Located in the Star Points Building, the Barley Wellness Center offers state-of-the-art equipment, fitness classes and an indoor pool and spa. Trained staff will help you develop a personalized fitness program.

Pine Creek Community Band Returns!

Time: 7 p.m.

Approximately 60 individuals from various age groups and professions – including band directors, professional musicians, engineers, lawyers and accountants – have banded together to play music and have fun as the Pine Creek Community Band.

Since 1990, they have played summer and holiday concerts; at local venues, including Soldiers & Sailors Hall, Kennywood and the Cumberland Woods Legacy Theater; various community days celebrations; and more. The band will play a variety of music, from Gustav Holst’s “First Suite in E Flat” to the “Incredibles” theme. They will have you clapping along to some rousing pieces!

A European Tapestry

Have you seen the new pictures in the display case on the lower level of the Clubhouse? Well, they are just a sample of the photographs that Pam Braden shot on her recent trip to Europe. She will share her photos and stories - from tulips time in Amsterdam to iconic medieval cities of Bruges and Ghent to General George Patton’s grave in Bastogne. She will end her presentation with photos of the Notre Dame cathedral after the horrific fire and a sparkling Eiffel Tower. Don’t miss this cross-cultural event!

Book Discussion Group

June’s book is “An Invisible Thread” by Laura Schroff and Alex Tresniowski - the true story of an 11-yearold panhandler, a busy sales executive and an unlikely meeting with destiny. He asked her for spare change, she kept walking … and then something stopped her in her tracks, and she went back. And she continued to go back, again and again. They met up almost weekly for years and built an unexpected, lifechanging friendship that as of today, has spanned almost two decades. Community 27 Band South

Currently conducted by James Bennett and Max Gonano, Community Band South was founded in 1987 as an opportunity for former high school and college band members to keep playing their instruments. They perform approximately 16 concerts a year at churches, festivals, community centers, senior citizen centers, community events and joint ventures with local high school and college bands.

Dr. Coppola will discuss why Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is “More Common Than You Think!”

In this new program, concert pianist Vladimir Svoysky will introduce you to five preludes and one “Moment Musicaux” (musical moment). He will also perform five impromptus by Schubert - unique among composers because he can pull the most complex emotions out of the simplest, most irresistible melodies.

Afternoon Movie: In the Name of the Father (1993)

Nominated for seven Oscars in 1993, this biopic features Gerry Conlon (Daniel Day-Lewis), who was wrongfully sentenced to life in prison for an IRA terrorist attack that killed four people. As if a forced confession wasn’t enough injustice, the police work to implicate Conlon’s father (Pete Postlethwaite) in the same crime. Emma Thompson plays the lawyer who worked for years to uncover the truth. Rated R; 132 minutes.

For over 30 years, Fred Rogers, an unassuming minister, puppeteer, writer and producer, was beamed daily into homes across America. In his beloved television program, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” Fred and his cast of puppets and friends spoke directly to young children about some of life’s weightiest issues, in a simple, direct fashion.

Todd DePastino concludes his series on the Great Depression with a talk on the towering figure of the era: FDR. Most know Franklin Roosevelt as the president who led the country through Depression and World War II, but few know about his unusual upbringing and the odd personality that drove him, both before and after he lost the use of his legs in 1921. Have you ever noticed or wondered about the backgammon, checkers, Chinese checkers and Parcheesi boards framed on the wall of the Card Room?

Well, they aren’t just artwork – they are games that you can remove from the wall and play! The markers and marbles are in cloth bags on the windowsill. Bring back your childhood by playing these games. Or, better yet, take them down and teach your grandchildren and great- grandchildren what you played when you were young.

The story of America’s founding – great men who debated, argued, persuaded and negotiated their way to the U.S. Constitution – is as dramatic and instructive as any in the nation’s history. And there is no better way to tell the story of the Founding Fathers than by pairing an eminent U.S. historian with the very institution that is most synonymous with American history, the Smithsonian.

These men – Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Hamilton and many others – are larger than life in our collective memory, having near-mythical status. Similarly, the U.S. Constitution is the oldest continuallyoperating instrument of government anywhere in the world, serving as the backbone to the world’s most

powerful democracy. Yet, few among us realize just how turbulent, contentious, even suspenseful the process was to draft and ratify it. That’s why The Great Courses and Smithsonian have joined forces to tell how this crucial drama in Western history unfolded.
