‘Maneaba’ Community Centre Pacific Northwest Multicultural Community Services (PNMCS), the client has put together resources to set up a community centre to help the refugees coming in from a different country. The client wishes for a welcoming centre which will be a temporary home for the newcomers. They also want this place to be the link to build connections with the community of the new city and make them self sufficient with education and social service facilities as they begin a new journey in the new city.

Kiribati Islanders - Climate Refugees Kiribati (Kiribas; ti = s) -Islands in Central Pacific Ocean

Why Kiribati?

Rising Sea Levels eating up the island Often they face floods, delay in imports causes food shortage, lost land for agriculture and housing, freshwater sources are being contaminated by pollution and ocean water.

Ocean Acidification Their prime occupation marine life culture is no more flourishing as the ocean waters is polluted and destroyed. This has left them with no means of livlihood and starvation

Proximity of Kiribati to Portland Nearby nations haven’t readily accepted for relocation of people of Kiribatis. They have bought lands in Fiji Islands for agriculture and future relocation, but Fiji too is under threat.

Why this project for case study?

• Geographically in the same region with similar climate.

• They created an artificial biosphere that empathetically creates a familiar environemnt not just for 40,000 species of tropical plants but the multinational employees and visitors, I would like to use the same conceptW to create a comfortable and familiar space for the refugee users coming in from the tropical zone to their new homes.

• A biophilic design inspired interior is expressing a subtle contrasts play in harmony which is a part of my concept for the community centre.

• There is this sense of interactive atmosphere at every corner of the building which connects users to the space on different sensory levels and help leave behind their worries and pains.

• The design is free flowing into these nooks which have a surprising element. Each nook, is designed to be a different environemnt and atmosphere.

Concept This community centre based on the idea of ‘Maneaba’, is a designed on the concept of “Celebrating Life Together ”.

The space will express the feel of warmth , expansiveness and the positivity of unity. This vibe for the community centre will be expressed by a biophilic design with harmony of contrasts, decentralised focal points, rhythmic flow of rigidity. The patterns of light and shadow will play with the natural materials.

‘te-wa’- Seafood Restaurant

This restaurant is “Celebrating a Canoe ride”. Canoe regarded as one of the most prestigeous asset of a Kiribati family. Canoe races are common celebratory practices.

The space will bring an ambience of flowing through water in a canoe with the ripple steel panel ceiling reflecting a blue aura of the accent elements. Canoe are used as ceiling accents and takes a functional role of a planter and light fixture.

Flexi Space Lobby

The lobby is a flexi-space which can transform from an open lobby space to a closed interactive art gallery. This space intended to connect the diverse cultures is “Celebrating the expression of art”.A calm space with shades of neutral colours, subtle textures and plain shapes renders an expansive feel and placing the art in the limelight. Brass accents expresses elegance and grandeur.
