Building Regulations
The suspended walkways in the Museo del Domus Severiana are designed to fully comply with building regulations and standards. The walkways feature a height of 1.1 meters, which ensures safety and accessibility. Additionally, the walkways incorporate a timber balustrade on a metal frame, heavy-duty glass, and robust structural supports, all of which contribute to meeting the stringent requirements set forth in safety and construction codes.

MUSEO DEL DOMUS SEVERIANA FIRE SAFETY
In compliance with BS5839-1, the entire building is equipped with automatic heat and smoke detectors, accompanied by visual alarms and integrated sirens throughout the Museum. The horizontal escape distance to a protected stairwell or nal exit is less than 18 meters in one direction or less than 45 meters in two directions. All re escape doors lead to a safe external re refuge point away from the building. Escape routes are at least 1200mm wide and feature automated release doors to prevent re spread. Disabled refuges are located within each protected core without obstructing movement. Combustible materials within protected cores are minimized.
B2 & B3 Internal Fire Spread (Lining and Structure)
The reinforced concrete structure of the building is inherently re-resistant, with concrete partitions e ectively minimizing the risk of re spreading from one room to another. The placement of a person is always within regulation distance when the re alarm sounds and main spaces are around the core, such as the Gallery spaces in the re safety plans. The 250mm solid concrete cores are non-combustible and provide a minimum of 60-minute re protection.
Hand-held re extinguishers are strategically distributed throughout the building, with particular emphasis on access around the core and bridge where the re risk is higher.
B4 External Fire Spread regulations for a polycarbonate
To comply with B4 External Fire Spread regulations for a polycarbonate facade, the building uses ame-retardant polycarbonate panels and install non-combustible re barriers. Ensure the supporting structures are non-combustible and seal around openings. Maintain safe distances between buildings and use re-resistant roo ng. Regular inspections and maintenance are essential to uphold re safety.
B2 & B3 Internal Fire Spread (Lining and Structure)
The building’s perimeter is largely accessible to the re service, meeting Part B, section 16, table 19 requirements, which mandate at least 15% accessibility for buildings sized between 2000-8000m². Water valves are installed in stair cores, and hydrants are present across the site for emergency.

Smoke Detectors and Fire Alarms:
Smoke detectors and re alarm push buttons are present, which are crucial for early detection of re and prompt evacuation.
Evacuation Routes and Points:
Clearly marked evacuation paths and an outdoor gallery space designated as an evacuation point ensure organized and safe evacuation.
Concrete Core and Shaft Lobbies:
The use of concrete cores and shaft lobbies helps provide additional re protection, as these structures are typically re-resistant and help in containing the re.

Fire Extinguishers and Hydrant Reels:
Fire extinguishers and hydrant reels are strategically placed throughout the building.
Their locations ensure that they are easily accessible within the required distance, typically not more than 75 feet (23 meters) from any point in the building.
Fire Safety Staircases and Doors:
Fire safety staircases are indicated, which are essential for safe evacuation from upper oors.
Fire safety doors are also marked, which help to compartmentalize the building and prevent the spread of re and smoke.

MUSEO DEL DOMUS SEVERIANA FIRE SAFETY
The diagrams e ectively illustrate a well-planned re safety strategy, highlighting both the active evacuation paths and the passive re protection measures. This dual approach ensures that occupants can evacuate safely and that the building structure supports a controlled and safe evacuation process, complying with relevant building and re safety regulations.
Protected Routes: The use of protected re staircases (yellow) aligns with the requirement for buildings to have safe, re-protected routes for occupants to exit the building during a re.
Clear Egress Paths: The movement paths (red) ensure that the routes are clear and well-marked, which is a fundamental requirement of re safety regulations. These paths should lead to nal exits that open directly to a safe area outside the building.
Strategic Placement of Fire Safety Features: The diagrams show strategic placement of re safety features, such as hydrants and re alarms, along these routes and near staircases, ensuring they are accessible during an emergency.

These strategies demonstrate a thoughtful approach to sustainable design, leveraging natural elements and passive cooling techniques to optimize the building’s performance year-roun to dissipate heat, reducing the building’s overall temperature without relying on mechanical systems.
MUSEO DEL DOMUS SEVERIANA ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY
This building incorporates several environmental strategies to enhance energy e ciency and occupant comfort. Roof lights provide constant northern light, naturally illuminating the oor without adding heat, enhancing energy e ciency and comfort..
Heating and cooling
Shading with Trees:
The trees positioned on the right-hand side of the building provide natural shading during the summer. This reduces solar heat gain, lowering the need for arti cial cooling and enhancing comfort inside the building.
Cantilevered Underside Cooling:
The cantilevered underside in the middle of the building is exposed to air, allowing for natural cooling. As air passes through this space, it helps dissipate heat, reducing the building’s overall temperature without relying on mechanical systems.
