Located in the Star Points Building, the Barley Wellness Center offers state-of-the-art equipment, fitness classes and an indoor pool and spa. Trained staff will help you develop a personalized fitness program. Open 24 hours, with staff available Mon. - Fri., 6 a.m. - 4 p.m. Pool hours: Mon. - Fri., 8 - 11 a.m.

Fit For Life focuses on balance, strength and flexibility to help strengthen and stabilize you for a better quality of life.

Our instructor, Nikki, will guide you through gentle stretches to improve flexibility and balance and increase range of motion, making it easier to perform everyday tasks.

Improve your overall health with a combination of aerobic conditioning, resistance training and balance exercises while enjoying the beautiful pool.

Our wellness staff will warm you up and cool you down with various exercises before and after a short walk. Join neighbors and friends for good music and conversation, all while contributing to a healthy, active lifestyle.

Senior Yoga

Our instructor, Claudia, will guide you through a gentle half-hour yoga session of seated and standing poses focused on strength, relaxation, balance and flexibility.

Golden Aerobics

Designed to work your entire body, this class will benefit individuals who are looking for an active cardiovascular workout with intervals of strength, flexibility and rangeof-motion exercises.

Book Discussion Group Monday, Aug. 16 1 p.m. Activity Room 2 In August, the group will not read or discuss a book, but instead will be voting on the next five selections. Regular and active members are asked to submit suggestions to Mary Ann Williams no later than Aug. 2.

The books selected will be for the months of November, January, February, March and April. The group always looks forward to the selections made and then chooses the months in which they will be read. This is a wonderful group with new people joining often. Anyone who enjoys good books, great fun and lots of laughter is welcome any time.

Eleanor Howe presents this series of programs that feature a variety of composers, styles, moods, genres and instruments with an introduction to each piece. We celebrate holidays and seasons with appropriate music. The programs are held throughout the year on the third Friday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Assembly Room, with doors opening at 6:45 p.m. Feel free to bring friends and an optional beverage. The Barley Wellness Center will be hosting a presentation, “Any Age is the Right Age to Exercise.” This presentation will explain why all individuals should exercise and will take a close look at the benefits of exercise, particularly for the senior population. Whether your goal is to maintain your health, improve your health, prevent your health from declining, learn why exercise is important!

Lifelong Learning Exploring the Mayan World Mondays at 4 p.m. in the Assembly Room Aug. 2

Introduction and exploring Merida – Our Mayan adventure starts in the capital of Yucatan, where we learn about the production of sisal, and see the mega mansions of the colonial rich. Chichen Itza – We start at the yellow city named after the Mayan Sun God, part of which was transformed into a convent to teach Christianity to the local population, and end at Chichen ltza for a tour of the ruins, the ball court and cool off in a cenote (sink hole).

Ek’Balam – At Valladolid, we visit a traditional agave distillery and an all-female troupe of horseback riders. Then it’s off to what had been the capital of the Maya, with its fantastic stucco façades and re-enactors performing music and the ancient ball game. Tihosuco – We learn how to write a name in Mayan hieroglyphics, how talk like a howler monkey and learn about the oppressed people fighting for their independence.

Aug. 16

Mayapan became the new capital around 1250. We will learn about the destruction of the Mayan codices by the Roman Catholic Church and traditional foods and crafts. Uxmal demonstrates Mayan urban planning. We will see handprints dating back 10,000 years and learn how to make hot chocolate the Mayan way.

Aug. 23

Celestun is home to a wetland reserve famous for the thousands of flamingos that flock there. We will also learn about the production of Panamanian hats and the Puuc architectural style. Labana is crowned by three buildings. We will decode the cultural messages in these famous works.
