MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR VIRGINIA MIGRALA Here at the children’s home, it’s easy to get caught up in the present, in what we’re doing at the moment: transporting kids to music lessons and sports practices, making sure dinner is on the table by 5 and helping with homework.

Sometimes, it’s good to focus on the why. Why do these seemingly small tasks matter?

They matter because they create a safe, stable environment for kids to grow. Since I began working at the children’s home 37 years ago, I’ve been able to witness amazing interactions. Interactions between house parents and children, between friends and between students and

tutors. I’ve seen children develop their skills, learn from one another and find kindness and love in their hearts.

I’ve seen children grow up and obtain the career they’ve wanted since they began school at 6 years old. It’s quite a miraculous thing to experience.

Our mission to help children realize their potential has been forever supported by those who choose to give to a cause larger than themselves. From someone who has witnessed hundreds of success stories, let me say first-hand, every thought and effort counts.

Girls of the Masonic Children’s Home, 1917

A LOOK BACK IN TIME A few years after the children’s home was founded, the Masonic Village (then known as the Masonic Homes) established a library in each of the children’s buildings so the youth could expand their knowledge and enjoy reading as a pasttime. In addition to reading, the boys participated in Boy Scouts, and the girls learned to cook, bake and sew. Most of the children also took up music. By 1917, some of the children gained enough musical talent to perform at various events. That same year, the first playground was installed

and provided endless entertainment as the children enjoyed slides, seesaws, a trapeze, swings, a May pole and tennis courts. The perfect balance between work and play was found.

According to the Committee on Masonic Homes, all of these activities were aimed at helping the children “to develop rugged physical health, with the highest grade of moral and mental conscience, so that they may be thoroughly fitted for citizenship in the world’s work.”

With such differing personalities, who would have thought Alexis, Aba, Cyrose and Shinely would become the best of friends?

Each young lady brings her smile, individual sense of humor and style to the friendship, making them, together, a force to be reckoned with.

You could say Alexis and Cyrose are the most outspoken, often responsible for bringing out the fits of laughter amongst the group.

That laughter rings throughout the Umbaugh cottage, especially when the girls are having one of their famous sleepovers.

Aba is classified as the “mom”

of the troop, even though she is the second youngest member.

Based on her kind-hearted nature, when she’s not lending a listening ear, she’s providing invaluable advice to her “sisters.”

Shinely brings the support.

Her open mind makes her considerate of her friends’ ideas.

“No matter what kind of crazy stories we share, we don’t judge each other,” Shinely said.

“And we tell a lot of stories,” Alexis chimed in.

Alexis, Aba and Shinely grew up together in Balliet cottage, and Cyrose joined in the friendship when she moved to the children’s

home three years ago.

If they’re not dancing around, speaking their own invented language, watching movies or talking about fashion, they’re telling stories about their day, often struggling not to interrupt each other with giggles.

“We’re just four different people in the world,” Cyrose said, “but we’re close and no one can come between us.”

Their time at the children’s home has allowed Alexis, Aba, Cyrose and Shinely (l-r above) to form a strong friendship, and sometimes, that’s all anybody needs.

guitar sports As far as sixth grader Odezhon, known as “O.D.” by his friends at the children’s home, is concerned, there are no greater teams in sports than the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cleveland Cavaliers. O.D. considers his two favorite sports, football and basketball, great forms of exercise and ways to build his confidence. Who knows, maybe one day, “O.D.” will be stitched on the back of a jersey.

Enter Autumn’s room, and you’ll find every available wall space covered in her work. Each painting, drawing, sculpture and decorated object has an intended story behind its design, but what’s truly special is that those stories are constantly changing. “When people visit, they make up their own stories about what’s happening in my artwork,” Autumn said. “I let them stick with those stories because that is what’s so great about my art. It can mean anything you want it to mean.”

Autumn often turns her room into a personal studio, covering her carpet in newspaper, paints, yarn, feathers and broken pencils - it’s where everything just seems to come together. “Art is my passion, my imagination and my way of seeing the world from a different angle,” Autumn said. “It has helped me through tough times.”

To Kaiden, there’s no better feeling in the world than strumming his guitar. Whether it be electric or acoustic, he loves it all. “Playing my guitar helps me show off my personality,” Kaiden said. To accompany his sweet music, Kaiden also enjoys showing off his style. Putting on his prized hats, sunglasses and jackets are his favorite ways to show he’s got the groove.

grow th MEET JAYSEAN Most wouldn’t know by looking at him, but Jaysean possesses a talent many others do not.

This young and vibrant third grader masters mathematics. Addition, subtraction, division, long division, multiplication - he loves it all, and tied with recess, math is considered his favorite subject. In fact, he enjoys anything that requires methodological thinking.

Maybe that’s why he and his friends, Anthony and Techeal, are so good at building Legos.

One day, Jaysean would love to visit Disney World because he’s always been interested in roller coasters and how they work. Not to mention, he enjoys the fear, fun and adrenaline that goes along with riding them.

At the children’s home, Jaysean’s favorite thing to do is eat dinner. He enjoys spending that time with his friends and house parents, whom he says can make some mean tacos.

ON THE ROAD TO SUCCESS Mike graduated from Elizabethtown

Area High School and the children’s home program in 2011. After high school, Mike began attending Drexel University, and will complete his bachelor’s degree in computer engineering in May. With his hard work and dedication, Mike has secured a job with Lockheed Martin, a global security and aerospace company with a location in Philadelphia. Mike is also a proud member of Treichler Lodge No. 682, Elizabethtown. Look for more details on his story in a future issue of Home’s Grown Kids.

LOOKING UP TO MS. MORROW She has three children of her own, but has always found room in her heart for more.

That is why Paula Morrow became a social worker.

A strong believer in the importance of childhood, Paula loves working with children and helping them succeed in their pursuits and have meaningful relationships with their families.

“I love working with the children because they are so open and honest,” Paula said.

Paula spends her days advocating for the children, making sure they have everything they need.

Stemming from the raising of her own children, Paula understands what it takes: patience, kindness, perseverance and open-mindedness.

Sometimes, social work is not for the faint-hearted, but she couldn’t picture herself doing anything else.

Members of Hershey Medical Center’s chapter of the Student Nurses’ Association of Pennsylvania held a Halloween party on Oct. 18 for the children. With pumpkin painting, bobbing for apples and treats, it certainly was a spooktacular Halloween!

thank you GIVING BACK Based on his love for children, Anthony was especially excited to welcome a new one into his family. In 2002, he was expecting his first granddaughter. Unfortunately, that excitement soon combined with fear.

Katy was born almost four months early, weighing 1 pound, 12 ounces. She needed immediate medical attention, remained in the hospital for six months and had to undergo a tracheostomy, which she was required to keep intact until age 3.

“It was scary,” Anthony said. “She had dolls bigger than her.”

Katy’s care and the support the family received was funded in part by the March of Dimes. Now 13, the baby born smaller than a doll is a typical teenage girl who enjoys competitive dance.

“I saw first-hand through the March of Dimes what people who give money can do, so I pay it forward.”

Anthony Gatt has always had a soft spot in his heart for helping children. As a former coach of grade school track and field and pee wee football, you could say Anthony has cheered kids on his whole life. Since he has four children of his own, he knows the importance of giving them the proper encouragement to learn and thrive.

Pre-retirement, Anthony worked as the Chief Financial Officer for a children’s services center that focused on early childhood development, offering physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy to its students. He laughs at remembering all the times he played Santa at the center’s holiday parties.

Anthony hasn’t yet been to the children’s home to see the impact of his donations, but plans to visit soon. As a member of West Chester Lodge No. 322 and the Masonic Charities Loyalty Club (see the back page of this issue for details on becoming a member), Anthony hopes his gift will help the children as well as encourage them to one day give back.

“Kids are not like adults. They don’t always understand,” Anthony said. “They are the ones who need help the most – the ones who had their futures decided for them.”

Though on some level, his reason for giving is simple.

“You open up the magazine and see the smiles on these kids’ faces and read their stories. How can you not give?”
