Edwin A. J. "Jim" Barkley September 6, 1926 ~ July 23, 2019
Edwin Allen James "Jim" Barkley, born September 6, 1926 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Charles Barkley and Elizabeth (Liggett) Barkley, died July 23, 2019 in Canon City, Colorado at the age of 92. Jim spent his childhood and youth in Rome City, Indiana where he received his early education, developed a strong work ethic and love of nature. Jim joined the U.S. Navy and served in World War II. He was also recalled for duty later during the Korean conflict. He completed bachelor's and master's degrees in biology at Indiana University. On September 6, 1949, Jim married Nita Maria Wireman who caught his eye when they were students at Indiana University. Over the next ten years, they added five children to the family. After spending a few years as a research biologist, Jim moved the family to Colorado. He took a job as a biology teacher at Canon City High School and taught there until his retirement. He was a gifted educator and highly regarded by both students and staff. He helped shape many young lives and careers. He enjoyed many years of retirement where he was free to pursue his love of the outdoors, including extensive gardening, volunteering
at a raptor rehabilitation center, scuba diving, and many trips, both domestic and foreign, with Nita for bird watching, whale watching, and studying local flora. Grandchildren were an important part of his life and he enjoyed sharing his love and knowledge of the outdoors with each of them. Jim was a man who loved the natural world, his family, his country, his God. He made positive contributions to this world and his presence will be greatly missed. He leaves behind his wife Nita, and children Jim (Cathy) of Loma; Kit of Canon City; Richard (Sara) of Englewood; Michael (Jeri) of Canon City; Mary (Tom) of Woodland Park. He also leaves behind grandchildren Kristen (Andres) of Grand Junction; James of Chicago; Shane of Canon City; Rachael of Englewood; Joel of Longmont; Aspen of Woodland Park; and two great grandchildren, Tucker and Ally of Grand Junction. James "Jim" L. Gierhart November 22, 1927 ~ July 19, 2019
James "Jim" L. Gierhart, 91, of Canon City passed away July 19, 2019. He was born in Fort Collins, Colorado on November 22, 1927 to William and Georgia (Waffle) Gierhart. Jim and his family moved to Penrose, CO when he was very young and lived in Fremont County his entire life. He was an Honorably Discharged Veteran. A fun note and accomplishment that Jim was proud of was that in 1950 he ran the Rocky Mountain Pack Burro Race from Leadville to Fairplay over Mosquito Pass and finished in 2nd place then went on to win the race in 1952. Jim was a hard worker his entire life working as a Livestock Trader who specialized in horses. He was one that was truly gifted with the ability to understand the animals he worked with.
In later years he could be found down at Burger King having some breakfast and coffee with "the crew" and he enjoyed going to the VFW for Sunday breakfast. He is survived by his children, Morris (Terry) Gierhart, Charlin Steil, Ron Gierhart, Kenny Gierhart; grandchildren, Shanna (Mitch) Patterson, Dawn (Jake) Domer, J.T. Gierhart, Preston Steil, Roy Gierhart, Kari Gierhart, Taylor Gierhart, Brittany Gierhart, Brook Gierhart; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and grandson, Damien Steil. At his request there will be no services. Services have been entrusted to Holt Funeral Home. Brianna (Bri) Marie Peterson, 28, took her place among the stars Thursday July 25 th, 2019 in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Born February 17th, 1991 in Trinidad, Colorado to her loving mother Dorothy (Dottie) Jean (Hopkins) Hamilton and later was blessed with her amazing father Steven Wayne Hamilton. Brianna loved nothing more than being a mother. Brianna was loyal and giving always putting others needs above her own. Brianna will be missed by all who knew her, she touched many lives. Brianna is survived by her three sons, Talon, Xane and Orion, her loving parents Steve and Dottie, former husband Josh and children Tristan, Rebecca and
Kaylee, mother-in-law Ruth, sisters Brittany, Kandice and Megan, nieces Kayley, Kayanna, Onaleigha and Brynlee, Grandma Jean, many aunts, uncles, cousins and loving friends. She has joined her place in the sky with her Grandma Betty, Grandpa Bill, Grandpa George, cousin Georgia and father-in-law Brad Peterson. A Remembrance Day will be held Saturday August 10 th, 2019 at 1pm at Fourmile Community Hall in Canon City, Colorado. We will be having a potluck so please feel free to bring food. We want this to be a celebration of her life with joyous memories shared.
Arlene Edna Shelley Spaulding August 12, 1927 ~ July 10, 2019
On July 10, 2019, The Lord called his faithful daughter home. Arlene Edna Shelley Spaulding was born on August 12, 1927 to Howard and Mary Shelley. She grew up in the Langell Valley near Klamath Falls, Oregon. Even though times were often hard, she enjoyed her life as she basked in the love of her parents and five older siblings. She attended the local schools while working on the family farm and often working for the neighbors to earn extra income. In February 1946, a young man came to rent a room from her mother who often took in boarders. Two weeks later, he and Arlene were married. This union lasted 44 years until his death. Moving often to find work, the family lived in California, Colorado and Nevada. Arlene was a proud and happy mother to nine children. She was also a masterful magician who could turn the most basic of ingredients into five star meals. She worked occasionally outside the home as a LVN, at the Girl's School in Caliente, NV and for Sears and was active in The Order of the Eastern Star at both the Canon City, CO and Tonopah, NV chapters. Throughout her life, Arlene maintained a close and personal relationship with her
Lord and Savior. Her passing brings an end to an era in that she was the last of the original Shelley's from Langell Valley. She is survived by her children, Barbara Spaulding, Howard (Lynn) Spaulding, Roy (Irene) Spaulding, Gerri Spaulding, Nan (Lee) Hamrick, Judy (Harley) Johnson, Albert "Jimmie" Spaulding and Gary (Sharon) Spaulding as well as a stepson, Thomas (Karen) Spaulding; along with numerous nieces; nephews; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James O. Spaulding; one son, Richard Allen Spaulding; granddaughter, Elizabeth Nicole Spaulding; parents, Howard and Mary Shelley; five siblings, Edward (Elsie) Shelley, Albert (Betty) Shelley, Ella (Bill) Minnick, Ellen (Edward) Kyniston and Lawrence (Hazel) Shelley. Arlene passed peacefully in Tonopah, Nevada in the company of her daughter and longtime caregiver, Nan. Services have taken place. Services have been entrusted to Holt Funeral Home. Lecile Roy Lanning August 21, 1925 ~ July 19, 2019
Lecil Roy Lanning, 93, of Bartlesville, died Friday, July 19, 2019. Lecil was born August 21, 1925 in Elmer, Oklahoma to parents Ray Ervin and Annie M (Brock) Lanning. He served in the United States Navy on the USS Fergus from August 1944 to March 1946. Lecil worked for LP Gas in Guymond, Oklahoma and also Atterbury Grain Company in Pampa, Lubbock and Wichita Falls, Texas from 1975 to 2010, where he tested samples. He married Vera Miller on July 1, 1974. The couple were married until her death on July 1, 2007. Lecil served as President of the Sunrise Lions Club in Canon City, Colorado and was a member of the Church of Christ, also in Canon
City. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, son Mike Lanning, sisters Lola Mae Lanning and Leora Faye Lanning; bothers Steven William, Nathan Earl and Cecil Troy Lanning. Lecil is survived by many, many family members and friends. A celebration of life will be held in Bartlesville, OK on Thursday, August 1, 2019 at 2:00pm. Burial was held at Lakeside Cemetery in Canon City, Colorado with military honors on Friday July 26, 2019 at 10:00am. Donald V. Werthman July 10, 1928 ~ July 24, 2019
Don was born to Theodore and Etta Werthman on July 19. 1928 in Cherokee, Iowa. Don was left with the responsibilities of running the family farm and caring for his younger siblings at the age of 13 after his father passed away. Don married Joyce J. Hansen on February 1, 1951. Don and Joyce worked hard together on the farm. Don also worked as a farm implement mechanic. Don could fix and build anything. In the summer of 1964, they moved to Colorado Springs with their 5 children for a job opportunity as a service manager with Colorado Springs Equipment Company (International). In 1974, Don accepted a management position (Heavy Equipment Manager) with El Paso County DOT and after 20 years of service retired in 1994. During their 33 years in Colorado Springs, they enjoyed square dancing, camping and fishing. Don loved living in Colorado. Don enjoyed riding his horses through his
lifetime until a diagnosis of Parkinson's in 2011. Don and Joyce purchased a home on an acreage outside of Florence in 1997, enjoying the beautiful views of the Wet Mountains and Pikes Peak. Don embraced the quiet and peaceful surroundings of his home. He enjoyed making property improvements, tinkering in his work shop, growing tomatoes in his greenhouse and tending his rose garden. Don had a hay field in Penrose and felt at home as he kept the hay equipment and tractors in top condition and putting up hay. Don is survived by his children, Janice (Ray), Linda (Wayne), Mark, Paul and Monica(Jim), brother Bob and sister Elaine, his 9 grandchildren, whom he positively influenced with his incredible work ethic and honesty and 8 great grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and a sister. Harwood Funeral Home is entrusted with services.

February 4, 1929 ~ July 15, 2019 On July 15, 2019 JoAnn K (Kipling) Smith, wife of Joseph W Smith, passed in peace at home at the age of 90. JoAnn was born February 4, 1929 in Blandinsville, Illinois to Edgar and Aimee (Herzog) Kipling. JoAnn was the last surviving child of Edgar and Aimee's three children, Norma and Marilyn. Chrysalis Consignments August winner Chrysalis Consignments is the second winner in the Cañon City Daily Record and Shopper’s Small Business Contest. Owner Celeste Wilson said she is honored to have won the award and hopes it helps more than just her personal business at 515 Main St. “I want Cañon City to fall in love again with their downtown,” she said. “We can’t be more if we don’t support what is already here. We are not what we hope to be, but we are pretty darn good and working so hard to the best little downtown in Colorado.” The contest, which was launched in March, will award six businesses through the end of the year. A team of independent judges selected the six winners from entry letters. One business will be selected each month through December. Bunk House Burgers was the first winner in the contest. Each winner will receive a free website design and hosting for one year, as well as six months of free digital and print advertising (valued at $500 per month). A grand prize winner will be an-
nounced in January and will receive a renovation package. “As a struggling business, I am not able to spend what I should on advertising,” Wilson said. “And this is the snare … without good, consistent advertising, you can’t grow a business. But you can’t have consistent advertising if your income doesn’t provide it. “I hope this award turns my store around and allows me an abundance that I can give back to Cañon City with.” Chrysalis Consignments is an upscale resale shop for women of all ages. The store doesn’t offer children’s clothing, but it carries a variety of clothing from casual to formal to business. “Nothing in my store can feel preowned,” Wilson said. “If it doesn’t feel new, I don’t accept it for consignment. I also carry shoes, boots, purses, accessories and fine and custom jewelry.” The store is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Glover siblings compete with multiple projects at fair Cambrea Hall The Daily Record
Victoria, Nicole and Jordan Glover have been involved in 4H since they were six and five years old. Twins Victoria and Nicole, 17, will be seniors at Cañon City High School this upcoming school year and brother Jordan, 14, will be a freshman. This year, Victoria is competing in ceramics, foods, breeding and market poultry and horse showmanship. “I have been doing 4-H for 11 years now, but this is my first year with horses. I’m competing with my horse Cookie, who I’ve had since I was 3 years old,” Victoria said. “The judges’ scores are based on how well you handle your horse and how well you compete together — the handler has to stay in control.” Victoria placed third in the gymkhana showmanship and fourth in the western showmanship. This also was Victoria’s first year competing in foods. “I made a vanilla bundt cake, honey oat dinner rolls and a giant Cambrea Hall/Daily Record flower bread,” Victoria said. The Glover children created a variety of projects for the 2019 Fremont County Fair. From “This is my second attempt at making the flower bread. I stayed left, Nicole, Victoria and Jordan.

Nicole also made her first cup on a pottery wheel, which she is using to compete in ceramics. Jordan also is competing in ceramics, foods, food preservation, breeding and market poultry. “I created my first piece on a potters wheel this year: a rice bowl. It took me about 15 minutes but I had to keep restarting and playing with the clay to get it just right,” Jordan said. According to Jordan, in order to be successful in Breeding and Market Poultry, he has to “clean the chicken coop, feed and water the chickens, and make sure that they’re good looking and good for breeding.” The Glover siblings enjoy 4-H and their many different projects for the fair.

Fremont RE-2 School District Fremont RE-2 School District is a consolidated and joint school district. The district serves the communities of Williamsburg, Rockvale, Coal Creek, Penrose, and Wetmore. Florence is the home of the district’s administration offices, Fremont Elementary School, Fremont Middle School, and Florence High School, newly built in 2006. Penrose is home to a K-5 elementary school built in 2005. Florence is located in close proximity to Cañon City, Pueblo and Colorado Springs, and a two-hour drive from Denver. The Plains and Pueblo Reservoir lie about 20 minutes east of Florence. The area is indeed blessed with great diversity in geography, enterprise and culture. The city of Florence has become a mecca for antique dealers and shoppers. Penrose is rich in agricultural produce, especially apple orchards, and Wetmore is a fertile ranching community. Fremont RE-3 School District Cotopaxi Consolidated Schools Located at the western end of Fremont County, School District RE-3 includes five small communities, all within 12 miles of the school, located in Cotopaxi. Four of the five communities are located along the Arkansas River at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range, approximately halfway between Salida and Canon City on U.S. Hwy 50. The school ties these five separate communities together. There is no main industry in the area, but ranching, rafting, recreation, tourism, and the Colorado Department of Corrections employ many people. The recreational possibilities in the area are outstanding and include: Fishing, hunting, backpacking, camping, four wheeling, river rafting, and skiing, are all available within an hour’s drive. The school employs 20 teachers, two administrators, one counselor and 23 support personnel. The district is a member of South-Central Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). The district has approximately 101students in Cotopaxi Early Learning Center and Elementary School, and 121 students in Cotopaxi Junior-Senior High School. The district has been on a four-day week schedule since 1980. School begins at 7:56 A.M. and continues until 4:04 P.M., Monday through Thursday. Fridays are utilized for teacher staff development, parent-teacher conferences, and extra curricular activities.
