wal-Mart where countless people would have surely met her and saw her wonderful smile, which greeted them as they came in the door to shop. Everyone that met her knew what a gift she was to the world. A very hard working and active person, Pauline was a member of the local Methodist church and of many local fraternal orders and groups that included the local aeries for the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Order of the Eastern Star, Canon City Golden Age Center
and the AARP. She is survived by her four children, Ron (Amy) Woolsey, Linda (John) Sand, Alan (Sherril) Woolsey, Larry (Margaret) Woolsey; eight grandchildren, Jason (Nicole) Sand, Travis Woolsey, Lindsey Woolsey, Justin Woolsey, Dalton Woolsey, Niki Schauer, Sami Schauer and Dani Rae Hall; three great-grandchildren, Angel Archuleta, Abigail Sand and Braydyn Warren. Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Earl E. Woolsey Jr.; both parents; and her dear son, Clyde Woolsey. Beginning Saturday, St. Thomas More Pediatric Health Services (Dr. Melissa Byram, Nurse Practitioner Ashley Hovar, Dr. Ananya Lusero, Dr. Amanda Nedzinski) will offer Saturday Clinics from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at their office located at 1338 Phay Ave., Building D, in Cañon City. Officials praise team who helped apprehend escaped inmates By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record After more than 20 years without an escape from Cañon City’s historic Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility, a duo’s plot to get away Monday quickly was foiled thanks to local law enforcement who responded quickly and effectively. Fremont County Sheriff’s Deputy Colton Miller and Cañon City Police Sgt. Corie Ames were recognized Tuesday for their roles in apprehending two offenders who were seeking freedom from within the walls Monday morning. Mayor Preston Troutman, the Cañon City Council, Cañon City Police Chief Daric Harvey, Interim Sheriff Ty Martin and CTCF Warden Mike Romero recognized Miller and Ames for their quick
thinking and immediate action after offenders George Roloff and Luke Tanner were able to manipulate some systems and get over the wall of the facility. Romero thanked the police department, sheriff’s office and the dispatchers for their roles in the incident. “Without the notifications and the immediate contact, they could have still been in the community or into another community,” Romero said. “From the call and the identification on the inside and on the outside of the prison museum, it was immediately notified, one individual was apprehended within about 10 minutes and the other one within about an hour and a half.” He said officials have about 90 minutes to deal with emergencies before they get further out of
hand. “That was our time frame yesterday,” Romero said. “If it wasn’t for the immediate notification and the quick work of the local law here in Cañon City, we wouldn’t be here right now.” Chief Harvey also praised the sheriff’s office and the Department of Corrections for their cooperation in achieving such a quick resolution, and CTCF Emergency Manager Denny Owens for releasing the necessary information to help identify the escapees. Harvey said the inmates were “part of the museum’s exhibit” when they jumped over the wall. He said everybody who responded was integral as far as helping to set up perimeters and talking to residents, but Ames, who had just returned to work
from maternity leave, was the first person to come into contact with one of the escapees. “When she arrived, she was able to find the suspect who was actually trying to get inside of her car through the passenger door, and she ended up having to fight him off,” he said. “After she fought him off, he started running and she ended up chasing him down on foot.” Deputy Miller apprehended the second escapee. He was at an intersection just two minutes after a stolen vehicle was reported. “He ended up seeing that vehicle,” Harvey said. “If he hadn’t been paying attention, if he hadn’t been right where he was, and if he hadn’t quickly responded and helped out, the second suspect might have gotten away in that stolen car.”
Harvey declined to give details on how the offender obtained the car but said the inmate is a “dangerous individual” who traumatized the people from whom he stole the car. “Absent Sgt. Ames’ and Deputy Sheriff Miller’s actions, who’s to say whether we would have caught these individuals or not,” Harvey said. “The reason that we caught them so quickly is because they were where they were, paying attention and talking to individuals.” Roloff currently is serving time for numerous menacing charges and extortion out of Mesa County. Tanner is serving time for robbery out of Denver County, contraband introduction in Lincoln County and escape and substance abuse in Fremont County.
