Hello everyone!

We hope you?ve had a great start to your school year and are excited for our upcoming events!

I would like to remind everyone that CSHP is holding their Host Night on Tuesday, November 19th, 2019 in the Winspear Room at The Faculty Club. Doors open at 5:30 PM and the program begins at 6:30 PM. There will be a cash bar with appetizers provided.

The theme is ?From Novel Concept to Everyday Routine: Stories of Prescribing in Pharmacy Practice?. This event requires a CSHP student membership to attend.

While some of our events do not require a CSHP membership, such as the Banff Seminar, most events that we host throughout the year do require a membership. With your CSHP membership, not only are you able to attend all of our events throughout the year, but you are also eligible for a discounted price on certain CSHP events, such as the annual Banff Seminar! We have a variety of fun and educational events relating to hospital pharmacy practice planned for the upcoming year, we hope to see you all there!

Being a CSHP member as a student comes with many benefits and rewards. Once you become a CSHP member, you will be added to the CSHP Alberta Branch Student Facebook group to stay updated as more information regarding our events is released.

As a CSHP member, you are able to gain valuable experience and knowledge about hospital pharmacy practice in Alberta. You will be matched with a hospital pharmacist working in Alberta, which gives you the opportunity to shadow and ask any questions you might have about hospital pharmacy.

Additionally, being a CSHP member allows you to apply as a volunteer or for employment with AHS, giving you valuable first hand experience.

?One thing I wish that I realized earlier on in the pharmacy program is that specialized/ overly specific therapeutic details don?t work their way into daily practice! T ry to focus on the main points and objectives and take more time to learn about yourself and the world around you. Being an excellent pharmacist takes far more than knowing which CYP enzyme is the fourth most likely to metabolize that third-line drug. Save yourself from over-studying by focusing on main points/ objectives and use the extra time to grow as a person and professional. Volunteer, read, engage in community groups, make new friends, go for a massage; get out of the classroom/ apartment/ house and learn about the world around you!

You will see in due time that being a pharmacist is one of the most personally rewarding careers out there. Yes, therapeutics is fun and interesting, but it?s our ability to listen and engage our patients that makes us the most trusted HCPs out there.?

Being surrounded by amazing individuals that I call my pharmily (2022!

WOOT WOOT!) is what I believe gives me the ?Rx Factor?to be this years winner.

Without them, I wouldn?t be here in this position (literally if they didn?t have nominated me, I would not have been here)! It was an honor to be your 1st Yr Social Rep and because of that I got to know each and every one of you. Y?all bring out the best in me and so I am doing this for all of you. LET?SGET THIS BREAD!

Which faculty member would you want to be a judge at this years event and why?

What auxiliary label best describes your talent at The Rx Factor?

From the moment that we got our white coats, we, as pharmacy students have become an advocate for our profession. This essentially means that we are advocates for health as well. I believe that it is important that we support Movember in order to continue to raise more awareness and start conversations about men?s health, specifically prostate cancer and mental health. As pharmacy students, I believe that it is also our responsibility to make time in our busy schedules to learn about these issues so we can continually grow and gain the knowledge to keep advocating for our patients, our practice, and our health profession.

Dr. Ubaka, he?s a really cool guy and very funny (also just want to see more of him and what he would wear cause he?s my fashion icon).

As pharmacy students, why is it important that we support Movember?

As pharmacy students, our time is precious. How are you using your time to prepare for The Rx Factor?

I have been busy trying to survive midterms like everybody else but I have set an agenda (don?t forget your agenda setting ppl) that once midterms are over, that?s when I start the grind to prepare for this year?s biggest event. I have also set a SMART goal for my performance(s) so stay tuned.

When you found out you were going to be in The Rx Factor, what was your reaction I just sent it.

If your friends had to choose one drug to describe you, what would it be and why?

Cocaine, cause i'm dope.

If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?

I would want to go the beach; in Hawaii or just somewhere in Asia. This past summer I got to go to Siargao Island which is known to be one of the best places to surf. It was the most RELAXING vacation; I learned how to surf and got to chill at the beach. I would want to travel back there or relive the same experience again. It?s either that or the mountains so I can go snowboarding with my buddies.

Hey APSA! Melody and Hanan from 2nd year here! It is our absolute pleasure to present to you this brand new segment to PQ+2 ?Let?s Look Fab in Lab?. Remember stepping into first year orientation and learning that you were expected to ?dress professionally? for labs and seminars? After years of proudly sporting the sweat pants look in undergrad, it was almost rude that they would set such high expectations right off the bat. However, I guess this is the trade-off we deal with for being accepted into a professional program and what-not.

Now we will attempt to insert our 2.5 semesters worth of pharmacy school wisdom: If we learned anything in first year, it would be that Patient Skills is one of THE courses that matter. Skills lab is where we develop our professional identities. Where we learn to assess and treat our patients. For these scenarios ? confidence is key.

Dressing professionally does not always mean suit and tie with heels or die. It also does not mean that we should be taking out an extra grand in student loans for a new wardrobe (especially with the new provincial budget cuts and all ? haha). Through this segment we hope to expose you to some professional wear tips and tricks. Ideas that will work for all the different types of budgets, and different levels of comfort!

We are absolutely pumped to start working on our piece for the next issue! It would mean so much to us if you could tell us what you would like to see from our segment. Less of Melody?s bad jokes?

My Student Exchange Learning and practicing pharmacy is a difficult task and even so, it is a passion of mine which I wanted to explore further. I decided to pursue the Student Exchange Programme (SEP) this past summer where I was fortunate to complete a one month internship in Famagusta, Cyprus.

e Experience in Cyprus The possibility of travelling and exploring a new country while also learning about pharmacy was an exciting thought. I was looking forward to this trip as soon as I completed clicked ?submit?on my SEP application form. As the date of my departure loomed closer, my feelings of excitement changed to nervousness. This was the first time I was travelling alone to a country that was quite far. Additionally, I had only completed one community and hospital rotation before starting this internship and I did not know what the job entailed. Regardless of my hesitation, I boarded my first flight to Cyprus.

I arrived in Cyprus after 3 flights and 2 days of exhausting travel. I felt a mixture of both excitement and nervousness about spending the next 26 days on this foreign but incredible island. I stepped outside into the very hot and humid air. I found my luggage and met 3 SEP Local Exchange Officers (LEOs) holding my name on a sign. I felt immediately at ease knowing that I would be welcome here. We waited for another SEP student who was flying in from France so we could all proceed to the Eastern Mediterranean University dorms, which would be our new home for the next month.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by the other SEP students that had already landed.

We immediately began sharing stories of our journeys to Cyprus, our reasons for applying to SEP, and what we hoped to gain from this trip. It is incredible that the only reason I met these remarkable individuals was because we all shared the same passion for pharmacy. We would later realize that these friendships would last a lifetime.

Each morning I would take the city bus to my community pharmacy. I assumed that my role in the pharmacy would be similar to my community rotation, but I was mistaken. Pharmacy is a diverse profession and each country has different practices. In the Cypriot pharmacy system? there are no patient files, no counting of medications, no direct billing to insurance companies, and a lack of pharmacy labels. This requires pharmacists to be vigilant when talking to patients to ensure they are providing the best medications for their conditions and checking for drug interactions. Additionally, pharmacists highly value self care; they have coffee machines in each pharmacy and they also close the pharmacy from 1:00 pm-3:00 pm for lunch!

Learning about the difference in pharmacy practice was enlightening but I was also very fortunate to choose a SEP location that accepted 24 other students to complete their internships. This allowed me to meet so many new pharmacy students and build a close friendship to each one of them. We would explore the island together every afternoon and evening. We went to the beach, on walking tours of the city, on boat trips, and to many new restaurants so we could submerge ourselves within the Turkish culture. None of us had been to Cyprus previously, but it is safe to assume that we fell in love with this country almost immediately.

Each day was photographed profusely so we could live through these memories when we returned to our home countries. The friendships built in Cyprus have still lasted the great distance between all of us as we continue to talk in our group chats and update each other about our lives. I am grateful to be part of International Pharmaceutical Students?Federation (IPSF) who brought forth the SEP program. I was able to explore outside my comfort zone and learn more about my profession and myself within a short period of time. I am thankful to the country of Cyprus for letting me in with open arms and I hope to return in the near future so I can once again be reunited with the amazing culture and people of this island.
