BEHAVIORAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECT OF COLOUR SCHEME The colour harmony is based on the concept “Spring in San Francisco”, the blue green waters, the yellow green leaves and Golden Gate in red. It also complements the goal of the restaurant to serve authentic American food, with fresh ingredients and home-made items. Yellow Green: a colour representing health, well being and freshness. Green colour is synonymous with nature and growth. It is a cool colour which calms the mind and rejuvenates people. It brings joy and emotional security to the space. Blue Green: Blue represents and signifies water element, an obvious feature of San Francisco is represented with blues in the cafe. It is an calming colour which will offset the heat and chaos in the restaurant. Blue green is seen as a colour of royalty. Red: In commercial scenario, it is known to attract attention and of course build hunger. Red brings with it the warmth and coziness to make the restaurant to feel homey. Since the cafe is huge, small accents of red in the wall, furniture will add an interest to the space. The huge walls will advance making the cafe more cozy. Brown: the neutral of a cool colour and warm colour, is present in the flooring and ceiling, the vast surfaces of the cafe has the earthy colour representing the soil grown fresh produce being used for the dishes. It represents traditional and stability, values of the Coast Cafe.

The Coast Cafe Interior FLOOR FINISHES FLOORING SELECTION CRITERIA WOODEN FLOORING: Wooden floor gives a warm and comfortable ambiance to the space. The red undertones is an ideal colour for eatery business to spark excitement and hunger. The larger plank has been specified which lessens the grooves and thus dust and dirt accumulation. The resilient flooring will be soft on the foot of the employees who are standing for long hours. The matte finish has a slip resistance finish to the flooring. The dark colour will prevent shoe prints from being seen, if any. PORCELAIN TILE: The blue-green tile will act as contrast to the wooden floor and help colour-blind users navigate better. It breaks the monotony of the wooden flooring of the cafe. The tile adds a fresh feeling which resonates with the cafe goals and values. The introduction of the tile attracts attention from outdoors and navigate people to the juice-bar. It is also a representative of the sea life. The cool colour will counter the warmth from the southern and western sun. The matte tile has slip resistance finish.

WALL WINDOW TREATMENT SELECTION CRITERIA BRICK WALL: Brick is a material native to San Francisco, and this will make the café feel more authentic and homey. The brick brings in warmth. The toned red under the western sun will be saturated and stand out as a feature. The thin bricks can be easy installed on the existing wall and painted if any changes required in the future. The brick is unfinished, giving a raw and natural look. The material last long and requires very little maintenance. Dusting and wiping will help remove all dirt. This surface being matte, helps reduce glare in the restaurant, since the windows will pour in the sharp southern and western sunlight. PAINT: The Tinted Red paint with hight reflectivity will help brighten the space. The paint is semi-gloss finish and hence no dirt accumulation can occur. The surface can be wiped with soap and water and cleaned. the surface can always be repainted with any colour for a newer look. The Benjamin Moore natural series paint is VOC free and helps keeping the indoor air quality clean. WINDOW SHADES: The Silhoute series window treatment solution from Hunter Douglas has two layers of sheer which act as a barrier to the harmful sun rays. Between the two sheen layers is a layer of vanes which can be adjusted to any desired angle for the desired lighting effect. This system can be automated, it can controlled by phones/tablets used by the restaurant employees. The polyester layers are all GreenGuard certified and have no harmful chemicals, it also has recycled material and anti-fungal which helps keep the space healthy.. The material can be easily cleaned/dusted by vacuuming and wiped with wet cloth incase of stains. This window is crucial to the ambiance of the restaurant during late afternoon and even due to southern and western sun.

BAMBOO CEILING: Since the cafe has a high ceiling, a plenum suspended bamboo ceiling gives way for air circulation within the volume. The ceiling has acoustic properties and has a patterned arrangement of two layers of bamboo. The pattern adds to the aesthetic sense of the cafe and also represents waves of the ocean. FABRICS: The xorel fabrics is 100% plant based with bleach resistant properties. It has a rub resistance of 250.000 which is durable for public space. The green fabric shade adds a freshness to the space and brings in cooling effect and red builds focus to juice-bar. The patterned fabrics for backrest are bleach cleanable and durable with over 75,000 rubs. The neutral background with coloured patterns brings in biophilia and freshness. The contrast between the seater and the backrest adds interest in the space, also helps poor vision users to maneuver easily. They are certified for no toxin and clean indoor air quality.

SEATING: Classic designer chairs from the famous Eero Saarinen has an aesthetic appeal, comfort and coziness. The sleek gold plated steel legs are a contrast to the flooring and add a rich colour element to the space. The cushion is made of foam is comforting to sit on. The back rest is curved and broad giving full support. The seat is wide and spacious to sit for all sized people. The legs are placed away and don’t interrupt dining experience. The chair is lightweight and easy to move around. They have gold rating for indoor air quality.

TABLE: The table is made of 100% recycled industrial steel and has a flat base with a thin leg making it comfortable for handicapped accessibility as well. The edges are rounded to prevent any accidents and hurt. Recycled table top in white, a contrast to the green chairs helps lighten the space. Plain tabletop keeps focus on food. It is Class A rated for flame spread and has a LEED certificate for no toxins, recyclable. It is a cradle to cradle certified. The Coast Cafe Interior JUICEBAR AND CABINETRY DETAILS JUICE-BAR BACK WALL SELECTION CRITERIA CABINETRY: The shutters are made of hardwood. The wood used are FSC approved material. The cabinet has designer grooves. There is a panel and within the panel vertical grooves. Though they might be a task for maintaining, it adds a visual design element to the kitchen area. The employees too feel rewarded with the designer cabinets and will not look like it wasn’t thought of. The shutters are finished with semi-gloss paint from Benjamin Moore natural series which are VOC free. This paint is easy to wipe of any stains and marks making it easy to maintain. These cabinet shutters are LEED certified, CARB certified and ESP certified by Kitchen cabinet Manufacturer’s Association. CABINETRY HARDWARE: The hardware pull is from a commercial company called Richelieu known for making all hardware items. This handle is made of brass and has recycled content, which reduces the raw material extraction. The metal pull is required for durability in a space which has activities involving water, heat, spills and careless handling. It needs to be sturdy to pull the cabinetry and drawers. The simple design is addition to the geometry of the space. This has LEED Certification. BACK-SPLASH TILES: The ceramic tiles are made to look like handmade with a white cloud around to give a water painting effect. These tiles give a mosaic effect to the juice-bar area. The strong geometry of circles sitting in squares creates a very regular pattern. Thus, use of colours along with these patterns is not a burden to the eyes. The tiles are not flammable, making it ideal for use in kitchen area. The tinted red, blue green and shaded blue green tiles in a gray background creates an interesting back wall.
