Home’s Grown Kids A Message from Our Director: Virginia K. Migrala

Mission Statement

Here we are, at the end of winter. Time sure does fly! We were grateful this season, as many people chose to spend the holidays with us, helping to pack them full of activities, celebrations and musical performances that the kids enjoyed.

Our caring communities and services assist individuals, families and children in realizing their potential and enjoying the highest possible quality of life through the traditions of Freemasonry.

As much fun as we had, there were some big life decisions made by our three graduating seniors this season as they chose colleges. Tianne has her decision narrowed down to Kutztown University or Central Penn College, Jamir has selected Shippensburg University, and Jesse has chosen to attend Penn State Harrisburg.

These resolutions reminded them just how quickly graduation is approaching.

As we brought in the New Year, we looked back on 2014 and remembered what a wonderful year we had together. Every experience and opportunity for growth the children had in 2014, as well as in the years before, is only possible because of the generous donations of many. For that, we feel fortunate.

G R O W T H A Spooktacular Halloween Thanks to the Student Nurses Association of Pennsylvania (SNAP) from Penn State Hershey Medical Center, the kids were able to attend their very own Halloween party on Oct. 24. The party included Halloween-themed games (see Sarah, Quinton and Nestor in top photo), a campfire (with s’mores of course) and other yummy treats.

The kids then suited up in costume on Friday, Oct. 31, for trick-or-treat.

Costumes were creative this year, including three youth dressed as superheroes and two dressed as angels. Other costumes included a farmer, fire fighter, fairy, black cat, a skeleton and even a Fred Flintstone!

Holiday Train Set-Up

Staff had the idea of setting up a train display in the Longdon Cottage for the boys to enjoy during the holidays. When the members of the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club got word, they were happy to help. The club members graciously offered to help the boys set up a train track at the end of November.

“The boys had fun setting up the train, and they enjoyed the display throughout the season,” Virginia Migrala, director of children’s services, said.

Jerusalem Lodge Christmas Party Brethren and guests from Jerusalem Lodge No. 506, Philadelphia, hosted a Christmas party for the youth and residents of Bleiler Caring Cottage on Dec. 7. While everyone joined in the holiday song “Here Comes Santa Claus,” the jolly ol’ elf himself entered the room! Santa handed out stockings filled with candy and a $50 gift card to the kids. The lodge also provided cookies and punch during the festive event.

Annual Cottage Cook-Off The kids put on their aprons, got out their kitchen utensils and prepared for an ultimate food competition on Nov. 16, as the cottages battled for the winning title during the 6th annual cottage cook-off. The kids were challenged to use bread dough mix, Nutella (a chocolate hazelnut spread), a chocolate bar, white rice and almonds to create a delicious sweet treat.

All cooking aside, the real lessons learned by the kids involved manners, life skills and how to work as a team.

Although their dessert was delicious and creative, what really impressed the judges was their teamwork.

With the given ingredients, Balliet Cottage constructed and served delicious “rice custard à la mode.” The girls made bread bowls with the mix and homemade rice pudding. After the pudding was chilled, the girls served it in bread bowls, topped with Nutella, chocolate drizzles and crushed almonds. The girls worked as a team as Felicia and Cyrose made the rice pudding, and Jada, Amirah and Cassie constructed the bread bowls. All of the girls decorated the final product, and of course, cleaned up.

Based on following the instructions, creativity, the complexity of their chosen recipe, overall taste and their teamwork skills, the winning title went to the Balliet Cottage girls, who were awarded chef hats and a $100 cottage activity.

Second place, for a $50 cottage activity, was awarded to Weller Cottage and their chocolate bread recipe, which was inspired by the French pastry, “Pain au chocolat.”

The boys also displayed their unique style when it came to writing their recipe’s description, which read: “Hazelnut infused rice pudding, topped with delectable, crunched almonds, and a kiss of shaved chocolate. All atop of moist, soft baked bread drizzled with sweet local chocolate.”

With these tasty recipes, perhaps the real winners were the staff judges who got to taste all of the dishes!

Everyday Hero As part of its Everyday Heroes program, Bear Creek Elementary School recognizes students who demonstrate positive characteristics, including our own Thomas!

Thomas was inducted in February for demonstrating strong perseverance, which Bear Creek defined as, “having a commitment to get the job done no matter what it takes.”

Staff Spotlight: Shirley Burns Shirley Burns has always enjoyed working with children. After teaching childhood education in the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta and completing educational courses at Penn State, Shirley started working at the Masonic Village Child Care Center. From there, Shirley took a position as a child care worker at the children’s home, and has been there for 22 years.

“Working with children keeps you young and thinking young, which is great,” Shirley said. “I enjoy the kids’ energy and their zest for life.”

Some of her fondest memories with the kids come from trips, including the children’s home’s ventures to Ocean City, Disney Land, Disney World and camping at Sugar Run. As Shirley retires this month, she is planning to use her free time to continue gardening, reading and taking exercise classes at the Patton Pool. Shirley is also looking forward to traveling to Dallas, Texas, to spend some time with her three grandchildren.

Although Shirley will be leaving the children’s home, she will always have the kids in mind, and she hopes they will succeed in all of their endeavors and enjoy fulfilling lives.

“After 22 years, I will miss coming to work with the children who have kept my life extremely interesting,” Shirley said.

Music to the Ears “Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm to life and to everything.” -Plato Amirah, Clara and Cyrose (pictured left, top to bottom) displayed their musical talents and hard work on the piano at a music recital at Zug Hall at Elizabethtown College on Dec. 6.

After the recital, the girls and their guests enjoyed refreshments.

Later in the day, the Four Seasons singers and needlers gave all the youth a warm and entertaining visit. The group, from Traditions of America in Mount Joy, knit a scarf for each child and put together a musical program for them to enjoy.

To continue the busy holiday season, the Longdon Cottage boys visited Sight and Sound Theatre in Lancaster on Dec. 9 to see Moses.

On Dec. 12, siblings Noelia and Nestor (pictured below) played starring roles as Mary and Joseph at the Masonic Village Men’s Chorus concert at Masonic Village at Elizabethtown.

K I D S Youth Spotlight: Autumn & Jasmine Although 16-year-old Autumn and 15-year-old Jasmine are sisters with mostly different interests, the two share a love for creativity and playing video games.

Autumn, an avid student of special effects and modeling, is a huge fan of American film producer and artist Tim Burton, who is well-known for his quirky and imaginative fantasy films. Autumn is often inspired by Burton’s style when she constructs her own artwork.

Enrolled in many art classes at Elizabethtown Area High School, Autumn recently created artwork that took a spin on the traditional version of a top-hat (see bottom photo).

New Kid on the Block

Adreanna, Age 7 Balliet Cottage

Adreanna moved to the children’s home from Folcroft on Jan. 19.

She loves to play with dolls, dance and practice gymnastics and cheerleading. Her favorite holidays are Valentine’s Day and Christmas.

In school, Adreanna prefers math.

Her favorite foods are pizza, French fries and, believe it or not, broccoli!

Jasmine on the other hand, finds creativity in following Venus Palermo, an online star who shares her knowledge on Japanese culture and fashion.

Jasmine also likes practicing martial arts and studying Anime, a Japanese animation production style that features hand-drawn or computer-generated graphics. Her interest in Anime inspired the self-portrait she painted last year.

Autumn and Jasmine both enjoy playing video games that involve strategy and problem solving, and on Fridays and Saturdays, the girls walk over to the Weller Cottage and join the boys in video game tournaments.

As for the future, both girls have big dreams and plan to continue their passions. Autumn would like to use

her artistic talents to pursue a career in Hollywood as a special effect makeup artist, specifically for horror movies. Jasmine would like to travel to Japan, learn the language and attend school there to become a detective.

But for now, as residents of the Umbaugh Cottage, both girls are happy to be at the children’s home and happy to have each other.

“We’ve been through a lot together, and living here since 2010 has given us opportunities we wouldn’t have had,” Jasmine said.

T H A N K S Donor Spotlight: New Tools for Modern Students With the privilege of computer access comes responsibility.

Each child and their guardian sign an Internet Contract prior to computer use, and Masonic Children’s Home staff have permission to check the history of each computer on a regular basis. No one may access inappropriate materials or sites, and use of social networks is allowed as long as private and confidential information is not shared. Illegal or unethical use of the Internet or computer results in the loss of computer privileges.

For today’s students, access to a computer and the Internet is as essential as paper and a pencil. Teachers often post assignments and grades on websites, and students are expected to conduct research and upload their work online.

Thanks to the generosity of a few donors who wish to remain anonymous, each child at the Masonic Children’s Home received his or her own personal laptop to use for school work and to communicate with friends and family.

For several years, youth have had access to computers in the Resource Center, where tutors help them with assignments and studying, as well as one in each of the five cottages. As schoolwork has become more centered on computer usage, sharing among up to eight kids per cottage has become an increasing challenge. With a personal laptop, each child can save his or her homework and school projects in one place and access it at any time. Many of the youth also use email and social media to keep in contact with family and friends.

“Ensuring each child has access to a computer and the Internet has become a necessity to make sure they keep up with their peers and the world around them,” Virginia Migrala, director of children’s services, said. “These laptops will help our kids on a daily basis and prepare them for life after high school and beyond.”

Staff asked children to share why they appreciate receiving a laptop. Responses ranged from help with school work to applying for colleges to no more arguing over who gets to use the cottage computer.

With the right tools, youth at the Masonic Children’s Home will continue to excel at school and reach their fullest potential as they explore the world and their future role within it.

We will give you proof of your donations at the end of the year for tax purposes, and your monthly bank statement or credit card statement will provide you with a record of transfer as additional proof of your donations.
