Special

A

The group awaiting a shuttle outside the James Buchanan Clubhouse is laughing and chatting about everything from the weather to what they plan to order to eat. The ladies are going out to lunch and shopping. For many of them, the gathering is about much more than food and browsing stores. It’s a part of learning to live joyfully … again. The loss of a spouse is never easy, whether it was a two-year relationship or 60-year union. For many, there is no such thing as a mourning period. The loss is felt every day, triggered by a holiday, an anniversary, a song or watching other couples eat a meal together. The Special Singles group, made up of widowed women or any woman who has experienced loss (one woman joined after losing her mother), meets monthly at the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown. It was formed 19 years

4

Group ago when resident Ginny Orchard, grieving from the recent loss of her husband, Edward, saw a woman crying while awaiting a shuttle to the campus’ health care center. The two briefly spoke, and the woman, Janet Barry, mentioned her husband was in the Masonic Health Care Center recovering from brain surgery to remove a tumor. Janet left on the shuttle, but Ginny remained concerned about her. About a month later, Ginny called Janet and learned her husband had passed. The two formed an immediate friendship.

“We never knew what it was like to be totally alone,” Ginny said. The two women invited other widows to join them and recruited Pastor Preston Van Deursen, director of spiritual care, to lead their group. Janet came up with the name Special Singles.

They had one requirement for him: Keep it light. “If it wasn’t going to be up, I told him I wasn’t staying,” Ginny said. “I don’t want to talk about the way down. It’s about fellowship and fun. You can’t just sit at home and never meet anyone.” Monthly, the group meets to discuss a topic, such as finding purpose and joy in living, the importance of forgiveness and other life advice. “We talk about what they look forward to,” Preston said. “I challenge them to ask, ‘What am I here for?’ I don’t cover how to deal with grief. I don’t want to take them back to sadness.” The group plans trips for lunch and shopping, to the Harley Davidson factory, to the Franklin Mint, for a cruise on the Pride of the Susquehanna or wherever their driver – sometimes Preston – takes them. “I’ve learned how strong they are,” he said. “They teach me all the things they can do that they didn’t know they could do. They’re so appreciative of me, and I of them. They make friendships and care for one another. They just want a good day.”

Janet passed away in 2011, and Ginny doesn’t attend as many meetings as she once did, but their friendship has led to a group which has had up to 40 participants. Resident Ginny Locker now helps coordinate the outings. “I’ve been a widow for 22 years,” she said. “Losing a spouse is like losing a part of yourself. You can’t comprehend this feeling unless you’ve been there. Everyone in this group understands. We don’t speak about it, but we all understand. This group helps brings back part of yourself. “I enjoy the companionship and being able to share stories. You tend to see people as they are now, and it can be hard to imagine what they’ve done in the past. It’s amazing to hear what some of these women have done.” The Special Singles meet the second Friday of each month, at 10:30 a.m., in the Keystone Room of the James Buchanan Clubhouse. While it’s only open for women, men are invited to the Men’s Support Group held the third Tuesday of each month, at 9 a.m., in the Keystone Room. “I encourage all widows to join,” Ginny Locker said. “It will make you feel better and keep you young. We have a lot of fun.”

Just

Rolling With It

Charles and Norma Leis met through a group of friends who roller skated together. Their connection to one another was the foundation of a union which has spanned seven decades and continues to touch the lives of all who meet them. Just as their love began to blossom, so did World War II. Charles was sent overseas with the U.S. Army, the first of many times they adjusted to what life brought them. During his two years in Italy, Norma and Charles wrote one another often. It took up to two weeks for each correspondence to arrive. Documenting their early relationship, the letters are now treasured memories for them. He returned home in 1945, and the two were soon engaged. Since it has been 70 years, the details of the proposal are a little vague. For the Leis, though, life is all about the big picture. They were married in a small ceremony in a rectory in May 1947. She skipped a wedding gown and wore a simple silk dress, corsage and flowered hat. The two enjoyed a reception in the Pennsylvania Barge Club. Plans for a honeymoon in Niagara Falls were postponed because Charles was on strike at work. Instead, they celebrated their union at a hotel in New York City. Charles worked for Western Electric, and they moved from Philadelphia to New Jersey. They raised a son and a daughter. They’re also the proud grandparents of two grandchildren, one who is attending medical school and the other who works for the State Department in Washington. Charlie went to work for the U.S. Government as a system analyst, and he stayed for 35 years. His job took him to Arizona, where the family lived for 15 years. When he retired, they bought a motor home and traveled the country. They visited 49 of the 50 states (they didn’t make it to North Dakota). “We really enjoyed that,” Norma said. “We made a lot of good friends through the Family Motor Coach Association. You have to adjust wherever you go

8

in life. Diversify. Accept change and roll with the punches.” They moved back to Pennsylvania to care for Norma’s mother. With traveling out of their system, they focused on giving back to their community. They both volunteered at Doylestown Hospital. She worked with patients to help them choose their meals, and he videotaped educational programs. When they moved to Masonic Village at Lafayette Hill eight years ago, they continued to volunteer; she in the gift shop ordering supplies, and he as the bartender at cocktail parties. They both help with the bazaar throughout the year. “We’ve always been involved in things,” Norma said. “We don’t like to sit back.” For their 50th wedding anniversary, they went to Alaska. For their 70th anniversary, their daughter threw a surprise party at Masonic Village with family and friends. For two naturally compatible people, it may seem like marriage came easy. In 70 years, though, they had their share of disagreements. “We never stayed angry overnight,” Norma said. “Even when we might like to. If someone makes a mistake, we don’t harp on it. Things happen. We’re human. It makes life easier to roll with the punches.” “You sit down and discuss the subject – whatever is upsetting you,” Charles said. “If we don’t agree, we forget. Marriage is about compatibility. It’s not 50/50. It’s 90/10 in favor of your partner.” A few things have changed since Charles and Norma met at the roller skating rink all those years ago, but their love is as strong as ever. “He always opens doors and lets me go in first,” she said. “We always say ‘please’ and ‘thank you,’ even to each other. We’ve just always respected each other.” The Leis are very happy living their senior years at Masonic Village and are thankful for the many friends and neighbors who surround them.

A 60-Year

Love

Walt and Margie Cook can never buy a matching living room suite. Walt, at over six feet tall, needs a recliner with an extra-long foot rest, and Margie, not quite five feet tall, needs an extra-short one. Regardless, they always make sure their recliners sit side by side. Walt and Margie celebrated 60 years of marriage on Nov. 23, 2017. Those 60 years have been filled with sidesplitting laughter, good stories and, most of all, unbreakable love.

They both remember the day they met like it was yesterday. Walt, fresh out of the Army, was a new history teacher at a junior high school in Coatsville, Pa. At the time, he didn’t know taking that job would change his life. During a teacher’s meeting on one cold February day, in walked Margie, a new college graduate, who recently accepted a teaching position at the school. Although it wasn’t love at first sight, the two agree it was as close as it gets. “It took some time for us to get to know each other, but not long,” Margie recalls with a smile. The couple went dancing for their first date, which turned out to be a challenge based on their height difference. After dancing the night away, Walt drove Margie home while she told a comical story about ruining a recipe. Unexpectedly, Walt turned to her and said, “Experience keeps a dear school, but fools will learn in no other,” a famous quote from Benjamin Franklin and a hint to his love for history. “My head whipped to the side and I looked right at him,” Margie laughs. “I thought, ‘now who is this guy here?’” That guy, she quickly learned, was the love of her life, and they married eight months later. “When Walt asked my father if he could marry me, my father laughed,” Margie said. “I couldn’t believe it. I think he was laughing because he was so happy. We were just lucky in love.” The two married over the Thanksgiving holiday in 1957, because they didn’t want to take unpaid time off from work. Even though the wedding went seamlessly, Walt and Margie have one favorite story from the event. It all started when Walt forgot his toothbrush on the most important day of his life. “I asked Margie if I could use hers, and she said ‘no,’” Walt laughs. “I thought, ‘we’re about to be married, and she won’t let me use her toothbrush?’”

10

Margie may be small in stature, but has always stood firm. “I share a lot of things, but not that,” she says. If Walt asked today, the answer would still be “no.” After a honeymoon weekend in New York City, the couple came home to start their life together. Four years later, they welcomed their first child, then two more. “Our kids take after my Margie,” Walt says. “Good looking, smart and always happy.” Margie beams at every compliment, even after all these years. “He has always taken good care of me, and I know he always will,” she says. “Walt’s easy to get along with. I think the secret is you have to make a good choice to start with, then hang in there.” Their cottage at Masonic Village at Elizabethtown is a collection of their 60 years together. Walls and tables are covered with photos of their children and grandchildren, souvenirs from their travels and awards the two have earned, with the love and support of one another. “It’s important to always do what you can for the other person,” Walt says, “and to respect each other. There also has to be substance behind attraction. Fall in love with someone you share a lot in common with.” When Walt and Margie talk about their shared passions including American history, their faith, traveling and, of course, their family, they both light up. At Masonic Village, Walt belongs to the woodshop and the men’s chorus, and Margie belongs to the Sell Chapel Women’s Choir. Together, they give presentations to fellow residents on past presidents and first ladies and take trips to concerts, shows and Pennsylvania attractions. They’ve also enjoyed traveling across the globe. “My big goal was to take Margie to Paris,” Walt said. A man of his word (and of romance), upon retirement, Walt took Margie to Paris, and then to Egypt, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Ireland and a number of other destinations. On every trip, he makes sure to pack a toothbrush, because, otherwise, he knows he would be out of luck. After enduring all life’s twists and turns, Walt and Margie’s favorite place to be is still next to each other, preferably in their unmatched recliners.

Love and Life Fortunate in

Carol and Tom Stephenson didn’t always have much, but for more than 72 years, they’ve shared a love that’s immeasurable. They met on a blind date. Carol was on a break after completing her freshman year of college. She had a friend in the service and asked him to bring a friend along on a night out. The friend was Tom, and that was the first of many dates. When they met, the country was in the midst of World War II. Despite the tensions shrouding the nation (or perhaps because of it), their love grew. Tom was serving in the U.S. Air Corps, and they got together during his leaves. “I was considering enlisting myself,” Carol said. “I was going to join the WAVES [Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service] until Tom asked me to marry him. “I forgot all about joining WAVES, and we went shopping for rings!” Two weeks after her graduation from Hood College, they were married on June 17, 1945. It was a small affair, as many of Tom’s friends were still serving in the military. In another three months, the war would officially end with the surrender of Japan. They were briefly settled in Bangor, Maine, when the Air Corps transferred Tom, by air, to Spokane, Washington. Carol drove to her home in Pennsylvania, and just weeks later, drove by herself to Spokane. She thought the Western Plains would never end, but then she encountered the mountains! In early 1946, Tom was discharged from the service and

12

started four years of graduate school – one year at Lehigh University and three at the University of Wisconsin – studying geology. While in Wisconsin, they lived in wartime housing, which consisted of two large furnished rooms and community baths shared by 12 apartments. During this time, their son, Bob, was born in the St. Mary’s Ringling Brothers Hospital in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Following a year of teaching, Tom accepted a job as a geologist at the Minnesota Ore Division of Jones and Laughlin (J&L) Steel Company in Virginia, Minnesota, which would be their home for 15 years. Their son, Jack, was born in 1952. “Having lived so far from our parents, we made all the decisions as the boys grew up, and we think we did a very good job,” Carol said. “We’re proud of them!” In 1966, Tom was transferred to the corporate offices of J&L in Pittsburgh. He retired from the company in 1980 and turned to consulting for about eight years. His largest client, CVRD, a major producer of iron ore, took Carol and Tom on a tour of CVRD’s Brazilian mines and ports, including a new development at the headwaters of the Amazon. “It was an impressive trip,” Tom said. “All of this, plus two weekends on the beach in Rio!” In 2003, the Stephensons were among the first residents to move into the new retirement living apartments at the Masonic Village at Sewickley. They had other family who lived in continuing care retirement communities, and they liked the fact that Masonic Village was new and they had their pick of accommodations – their choice was one with a scenic view.

“Our son said it was like a country club,” Carol said. “It seemed to fit the bill. The grounds are superior, and there’s more to do than you have time for. This was one of the better decisions we made in our life.” While some people look forward to relaxing in retirement, Carol and Tom prefer to stay busy. They spend their time visiting the wellness center at least three days a week, serve on the committee for employee appreciation and have volunteered at World Vision for 10 years. Carol also volunteers in the general store, and Tom helps show the Saturday night movies.

Carol and Tom are looking forward to their 73rd anniversary on June 17, 2018. Their son, Bob, and his wife will be on hand from Arizona, as well as the remainder of four generations, including Jack and his wife, two grandchildren and spouses and three great-grandchildren, all of whom live within 15 miles of Masonic Village. “We feel fortunate we have so much of our family so near, but especially because we all enjoy being together,” Carol said.

To

Love

Again She hadn’t thought of remarrying – even after she met Bob. “He proposed very casually. We were walking, and he said, ‘Would you marry me, Pat?’ I was rather surprised,” she said. Bob played it off like he was just curious, and several weeks went by without further discussion of the matter. When it came up again, she said yes. That was two years ago. It was an “easy” adjustment for the couple, and concerning finances and free time, better than the first.

Talking with Bob and Pat Bowman, it seems like they’ve been married for decades because of how comfortable and happy they are with each other. In reality, their marriage hasn’t even reached half of the 10-year-mark. The couple’s friendship – the precursor to their romance – began in an ordinary moment, when they were both walking to dinner and decided to sit together. They lived in the same building. Each enjoyed taking walks and adventures to new places. However, they shared something deeper, too: the experience of being caregivers for their spouses, who had passed away within months of each other. Bob’s wife, Marianne, suffered a traumatic brain injury in 1993, paralyzing her for the last 20 years of their 50-year marriage. Pat’s husband’s dementia brought her to Masonic Village after his condition escalated beyond what she could manage by herself. “I needed help, and I got it here,” she said. “He knew me until 10 days before he passed.”

14

“During our first marriages, in our 20s, we were like most others – overcommitted and under-resourced. Now, we have much less noise in our lives!” Bob said. The Bowmans like to travel – a hobby which requires both money and time. Since the start of their marriage, they have been to Scotland, France (to visit the D-Day beaches of Normandy), Israel, England and Florida. “I notice the beautiful things around us, and, because of our partnership, I appreciate them more than I did before,” Bob said. “Beauty is more beautiful than it used to be.” The Bowmans are not the first couple to find their second spouses at Masonic Village, and they will not be the last. “I think by being here – with other residents in similar stages of life – a new life with someone else is always possible,” Kelly Eakin, director of sales and marketing, said. Pat, who speaks from experience, seconds her opinion. “This is a good place to find someone. The people around here are good people. It’s a nice place to be,” she said.

&

Love Laughter In 2007, Bill Huesser, a contractor, was working on the kitchen of a woman whose husband had just passed away. He knew it must have been hard for her after spending a lifetime with her husband and raising a family together. He never imagined six months later, he’d lose his wife. Bill also never imagined, a year later, he’d be going on a date with the woman, Gloria, whose kitchen he worked on in 2007. He ran into her at the grocery store, and the two chatted for awhile and decided to meet for dinner. One of the details Bills vividly remembers from the encounter was that she was buying a single pork chop. “I asked her, ‘Are you having pork chops for dinner?’” Bill recalls. “She said, ‘Yes, it will be good for two meals,’ and I immediately thought, I’d better eat before I come over. “She sure can talk. We talked for three hours the first night.” With a mutual understanding of what it is like to lose someone you love, they bonded and spent the next eight years getting to know each other even better. Her chattiness and his sense of humor meshed so well, they moved into an apartment together at the Masonic Village at Dallas. In August 2016, Bill and Gloria were married. They did it their way – in Las Vegas – with Bill’s son, daughter-in-law and grandson as witnesses. They also held a church ceremony for family back home in Dallas, Pa., where his daughter, Teri, and her fiancé, Paul, were witnesses.

16

“I gave Gloria a kiss, and the priest said, ‘I never saw a kiss that long,’” Bill said with pride. The two, who spend winters in Florida, have kept their vow to never go to bed angry. “We have a very good life together,” Bill said. “I understand her, she understands me. She’s tried to straighten me out, but loves me anyway. We’re living happily ever after.” Bill credits part of this bliss to their age. “Gloria is hard of hearing,” Bill said. “If she’s says, ‘I didn’t hear you,’ I typically say ‘never mind.’ We don’t have time to argue – we’re 81 and 83 years old. We don’t have any problems, or at least we don’t remember them if we do.” The Huessers are enjoying life at Masonic Village. “Everyone is very helpful and friendly, from the maintenance staff to the office staff,” Bill said. “We’re very happy and secure here.” Bill enjoys golfing. While Gloria does not, she will ride in the cart with him once in a while. Together, they go to casinos, shows and tractor races. They have a cruise planned for December, which includes seven stops at Caribbean Islands. As for their second wedding anniversary, “We’re going somewhere,” Bill said. “I don’t where yet, but somewhere nice.” One thing he does know is why he admires Gloria.

“I love her kindness, love and understanding,” he said. “We’re going to spend the rest of our lives together. We can’t ask for anything more.”

Giving Catalog Has Special Meaning for a Couple

Generous

As the 2017 holiday season approached, Mike and Alice Hamilton decided they had reached a point in their lives where they had everything they wanted and needed. As retired school teachers, Mike and Alice’s willingness to step outside of themselves and into the lives of those in need made them great contributors to the world of education. They have continued their acts of kindness today by giving to causes close to their heart. “We had a discussion about having everything we need, and then later that day, the Masonic Villages Giving Catalog appeared in our mailbox,” Alice recalls. “It caught our eye right away. The woman on the cover of the catalog reminded us so much of our mothers.”

Mike and Alice lost both sets of their parents within the last few years and deeply connected with nearly all of the 27 items listed in the Masonic Villages Giving Catalog, which includes things residents use and enjoy each day.

“When our parents were alive, we were grateful for the places that gave them good quality care, because no one can do it alone,” Mike said. “We recognize that Masonic Village is one of those special places.” Born and raised in Hershey, Pa., Mike has always been familiar with Masonic Village’s mission to care for aging adults when their health declines or funds run out, particularly from the service projects he completed on the Elizabethtown campus as a young Boy Scout. Instead of purchasing Christmas gifts for each other, the Hamiltons decided to purchase a variety of items through

18

the Masonic Villages Giving Catalog to benefit residents, including cardigan sweaters (the sweater pictured was the same style their mothers wore, so they knew they wanted to purchase two!), large print books, blankets for veterans, instruments for music therapy and more. “We spent a long time with the catalog, reading each description and connecting with each photo,” Alice said. “We just wanted to choose the perfect items. It was fun and fulfilling for us.” Perhaps the most meaningful item the Hamiltons purchased through the catalog was an iPod for music therapy. “My mother suffered from dementia, so when we read about how Masonic Village uses the iPods to soothe those with memory loss by playing them customized playlists, our hearts were happy,” Alice said. By trade, Alice’s mother was a talented pianist who performed in countless concert halls across the country, and Alice has many fond memories of her mother’s performances. Unfortunately, as her mother began to lose her memory, she also lost her ability to play.

“It’s difficult to see a loved one not remember who you are,” Alice recalls. “I think that was the worst part about it all.”

Fortunately, during her illness, music was still something special in Alice’s mother’s life. “Even though she could no longer play, music still brought her to life. Before she passed away, we would play music for her, and she would just light up,” Alice said. During their visits, Mike and Alice would even bring old recordings of Alice’s mother’s own concerts. When she listened, her smile would light up the room, and she could be seen conducting along. “Music was something in her life that brought her great joy, and it did until the very end,” Alice recalls. “Through our gifts, we want to allow the residents to continue the passions they’ve always had, even when their lives are changing,” Mike says. When viewing the catalog, the couple also thought of Mike’s father, an avid gardener and farmer, and Alice’s father, a jazz musician, and decided to purchase sets of gardening tools and music therapy instruments for residents. In memory of both their fathers, who served in World War II, Alice and Mike also provided hand-made blankets for veterans on Masonic Village Hospice. These gifts and more were all chosen from the catalog with special memories in mind.

On Christmas Eve, the Hamiltons put their Giving Catalog under the tree. They discovered giving gifts to others was the perfect gift for one another. If you would like your own copy of the Masonic Villages Giving Catalog, complete and return the enclosed envelope, call 1-800-599-6454 or email giving@masonicvillages.org. You can also view and order items online at MVGivingCatalog.org.
