We welcome commercial and seedstock producers alike to the 8th Annual BJF Limousin Invitational Bull Sale. The 2024 catalogue is loaded with some of the best Limousin genetics.
As a sale group we have focussed on getting the balance between EBVs and the physical functionality of our sale animals right. All of the bulls are commercially relevant and some have very strong stud potential. We are confident that this year’s line-up of bulls will provide all potential buyers with the opportunity to purchase quality animals with the functionality, dispositions and genetics that will progress their breeding programs.
Our aim is to offer genetics that will have a positive impact on beef production. We look to provide buyers with access to genetics that will produce quality beef that in turn provides a quality eating experience for consumers whether eating in at home, dining out at a restaurant or in pubs and clubs. Our sale bulls carry carefully selected modern genetics that produce high yielding, soft, easy finishing progeny with high docility and good weight for age.
We invite everyone to a day of on property inspections and Bull Walk on Thursday 15th August with complimentary food and drinks through the day and into the evening. Inspections on sale day start from 9.00am. Inspections can also be arranged outside of these times by appointment through our agents or directly with vendors.

BUTCHER’S PERSPECTIVE
You may know or you may not. I was actually a butcher before I started breeding Limousin cattle. In 2004 Jodie and I opened Frohlie’s Meats in Yarraman and continue to operate it today. We trialled various breeds over the years, but, as a butcher I found the most profitable to be Limousin. It is not just the high retail beef yield of the Limousin carcase that drives profitability, there are other important advantages of Limousin beef that keep our customers coming back for more.
Number 1 is consistency of Eating Quality.
Limousin beef has a very fine texture, a result of the influence of the F94L gene and as such is naturally tender and maintains moisture with excellent flavour during cooking. The knife cuts through the fine textured Limousin meat much easier than other breeds. Importantly the F94L gene is very heritable and as a result Limousin cross cattle carry the same characteristics.
Number 2 is evenness and optimal amounts of Fat Distribution
As a result of my 20 years of butcher’s experience the type of Limousin cattle that we focus on breeding carry more fat and are much softer than the heavy muscled Limousin of the past. We find that the fat on the Limousin and Limousin cross carcases is in all the right places so wastage is minimal with no effect on eating quality and with no extra feed. We place a strong emphasis on intramuscular fat. Limousin cattle have made massive gains in this important market driven trait in recent years.
When crossed with British or tropical cattle we are getting the perfect article for our butcher shop trade. We receive regular complimentary customer feedback on the flavour, tenderness and consistency of the quality of the Limousin meat. We invite you to drop into our shop and put it to the test.

Sale Information
OUTSIDE AGENT REBATE
A 2% rebate applies to outside agents registering buyers in writing 48 hours prior to the sale, and settling on their behalf within 14 days of the related invoice. Rebate extended to 4% for agents attending the sale.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
The sale is conducted under the ALPA Livestock Auctions terms and conditions (published 2017). These terms and conditions will be displayed on sale day.
BUYER’S INSTRUCTIONS
At the completion of the sale all successful purchasers are required to attend the office and complete a buyer’s instruction and delivery sheet.
TRANSFER OF REGISTRATION
Bulls can be transferred to new owners for registration with the Australian Limousin Breeders’ Society on request.
INSURANCE
Your new purchases are like any other piece of valuable farm equipment and it is wise to insure them especially for the first six/twelve months of their working life.
There are a number of options available through Elders Insurance who will have a representative onsite on sale day to look after your needs. While all care and attention will be taken the liability for sale animals lies with the purchaser at the fall of the hammer.
CATERING
Catering will be provided for morning tea and lunch with all proceeds going towards the local community group.
Everyone is also invited to join us for post sale drinks in appreciation of your support.

VACCINATIONS & TREATMENTS
Sale animals have been vaccinated/treated prior to sale according to recommendations as follows:

All bulls will be semen tested prior to the sale.
SCANNING & SUPPLEMENTARY SHEET
All bulls will be scanned for EMA, Rib & P8 Fat, and IMF, as well as having scrotal sizes measured on Monday prior to the sale.
These and any other relevant updates will be available on the Supplementary Sheet online, in hardcopy on property, or via email on request.
TEMPERAMENT
All of the animals for sale have been screened for temperament and vendors are confident that under normal circumstances each animal in the sale is of sound and acceptable temperament.
It is understandable that an occasional animal may misbehave on sale day due to the exceptional circumstances and the pressures of a number of strange people encroaching on their space.
SETTLING YOUR NEW BULL IN
On arrival at their new home it is important a suitable mob of animals is yarded to greet the newly purchased bull and minimise the stress on him. Suitable animals may include pregnant cows or steers but certainly not other bulls.
The Vendors warrant that:
• Bulls are fertile and capable of natural service within 6 months of date of sale to the purchaser (“Warranty Period”); and
The Vendor will either:
• Provide a satisfactory replacement; or
• Provide a credit for use at the next BJF Limousin Bull Sale equal to the purchase price (excluding any costs and expenses of the purchaser in taking delivery) minus salvage value.
Where the purchaser claims a bull is infertile upon the purchaser submitting a veterinary report after the expiration of the Warranty Period stating that the bull is infertile or incapable of natural service:
• A statutory declaration by the purchaser to the effect that the substance of the report is true and correct must be provided; and
• The veterinarian must state that in his/her opinion there is no evidence that the bull has suffered any injury or illness during the Warranty Period which could have affected his breeding ability; and
• The veterinary report and the statutory declaration must be received by the vendor within 14 days of the Warranty Period expiring.
Warranty
In the case of a warranty claim being submitted within the guidelines above the vendor reserves the right to seek a second veterinarian’s opinion and assessment of the bull as part of the process of settling the claim.
The purchaser acknowledges that:
• The purchaser does not rely, and it is unreasonable for the purchaser to rely, on the skill or judgement of the vendor as to whether the bulls supplied are reasonably fit for any purpose for which they are being acquired.
• To the extent permitted by law all other conditions and warranties implied by law in respect of the state, quality and condition of the bulls which may apart from this clause be binding on the vendor are excluded.
• The vendor has no liability (including liability in negligence) to any person for any loss or damage consequential or otherwise suffered or incurred by that person arising from the sale of the bulls to the purchaser.

All of the sale bulls have been screened for acceptable temperament and are quiet to handle under normal circumstances.
Visitors must accept and understand that there are inherent risks associated with cattle handling and that sale day circumstances are not the normal environment the sale bulls and females.
• Visitors are discouraged from entering the cattle pens and if they do they do so at their own risk.
• Children should be supervised at all times and not allowed to enter the cattle pens.
People entering the cattle pens are at risk of injury.
Be especially alert to bulls fighting and if one is ‘playful’ with you do not respond by patting his head.
What a bull considers a playful nudge can break human legs.
We do not expect bulls to be aggressive with humans but sale day places extraordinary pressure on them as they experience an entirely foreign environment.

Remember even the quietest of bulls are in fact unpredictable animals.
Females with calves at foot may also be more protective than usual in these unfamiliar circumstances.
Do not crowd the animals or loiter in their pens. We cannot cover every example of the dangers associated with cattle handling so please use common sense and be cautious and alert at all times.
Do not enter the pens unnecessarily.

EXPLANATION OF ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES
An Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) is an estimate of the genetic merit of that animal for each trait measured. EBVs are provided for the following traits:
Gestation Length: ranks sires for the time between conception and the birth of a calf. Shorter gestation is indicated by negative EBVs and longer by positive EBVs
Birth Weight: indicates the genetic potential for birth weight. Positive EBVs indicate higher birth weights and negative EBVs indicate lower birth weights of progeny.
200, 400 & 600 Day Weight: give us an estimation of the animal’s genetic potential for growth.
Mature Cow Weight: estimates differences between animals in live weights of cows at 5 years of age.
Milk: a key component of fast growth to weaning is the dam’s maternal performance. A bull with a high milk EBV should produce daughters which milk well.
Scrotal Size: indicates whether the bull will produce sons with above average or below average scrotal sizes.
Carcase Weight: ranks animals for carcase weight.
Eye Muscle Area: ranks animals for eye muscle area measured at the 12th rib on a 300kg carcase.
Rib Fat: ranks animals for rib fat depth at the 12th rib on a 300kg carcase.
Rump Fat: ranks animals for fat depth at the p8 site on the rump on a 300kg carcase.
Retail Beef Yield: ranks animals for the boned out retail beef yield of a 300kg carcase.
Intra Muscular Fat: ranks animals for the percentage of intramuscular fat at the 12th rib of a 300kg carcase.
Docility: is expressed as the increase or decrease in the percentage of progeny that will be scored as docile (score 1 or 2). Positive EBVs indicate a higher proportion of progeny that will be scored as docile and negative EBVs indicate a lower percentage of progeny being scored as docile.
COMPARING EBVS
The EBVs for Limousins cannot be compared with EBVs for animal of other breeds. They should be compared with the current average EBV for the Limousin breed shown below.
ACCURACIES
Accuracies are presented with each EBV and give an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal’s EBV as more information is analysed for that animal and its relatives.
