Older Adult Needs and Preferences for Autonomous Vehicle Interiors: A Focus Group Study

PAGE | 02

Do you have an interest in autonomous vehicles (AVs)? Are you over 65? Would you like to help Purdue give input to the design of a future AV model/car?

The Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) is looking for people 65 years or older that have an interest in helping shape how the interiors of autonomous vehicles might be designed to best suit older adults’ needs and preferences. Who is conducting the study? “Older Adult Needs and Preferences for Autonomous Vehicle Interiors: A Focus Group Study” is being led by Dr. Konstantina Gkritza (Civil Engineering) and Dr. Stacey L. Connaughton (PPRI Director) with project research team member Dr. L. Allison Roberts (PPRI Bement Senior Policy Fellow), and the student research team. What is the Purpose of this study? This focus group is being conducted in collaboration with a vehicle manufacturer to collect data on older adults’ needs and preferences with regards to future autonomous vehicle interiors in an effort to increase comfort, safety, and convenience of older occupants. The focus group’s goals are to include older adults in the design process by evaluating how they interact with a proposed design and assess their opinions towards it, other desired features, as well as how best to design an interior meant for shared use.

What will I do if I choose to be a part of this study? If you choose to be in this study, you will: Complete a short pre-screening via telephone. Complete a pre-focus group questionnaire. Participate in a focus group discussion (~90 minutes) that will consist of an interaction period with the proposed vehicle interior design model followed by a round table discussion, which is led by a moderator. The discussion will consist of topics such as: What features might make getting into/out of the vehicle easier? What adjustability/reconfigurability is desired? What additional features would make the ride more comfortable/pleasant? What are other things I should know if I would like to participate? There is no cost to participate. You will be given a $20.00 gift card upon completion of the focus group discussion. You can withdraw at any time. How do I contact someone to participate? Please contact us at ppri@purdue.edu if you have questions or are interested in participating! If you have questions about your rights while taking part in the study or have concerns about the treatment of research participants, please call the Human Research Protection Program at (765) 494-5942, email (irb@purdue.edu), or write to: Human Research Protection Program Purdue University Ernest C.
